Of course it was GvG, which made GW1. Random Arenas are same as what we have now – 3 monks go afk, AB was just mini WvW and HA – relatively unstructured variation of GvG….heroway only way..
Still that wasn’t quite my point. The game needs to challenge player to play it and who has the most shinning armor with sparkling sword, doing same amount of dps as the 1 month player, who crafted his gear is not a challenge.
As the game has no real end game in PvE it has to be something more in PvP, which excludes the WvW for obvious reasons. 2 years are enough of watching warriors with a fire field as big as the capture point or dodge roll → invulnerability/retaliation guardians running in circles.
There is one thing that brings people over and over back to a game and it’s the pvp, the feeling of outplaying, outachieving another player. Guild Wars 1 had that and mobas cementified that. If we are not getting new pvp modes, then we need that new class, which will shake up the game. Way better than next feature pack to be consisted of another tweaking of traits readjusting the meta to another dominating playstyle, which can be applied on all classes.
We are already 2 years into Guild Wars 2. Isn’t it quite the time to add a new class to the game, considering that 2 years into Guild Wars 1 we had 4 new classes.
I play all classes in the game, including developing them both in PvE and sPvP (4 champion class titles, 5th on the way), so I have quite a clue about how the game works in all aspects. Nevertheless from my experience I can tell most of us(from pvp point of view) are tired of the constant tweaking and tinkering of the current classes, which cannot be balanced anymore within the current game. We are tired of switching from power builds to condi builds to power builds again every “feature” pack. Yes, this patch is more like a normal every 2 months patch, rather than the promised substitute of expansions.
We have 2 heavy, 3 medium and 3 magic based classes, so I raise a voice and hope it will be backed up by the community – it’s time to bring in the Dervish(I think they had medium armor, but Anet can hybrid him with Paragon as they kinda did with Monk-Guardian).
Class played and loved by many from GW1 that in proper way can bring finally some balance and fresh blood to both pve and spvp. Class that has the potential to finally fight or substitute warriors and bring a new challenge to the magic based heroes.
We need you Anet to remember what made Guild Wars so successful years ago, which was GvGs and the pool of unique classes to play in versatile styles.
@Dimglow.5489
This sounds as the worst thief build I’ve ever heared or seen. P/P thief(which base is actually ZERK to upscale the dps), with venom share from shadow arts(toughness) and soldier amulet, which doesn’t help the case of your venoms at all or the unload dps.
So I guess having a 19k hp thief sitting somewhere in the nowhere with kittens of dps and kittens of condi venoms is the new meta.

As I said in another post : 2 years within the release of Guild Wars, we got Factions and Nightfall. 2 years after the release of Guild Wars 2 the added content doesn’t even match the one from Factions alone…
Sadly there’s no real goal in this game. PvE just farm skins and be fancy sparkling hero. WvW full of horrible players in zerking blobs( I play on Seafarer’s Rest), EoTM level up zone?…not quite as intended in the first place, but that’s none of my business…and the least worked on by the developers aspect of the game called spvp…which probably should be the focus point considering the game is sequel to Guild Wars…GUILD WARS. Not World Wars or Champion Farm for skins Wars..
Well devs just proved that they cannot live up to expectations from the first game and they will lose a big chunk of its audience. I watched BLU’s interview with one of the spvp dev about the future of the game and spvp and basicly he said " we need to take our time and input changes slowly to watch how the meta changes"
Guess what Anet..THIS IS A GAME..not the real world. You input changes and new CLASSES as fast as you need to so you don’t lose your base of players and give them new challenges. I guess for 2 years having just bugged 4v5 arenas, 8 classes with about 30-40 skills each is harder to maintain and balance than Arenas, GvGs, HA and the mini WvW(which i forgot the name from GW1), 12 classes each with 130+ skills.
p.s. And the constant tweaking and tinkering of traits is just ridiculous. Have you thought that you can balance out the game by adding content OUTSIDE of the current one, apropos new class?…maybe Dervish or Paragon?? You would have understood that if your capabilities were beyond coding or maybe your descision makers actually cared about the game.
What a shame…

