SMAA was added in this build, but sadly it’s not listed in the game’s antialiasing options at all ;_;

Ambient occlusion and light adaptation work fine though

SMAA finally gets added, and it turns out it’s not in this build due to a bug, not listed under the antialiasing menu ;_;

Love the new light adaptation and ambient occlusion implementations though

What do you need to do to enable light adaptation? It is grayed out for me.

I just logged in after the update and ticked it, make sure all the usual suspects are ruled out though, latest graphics drivers, verify your GW2 install etc.

Usually it grays out when your GPU doesn’t support it.

That too, what’s your GPU?

Adding my feedback to this one too, same issue, windows 7 64-bit, corsair vengeance 1500 USB headset with the latest 2.0.26 drivers, only shows “Default Device” in the sound output list. Luckily the headset is my only output device so it works flawlessly (My other outputs are all disabled in device manager since I don’t use them) Just I can’t select the headset directly in the options now, just shows default only.

One question remains: will we see more of…

ERROR ATTEMPTING TO SELL

It’s not necessarily an actual error, but it does need rewording, that error is actually an internal buffer for trading so the TP doesn’t get clogged in a short period of time. You’ll notice it after filing a few trades, then if you wait 60 or so seconds it’ll reset, and re-appear after you do some more trades in quick succession again.

I don’t think this buffer will be removed, but that error notification needs rewording to something like “Trade quota reached, please wait X seconds for the quota to reset”

And taking a look at the screenshoot. The price before tax appears 3 times. It’s redundant. Having the final price in the center makes more sense

The pricing shown is fine I believe, top one shows the per unit price which is useful, the largest middle one shows the overall price for that sale, which only looks the same because that particular sale is just one item, and the bottom left shows the current sales in per unit, which again is fine as for real world sales it’ll show the per unit price in multitudes of sales.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately to say though this seems like a rather odd change considering this entire pack is more about QoL improvements. The projected profit on the seller’s end is vital to see as it’s pre calculated and you can instantly see it.

But now we have to open our calculators for every single sale and deduct all taxes every single time. This is against the very point of QoL improvements and just adds needless arbitrary actions that waste time for no real reason just because one element is now removed from the UI.

As shown on the provided screenshot https://dviw3bl0enbyw.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/166054/c47a6trading-post-selling_1.jpg

There is plenty of room to still include the projected UI element while still showing the overall selling price and tax deductions.

It seems more counter-productive than actually being productive, but apart from that, I love the other changes, so well done on those ones though ^^

Thanks for the clarifications Curtis, would it be possible to clarify the missing “Projected profit” UI element, it seems to be missing for no real reason other than to now arbitrarily calculate yourself how much money you make per sale instead of being able to see it directly on the screen.

[Suggestion] Merchant/Forge UI Improvements.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Collective.9206

Collective.9206

Tried the search feature, sadly it’s still an information black hole that doesn’t work too well. Anywho.

While we’re nearing the next feature packs, and generally feature packs are more to do with convenience and ease of use upgrades, I’d like to suggest 2 new additions to come about for the next pack, since it’s a bit too soon for any changes to it now, what with QA testing, bugs everywhere and such.

Sure this has been suggested numerous times but couldn’t find a thread about it to bump, probably in the old suggestions sections but of course it’s now a graveyard for archival.

~~~#1.~~~
Can we please have a numeric input box on each vendor’s UI screen so we can choose exactly how many of an item we want to purchase, certain items that you need to purchase to turn skillpoints and karma into gold nigh on give you carpal tunnel because you need to powerclick the buy button into oblivion.
If this is implemented there will be less cases of carpal tunnel worldwide and world peace may ensue by not experiencing wrist pain. All it needs is a simple text input box next to the buy button at the bottom once an item is highlighted and allow you to enter between 1-250 (since 250 is the stack maximum)
Now, don’t get me wrong, something as simple as this is a bigger task to implement that it seems, you don’t just create the addition then suddenly all vendors have it, it would be a big task to have every single vendor given this addition, but overall I think it would definitely benefit the game greatly and lessen the tedium of grinding away to convert the skillpoints and karma to gold.
~~~~~~

~~~#2~~~
My last suggestion for now we be the implementation of the crafting input to the mystic forge. For instance, and this goes back to point #1, needing to forge together materials in order to earn gold is also sadly as tedious, if not more so due to needing to click all 4 individual materials, then forge, then back to clicking all 4 again.
I propose an input similar to the craft system, whereby there is the numeric input option if you wish to craft a particular amount, or just hit craft all to use up all your materials. Same thing I’m asking for the forge, as long as all 4 materials are the same constantly, you should be able to set an amount to forge and let the system finish them off.
Of course this would not apply to forging that involves different materials each time, like throwing different rares/exotics into the forge. I’m talking about pure factory line forging of the same 4 base materials over and over.
Now, one thing this 2nd suggestion might do if implemented the same way as crafting, ie: the craft speeds up after every craft, is mess with the economy due to the speed at which materials and items would be generated by the forge, so I propose automating the automatic forging to be the same current speed of a player manually clicking all 4 then hitting the forge button, so the system does 1 forge every 3 or so seconds so the pace is the same, but you won’t get your hand destroyed from endless clicking, as the system itself is automating it to your specified amount.
~~~~~~

