This is pretty disturbing. This long and still not a word.
Shame on you, ANet
Optional Subsriptions / Premium Accounts are kind of worse than a Subscription-only model.
Therefore I would not be very supportive of your idea.
If that’s the case then NCsoft new Wildstar is already doomed. The idea’s are almost the same.
You say it will split the community, how? The model I suggested is not tide to content, special classes, cool finishers… unlike other MMO’s. Its tide to commonly used items IE. Transmutation Crystals, Hair Cuts.
The problem its not afford… Its justify.
Player A
Likes to seek out cool new outfits (a major part of this game) but only plays 2-3 times a week for about 2-3 hours each time. They don’t play enough to acquire much gold or Crystals. They have to justify each time they wish to see their character in a new outfit or with a new hair cut. The amount of time they spend in game doesn’t justify the cost. The door is closed to them because of common sense.
Player B
This player is just like Player A, they like changing their character but they are very active. They can trade Gold of Gems, buy Crystals and other Gem store item without having to dip into their wallet. A premium account would help them if they constantly changed their look but they can make that choice and it has little to no impact.
Player A does not have that choice. They are the target for this model. Player A can’t justify spending 15$ to change their look so they don’t. But if player A could spend 15$ a month and have access to a Transmutation UI and Hair UI that allowed this at no cost… well that’s a different story. You add in a convenience factor.
Player A can be more casual but still have the same desires. They may even stop playing for weeks at a time. Guess what still comes in… the 15$ a month. Why? Because Player A knows that when ever they want to log in, they have that convenience to do what ever they want.

What is wrong with you OP? What is wrong with you paying $15 a month on the gemstore without Anet telling you?
You really want to feel obligated don’t you? Obligate yourself to spend $20 on gems every month and you will be fine.
BuGsy. Guild Wars 2 is Buy to Play. That means $ to buy the game and play forever.
Guild Wars 1 survived without a sub fee because of expansions so why cant GW2 survive through a cosmetic cash shop? There are still F2P MMOs out there that still have their servers running(perfect world????). Who cares about success(it is not like you are making money off of the game)? If you are playing the game you obviously like it.
So stop it with the glorification of a Sub Fee…. it is a complete scam and unnecessary to keep a game running. A fictional scenario: game’s budget is $125 million selling the copy for $60 a pop. game sells 3 million copies. I’m pretty sure it just made budget and with its cash shop will continue to survive since it is a good game.
Assuming GW2 is a good game……., it should have no problem surviving.
I have edited my OP to emphasis and added a TLDR for those who are obviously incapable of reading a post before replying.
The above post applies to you as well.
If that would happen, that would mean no more GW2 for me – and I don’t think I’m alone saying that!
Why…
Why do people think a “Premium” account which offers certain vanity options like; Transmutation Crystals, Hair Cuts and other non pay to win items Free for a monthly fee will mean the death of the game or their interest in said game?
It’s not a subscription fee for service, it does not change the way you play the game or how you spend your money in the gem store. It just offers another level of payment which gives “Active” users commonly used items.
To reiterate for those who obviously DIDN’T read the post.
This is NOT a post to CHANGE the game to a SUBSCRIPTION model. It is a post to ADD another level of payment for frequently used gem store items that DO NOT impact your game or individual progression.
If the bean counters at Anet thought it would make the company more money they would have done it already. They are a business after all and the purpose of a business is to make money by providing product/service.
I don’t know why everyone keeps saying Anet… Do you guys not pay attention to gaming sites or company news. Anet does not get the money from the Gem Store.
Say you have a really smart fish(Anet) and he can talk. You bring him to shows and he talks and makes you a crap load of money. While, you(NCSoft) make all the dough and every once in a while sprinkle some fish food into the bowl so your money keeps flowing.
But back to the subject. The Sub model, no matter how much you dislike, has been a solid staple to PC Gaming and MMOs. Store/Sub works. F2P… well that’s just a beast designed to bleed out its customers for the first year and then die off. There is not ONE successful MMORPG out there that’s is F2P. Sure they have success but its only long enough to line the handlers pockets before its funding is pulled and they move on.
So how do you measure success. Better yet, how do you measure unsuccessful games.
Copies Sold, average connections, years since release
3.5 Million Copies sold and most ever logged in the last year… 460+k thats not an average the this game at its peak. This game is beautiful, fun and engaging but when you feel like your being taken the cleaners for stupid kitten like Transmutation Crystals… it destroys what ever immersion you had left.
