Guild Wars 2

Just a quick update to say I fixed my particular problem – it was an overheating issue. I’d turned my fans down a few weeks back and completely forgotten to turn them back up! With decent cooling I’ve not had a single program crash, freeze or BSOD.

I played a reasonable amount of the first Guild Wars and never joined a guild. I’ve had GW2 for a good six months and still haven’t joined a guild. I feel like I’m probably missing the point, so I thought I’d give it a go!

I’m currently on Whiteside Ridge but more than happy to move to another EU server. I’ve never done PvP or WvW but would be interested in a casual look at it. I currently have two characters in their 50s (Ele/Gua) but very little genuine game knowledge, so I need a guild that can give the basics to noobie me.

In terms of what you’d be getting from me; I’m British and in my 30s. I’ve been playing MMOs for 15+ years, starting with Asheron’s Call. I like to think I’m a fairly hardcore gamer, but my wife and small kids make that difficult to demonstrate. I have a fairly dark, bad taste sense of humour so I’m no use in guilds for younger or more sensitive players. Frankly I’m just after some banter, advice and the odd group event.

Full re-installed seemed to offer some brief improvement, in that I survived all the way through an Ulgoth raid. However I did lose all sound as the local population picked up and when I immediately went over to Metrica to do the Fire Elemental, my machine just restarted. No more errors, just an automatic shutdown.

Gotta love MMO forums! “I do not experience your problem therefore it could not possibly exist in this game that I love; you must delete your post immediately, heathen!”

I’m having very similar issues. Either:

1) the game will randomly drop back to desktop with the 60 second countdown to an automatic error report,
2) It’ll freeze up and need a ctrl-alt-del to close it out,
3) It’ll BSOD.

All point to memory issues and I have no equivalent problems in other games. Specs, broadly, are Win 7, i7, 8GB RAM, GTX660 Ti. Nothing spectacular but more than enough for GW2. Problems tend to occur more in busy areas; Lion’s Arch, Divinity’s Reach or chasing daily quests.

I’ll try brian’s fix above and report back, but I have reinstalled GW2 once already since this started and it’s still happening.

I get it just trying to create a new character, so difficult to compare in-game regions, but the one character I do have is in Wayfarer Footlands and does get d/c’d fairly regularly with the same error.

Bought the game yesterday and spent nearly 12 hours trying to get installed and online after various issues linking new accounts to old GW1 accounts, accessing the installer client and being told I hadn’t bought the game… Finally got in after being ignored by tech support (there still has been no response to my ticket) and trying my own work-arounds. I created a character and played for a couple of hours fine.

This morning I try rolling a couple more characters, but get the reported error every time I complete the final character creation step – nothing saved, no toon created. I can log in with my original character fine, but then get booted every 15 minutes or so.

I’ll submit a ticket as per instructions, but given no-one responded to my last one I don’t hold out hope and the fact they’re referring people to their ISPs suggests they aren’t really bothered.

Doesn’t seem like I’m destined to ever play this game, does it?