That concludes my 2 small suggestions, they may be only minute changes but I feel these 2 alone would lessen the tedium of needing to buy hundreds, sometimes thousands of materials from a vendor to be able to craft or forge them whilst still keeping the natural flow of the forge with forging being automated to one forge every 3 seconds instead of the rapid succession that crafting has.

Thanks for reading. I went into a bit more detail per suggestion to explain why these changes will be very beneficial, as well as explaining how they can be implemented and safeguarding any economic changes caused by an automated forge.

Since the last update on the 13th August. Gw2’s own servers (or data center routing) have been in catastrophic meltdown with major disconnects for many players and heavy stuttering and pausing whilst in-game. I have tried several methods such as changing my dns, resetting my router etc, but to no avail.

I have tested my own internet several times over and it has not had any issues at all. Unfortunately this seems to be on Anet’s end and it’s been getting pretty bad today especially. Sat in MOunt Maelstrom waiting for the Golem. Constant disconnects and pausing.

P.S: Just to add, I’m in the European region and Desolation is my main server. This issue -seems- to be related to the EU side only, at least from people I’ve asked.

You only need to do a bit more browsing on the forums to notice they are aware of it, and have asked people to post there crash logs.

I was reading through many of the posts about what people where saying and a lot of them said that a specific class was doing it more often than others.

I created a new character a Norn /Necromancer and I have not crashed yet although Im sure i did get the game freeze on me but no crash.
My other character is a Charr / Warrior who crashes at least one time every 15 mins.
It also seems to crash more during events / boss.

That thread below this one is unrelated to the server jitter itself, and more of a client crash to do with character animations, usually verifying the game helps to fix that.

I’m talking more about the server judder and imploding right now.

It looks like there is something going on in Europe right now but it may not be as wide spread is you think. When posting internet issue it’s always best to post your ISP and region like city and country, so if it’s a regional thing that let’s Anet and others know. This is only the second thread on this and the post count is very low so it looks to me to be a regional internet problem, if it were a server side issue the post count would be higher.

I would say it’s more of a minority posting about it, but the issue is a bit larger in-game when you see say/map chat whenever the stuttering and pausing occurs.

But I agree that it seems to be a regional issue, not everyone is affected by it, but it is larger than just a tiny subset of players. At least from what I have witnessed.

The issue sadly also applies to every aspect of the game, and I mean EVERY aspect, but the severity varies between maps of course. So it could be a traffic routing issue or the closest data center is having trouble routing to certain ISPs.

I’ve tried the usual few solutions, like changing to Google’s DNS and restarting the router, but to no avail.

Audio instability leading to client crash

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Collective.9206

Collective.9206

Title is in reference to the notorious bug listed here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Annoying-Sound-Bug/first

Where the sound would die and you’d get this eerie whirring noise notifying you that your client is about to crash.

Now this bug is similar, but minus the whirring noise. What happens is, any sound quality above fastest can cause the sound to cut out, with only the background music playing, this is usually a cue to say your game will either crash outright, or crash but allow you to keep playing, as long as you do not click the error message. Once the message is clicked, the game closes.

This happens almost in the same way the old bug does, it is only noticable in large group fights like WvW or world boss events.

The bug also scales in severity the more you move up the sound quality slider, fastest, ie, lowest quality is the most stable. The audio crashes begin to start once you move one notch to the right, growing in severity until you reach highest quality, which is when the bug hits it’s peak and crashing is sometimes guaranteed depending on what you’re doing.

I am using a corsair vengeance 1500 headset with the latest drivers, set to 5.1 surround with dolby pro logic IIx enabled. I will note guild wars 2 is the ONLY game that crashes due to the audio, no other game on my system will ever crash due to audio bugs, so I am fairly certain the headset is not to blame as gw2 is notorious for having this audio bug since the beta.