When your game turns into a Niche game, it slowing cannibalizes its self.
Just an FYI there is a reason why NCSoft is going subscription based/credd for Wild Star…
IMO the lack of the Holy Trinity is why… the most online this year was 460k… out of the 3.5+million copies that sold. Out of that many players who go interested in this game… that’s the climax. I measly 460k… and btw that is the MOST online in the last year. Not an average… This game had potential… it still does. Lets face it… Gem Store goes to NCSoft and they decide how much to give to ANet for more development but that’s another dilemma.
Oh well, my bad for not reading carefully. Still against it.
No worries and ya It was an optional method. Perhaps ANet would even be able to get the sub money for development instead of NCSoft gobbling up every dollar from the Gem Store.
Since 9/10 of you DON’T read posts completely TL:DR “cause it must be to long” We are not talking about changing to a sub model, the post is about adding another level of payment through the means of a subscription
I know I am going to get flamed so bad I may burst up IRL.
I would really like a subscription model """OPTION"""" for Guild Wars 2
Not for service but to cover Gem Store items and id pay the golden 14/month for a quality of life change.
Transmutation UI which cost gold
Hair Cut UI which cost gold
Unlimited Harvesting Tool
Access to a Banker Golem
Discount on Gem Store items
etc…
Stuff like that, of course it should only be for those who agree to a 6month contract.
There is no reason why the game “CAN’T HAVE BOTH” provided it’s done right.
(edited by BuGsY.7281)
1. More active skills/rotations which allows skilled players to excel
2. Anti Zerg
3. Holy Trinity roles as optimal but not mandatory
As I stated, as an active player I will be in a situation where I won’t be able to login for an extended period of time. If I come back and my names are gone Anet will have lost an active player and a paying customer that buys gems on a regular basis.
You just made my point.
Again, you catering to players that do not keep this game going. Why should they have that privileged. They bought the game, not the character names. Do they keep this game alive? No, they do not! Active players, the ones in your guild, the ones you party with and yourself keep this community active.
For anyone reading this, you keep this game active. To the millions of people, yes millions, who bought this game and haven’t been on in over a year… They do not. Regardless of their personal problems or obligations.
Will it suck when they come back to a forced name change. Maybe or maybe a better name will be open.
You need to stop worrying about those who haven’t been on in over 6 months. Chances are, they aren’t coming back. Worry about new players!
One other thing, this method is not new to MMOs. Name expiration hell even character expiration has been a part of MMOs since Diablo 1.
Since you brought up GW1, even it had a method to free up names but most where unaware of it.
I would suggest a support ticket method but that would only help veteran players who know their way around the game.
Stand up for the absent players, ill stand up for the new players.
You know… the ones who will contribute to the community.
Don’t use post-processing. I don’t, the choice is there for a reason. :P
There is a choice… I had no clue.
I understand what you are saying about names taken up by players that will never come back. However, there is no real fair way to free up those names without penalizing people that cannot play, or even login, for an extended period of time due to no fault of their own.
Is it fair for a new player to join the game, one who is interested in the Lore, prefers following racial naming rules, and wishes to get into the game? Is it fair to have every single name taken by some launch day fan boy who tested the game and never came back?
Instead of catering to possible chance someone may come back, cater to the ones populating the worlds and giving you someone to play with. This isn’t about right or wrong or fairness(contradiction of above post) its about addressing a growing issue that is only getting worse.
Read up on Sylvari naming resources and spend hours checking each name
’ The Sylvari seem to have one name, Killeen is most likely related to the Irish name Cillian meaning Shadow. Faolain pronounced as “Fee lahn” means “little wolf” from the Irish word Faol meaning wolf. The Irish name Felan is a derivative of this.[ShadowedSin]

"
You will find 90% of the first names taken. Almost every name in that language tree has been created. Even the ones you would think, “no way in hell does someone have that name” I have personally spent hours going through the lists from multiple sites.
This is a growing issue and its only getting worse.
People that don’t want to play for some time but want to hold their character names will just login every few months to keep their names. This would not necessarily result in an increased player base.
Yes it would, it would sort out those who have an interest in the game from those who bought the game during launch and decided it wasn’t “their cup of tea”
There are many people that for various reasons may get called away from games for extended periods of times. I’m one of them. I’d rather not come back to see all my names gone. I can see names freed up for accounts that have been permanently terminated for violating ToS though.
