No matter how many times I hear it and even with understanding the reasoning Anet gives, I still dislike the Dragonhunter name.

The immediate thought on hearing the name still is that everyone is hunting the dragons and the dragons’ minions so why do we get the title? Even with those given motivations (which none of the other specializations have) of being exceptionally against them, a name like Inquisitor or Crusader invokes the same feelings while tying directly to the Guardian’s theme instead of a generic, any-class-can-have-it kind of name. I could see anyone’s specialization be called Dragonhunter with the motivations they gave so I see no compelling reason why it should just be attributed to Guardians.

Yeah, traps do make more sense for a hunter, but then, I don’t exactly see wells being at all related to Chronomancy or why shouts would be on Reapers (especially given that survival-horror monsters on whom they are based almost exclusively don’t ever speak) so that kind of disconnect isn’t so bad on another name.

I didn’t like traps initially but seeing them in action I do love the idea of a Guardian using patience (some even call it a virtue) to lure evil-doers to their demise but the name still doesn’t have that oomph I get from the other specializations. I’m not going to refuse to play or anything since the traits and skills look awesome and it is, at the end of the day, just a name but I really hope Anet reconsiders and does decide to change it.

On the stream, the way they talked about Guardians fitting the role of witch hunter, my immediate thought was Inquisitor. Doesn’t make much sense for traps but I still like it better than Dragonhunter.

Vanguard, Pathfinder, Sentinel, Vindicator, Warden, and Zealot are also cool names I would pick.

I feel bad because Tomes have been with us so long but I understand why and like the idea of Tomes coming back as a specialization. I also like having an elite shout and elite signet which will finally give some competition to Renewed Focus.

Really liked traps seeing them in action. Both some traits and skills definitely are cool with some nice applications in PvP and Dungeons.

Still don’t like the name. When they said they take the role of witch hunters, my immediate thought was Inquisitor so something like that would be much cooler.

1) Shield of Judgement actually doing something useful
2) Move one of the virtue traits to Adept so you can slot one for each virtue (not going to happen but I’ll dream anyway)
3) A nice movement trait (probably as long as Aegis is up get 25% bonus movement)

Shield usefullness?

Only time I don’t use a shield is PvE. Too many times I’ve used shield to knock people who are stomping a teammate or pushed someone off Skyhammer to give up on it. I’ve also used it to get that extra second of getting enemies off the point to decap. With the Power Ranger build being so popular, even the absorb effect is very handy since it can take an entire Rapid Fire (for you or a teammate).

I’ve also found it useful in WvW. Staff is essential but that Shield of Absorption is invaluable if you know how to use it. You can protect a lot of people against a lot of damage if you pop that at the right time while your team can regroup or unload back. Additionally, it is absolutely fantastic in EotM. Not only running into zergs on a bridge and popping it but roaming and getting a group of people to follow you (like you’re running away) to a rocky edge before hitting that skill is one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done as a Guardian.

I’ll agree that Shield of Judgement can use some buffs and I’m sure to maximize your build for use in more circumstances it’s better to use focus. That said, the amount of people not expecting the shield and the havoc you can play disrupting things by doing so means I’m not going to stop unless they nerf it.

[Disclaimer: This is in no way influenced by the fact that I’m going for Flameseeker Prophecies as my first Legendary… Nope. None at all.]

Viability of largos as a playable race

So you say their base system was good but at the same time, you want them to essentially destroy the current personal story and rebuild it from the ground up to be completely different than what it was… Got it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the PS was handled very well and it felt very mechanical (choice =/= organic) but what you are suggesting is completely a complete overhaul of the story and leveling which is a massive undertaking and is (almost certainly) never going to happen.

Also, completely disagree with not needing new systems. At launch, after the personal story was done, you had nothing but dungeon runs that became simple after a few runs, crafting legendaries, and PvP/WvW. The system at endgame was nonexistent so they’ve protracted things with living story. They need a system to build on for the future or they’re going to bleed users because, as I said before, endgame is where the user spend their time.

Getting back to races (so not to have this too off topic), they can’t have meaningful gameplay between them because they have to be balanced and, if they have meaningful differences in gameplay, they never never will be. That means players will be pushed to certain races for certain builds until balance fix and to fill what you were doing you need to switch to ______ race. That’s why they will always just be fluff. Different skins and slightly different quests.

As I said, I do hope they make new races eventually even if largos or some other new race become playable before kodan, but I make no qualms about Arena Net’s necessity of budgeting resources to the long term survival before adding shallow content like races.

Viability of largos as a playable race

Eh, that relief is a minor and very temporary fix. Your race matters for the personal story until you officially choose your Order which means until level 30-40. Most players spend most of their time at level 80 so the vast majority of a new race will be spent running the same content with just a new character model. That’s why a new race is a shortsighted fix with no meaningful gameplay. No matter the race, the gameplay is all the same. Races are only some early quests and a different skin.

