You’re missing the point. This game was marketed as an MMORPG, it was all about continuing the story yada yada yada. I didn’t spend hours researching it. All i knew is that i loved GW1, and this was called Guild Wars 2. Can I be faulted for expecting it to be at least similar?
I’ve never played any other MMOs, ever. Guild Wars was the first, and obviously the last. again, if I wanted gear to be irrelevant, I’d play dota or LoL. otherwise, they need to re-market this is an RTS and refund everybody who bought it for the MMO element, IMO.

It’s stands no where that an MMORPG is a game where the time you spent there = a reward. Just because an MMORPG got a strong focus on PvP, ain’t it suddenly Dota or LoL, it’s and MMORPG with PvP. And yes, it is your fault to expect it to be like GW I, because you know what? They made it clear all ready in the beginning that it wouldn’t be anything like GW I. If you like to rush mindless out and buy stuff without reading about it. Then it’s your problem, just don’t come here complaining you didn’t get what you “thought” you would get.
Really? no skill, come face me in a 1vs1 Elysian Rose.5283:, and we will see if it’s just a matter of “spamming”
So basically you’re telling me they (insert oldest profession in the world in the verb past tense because kittens) the Guild Wars name to sell a game that was nothing like it. Shame on them then.
pls do not make this game ever a gear treadmill, there’s a lot of us who enjoy the game as it is gear-wise atm and most of us don’t come to the forums because we are playing.
also the making gear “worthless” in pvp has always been my dream in MMO’s, finally it happened! thank you Anet!
Why don’t you just stick with LoL then? The PvP is much more polished because… it’s a PvP game.
If Anet wanted to make this a quasi RTS they should have stipulated that from the beginning. I sure as hell wouldn’t have purchased it.
well, i would say “why you dont stick with the other MMOs where you can win because you have better gear and not because you play better”
while i don’t see the sPvp in GW2 as a “quasi RTS” i ask you:
you want power from gear on pvp? why?
you want to win because of your gear, and not because of your skills?
Dude, please don’t insult the gaming skills of everybody on here by suggesting it requires skill to play GW2. You have number 1, which is your autoattack. Then you have cookiecutter 2-5 that you have no control over and any other players of the same class and the same wep have THE EXACT SAME THING, so there’s no tinkering. then you have 6-10 which are going to be nearly identical to everybody else, because anet was too lazy to make a plethora of skills like gw1.
so, click 1, auto attack, spam the other skills. and before you tell me i’m playing it wrong, I was like, 80-3 in WvW in less than 40 mins. this game requires no skill, just an ability to click, press 1, then alt tab while you go read something/watch something more interesting.
again, if they had said from the beginning they were making a pvp quasi-rts, then i’d have had this coming. but this was an MMORPG-branded sequel to another MMORPG. Don’t act like I had unrealistic expectations.
Why dont you let her play what game she wats to play and respect the fact that she paid for the game and is entitled to as much enjoyable content as you are?
Because she, and others like you, are trying to change and ruin, one of the core selling points of the game I and other players brought. We knew what we brought, we got what we brought, and we are happy about what we brought. It’s not a matter about I don’t want to let her play what she wants, in fact that exactly what I’m telling her to do. What you, and her, is misunderstanding is: This is not one of these games, and you should to to try force changes to the core functions of the game “just because you brought it aswell”. It’s the same when I don’t go, to Rift, or SWTOR or WoW, games I all brought and complain and DEMAND they change into something they never was meant to be.
To fell like you have every single right in the world to DEMAND whatever that please you in a MMO, just because you paid as well. It is Our word against your’s, the difference being we want the game as it was created, and not changed it into something the game designers didn’t want to create. Is it really that hard to understand? If you want to play GW II, that’s fine, but stop trying to changed it into the standard dull and boring MMORPG, because that ain’t what it was made for!
and I’m having a blast of fun in both PvE and PvP. The PvE in this game is by far more fun for my taste. It’s an opinion, and they are different.

So, you think a game where the time invested alone in grinding for gear gives you huge advantages is superior to a game which relies on reaction time and versatility?