Just as an extra bit of info, this issue seems to have grown in severity since the living world season 2 updates. During season 1 I was able to sit about half way on the sound quality setting without crashing, however, since season 2 it’s almost guaranteed to crash anywhere above lowest quality.

[Suggestion] Please add SMAA to GW2

Collective.9206

@Dusty, Anet could try what Saint’s row did and support both DX9 and DX11’s codepaths, admittedly though it could potentially lengthen workloads in the future due to needing to maintain both versions on windows.

@rgraze, CPU bound purely means that a game utilises the CPU more than the GPU. GPUs by design can process data and run much faster than a CPU can by a very large margin. Having a game using the CPU more than the GPU can limit performance and also bottleneck your computer when it comes to very intensive tasks. For instance when you turn the culling options to show the highest player amount and highest quality, your framerate tanks.

@Spiuk Exactly, which is why I’d love an in-game option for SMAA, it’s easily supported by DX9, only a slightly larger fps hit than FXAA due to it being more efficient at antialiasing and as you say, an in-game option won’t force itself onto the entire rendered screen such as forcing FXAA/SMAA via driver/third party tools does.

We don’t even do Dx10 or Dx11, so what are the odds they will do a manufacturer’s exclusive API?

SMAA is not exclusive to either of the GPU manufactures, it is universal and can be used on either brand, the same as FXAA being created by nvidia but it can just as easily be used by AMD.

It’s a shame this game was inevitably made on DX9, DX11 would be able to push for far greater performance, as well as using the CPU/GPU to more benefit rather than being limited to one or 2 cores of the CPU with DX9.

You can use SMAA with SweetFX. Also you can use downscale from nvidia driver custom resolution. :/

The problem with forced methods is it tends to be a blockade when you use overlay applications like steam/fraps/shadowplay/overwolf etc, they simply cease to function in-game. Having it built natively into the game as an AA option would be tremendously useful as it would allow such applications to function, as well as increasing the game’s overall image quality over using FXAA instead.

Also downscaling this game will totally annihilate your framerate. It’s already quite the performance hog in large battles due to the players on screen, but even with that nullified the particle and attack effects are still quite draining. So enabling downscaling would destroy any chance of a playable framerate.

Which is why I prefer suggesting SMAA being added due to it’s far more operable fps hit, while only being a bit more intensive than FXAA’s neglible at best fps hit, it’s still far less resource intensive than forcing MSAA or downscaling.

Collective.9206

Trust me, FXAA is an EXTREMELY lightweight post process that is driven by all of roughly 2 shader files. It is nothing like traditional antialiasing which uses colour sampling to determine what lines to smoothen out, which is where most of the performance cost comes in.

FXAA is a very simple approximation set of shader files. Which is also why it’s a very cost effective method of antialiasing, the only side effect is the image can look blurry due to how it approximates aliased lines and can cause shimmering or the staircase effect on moving images.

Even if this game is cpu bound vs gpu, FXAA quite literally cannot effect your fps performance in the same way MSAA does. Any game with FXAA, and I mean in ANY game, enabling FXAA will not tank your fps, it simply can’t be done due to how low the resource cost is.

I have done it here, in this game – Radeon 7950 in my PC with most up to date WHQL drivers and a i5 2500K running at 4.6 GHz. In mob with FSAA on, 10 FPS, with it off 35 fps. That has been done again and again. It has been noted, on many PC forums, that FSAA is a hog and should be used judiciously.

You are assuming that all this processing occurs using the GPU, and it does not. The modified engine this game uses was written in 2006. You can assume that is what this game is written for, GPUs from that era.

I see where this misunderstanding is coming from. You’re talking about FSAA which is an AMD exclusive antialiasing method forced in the driver control panel which is similar to MSAA and are known performance hogs.

I’m talking about F[X]AA the antialiasing that’s built into the game in the options menu and has next to no performance hit, similar to the SMAA method I want introduced to the game. Because SMAA is a much better post processing antialiasing solution when compared to FXAA.

WRONG – FXAA has a HUGE performance hit on this game. Since the majority of the game is actually done using the CPU, not the GPU, any extraneous functions do have affects on the FPS of the game. Example, in WvW, when two huge groups are fighting, the FPS goes down to nothing with FXAA on, turn it off and you can recover some of the FPS lost.

Just tested this in a big world event with players all over the show at the karka queen, it made no discernable difference whatsoever on or off. FXAA is not a performance hog whatsoever, it is a simple post process effect overlayed on top of the game to approximate as a cheaper antialiasing tool.

