Having a REALLY hard time to pick a class!

It sounds like you want to do everything at once. This is not how GW2 works. Many classes are flexible enough to do multiple roles, but to optimize per role, this can include specialized gear stats and trait choices.

So if you have multiple sets of gear, which can be expensive, you can swap your traits around, and be able to quickly change the role your character is best at. You may be able to find a middle of the ground spec that is pretty good at a lot of things, but you’ll still lose at 1v1 when the other player is heavily specialized for 1v1 and you are a generalist spec. That player sacrificed their large group / utility for the ability to win 1v1 (with skill).

If you want to get good at a specific playtype and playstyle, watch youtube videos or strategy guides for that particular type of play.

Heavy armor classes and Necros have some builtin tankiness that can be increased on depending on the stats you choose (don’t expect to be tanky in zerker gear), so you could start with one of those as you figure out what playstyle you want to go with.

Feedback: Guild Wars 2 Mac 64-Bit Client

For the old 32-bit wrapper client, I found this reddit post that helped edit some config files to improve performance:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3nbh4a/how_to_instantly_boost_fps_on_mac_client/

Will doing these tweaks make the 64-bit version worse? Are these same configurations used on the 64-bit version? Are there tweaks in here that could improve?

Mousewheel / mini-map bug

I have been annoyed recently by a bug that started happening randomly. My mini-map would seemingly randomly zoom way in or way out.

I finally figured out the cause. I think this must have started when action camera was added, now that I think about it.

Basically, while not using action camera, and holding r-click to mouselook, the mouse cursor is actually hidden but still able to be moved down to the mini-map corner. While holding r-click, if I move the mouse around where I think the mini-map is and start spamming mousewheel zoomin/zoomout, the minimap moves instead of my main screen.

Other data points:

1. Players can carry 10-15 supply now instead of 15-20 (+5 was readily available).
2. Guild cata cost increased to 50 from 25.
3. Side keeps in borderlands can no longer be capped with a single set of catas for both walls.
4. Auto-fortify when low amount of players are online result in fully-fortified walls/gates that take a lot of manpower to dig out of (skysplitter mitigates this a little bit).

Comparing previous to now, the low-population borderlands often relied on gcatas to take anything, especially bay/hills, which would 99% of the time not be upgraded in your own BL since attackers weren’t willing to spend time/money to upgrade.

As an example, 5 new players, all with +5, could carry a total of 75 supply. Veterans could hold 100 supply. The 5 new players could carry sufficient supply for 3 guild catas, and the veterans four. This is plenty of catas to take hills or bay, if the defense isn’t there. If enough guilds are able to achieve +5 status, part of this problem will be mitigated.

In the current world, 5 new players will carry 50 supply, veterans 75. The newbies can build a single gcata or sup ram, and the veterans also can only build a single. Enter fortified gates, and this ends up needing 4 loads of supply (3 resupply runs) to break a single base, unless the vets get lucky with supply mastery and get two regular rams.

Against fortified gates / walls, even two superior rams / catas take a LONG time. The only viable methods here are really to get 15-20 people (which almost never happens in low pop servers) or do golems. Golems are probably the only answer that makes much sense currently.

A lot of people find the combination of these challenges too much. Granted, 25 supply guild catas was pretty broken, and getting two walls for a single set of catas is pretty broken, but not thinking of the low population servers was short-sighted.

Possible suggestions:

1. Some sort of scaling “low population” buff in your home borderlands that scales supply capacity per person up to double normal, to offset the inability to accomplish much in the off-hours.
2. In all borderlands, require someone to push a button or at least interact in some way with the keep/tower/camp to start the next upgrade. We should add the myriad upgrade options are before to require more button presses (12 for keeps/towers, 4 for camps if I recall correctly).

I think we also need to compare the EB keeps / SM difficulty of capture to the new borderlands. Main gates of the keeps can both be hit with a single set of rams, and even SM can be attacked with proper catapult positioning to take out the gates with the same catas used to hit the walls (I think 2 for 1 is bad in these situations and should be fixed, but low-population servers need to be considered for side-effects).

I haven’t spent much earnest brain cycles on thinking about better solutions, so I’m sure there are much better solutions that can be thought of.

Anet, love all the work you have put into the new borderlands, they are very pretty and interesting and well-done. I’m just sad that the community we have built on my low-population server is self-destructing due to side-effects of these changes.