Cause then I frankly do not understand what you liked about GW1 which was never about grinding gear or time invested. (no, I am not a complete casual player today and certainly wasn´t back then, GW1 from day one both pvp and pve, from Ascalon to DoA).
And what items are you talking about? There are no p2w items in the shop. Are you talking about gems for gold? The superexpensive stuff is mostly cosmetic and exotic max gear is easily obtained by casual gameplay, so I do not see a p2w scenario here.
I can somewhat share your feelings about catering to casual players ruining gaming experience for more invested players I feared GW2 would turn out to be this way, but I just cannot see it applying to the product – I am not saying it is perfect, but that profound doomsaying just has no foundation.
Just wanted to say I’ll reply to this when I get home.
Just gonna post this link here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/This-is-maybe-just-not-the-game-for-you/firstThis is for you, read it and think about it
Well, if we’re self-referencing, let’s revisit a post by you, Mozart:
It’s a game where we don’t have to do anything at all, to do everything there is in the game.
And again my eyes glaze over as I contemplate the fact that you were trying to say this as a compliment to the game.

Sure, we expected it to be different, not a playskool MMO for divorcees who can play in between changing diapers.
Should have just renamed it. No way you can defend how bad they’ve gutted with the name ‘Guild Wars’ in it. :-/
Well, do you expect anyone to enter a reasonable argument with you after THAT display of your fine character? I am sure everyone with a real life totally thanks you now for showing them their place.
Just calling it how I see it. It’s a casual MMO for casual players. The reason I brought the divorcee thing up is I actually saw a post by some single dad who was over the moon that he didn’t actually have to play the game to get stuff out of it. The horror of actually having to spend time in the game! Whodathunk?) My personal opinion is that it’s pretty disgusting that they’ve created a game that’s catered to these sorts of people, but hey, just my opinion. Don’t worry, ArenaNet won’t change anything because people like that are just as over the moon to spend real cash on items they could never otherwise obtain.
I started to hate the gameplay, but wanted the rewards.
So basically, you couldn’t be bothered actually spending the time to get the gear, or to enhance your skills/strategies so that you could get the gear more quickly, and so you gave up.
Poignant, really, and it’s what so many of us have been arguing here. This game is for casuals who can’t be bothered, and would rather just buy the stuff with gems.
Your post is almost too good to be true.
Haters gonna hate. this is the best mmo ever made for the casual mmo player.
I have over 200 hours in game , and my highest character (of 6 ) is 34 so far.
This game was not built for hardcore gamers. It’s not hardcore gamers who are doing the whining. The majority of complaints are that the dungeons are too hard, the dungeon armour takes too long to get, mobs one shot you, mobs have too much health, the karma armour is too expensive, the waypoints are too expensive.
The people making these complaints are not hardcore gamers. Hardcore gamers have no problem with spending months getting a set of prestige armour. They have no problem with spending hours theorycrafting and improving their performance in game.
I’m not saying they’re casual players either.
The mistake people make all the time is trying to say that the whiners that appear on every mmo forum are casuals or hardcores. They are generally in fact just impatient, bad at the game and unwillingly to improve their own skill. The amount of time they play per day doesn’t have anything to do with it.
What skill would you be referring to? The ability to actually click an enemy before a teammate amongst the screen mess that is a DE or boss fight, or the ability to keep autoattacking whilst alttabbed? I’m confused.
well, then voice those points and do not chime in with someone claiming “now that they have our money they do not care about customers anymore”. And it is not the majority of players that subscibes to your description of the gameplay.
This point has been made before, in the thread with 10k views, that the majority of players right now will not be playing in a few months, so that point is really invalid. Go read that post if you’re actually keen about it.
I’ve been reading forums off and on, And what I am not getting is the hate. Granted there are some bugs, There are issues with trading post, Some people have issues with money and prices.. So lets look at this separately.
