Hurricane Sandy Interrupts our Halloween Event [Merged]

So many negative replies. Seriously, what’s up with that?

All the OP asked for was that the devs consider extending the event if power outages occur due to the hurricane.

How does that negatively impact anyone? How does that constitute a sense of self-entitlement? How does that warrant any of the snide, snarky comments that have been posted here?

Seriously, people. Get down off of your high horses, stop waving your peckers around, and take his request at face value. It’s not an unreasonable request. No one who suffers power loss due to a natural disaster does so by choice. And while you can argue that the devs aren’t under any obligation to satisfy every request, it is in their best interests to do so in this case for a number of reasons.

For one, there’s precedent. For another, it fosters good will among the players. And finally, there’s the PR.

Try to see things from a bigger perspective than your own.

How long is a reasonable time to evaluate game developement?

Fixing bugs is a VERY complex task. If you don’t do it for a living, let me assure you, you have no idea how difficult it can be.

Software systems, especially those as complex as an online game, can involve millions of lines of code. They can involve systems developed by different companies, and the developers have to try to get them to all play nicely together, even if those systems don’t WANT to play nicely together.

Typically, when a bug is reported, the developers don’t have a lot of details to go on. And details are CRITICAL to fixing a bug quickly.

Before they can fix it, they first have to be able to reproduce it, so that they can figure out what’s actually causing it. Then they have to figure out how to correctly implement a fix for it. Then they have to code the fix for it, and test the fix internally. And while all of this is going on, other development work is happening, and they have to make sure that any fix that they introduce doesn’t break something else in that enormously complex code base that is trying to integrate many different systems that don’t want to play well together.

There is no such thing as a bug that is easy to fix. Nine times out of ten, your first guess as to a cause is the wrong answer. You have to keep digging until you find the real cause, and not the symptom. Otherwise, you’ll end up just putting in a band-aid, and your system will end up looking like the tail end of a Jenga game.

Be patient. If the bugs are taking a long time to fix, there’s a reason for it. It’s because rushing to fix bugs is more harmful than taking your time and doing it right.

Should Anet Allow the Community to Make ADDONS?

in Suggestions

I have no particular preference for add-ons.

If, however, they were to be done, I would suggest that ANet provide direct oversight of them. I might even suggest that approved add-ons be distributed through the store, and via no other mechanism.

In that way, add-ons that provide exploits or unfair advantages can’t be integrated into the game. And if it becomes apparent that an add-on is becoming a “must-have” addition to the game, it can be reviewed for either “official inclusion” (because it’s good) or forcible “bricking” (because it’s effect on gameplay is detrimental).

What might solve this, actually, is an additional hotbar for consumables. Allow us to set binds for the slots in the hotbar.

@Ebrech,

You do realize you can change the body style during character creation so that you don’t have chest hair, right?

And what’s wrong with chest hair, anyway?

Bizarre Name Restriction

Some folks are arguing that this is about a lack of creativity on the parts of the player. It’s not. It really isn’t. From a software development standpoint, the developers must satisfy a legal requirement to ensure that the game’s T rating is met by providing as broad a language filter they can.

What is suspect here is the implementation of that filter. As an earlier post showed, they should be able to filter words and phrases by language and culture. What seems evident is either a lack of ability or a lack of willingness to do so. And therein lies the problem. Because they either can’t or won’t, players must perform mental gymnastics and settle for less than optimal names because the existing filter system is too hamfisted.

This isn’t the fault of the players. It doesn’t reflect on the creativity of the players. And whether or not the desired names would be snatched up instantly is irrelevant. What is under discussion here is the implementation of the naming system. It’s too restrictive. And that’s why players can’t have the names they want.

A possible workaround is to remove the restriction altogether when creating the character, but to add a new toggle in your Settings dialog that operates exactly like the profanity filter. Its default state should be Checked. While this setting is checked, player names appear “censored” in the game. But there is nothing preventing you from creating the name you want, so long as it is free. If you uncheck the setting, you can see the names exactly as they were created.

