So for those who missed the live stream yesterday, here is a transcript of what Colin Johanson said about culling (25:45 in the video):

The January release you’re actually gonna see our first kind of major improvement in that area what we are gonna start doing is models that load in around you are gonna start being replaced by a sort of a lower res model that is a placeholder one until your full models characters are loaded in.
So this will fix characters that load into you, load in invisible next to you for three seconds, or
if somebody uses a mesmer portal to teleport next to you they won’t be invisible for a little while and killing you.
You’ll see their model instantly and they will draw in under a low poly and then transform up.
That’s kind of the first step is to deal we the immediate issues: how do we deals with models that we want to get and show them very quickly when you need to have that information
the next major step is how do we show more and more of that stuff, show more players, and more things on screen. And we are building toward that.

Can we expect big changes in WvW to shift the current state of battles in WvW which are mostly zerg against zerg (the way to win the game now) to more interesting battles.

Can we expect new gameplay/incentive/anything to push people to fight in smaller groups at times, more powerful ways to defeat a big zerg in a plain with siege engine (not possible actually for example to fight at 10 vs 50, no matter how many siege engine you have), … etc

The best of subtlety being to be able to split the zerg in two or three at some moments. But doing so, result mostly by being crushed by the side able to gather everybody in one big zerg on the map.

In short what can we expect to see more subtlety and strategy into WvW ? In what way ?

(the question doesn’t concern culling, and the interest it can give to play in a big zerg as I think that when the culling will be gone the question will still make sense)

As we are clarifying some things, is it intended that some thief builds can take out a door like on this short video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3t6dRLPMktQ (the flame rams are ours/the defenders of the keep). Is it a bug, or something unintended like retaliation on the siege weapons ? Should we report this for fix ? Or find the great build our opponents found and use the same ?

I’ve never understood that argument. According to Vizunah players, it’s the same players that plays during the day, during the night and pretty much at any other time coverage since the beginning.

If that’s true. Shouldn’t they have ended in the hospital or be dead by now? Cause I see no way how a normal human being can play 22-24 hours a day every day for the past few months unless they’re vampires / human cross breed.

Well maybe not 22-24 hours, but I’m one of those players and I do game sessions from 10am to 4am, not every day of the week but once a week during the week, and on other days I can still play a lot when the matchup is interesting. And there are a lot of people I know who do the same on Vizunah.

Troll post from the OP. There is ways to celebrate victory, this one is dubious. And then there is the hate in reply. It’s funny how the winner never deserve to win. It’s funny how if you’re not a “known” guild you don’t know how to play. It’s funny because I know many of Vizu guilds that we always go for a fight even outnumbered. It’s funny when there is full days where a server is ahead in the income and still it’s all about PvDoors in the comments. It’s funny how there is many more elite people on the forum than in the game.

So as always the problem is mostly people and their attitude. To those being fair, I say GG, was a nice matchup, SFR is interesting to fight, and we look forward to see what Deso will bring to the matchup.

I do not want to offend anyone, but … Honestly, of all the guilds of VZ, during the dominance of BT we mostly saw only one guild that really never gave up and fought in the most hopeless situations – it’s Hold Up (HuP). We really started to respect the morale of those guys. The rest prefer to sit on the EB, appear closer to primetime or then VZ was in control.

Obviously you don’t know us very well, maybe you didn’t switch map enough …

Same, trial system worked much better for me. Now we tried the trial, and you reverted, it really shows that the trial worked better.

The trial system makes it harder to use lag and culling to fight, which of course is a good thing (fights are actually fights and not lag fest).

Covenn summed up the progress on lag pretty well.

As much as respect RG fighting skills, the fact you find MOS so awesome to fight says much in what a poor state WvW is, and the poor vision top guilds or at least individuals can have from it.

Maybe they should add a very big plain with nothing on it so you big boys can have your wonderful fights.

Also like somebody said, the fact that you have to choose between your magic find set and your stats optimized set. You do your dungeon and then at the end you’re like “If only I had my set on maybe my loot would be better” then again I don’t want boss fight to go any longer and always wear my stats optimized set. Magic find should be in a specific slot or something.

Feeling a bit disgusted when I finish a dungeon shouldn’t be what I feel.

Yes that too, make exiting loot. We can’t get better gear so make some cool stuff to loot, whatever it is (pets ? food ? something). getting white items and token I’m not even sure I need is not a big incentive.