Prices on gear: Things like culture gear I’ve seen two posts about tonight. Granted the price is rather steep I’ll admit but it gives players something to do, Something to work for and wear with pride.. Stats suck but tis the reason we’re given transmutation stones. The gear with karma and dungeons yet again, It’s not suppose to be easily obtained, Nor should it.
Dungeons: They’re hard. I’ll admit that from running with people who don’t know them, And I’ve done them with people who know them pretty well. I do agree they’re semi unrewarding to players who believe zerging only works. They’re punished for this. I know it is stupid to compare WoW but since most gamers come from this it’s just easier to mention. This isn’t a game where the gear makes or breaks you, This isn’t gear check. It’s about the combination of the abilities you’re group uses and the timings depending on the situation. You can zerg of course but you’ll be punished.
End Game: There isn’t a lack of end game, You’re just not seeing it which is understandable. End game is you’re dungeons on explorer mode, Once again I hate comparing this to WoW but since most understand it better… When you did heroics and geared for raids? You did more heroics which really served no purpose (Most the time) It was a endless grind to make most people feel accomplished. Instead of ArenaNet giving you the endless grind they just give you the grind for the sets, Which are unique. If PvE doesn’t fancy you there are arena type PvP and Mass murdering slaughterfest of WvWvW.
Economy: Now this.. I completely agree with people on. The economy sucks least for me. However I will admit I could grind more for gold and craft things if I choose too but that is on me, And I do believe the trading post is a little too cheap to make much of a profit but once again, It can be done if people are willing to put the effort into it.
Overall, There are many things to do. However I think too many people are way more concerned with that they’re use too. World Of Warcraft became a big hit, Many more games attempted to copy their success with little hope. Each time a new game was released people did not like the difference, If people stayed they were introduced back into tier raiding of the never ending grind.
I think people have gotten spoiled and do want more quicker, Whether or not they got it from WoW, Or some other game I do not know but many started with WoW thus why it’s easier to compare. This game is fantastic, Some people experience more bugs than others. Some can’t find the end game. Some just are not comfortable with the end game since it’s out of their element. I am not bashing anyone who dislikes it, Or disagrees with me but I just feel that some people are missing it. I hope this helps some folks..
tl;dr You’re missing out on a lot more than you may realize.
People are complaining that the game is aimed 100% at casuals who are happy to fork over money each week for vanity items that they can’t get legit in-game. That’s all. The game isn’t fun for the actual gamers here. We’re not just complaining about the endgame, we’re complaining about the entire thing.
“This man speaks the horrible truth.” No, this is as childish an argument as it gets. If they shut down the game now, yes. Just because anet does not play the monkey for every player´s whim it does not make evil masterminds. But as this forum is slowly turning into a lodge of tin foil hat wearers, I am not surprised of such nonsense.
They spent six years or whatever making a game, they wrote their manifesto (which turned out to be a pile of crock), and they kept telling us things like, “It’ll be real fun to learn skills we won’t throw them all at you at once” when in reality it meant that we’d auto attack for 2 minutes, then we’d autoattack while pressing 2 for 2 minutes, then same for 3 and on and on. These forums are full of posters who have documented the rubbish they’ve been spewing.
There aren’t any tinfoil hatters here, just disappointed players who can see that this has turned into just another company out to make money, and don’t get me wrong, that’s Arenanet’s prerogative. But many of us are genuinely disappointed.
It does us a disservice to assume we’re all anticapitalist freaks or something.
I guess you already have my (and most others’) money, so perhaps there’s no good reason for you to listen,
This man speaks the horrible truth.

“Well, now he and everyone knows that GW2 is not GW1. Now hopfully we can move past this and either adjust/adapt or find enjoyment else where.”
I see this kind of idea all throughout the gaming world, people come up with this idea of just adapt, just adapt and it is so flawed. Why on earth would I ‘adapt’ to something that is worse? I remember quite clearly 1 year ago this same very argument was used for Halo Reach, people said just adapt, you don’t like it because you haven’t ‘adapted’ and i warned them of the imminent failure of the game. Lets look at the game now, 20k people on at night, 1 year after release? That was a far cry from the previous game when in the same situation still had 300k! I fear this game will suffer the same fate, on a side note this is another reason why sales is not an indication of whether the game is good or not.