I wonder how the devs can go to sleep at night and call themselves arenanet on the next day. Guild Wars made itself a name in the gaming world by its pvp and was the best mmorpg pvp as it gets. Now 2 years later we are stuck in the mud with a joke of matchmaking system and no fix for the 4v5 issue. Today i lost about 7 games just because of that and I bet I’m not the only one, but for people who take arenas a bit more seriously and don’t have any consistent team to play with, it’s just a spit to the face.
We don’t care about your fancy chests and how sparkling our heroes can be if we can’t enjoy the basics a pvp match offers as equal number players versus eachother
We don’t care about your new armor avaible only for pvp, when we are gonna play every second game with a leaver or on skyhammer, where people reroll 99% of the times to engies.
What as well I find seriously irritating is by which great mind is the matchmaking designed purely on rank % or position. Who thinks that a 52% winrate 1500 games player is equal to a 52 % winrate 22 games player ? I guess someone skipped sports in school and exactly that person designs the pvp.
I am 100 % sure that half of the staff from gw1 is not included in the developing of gw2, because they wouldn’t let this joke called pvp to last 2 years. I am sure someone will moderate or even delete my post, but it’s the naked truth and nothing less.
What a shame anet, what a shame….
@jherin: You were too quick to critisize my opinion, before understanding what I said.
I unlike many of those whiners and trolls, you were addressing, enjoy all aspects of the game – pve, pvp, WvW.
I unlike many am as well designer and completely know what the processes : brainstorming – having an idea – giving it shape and figure – putting it down on paper – creating a finished 3D product. I also know what kind of mess is actually coordinating different project departments and assembling a product, which is from most if not all points of view ballanced.
Taking all things into consideration I can assume devs don’t have time to produce a major patch pack anywhere near the capacity of Factions or Nightfall. Of course quantity=/quality, but I will ask you something. Do you remember all of “Cutthroat Politics” or “Tower of Nightmares” ? I barely remember anything and sure I won’t remember even a fraction of these episodes within an year.
Now Season 2 is a step forward with the permanent content. Probably in the end we will discover a zone as big as Malchor’s Leap + Straits of Devastation. What we don’t see is a major gameplay change. With the new sandy wastelands of maguuma are we being prepared for a potential “reunion” with a lost class? Maybe Dervish or Paragon? Maybe a new class and rescaling a bit the warrior will bring the much needed dungeon zerk fix.
Things need to shake up.

@Inculpatus cedo : If we are gonna be getting small pieces of land every now and then and the next major features patch brings us just crafting to 500 and a few new skins, I can guarantee many people will leave the game. That’s what I basicly meant to say.
So better Anet feel a bit of heat and pressure, because next major patch will pretty much decide the fate of those, who are in the game since its release. I can’t really imagine many players sticking to GW2 for years just for the sake of item skins. It would be a shame if devs don’t see this coming.
I completely agree. I am playing both spvp and pve and have as well the option of playing good quality of WvW being on Seafarer’s Rest, but if we take a look over the past 2 years the added content is a bit thin.
Sure living world is good and innovative, but it has become for over an year the main course of the game development. Why is that not good ? Because living world is temporary content.
I am an architect myself and I know how actually hard is to design and visualize things, but for 2 years a game, which is aiming for top mmorpg, has actually given less than expected(giving the fact this is not Anet’s first game, so they aren’t “new” to the task).
spvp : skyhammer, some elites, merging pve pvp skins and a worthless matchmaking system
pve : Fractals, Aetherblade Path in TA, Southsun Cove, a tiny piece of land Dry Top and numerous tweaks and buffs.
And when we take a look back at Guild Wars 1:
Prophecies Release – April 26, 2005
Factions Release – April 28, 2006
Nightfall Release – October 27, 2006
3 Continents, a ton of new P E R M A N E N T content to explore and in the meanwhile having one of the best, if not the best PvP mode in RPGs.
In the architectural world Guild Wars 2 feels to me a bit like a pavillion as a concept itself. They come and go, make a bit of fuzz around it and then noone cares or they are deconstructed due to lack of usage.
Living world should be a side project, maybe First after the main project, which is Guild Wars 2 itself, but not turn the game into the main course.
After all living world as an idea is supposed to mirror the dynamic of our human world itself and things in it are made to endure and self-sustain, not to be changed week after another like handkerchieves.
p.s. Please don’t mix up the constructive critisism with whining, because if people were always happy with what we have existing there would never be progress.

@skw Your build really makes me sad. This is not halfway through a condi build. Anyway I don’t get either why would you play cond thief in WvW…does even less sence.
Ye I said it as well, the burst build is a lot about luck. Will you get off the crit on the first strikes or not.
Also what I forgot to tell the angry guy @dreztina is that ye sPvP is not as viable balance indicator as GvG in Guild Wars 1,but sure as hell WvW isn’t ANY factor for skill builds and pvp in particular.
To intercept any probably troll answers like “you play on a copper WvW server to say that”,I play on Seafarer’s Rest.