Will their new systems actually fix some of the problems? Hopefully but I’m definitely not going to hold my breath. That said, I also hope that once they do implement the HoT systems and, should it fix some underlying problems the game has, that they can then add new races.

As for the OP, I can definitely see them doing that eventually and I would love for underwater combat to get some fixes from it. However, I definitely think they’ll go Tengu or Kodan first. If they do go for largos, they need to introduce largos more and more to put them in the player’s mind. When I saw the thread, my immediate thought was “who the kitten are the largos?” They’re a ridiculously minor part of the story that I would bet very few players know/remember. To have them come from nowhere and take a spot before Tengu or Kodan would cause a severe player backlash.

Disclaimer: I love the Kodan and really hope they’re the first new playable race.

This is thoroughly terrible. What makes this so much worse is this kind of thing is exactly what the game was supposed to avoid. An added gating mechanic, extra item progression instead of skill progression, and limited ways players can obtain the items. Even after all that crap Anet said it was in no danger of doing and designing a game that would never require such nonsense, it still wouldn’t be as bad if it wasn’t for this:

The new additions in November are just the start of our item progression initiative. We’re going to add tons of new high-level content to Guild Wars 2 in the future. As we introduce the new high-level content, we’ll also roll out complimentary Ascended and Legendary items (to say nothing of the other rewards you can earn by playing the content).

Start of. That is to say, the beginning of item progression and the one main factor besides lore that was being taken from GW1. When I got bored of the original, I knew I could come back even after years and an expansion and that I could pick up right where I left off and still be viable. My skill combinations may be out of date but I didn’t have to get new ones unless I wanted to but, most importantly, I NEVER, NOT ONCE, had to get new gear. My monk’s Elite Woven (originally known as the 15k Wanderer’s armor) could be, and was, used well into Eye of the North. Even after 7 years and thousands of hours, I only got 4 sets of armor and 2 were for Hall of Monuments. I never needed them. I liked the way they looked and wore them my entire GW career.

Now though, the complimentary items in addition to starting gear progression makes me think that other content will have their own gimmicky condition requiring the armor to complete the content. If I quit for a year or so again, it seems I’ll have to grind content specifically so I can catch up and play with friends. I wish I could say that I trust Anet that this won’t be the case but considering how much I’ve been burned (first minor things and now this), I can’t say that anymore.

As it stands now, this is a terrible idea. These items having better stats (even if just “slightly” and not even including the infusion) than exotics means an increase in gear discrimination but also sends a signal that Anet is going back on their word about gear treadmill again. It’s a slippery slope to more of the same and, unfortunately, that means gear treadmill.

First they said that max stat gear would be easy to obtain for everyone. Then we find exotics are easy to obtain… for more active/ hardcore players. Casuals are already being left behind as there are plenty of people I know who haven’t gotten more than a couple pieces. Now we have ascended armor that is even more powerful and will probably at least take as much time as exotics.

If they follow through with their (last heard) plans to raise the level cap in an expansion, this might become moot depending on what they introduce but this is pretty telling. If there is some sort of misunderstanding where they are only as powerful as exotics and the infusion only works in the one dungeon to give an increase in stats then I won’t have a problem. Nor would I have a problem is you could infuse exotics through a less difficult process to “ascend” them but the wording of how these work right now… no thank you. GW1 had a lot of problems but the gear was not one of them. Anet needs to look back at that.

Delaying Patches Till Monday: A Faulty System

Yes, I would much rather them remove the DR so exploiters can not only ruin the dungeon experience for others by making it harder to form groups that actually want to do other paths rather than the one that gets the rewards fastest but also ruin it for all PvE players by saturating the market with items and equipment they gained from said runs. That would be a much preferred scenario to having only an unfortunate fraction of players who actually run dungeons to be inconvenienced for a whole week in a game that is supposed to last years. I’m with you.

We may address this at some point.

Address as in add some extra stuff for it’s conclusion or add a continuation?

Because the problem I have right now is after you finish the story arc you hear nothing about them and I haven’t seen anything about them elsewhere (like in the home instance). Picking up the story in the future is awesome but even a word about their current whereabouts while you go off with one of the Orders and then fight Zhaitan is what I (and what I think the person you replied to) is what is being looked for.

Not getting enough tokens

It’s a bug with the diminishing rewards that is getting applied to some people that don’t deserve it (like you and me). They’re working on a fix for it. Hopefully it’ll be patched pretty soon. In the meantime, if you care about the tokens and not about general completion of the paths, I would avoid explorable dungeons.

Where did you read this.

Here and here

Relevant bits:

I wanted to shed some light on the dungeon speed clear stuff as well. You should not see any diminished returns unless you.
1) Run the same exact chain over twice in a row
2) Complete multiple dungeons in 30 minutes or less each.

and

If you run the exact same chain twice in a row you will have your rewards cut. This means you can bounce back and forth between 2 different chains, even in the same dungeon without ever hitting this change. This change is made to encourage people to try different chains.
If you speed clear dungeons at a rate of more than 2/ hour, and continue to do that for some time your rewards will slowly begin to degrade. It doesn’t kick in after running a single dungeon and it doesn’t immediately zero out rewards.