The key is that now Halo is all about the casuals (all the pro halo players hated Reach), and that’s obviously the path ArenaNet have taken. Don’t have the skill or the time to get the best gear? No problem, just buy it! Actually, that overstates the situation, since gear means nearly nothing in this game. I miss my staff heads and sword hilts :-(
You have to excuse 80% of the players for buying a game with dungeons, gear evaluation, crafting, and MMO team combat for expecting there to be a reason to play past 80 in PVE.
I hit 80 today, already have the best gear pieces in the game (my wep), and after I finish up the 5 mans on explorer mode (which I have been having fun with) the game is over for me.
I am thinking they really should have advertised this game as a pvp arena game, with a long lead up. 1-80 is done purely for PVP, after you hit 80 there isn’t much to do other than craft (but like I said, normalized items means this is pretty useless) or PVP. Sure you can run endless dungeons for cosmetic wear, but all you are getting is a shiny version of what everyone else has.
I can see why this game was big in every other country but the US. Outside of aesthetics there is no replay value in PVE.
I’d say that’s a pretty big overstatement. I wouldn’t say the game is ‘big in every other country outside the US’; I’m in a guild composed of Aussies and Europeans and everybody I’ve talked to has been a bit disappointed, except for the pure PvPers, but even they complain about balance issues, although those are easy to fix.
These are the answers I wanted. Thank you.
In my eyes, this game will just be one of those “play once all the way through” games. Guess this game wasn’t for me after all.
We can hold out hope for a huge patch, can’t we?
Hilariously (and I’m really not making this up) I say thank you every time somebody resurrects me, and I’ve said “thank you” so many times that I get this error code unless I modify it to, “TY” or “Thanks”.
It’s funny, but it’s also pretty pathetic.
Mostly agree with you. Good luck dealing with all the fanboys who will simply accuse you of being an ignorant consumer and actually having the gall to expect that loot would be part of your MMO experience. Since I’m so negative about this game all the time, I’ll second that the graphics are absolutely beautiful, and the music, too! Two things they got unreservedly right!
Yak, I hate the game in it’s current state, but your posts/comments are always a pleasure.
Event scaling is truly bad atm (let’s call them Binary DEs). 1 min you’re getting 1 hit KO’d, the next you might as well not be there, with what seems like little in between. Bosses are especially prone to this.
Here’s another one that particularly makes me mad because they started deleting OP’s actual posts too:
The censorship has been a mess from the begginning, first banning hilarious names like “Adolf Critler” and then thinking it’d be a good idea to change every possible naughty word in the world to ‘kitten’. Really funny Arena Net. Hilarious. <Said nobody, ever.
<Removed – Do not make company call-outs ~ Dalmarus>
This game is all grind, all the content the promised will be memorable and fun is not there.
Crafting is a joke it’s either pay to win or it is a grind. Either way, you get top tier craft gear which completely replaces anything you get from dungeons and without the ridiculous prices of the dungeons.
Dungeons simply don’t give enough tokens to get the dungeon armor. I am not going to do 70 runs of the same dungeon to get a full set of cool armor. I am not going to waste my time doing that, I don’t have time to do that even if I wanted to. Arena has a very distorted definition of grind if they think this is acceptable.
Legendaries are only there for people who have enough time to sit on theirkitten all day and play this game. I have obligations that aren’t about getting redundant shinies.
Anything past 20 and all the sudden the areas are bare of any sort of dynamic events and the events that you do see are simple “defend this area from hordes of X” or “lower X moral”. Whatever happened to the huge branching events Arena? What happened to all the events that are supposed to be impactful? In Orr? Well I apologize if I don’t want to get to 80 to see all this content, that is what happened in WoW and every grindy MMO I have played. I thought that maybe this game will have enough fun content throughout the game to keep me playing, I thought that I would still be having fun after level 20. I crafted from 60-80 because I got terribly bored of the main game. I have yet to do a level 80 dungeon because I will get absolutely nothing out it besides Gold which is completely redundant because it can be purchased.