Server merges for low-pop WvW?

We can clearly see that the new WvW maps seem designed around the high tier servers. After guilds finish upgrading guild halls, WvW may be back to normal.

But the low-population servers are feeling huge pain. Instead of forcing people to abandon their low population server and lose friends who inevitably won’t all move together, how about announce mergers for the lowest population servers? Then people could stay together and get the needed population boosts.

WvW is the only thing that doesn’t benefit from the megaserver changes, we need some serious thought put into helping people who have lost their preferred playstyle without forcing us to no longer play with the friends we have been playing with for the past 2-3 years.

Also, allow recently transferred players a refund of transfer cost and allow them to participate in the merge process if needed.

GTX 970—FPS drops to 7 about once a month

So I followed the recommendations in the sticky to update the Nvidia control panel power to high instead of adjustable or whatever, and it seems like some of the hitching has stopped (I didn’t even notice that there was hitching before, thought it was just some sort of loading lag). I’m going to wait and see if the problem ever recurs, if not, my theory is that adjustable power got stuck in low power mode and didn’t come back up to full perf.

Video seems more snappy in general. Going to mess with power profiles etc to make sure I’m always getting full power in-game but not while using a web browser.

I have a GTX 970 which is usually really good. I can’t reliably reproduce this situation, but usually my FPS is between 25 and 60 depending on how busy the area is. I have an i5-3350p and 16G ram.

When this problem happens, I don’t even need to reboot, I just restart GW2 and framerate is back up to very fast. I turn my computer off every day, and I don’t have other programs open.

I got the GPUZ program to monitor my video card, and it says my performance is capped by “util” which apparently means the GPU utilization is capping my performance, which makes me think the GPU just isn’t getting requests.

Has anyone else hit something similar? It’s maddening because I never ran into this problem with my 560 ti. The only reason I noticed this is that my “old” comp that my wife plays on is right next to me, and in wvw the 560 ti is still putting out high framerates. I duplicated the graphics settings, and still the 970 is stuck at 7-8 FPS until I restart GW2.

I know that the 970 has issues with certain ranges of memory which are super slow due to one of the graphics units being disabled, but it’s supposed to automatically not use the slow area of ram. GPU-Z tells me I’m using nowhere near 3.5G which is the threshold for when the slow ram could be used. I’m only in the 1.4-1.8 range.

Does GW2 force specific memory locations? It’s really frustrating that I can’t reproduce this. Anyone with a 970 come across something similar?

Ideas for other WvW "special events?"

1. Buff commanders week- Commanders get actual buffs, not quite as much as siegerazor, but significantly more toughness than a regular player. They also can provide cool auras, and can spend points on special “command” traits after they have fully unlocked all regular WVW traits.

2. Shifting storm week- every PPT cycle the storm color-shifts to another faction who gets to do double damage.

3. No target cap week- skills can hit unlimited targets.

4. Speedy OOC week- while out of combat, double speed.

5. Naked week- everyone’s gear provides no stat bonuses this week

6. All Random spike week – all spike animations randomly cast anything this week. Also, different spike animations provide fun buffs and/or death penalties.

7. Tank golem week- golems get a special “shoulder rider” slot that only asura can ride in, providing an extra gunner.

to auto target or not to auto target?

I often like to change whether auto target is enabled or not. Basically, when I’m travelling through a zone and don’t want to fight my way through it, I want to be able to use my movement skills without beating on the closest neutral (or not) monster.

However, when I’m in the middle of a fight it’s annoying to get un-targetted and have to keep hitting tab to lock back on, so during combat I like auto-targetting enabled.

I found a setting “lock autotarget” that doesn’t work how I expected. I thought I could hold this down to prevent my target from changing. However, holding this button down seems to just “lock on” to the target that I would lock on to anyway if I had auto targetting enabled.

Anyone know if there is a way to “force notarget” so I can run straight forward in the few instances that I want to not run at the nearest neutral mob / run away from someone in wvw? In my searches this functionality just doesn’t exist yet.

Seems like the next best (quite a bit worse) option is to just disable auto target and hit tab or something to choose a target.

It’s just annoying to lose the convenience I enjoy 98% of the time to cover the 2% when I want to use a movement skill to no target.