So whats the deal?

  1. Information is being kept from the community
  2. Then the first Dev post on this thread dismissed the post by calling, whats clearly not, a DR.
  3. Then the second dev (Jon.Peter) post asks us to do what the OP did but got dismissed? To this he adds “If you think you are running at a fairly reasonable pace…”

The Diminishing Rewards system is currently if you complete dungeons faster than 2 per hour or if you do the same path multiple times in a row. It is also currently bugged with certain players being affected when they clearly shouldn’t.

… So what, exactly, is the information being kept from the community?

I dig the dungeons

I think they’re a bit too easy as well. I’ve done all dungeons with PUGs (although I haven’t done all the explorable modes yet). When I was with a somewhat organized group yesterday doing three explorable paths, we never wiped (I went down but never died) and at least one run where no one died.

Some parts/bosses are too tedious rather than hard which test more endurance rather than skill (huge HP bars…) but overall still fun for me. If they would work on some more unique mechanics for bosses (like final story mode CoF and SE bosses) instead of just “this boss has a unique attack and lots of HP,” I don’t know if I would have any complaints.

Rate of dungeon completion is extremely high.. what the heck is that supposed to mean when NO ONE WOULD TELL US WHAT’S HIGH OR NOT? Oh, we’re supposedly to just magically know the exactly times it should take us to do every dungeon?

It was said in the earlier patch. Less than 30 minutes per run. Meaning if you do more than 2 per hour you’ll get hit with anti-farming code.

…. Rare case?
More like happening with every other person I’ve talked to..

[…]

First of all… why the hell was I penalized on my first run?
Second of all, should I not have gotten 20 tokens for the 2nd run considering neither run was particularily fast?

The answer is right in the post you quoted. It’s a bug.

And it is just a few players. The people who get affected are much more vocal and have a much higher chance of posting in the forums and talk/complain about it in chat. Anecdotal evidence isn’t exactly valid. Of the people I ran with, 3 got full rewards and 2 (including myself) did not.

Yesterday (about 24 hours ago) I did HotW for the first time in about week and my first time ever doing two of the other paths. Our group took about 2 hours (maybe 2.5) to finish all three paths. Me and another guy got 45, 25, and then 15 tokens (a total of 85) while others got the full amount.

I was a little upset but with the 100 tokens I already had (which do not stack with new tokens for some reason), I still got my first piece of armor so I was able to move on pretty quickly and assume a fix was in the works.

Security?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Dace.3985

Dace.3985

I understand the concern people raise because dictionary attacks are a very real threat and are becoming increasingly common. However, most dictionary attacks have previously known data to narrow the search down including the most common word for passwords (password, qwerty, dragon, football, etc.). As Anet pointed out in the article, most attempts try a specific password and then a variation or two before moving on. The metrics Anet has collected clearly show the attempts are backed up with other information.

Also, comparing a regular brute force versus a dictionary attack is a little bit more of an apples to oranges kind of deal but we can pretty easily see that dictionary attacks would take longer as there are more words to choose from than characters (hundreds of thousands versus hundreds) even if the respective passwords have fewer words than characters (eg. a 4 word password versus a 12 character password).

Does that make the password completely secure? No. If someone wants to hack your account, they’ll be able to do it. But I don’t think Anet ever said it would be completely secure or there wouldn’t be attempts. However, while the tech is available, it is easier and more worth the time of the people trying to compromise the accounts to just skip the multiple random word passwords and hit the targets that have an easy/common password or try accounts they already have a likely password (usually mined from another site or from phising).

Modern common-level security isn’t so much making it impossible for hackers, but instead to make you a less desirable target by making it not worth their time and I think Anet’s advice will help people with that.

I agree that the cost seems to be a little too high and I think it would a good idea to make the tokens account bound. It’s understandable that max stat gear require some investment and you don’t want people to get the cool armor from just being lucky or only doing the dungeon once but the current costs seem a bit extreme for that.

That said, I find it amusing how many people are complaining about grinding a completely unnecessary task. Yeah, it may have the armor that you think looks cooler but that’s it: it looks cooler (frankly most of the dungeon armor doesn’t look that good to me). You know why I do dungeons? Because I find them fun. Unfortunately, this mentality that dungeons/raids are the end game and you do them to get the rewards no matter what is a bit too strong for some MMO players to shake.

Add in to that a lot of people find a build/strategy that works for one dungeon path but does not work for another and immediately blame balance and don’t even consider changing their approach. Not all the time certainly, but definitely a fair share of people. Granted, there are some glitched parts sometimes and I don’t doubt there are some actual issues with balance which definitely exacerbate any resentment towards this change but the entire issue is taken way overboard.