The caveat here, of course, is that by unchecking the box, you agree that you will not report anyone for an offensive name. You agreed to view the names, just like you agreed to turn off the profanity filter.

In my mind, this solution opens the creativity door, while still allowing ANet to filter names with a reasonable degree of “hamfistedness.”

For the last two days there’s been a number of high-level turrets set up in Diah’s Farm in Shiamoor, on top of a hay bale. The moment a spawn enters its range, it one-shots the mob, so that the players in that area get no XP or loot for the mob.

What I finally observed, however, is a guild come in, tear down the old turret, plant a new one, and plant a Guild XP Banner next to it. Then they left the area.

So what’s happened is that guilds are planting the turret and an XP banner next to it, then leaving the area to let the turret accumulate XP for them while no one from the guild is anywhere near it.

It’s ingenious, actually. But it’s creating all sorts of problems in the lowbie area, where folks are trying to complete the quests like stomping the worm mounds, defeating the giant worms, and protecting the hay bales from the bandits.

I don’t know what the appropriate solution to this particular problem is. But something should be done about it. For example, if a guildie isn’t within so many feet of the turret after so many minutes, it automatically despawns. The turret I saw appeared to have been sitting there for two days, based on conversations I had with folks in the game.

I’m open to suggestions, and am adamantly opposed to squelching fun or implementing systems that would be excessively harsh, but what’s going on here is nothing short of botting.

Character's Physical Appearance!

I was somewhat surprised that there is no “barber shop” or place where I could go in game to have my appearance altered. This is a world of magic, after all. Alterations to my physical body can be explained away with a wave of the hand and a few mumbled words about the gods and their thanks for all that I’ve done for Tyria.

So, yes. I’m completely on board with a means of changing a character’s physical appearance after it’s been created.

Changing races? That’s a bit of a stretch. Although other games have such features, it would take a far more compelling bit of story telling to make that fly. It’d be like trying to force a square peg into a round hole; and it just doesn’t sit well with me.

Still, if the effort to do so were not cost-prohibitive, I would not be one to deny players something that gave them the power of choice. More choice and freedom to play and enjoy the game longer is a good thing, so long as it can be achieved without breaking the bank, and provides a reasonable return on investment.

HELP ON HOW TO MAKE GOLD??

Adding to what mercury said, remember this:

Frequently use the Deposit Collectibles feature of the Inventory window. This will move any collectible items directly out of your bags and into your bank account. Later, when you have time, go to the bank and review what you have stashed in your bank, and pull out large stacks (multiples of 10) and sell them in the trading house.

My best advice is to match the lowest price on the market. This will sell them fastest. But if you want more money, strike a price somewhere between the lowest and highest prices. It will take longer, but your stuff should move.

Note that when selling on the market, you won’t be notified that your stuff has sold. You just need to check the Pick Up tab. (This surprised me, as I thought my stuff had just vanished.)

NEVER SELL COLLECTIBLES TO A VENDOR! You may not want that stuff for cooking, but folks who craft with it will pay good hard cash for it, and typically more than a vendor will. The trick is to remember that they prefer to buy large stacks of it.

Why is travel more expensive than the best reward from DEs?

in Dynamic Events

\This is a level 20 vs. a level 80 travel cost. It’s really really silly considering money accumulation doesn’t scale. It’s relatively flat.

It really really is not. If you know what you’re doing at 80, the cost of waypoints is in no way prohibitive, but it is high enough to encourage players not to use waypoints to get everywhere. This is by design and it is a good design.

I have to respectfully disagree with this point. During one of the earliest stages in the game, the first scout tells you that it is easier to use way points to cover large distances than it is to run. He is plainly encouraging you to use them.

I would submit that since that particular scout is “breaking the fourth wall” by explaining the user interface, he is a representative of the game developers; he is telling you what they would. That point being that the way points are intended to be used to cover vast distances, as a matter of convenience.

I agree with the OP that travel prices seem a bit exorbitant. This would be especially true if if they scale with your level, and not merely with the distance traveled. However, my opinion is based solely on anecdotal evidence, and bears further investigation, since I have no hard numbers to base it on.