Boss with less HP, a fight shouldn’t last longer than 8 minutes, but should instead be executed properly. More bosses mechanics. Rift should be an example of good boss mechanics.

More challenge though mechanics, less death 10 minutes into the fight because …. because you’re not sure why but everybody is dead and you have to go through this huge amount of HP again and you just want to quit the game.

Fractals is a step in the right direction, but fights like imbued shaman are just … long and boring.

Here is a video I made to show how the event looked on servers with a lot of lag. In this video there is a first server with a lot of lag, I got kicked from the game because of the lag, then I find a slightly better overflow server where I finished the event.

Before that I spent more than one hour, looking for a playable server, I tried 5 or 6 different servers, some were far worst than the one in this videos (40 secs+ out of sync).

You can see skills lagging a lot.

Expect from that, I think people covered the important point, in itself event looked like it could be good. The reinforcements phases far too long (could have been at least half long). The rewards felt good for once, so it shows that you listened to our feedbacks. So maybe too ambitious.

If players need to figure things out for them-self, the logic should be followed to its end, and Tags on servers should be removed. And no, massive NA communities on EU was not on the feature list. Anet can’t say NA is the international ladder, EU is the ladder for European community and at the same time authorize big NA on EU ladder, it’s not logical. It’s like authorizing New Zealand in the 6 Nation tournament because they are playing Rugby too…

From there we should launch an operation called “Expose the Elephant”

And Zid: it’s the best WvW we have seen in a while, so I don’t see any reason to call out their designer skills. The biggest issue is only about massive transfers, there is way to fix that, and they are not impossible.

I think there is change comming in the way WvW works, and nightcapping, not saying anything about this being good or bad, right or wrong, but I think that’s what A.Net expect to do, fix the gameplay of WvW and they thought they could take the time to do that. A bit of nightcapping was just an aspect of the game. Now big guilds have moved, it’s all broken badly I agree. But they will have a hard time fixing that if they don’t want to merge (and it may involve technical difficulties that are not stated, added to those mentioned).

But when a large community come where they are not supposed to be (as stated in the faq), they can technically be there, they don’t violate any rule, and A.Net can’t do anything about people who already made this choice. But EU community is asking for bigger switch time (more than 7 days, and gems costing transfer between NA and EU after the first choice). We just don’t want massive NA communities moving in our ladder, breaking the balance without the possibility for us to have a fair fight (for that it would require merging ladders and it’s not happening) . Except from that, everybody can play wherever they like.

Now we have NA communities in both ladders having fun, and EU players having nowhere to play WvW properly. Let’s add that massive NA players on EU players don’t help with the queue for players on those servers, and may add latency but that’s something else.

Now I have a question, if ladders are not merged because latency is an issue, what do you make of huge communities (2000 NA players) coming to play on EU servers ? Doesn’t this make latency for EU servers and players when NA players play all together at night ?

If things that are hurting us (EU spoiled ladder experience), are done for latency, what can be done so we are not hurt again because they make latency on our servers that are not merged with the NA ladder because of latency ???

Well it make sense orb bring a bonus (or why hold it), what could be done is that keeping it cost more and more as time goes through (orb doing damage to the keep holding it or something like that). Keeping an orb should be challenging in itself, the idea of having a dragon attacking the keep with an orb, would be even more awesome, but a simpler mechanics would be alright too.

Even as a player on the winning side on VS, I think night-capping everything in three hours and thus undoing everything that was done in a day is a problem. Especially when orbs are so powerful. Now I’m not sure the solution is about restricting gameplay for those who play at night, but they should face some kind of opposition. A better out-manned buff for the losing side that’s one thing.

Somebody had a great idea, saying that a big dragon could attack wining side (castle with the orb for example) when they get a very big lead in score. The idea itself might not be something doable, but I find the good idea there, is events happening when your getting a high percentage of control of the map, or all three orbs for example. I think players ideas should go in this direction and be creative.

Wanting to alter score depending on population seems nice but it would create so many other problems. Matching up server from EU and NA would not solve the problem, it may be good for some servers, but it might be worst for others.

Server transfer is something that will be fixed in one way or another.

