I have the same problem. I’m using clientport 443 currently. Have also tried 80. I also tried grouping to see if that would help. It didn’t. Two others in my group were having the same problem.

The NDA is still in effect. It has only been lifted for some invited media people. You’re still breaking NDA if you say you are in the beta or talk about it.

Would you buy an expansion?

In a word, no. GW2 was my first MMO and it will most likely be my last. I simply do not like monetized content centering around a cash shop full of lottery items. The entire experience is rather cheap and immersion-breaking. If this is the direction of all future MMOs, then I’ll stick to single player RPGs like Skyrim where the story is gripping, the loot is incredible and the character progression actually makes you feel epic.

While I agree with your sentiments, don’t give up on MMOs just yet. There are some decent ones on the way. It would be a shame to miss out on some fun games because of a bad first experience.

To answer the OP, it would depend on when the expansion were to be released and if there were anything more interesting in endgame. If it were to come out tomorrow and follow a similar model as the current one, then nope. I wouldn’t buy it. Other than WvWvW, there really isn’t anything in GW2 for me.

But I have Rift to play right now, and Wildstar this winter (hopefully). Think I’ll be good for awhile.

@Snow White, I agree with your concerns. It’s amazing to me that people in this thread criticize you for not wanting to be upset and intimidated while you play. I had a problem with a stalker in a previous MMO so I do sympathize. The lack of privacy options in this game is crazy.

Hopefully there will be a response. But I should warn you that this was all brought up in beta and discussed at length. Nothing was done.

Cost of waypoints [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Calsie.2501

No one has ever declined to do an activity with me because it would cost money to waypoint to where I am.

Furthermore, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with suggesting ways to defray the cost of travel. When all you have to do is kill a few monsters or mine a few nodes in order to recover the cost, that’s a very small price to pay considering how much time you saved by quick traveling.

Sure, it may cost 4 silver to waypoint to a dungeon on the other side of the world. But you get 26 silver for completing the dungeon, and that’s before you include drops.

No one is debating that you can recoup the costs. Of course you can. The point is that you shouldn’t have barriers placed in your way of moving around the map and socializing. And who said anything about dungeons? Most of the time when I want to go somewhere, it’s for something silly like to meet up and admire something a friend wants to show off. Personally, I find it kind of boring having to go farm things to cover costs.

If the costs to travel were as they were initially proposed (“small”), then there wouldn’t be so many people debating this. In fact, I can’t think of another game where this topic is such an issue. Kind of makes me think there’s a problem for at least a segment of the population.

I don’t understand why people feel the need to come in here and tell the OP that he needs to play their way in order to cope with travel costs. He’s somehow “doing it wrong”. People seem to enjoy telling him he’s wasteful, or a bad player because he doesn’t enjoy being taxed harshly for travel.

There’s advice here, to port to the Mists to save the silver. But how many loading screens is that, or how is he supposed to get from LA to the place he wants to be without spending more? … and then there’s the return trip.

Or they say Run, and enjoy the scenery! Great, if that’s what you want to do and have time for it. But what if you don’t?

Travel costs are high enough that many people just don’t move from the spot they’re in — which in my opinion is the exact opposite of what you want to encourage players to do.

There are other things about the game that people complain about. I can overlook them all, except this one issue. It seems like a means of keeping people poor in order to encourage us to buy gems. And once I realized that, my love for the game diminished greatly.

I wonder if the people in this thread who support the travel tax so strongly, do the same for the real world taxes they must pay.

I think we’ve learned that we can’t count on GW2 being anything like GW1. Hopefully, there’s a way to include those who have real life obligations on Sunday.

CPU upgrade - make much difference for FPS?

I feel sorry for the OP. So many bunny trails in this thread that help not at all.

This sticky from MMO-Champion is a good starting point in seeing system configurations at different price points.

Once you start putting modern components into an out-of-date pc, you can suddenly find you don’t have a good enough power supply, or your case is too tight, or the cooling is inadequate. To say nothing of the compatibility issues.

I suggest that before you spend a penny, you make a plan and run it by some trusted computer nerds, either online or IRL. It would suck to put in a new video card and find that your pc shuts down every time you go into wvw.

As for the CPU question, yes it can make a big difference. But only if that is where your bottleneck is. This is a good tool that helps identify bottlenecks:

I can't make any money in this game due to mechanics...

There are money sinks every where in the game. Repair bills, way point costs, the cost of experimenting on the mystic forge, upgrading keeps and guards, buying siege equipment. I think I lost over 2 gold this week playing WvW alone due to repair and upgrades…

People who are saying “It’s fine. I have lots of gold.” probably aren’t doing most of the things you mention. Sure, it’s possible to get by just fine if you play conservatively and are frugal.

Where’s the fun in that?

I agree with you OP.

Suggestion: WAYPOINT FEES!

Anyway, maybe instead offer a cash shop item that allows for free waypoints for a set period of time? Call it a Waypoint Pass and have it cost x amount of Gems and allow the character to teleport for free for x amount of time. Maybe offer it in different time periods? 24 hours, 3 days, week, month? Each costing more?

I really really dislike being nickle and dimed so I’d probably go for the monthly option.

Kind of like a subscription fee …

I have yet to find a problem with waypoint costs as long as I remain in the level zones that I’m expected to be in though.

Unfortunately, the game wasn’t designed with that in mind. We are expected to use the whole map as our endgame.

…Also events give just under 2 silver and when I port across the map to get to an event before it ends I make hardly any money because it cost me everything I just earned to teleport there.

This is exactly why the travel costs need to drop. As it is currently, when I hear an event has started, I check the map and the cost to get there. Most of the time I just have to pass on the event because the cost isn’t worth it. Maybe this problem gets better at 80. But at 57 I’m barely above the poverty line because I have to save for upcoming expenses.

Pricey travel limits gameplay. Wonder who thought it was a good idea to design the game in such a way that the best option is NOT to play it all.

Signed. I wanted to quickly show my Dad the starter zone on the weekend, but I had to do the Mists/Lion’s Arch/Portal Hub/City We Wanted/Waypoint at the Entrance loading screen extravaganza first. By the time we’d navigated all those loading screens, he’d lost interest.

I don’t think that looking at the server list tells you much about the actual pop. ArenaNet can change the capacity when they choose. Just because most of them were full and high, doesn’t really mean it’s the same “full and high” that it was a week ago.

Travel in GW2 way too high for high level players?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

… you shouldn’t really die, because you have all your traits and gear lined up.

This is only true if you are a “play it safe” player. I like to do silly things like solo a group event. This morning I took on the giant worm event in Blazeridge Steps. After I died the second time, I starting thinking I shouldn’t keep going because it was going to be expensive.

That’s not good imo.

PS: I did beat the event

Travel in GW2 way too high for high level players?

Calsie.2501

This thread makes me sad. I don’t enjoy the economic side of MMO’s. I want to have fun. Worrying about money is for real life.

Currently at level 56, I’m watching every penny and hoping things improve at 80. If I have to turn my gameplay focus towards how I can earn gold, I can’t see how I’ll enjoy playing long-term. I won’t buy gold. It feels like cheating.

Other MMO’s have gold-sinks but I’ve never felt as poor and limited as I do in this game.

Waypoint costs have to go.

Calsie.2501

Agree 100%. Waypoints are too expensive. They don’t need to be free, but they shouldn’t discourage us from moving around the game world. Needlessly irritating travel was the final straw for me in SWToR and I’m feeling that same grumpiness when I want to go somewhere in GW2.

Put the gold sink somewhere else please. We need to be out in the world.