You can google FXAA performance charts and almost all of them will paint the same picture, for instance in this review for MP3 http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/06/12/max_payne_3_performance_iq_review/4#.U58asMdfCSE

The reviewer noted thusly:

With No AA the HD 7970 is averaging 63.8 FPS. When we turn on very high FXAA the average framerate drops to only 62.3 FPS. This is only a tiny performance drop.

[Suggestion] Please add SMAA to GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Collective.9206

Collective.9206

this suggestion is hardly any sweat off a dev team’s back as it’s a very simple feature to implement.

Says who?

The framework is already in place in the form of having FXAA, GW2 uses a deferred lighting system so your typical antialiasing like MSAA cannot be forced without some serious driver/profile fiddling, however post processing antialiasing effects such as FXAA and SMAA do not have such a limitation due to it being applied after the game is rendered (which is also why FXAA/SMAA does not show up in screenshots, as screenshots are taken from the game render before the effects are applied)

GW2 engine is only DX9.0C implemented. You did know that, didn’t you? It may bot be implemented in their engine and would have to be.

Also this game is CPU bound, not video card bound.

SMAA is able to be implemented the same way FXAA was into GW2’s engine, SMAA is not purely limited to dx10/11. It is simply a more efficient and better looking post processing effect. Both of these effects hardly have any bearing on a game’s performance at all due to their nature, especially when you compare them to the industry standard MSAA, which cannot apply here due to GW2 using a deferred lighting engine.

Hey all, used the search function and found nothing, and with the suggestion section dead and no section dedicated to technical suggestions, I guess I’ll drop this here.

Arenanet, can we please, as well as your current FXAA implementation, add SMAA to the antialiasing list? Found here: http://www.iryoku.com/smaa/ SMAA has a similar performance hit as FXAA but is far more accurate and less looking like blurred edges as well as the flickering staircase effect that happens with FXAA.

It would take almost no effort to implement as it is a simple post process effect exactly as FXAA is, but it would benefit the game’s visuals tremendously at almost no performance hit at all, much like FXAA.

There is a tool to “inject” SMAA into the game, but as it’s a third party tool rather than built into the game itself so it can cause overlays such as steam, fraps, dxtory, overwolf etc to not work due to how it intercept’s directX calls. So a proper in-game option would be much appreciated and this suggestion is hardly any sweat off a dev team’s back as it’s a very simple feature to implement.

Thanks for reading this short but much needed suggestion to the game. I would much rather use SMAA over FXAA due to it’s similar performance hit, if you can say it has a performance hit, but it has greatly increased visuals over FXAA.

This is not the same argument as the web team making gimmicks, the guys that made this and SAB could as well have made more lasting content.

That I’d definitely have to agree on, the best attention to detail, and well received content seems to be the temporary events like halloween, xmas, sab, F&F etc, it seems like a big waste that these are temporary content.

I had the unfortunate case in where our dungeon run of the new facility in diessa unfortunately bugged out at the final boss gate, where rox and braham usually talk a little, and then the gate opens.

Unfortunately this time they ignored any progress completely and just followed us to the gate and didn’t trigger, we tried all sorts to fix it, all leaving bar 1 guy, backtracking, running from the start wp to the gate and even wiping to see if it helped, unfortunately the progress of the dungeon just paused at the final boss gate before the fight and remained locked. We had all prisoners freed and our micro army followed us to the gate, but the only result was braham and rox staring at us, going “what?”

I will clarify this has only happened to me since the facility move from wayfarer to diessa.

Not sure if this is happening for players outside of Desolation (EU) But Metrica province = Dead. Attempting to load into the zone causes a stuck on load screen which can only be fixed by logging in, guesting to a different server so you log into your previous zone, and then logging back to your home server.

Hope anet is aware of this as new asurans cannot be created because metrica refuses to load.

I have confirmed with other Desolation players that this is a server-wide issue so the stuck on loading error is not on the player’s end.

Good morning all, a few days ago I was booted from the game with a popup saying “You have been banned from the game, please return when the block has ended” That was extreme news to me, so I got booted, relogged in, and found that my character by the name of “You Schmuck” was deemed an offensive name and I had to rename my character. This seemed pretty absurd to me, I use the name everywhere and this is my first time it’s ever been deemed offensive. I even used the exact same name in the betas.