That is one idea and a good one. With 3.5m copies sold, highest connected at one time is 460,000 which still leaves a lot of inactive accounts.
Just say for a moment, ANet released information that over 1 million accounts with 3 million characters have not been logged in since 1 month after launch. Which based on the last Info release from ANet is very possible.
Now I do see what players are getting at, I just don’t agree.
I do see the benefit of having name expiry date, even if its 6 months. Log in once ever 6 months. It might even bring old players back to the game and increase the player base. Seeing the character selection screen is all it takes.
The whole point of a non-sub game (or B2P) is that you can drop in and out of it at any time, be it days, months or even years.
To the OP, you do not have a right to claim a name that someone else has already taken for their character just because you’re late to the party. This is a nonsensical idea, frankly.
If its so “nonsensical” then why is it… almost every other MMO and Dungeon crawler has a mechanic in place for this issue, be it expatriation dates or a request form.
Regardless of what time someone arrives, I arrived Day 1 so I’m not “late to the party,” Anet still only makes money off of those who are active. Remaining active, like other games, ensures your character names. Not to mention the names are NOT owned by the player.
Creating single names in this game is a super pain in the butt. For RP, Sylvari – Asura, only take single names, rarely a title for Asura and each is limited to certain languages or style.
I don’t know if its one name locked across all Worlds or just to your Home world. I have never left mine so I wouldn’t know.
The hardest part of making a new character should not be the name. That appears to be the case.
So my suggestion.
If a name is locked to all Worlds, change it to individual World lockouts and force name changes to those who transfer and find someway to differentiate those who “Guest” and Name* works in other games.
If that is impossible then add an expiration date (120 days) from last logged in to where the characters name is freed and a forced name change is applied if that name is taken when they come back.
Lets face it, this game is not an active sub game so there has to be 100,000 dead accounts that may or may not be logged into… ever! I know its a bit much but its getting ridiculous.
Jumping through hoops to find a name is not fun. Even when you “settle” with a name, your never happy and it does take away from your enjoyment every time someone says it.
This might also deter some awful names like “Slap Worthy”, “I C U DIE” or “L O L Monster”
I know plenty of players who just gave up and mashed their keyboard and said “That about as good as I can get”

Same problem here and its only after I speak with a new scout. After he gives out the new area all game sound except UI and Music cuts out. Not combat/ambiance sound whats so ever. The issues persist until I log out to character select and back in, change map area or zone in somewhere else.
Extremely frustrating.
I keep getting the, “Sorry! Your order did not match any current listings. Please refresh and try again.”
Same for all my guildies.
same here on Blackgate
We’ve been asking for these three classes to be repaired for 5 months or so now, im not holding my breath, either roll a warrior or be gimped isn’t really valid balance..
Maybe if we could spend gems on a “fix my class” fund it would get done. Like I have said over and over. Expect crucial things like class balance(both pve and pvp), bug fixes, and new content to take a back burner with this business model. Unless its through the gem store… don’t get your hopes up.
I will buy more things from the gem store when they focus on everything but the gem store… like class balance/content/pvp balance/bug fixes.
That is my wish list.
I am from the Tarnish Coast server, the un-offical GW2 RP server, and I love it.
RP, short for Role Play, is when players assume or represent the the current game-world is real, and participates in assuming a personalty and a personal story. There are some who lash out on role players in GW2 for no other reason than just to be a huge misery to others.
I would argue the roleplayers make the GW2 servers feel alive, it certainly make the cities seem busy when player walk through them and making small talk.
When you look at the alternative of a normal non-rp server, you find that it’s dead. No one talks, and mapchat is reduce to “looking for groups”, trolls, and dead silence.Roleplayers actually appreciate the story and world of the game, and should have some respect for making everything interesting.
What do you think?
Its kinda sad there is no official RP server. I have always went to the RP servers not because I RP but because I have always had an interest in the Lore and the way RP’rs living up a community. I was disappointed to see RP was not encouraged or was given a home among the GW2 servers.
It was been a few weeks since I began my journey through the game and I am not impressed. There is no… thickness to the story or the game… Being an old GW player, I was excited to see a GW2…
I really dislike that the Gem store getting priority development. Guess content/class balance/pvp balance/bug fixes will always get the back burner with a business model like this. Now I see why sub based MMOs have good (lore)story lines. You pay for class balance/lore(content)/bug fixes not for dyes or gold.