First off, obviously this post is about wvw since you don’t see those numbers in spvp. Secondly, low movement options? Are you kittening serious? The thief that killed me in half a second jumped instantly from a mile away using multiple teleports. There is no lack of movement for burst builds. And bad survivability? Ya, it’s really hard to survive when you can go invisible every three seconds.
There’s no l2p for fighting thieves. It’s a broken class with broken mechanics. Thieves will never be balanced until stealth gets neutered to where it needs to be. It should have been an extremely limited use, short duration tactical ability, not something thieves spam every time revealed is up since it is always the optimal action.
Bursts on thief are based on critical strikes and deadly arts.To do those numbers as crit thieves equip signets, which automaticlly EXCLUDES STEALTH UTILITIES.He jumped you with 1/2 shots of shortbow, infiltrator signet hit(with basilik venom) followed by cloack and dagger followed by steal. You know that after 1 shot of shortbow takes about 1/3 + 1 point of initiative. After 2 shortbow blinks he’s left wtih 2 points. If you can see him jumping from “mile away” i am sorry you are too bad to dodge his first strike after which thief combo breaks and he has to run.
Where are those stealths every 3 seconds in the burst build tell me.I have more than 1000 games with thief only in pvp..probably there’s some secret combination of venoms + crit from deadly arts and critical strikes that make me stealth? The only stealth zerk thief has is his HEAL.
Conclusion : Either the thief that killed you wasn’t d/d zerk(shadow step/shadow trap(which is the only skill that can actually teleport a thief through a HUGE distance if there are no obstacles in the way)),he got lucky with the crit chance and you have zerk equip or the thief was full dps and you were too slow to react to an incoming 1 hit miracle thief.

I play all professions in spvp(as I focus only on the pvp gameplay, rather than pve or WvW) with a main thief. Those builds with signets are plain horrible, because you are actually effective(if you land every hit) one time in a period of 40-50 seconds.Low movement options, bad survivability etc.Such build can only exist in WvW where you can fight 1 time in 5 minutes-burst someone down->run away with shortbow.
When you play some real PvP like the tournaments with over 40-50 rank, then you’ll see that thief is ONLY good for roaming points, picking off someone on low hp and again short bow-ing to the next point.
If as an ele you can’t at least escape a thief with such newbie burst build then the problem is in you.Thieves based on crit dmg never jump on ele without help, cause it’s plain stupid.
As a profession concept thief is MEANT to burst and we’ve seen only nerfs since the dawn of guild wars 2,after which we became only roamers and a free kill in teamfights.
So as you eles can constantly buff yourself with armors and regens, thieves can and should do huge amount of burst.Else why bothering at all playing a thief, when you can just roll warrior with even bigger amount of dmg output, heavy armor,20+k hp and 10+seconds of dmg ignore.

My main is thief, since the release of the game and I have 3 alts-ranger,necro,engi and I split my gaming time between pve and spvp,so I have a pretty clear view of the capabilities of most classes in all game aspects.
Thief right now is making me sad.I wouldn’t really care about the stealth nerfs, happening these months,if we HAD REASONABLE relative easy accessable damage output. In high end pve we are forced most of the time to play ranged, cause we get instakilled IF you are equipped for “high dmg” which is even lower than warrior’s output. If you are equipped to survive in PvE and want to go melee, better don’t.Still you will do more ranged with zerk.
So what’s actually the concept of a thief overall, not just in GW2,but in similliar other games.THEY DO DAMAGE,THEY ARE MOBILE and easy to kill if not careful.
We need completely redesigned venoms.I mean what the f*** is in the developers heads with this bunch of crap about kittens a venom, which in pve is a joke,in pvp if u get the first hit off,all others get blocked/evaded and you are just left behind with useless bunch of utility.Unable to chase, unable to do real nuke damage.
We need a grandmaster or a combination of grandmaster traits, which unlocks a special critical damage %,that should be at least 1.5x or even 2x greater than a normal zerk build(on any profession) with a proc chance of 7-10 % and cd 2 sec for example. This is a concept of a thief based hero overall in this type of games.
By now our damage was always and still is quite dependable on stealth and I agree stealth should not be perma-spamable,but it’s nonsence to nerf stealths and leave us with crap like these venoms both in pve and pvp and have the same critical damage % as any other profession.
People don’t play this type of profession in any game to do conditions like in ice drake venom?!(3 attacks ?!?!?!) or torment?!We play it because we should be able to do HIGHER than other classes pure or critical damage.

Let me get this straight.People here are complaining that their RANGED 20k+ hp and that other dimension version of a necro can’t do the same in a PvP as the MELEE around 12k hp thief ?Are you people serious ?Talking about balance? How is this balanced if a necro can do the same amount of dmg and condition stacks as the thief, whose strenght should be PvP(only thieves know how much it sucks on farming events in orr, when your computer is not worth 6000 usd). Why should I play then thief if my PvE event/dungeon AoE DPS is limited and a ranged hero can do the same as me in PvP?