So my first course of action was of course to ask support, after only a few hours wait, I got a reply saying NCSoft does not get into lengthy debates about why a name is deemed offensive, and that I should not pick an offensive name in the future, to which I replied to the ticket explaining pretty much everything about the name as possible, to prove it’s a normal name, not copyrighted, not offensive in a foreign language etc, has no alterior meaning behind it etc. Schmuck literally means, fool/doofus etc. I quite literally use it for the purpose of people replying to me calling me “You Schmuck” I like the quirkiness of it :P

I then got my final reply saying it was not Anet/NCSoft, but a USER reporting it as offensive, so if this is all it takes to get your name banned without any possible review, what’s stopping me from reporting any other player’s name and having a GM skim my report and banning their name?

This is pretty much my last ditch attempt at trying to recover this name for my character, which is currently called Schmuckie (Schmucky) was taken.

Can a GM please see some common sense and look up the definition of Schmuck without pointing me to the naming rules, with which my original name did not fall under any restrictions. I was known on Desolation as “You Schmuck” and I would very much like to stay that way, pretty much everyone I know liked the name and it’s weirdness. For it to be so suddenly taken away by one player who probably wasn’t even offended by it in the first place seems ridiculous.

So in concluding. GMs, please have a heart

Server Stability - Gradually Getting Worse?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Before you jump down my throat, hear me out, from launch up till this point, almost every aspect related to GW2, the website, the trading post, even individual zones have been gradually deteriorating in terms of actual network performance, with the recent wipeouts this is starting to concern me.

I’ll use my home realm as an example, as I can’t speak for the US or other EU realms, but the 3 zones where the dragon lieutenants spawn have been on the verge of disconnection for 2-3 weeks, frostgorge has been even worse, dc’d during the dragon fight, fine, no big deal, these fights utterly destroy any network performance you think you had. But now even without the fight abilities are being delayed up to 5-10 second after you pull the trigger, hell, even autoattacks sometimes time out.

I know GW2 is still “fresh” as it were, and anet needs time to tweak and adjust etc, but it’s getting borderline irritating, I of course report instances of ginormous server latency via the bug tool so anet are at least made aware.

The one thing that boggles my mind is, why does GW2 not have a built in ping monitor? even the first guild wars had one, it helps so much in deciphering if it my internet going down the toilet, or the server itself about to implode from exhaustion.

Thanks for reading, if you’ve had any instances like this feel free to speak up, I just hope these issues can get sorted as it does destract from the game somewhat having enemies that don’t appear on screen until you’re practically eating their face, and the intense ability latency ;_;

Level 80 Asuran Engineer LFG Desolation-EU

in Guilds

Greetings, I have been in guild wars 2 since the first betas and thoroughly enjoy it, however, all of this time (even being 80) I have not actually decided to join a guild, as I’ve been busy progressing exploration and doing random WvW.

I’ve decided to search for a guild because I feel it’s been long enough, and a guild makes the experience all the more sweeter, I am looking mainly for a casual/semi-hardcore guild that dabbled in PvE and World Vs World as I very much love to be in, and help out groups, being an engineer I love the mobility of the class so for WvW it’s a ton of fun.

I will say I am looking for an active guild, not one just starting up, not to get the easy way out, but I love the company of having people to chat to and participate with, I am not fluent in any other language apart from english, so preferably english speaking guilds please.

If you think your guild is active enough in chat and in-game feel free to throw me a message in-game, or post here, thanks

WvWvW - Time To Balance

Hello there, now if you’re like me, done with PvE, hit 80 and like jumping into world vs world vs world for a bit of PvP fun, you’ll notice a major problem in regards to how the population cap itself is handled. Now I don’t know the ins and outs of how players are handled in wvwvw so please enlighten me if this isn’t the case.

It seems to me the borderlands for each server and the eternal battleground only seem to count an overall population limit, as we’ve frequently seen on desolation, we could have maybe 40-50 of us in our entire borderland, but vizunah always has far far more, yet we’re the ones being forced into a queue with so far players.

What I suggest, if this is not already the case, is to simply divide each borderland’s and the eternal battleground’s population cap into 3 equal amounts, so say the cap was 500 overall for a borderlands, make sure the cap for each server in that borderlands is 166 for each team, so world vs world can be a much fairer affair rather than having a server with a large american playerbase and european base being able to cap out any other team from ever winning.

I apologize, but I could find no article explaining how WvWvW currently handles it’s playerbase, so if this system IS already implemented, please inform me so, as far as I’ve seen, it’s definitely not the case as we are always outnumbered, thank you for reading.

P.S: If there is any informative article to read up on for WvWvW please let me know, thanks.