What happened to this game being for the people who don’t have time to play the game religiously? I thought you guys didn’t need to hold my attention through grind because you aren’t getting money from me monthly. What benefit do you get from me grinding out dungeons or legendaries?
sPvP is the only thing in this game that I feel they delivered on 100%.
Oh look, another poster who was posting his legit concerns and got infracted for it.
What a community.
The argument that “this is not the game for you” can be true for some. In other cases the argument can be “improvement from criticism”.
(Bla bla bla a good post, just no need to quote that much)
.Tha’ts where GW II shine Gehenna… You don’t need to gear up! It won’t matter. It ain’t about you gear, it’s about your skills and the teamwork you have with the group you go to the explore dungeon! Yes, you will get a little higher stats with full exotic, but it haven’t stopped me from doing anything yet!
Did you play GW1? Do you know how insignificant items are compared to GW1? Don’t even mention them :P
I think MMO’s shouldn’t teach people if somethings not fair whine till “you” feel that it is. It should be more like real life, as in if its not fair, adapt. LIFE ISN’T FAIR, deal with it and be happy, because if you can’t even do it in a video game you will be miserable in life.
This isn’t about the game being fair, it’s about it being fun and rewarding in a dopamine kind of way. That’s pretty obvious at this point.

Well, now he and everyone knows that GW2 is not GW1. Now hopfully we can move past this and either adjust/adapt or find enjoyment else where.
I seen this once, when Everquest 2 came out. Everyone ran to it thinking it was Everquest with better updated graphics. And if i recall correctly one of the guys, his name eludes me atm, said that was one regret/mistake they made with the game. (Naming it Everquest.)
So, I guess a lesson we can learn from this is, next time a company creates a game and uses a 2 after the name sake, go in looking for a new game unless otherwise stated.
Battle, just give yourself/anet a chance. If you can’t then not much anyone can say or do to change that for you.
Cmon, listen to yourself.
A sequal should be the development of what you have in the first game. We cant just remake the concept because anet droped the ball. What is Mass effect 2 to 1, what is Skyrim to oblivion (even though theyare 4 and 5) and what is Ninja gaiden 1 to 2? Just to give a few examples.
GW2 is the de-evolution of GW1, and that is hardly acceptable. The game should be called GWzero.
If they’d simply left the ‘Guild Wars’ part out of it I don’t think they’d be having this massive backlash. There are a lot of expectations with that name, a lot of great memories and fun times and future hopes all because of the name, and you can’t reasonably expect people to separate a seminal game like GW1 just because Arenanet said they’re going to make it different. Sure, we expected it to be different, not a playskool MMO for divorcees who can play in between changing diapers.
Should have just renamed it. No way you can defend how bad they’ve gutted with the name ‘Guild Wars’ in it. :-/

The fact that the first post in this thread got flagged for an infraction says all you need to know about the GW2 community.
Some dude eloquently outlines his problems with the game and he gets reported.
Pathetic.
The OP has had his moments, and he certainly did not deserve an infraction for that post (what was THAT about?), but I’d not go so far as to call it “eloquent”, for heavens sake. I’m not sure how you can suggest that without dissolving into giggles.
Dynamic events were the worst implementation of a pitifully bad idea I can possibly imagine for a video game…essentially a boring, monotonous hackfest that begs to be ALT-TAB’ed…Scaling is pathetic…profoundly boring…It’s profoundly boring, every single time…This, of course, doesn’t even address the fact that dynamic events themselves are boring…I’d rather find a rusty fork and plunge it into my eye…"
The thing is, I actually SHARE some of his complaints about DE’s, but if this is how one frames their criticism, they are not being “eloquent”. They are being hyperbolic, and they are flame baiting.
For somebody who is airing his grievances with the game, i’d say it’s eloquent. People use hyperbole to be funny or to make a point at times. I’m just saying, enough people obviously reported those first posts that there’s a infraction sticker. It’s embarrassing really whether you agree with him or not.