If you want a solution, you need to think big picture, focusing only on the time of the nightcap will only give you “bad fixes”, the kind that you reproach to A.Net later if they implements them. “Oh A.Net you killed the game, Vanilla WvW was better ….”

I think more than 1 week would be a big overkill, after one week there is a huge gap in score between servers, one more week would just drag things along for everybody (losing or winning side). It’s quite nice to have this goal of every Friday night wait for the big reset.
As it’s one of the most interesting time to play (after a reset) it’s a bit sad it’s so late for the Paris/London/Madrid time (2am).

When you take a fort, you check if nobody is hiding in it after, it’s part of the metagame now. Nobody can really hide, as you see tag name of your opponents and there is no invis. There is some good hidding place in certain big keep, it’s part of good player knowledge to learn where they are. This trick has never been pulled on us for keeps taken by our guild. Guess why.

So it seems there is no point in arguing with our VS “mmo-pro’s”. It’s pretty obvious that they are enjoying this situation and night shifting PVE is just their playstyle.
Clown reputation is still reputation, guys. GW2 community will remember you as such.

This is not true. We can hear the argument that night capping it overpowered, at least I do. Countless time it has been said, that if Desolation or FS was able to pull up the same strategy they would, and FS was indeed able to do it on friday night.

We only defend the fact that we as we Europeans/French did it to face false claims that it’s done by Canadians that nobody saw. You’re the one speaking of “Clown reputation” which is disrespectful when people representing VS like Troma are not. We can debate in a positive way to make WvW better but you are the one being insulting.

And it’s not like the game has been out for years, it will be improved, on everybody will a have a chance to show what he is able to do in combat. A.Net never left PvP die. Remember heroes battle. If it’s not balanced, it will get fix, one way or another. Meanwhile, we are playing the game when we can, and that’s it.

Do you guys imagine anybody who wants to play, quit WvW just because it’s 5am and it’s not fair ? Would you do it in the same situation ? Saying yes would probably a big lie.

Anyway friday night, when I went to bed at 4, we were ahead in point, not far but ahead, and wake up to find the canadian/russian players tagged the forts during night and went 10K ahead.

Then we slowly reduced it to 7K through sunday, despite fighting all afternoon on desolation map, vs Desolation and FS at once, trying to get bay fort.

Proving night capping may be a problem, to fix, maybe with population taken into account for score calculation. And proving there is no need of speaking down to us, when you do the same.

We put a fair and even fight on Desolation map all week end. I hope A.Net do something about night capping so I don’t hear about it anymore. And I don’t think you earn respect by claiming “We are clearly the best, look at this week end between x am and x pm” for a week long game. Part of this game is to get organized on the long run too. Sunday night not too late, we were behind from 8000 points which is not something we can’t get back from even without night capping. We played all day, and night on normal hours, and we want respect for that. Night capping is an issue in itself. As I said on other thread. If FS or Desolation was able to pull it, they would too, maybe not you in particular but people would. Then I would like to see you play at any time and say "no I’m not gonna cap this point is not fair.

You were loosing, clearly and by far, this weekend. You were 10k points behind FS. That tells me, and many others, much more from the state of your server than the current scoreboard. However, no one should insult you or anything. Night capping clearly works, and it’s a valid strategy if you want to win the 1 or 2 week rotation. As long as you do it, you’ll win always – and by large. However all that said, it’s still completelykitten way to win and you really won’t get any respect for doing that. Your “victory” is mostly meaningless to most of the people. We, on FS, beat you on weekend – on a fair playground – and to most players, that is what matters. =)

And then again, I have a lot of respect for how FS played this week end, clearly overwhelming us at times, and it was very frustrating for us to get only 20 players in the game of our guild, and see very big groups of organized Nugs, when we couldn’t bring that many people in. We don’t blame Nugs, but we know that if some stuff were fixed it would be different.

So. A.Net will fix some things, and hopefully the design will be more fair. We will meet countless times again. And we will see who is the best (probably won’t be everytime you, won’t be all the time us). Please respect that, and don’t claim “We were clearly the best”. I respect that you were the best at times, and at times we were on top too, with the same amount of people on all side. When I stopped Sunday, not too late, there was 8000 points gap, which shows two servers that can put a fair fight. Time will tell. And may the best win.

I don’t either, because our achievements (and there are some) gets covered by commenting which is not really fair either. I would love to see fights like this week end, all week long, that everybody think is fair. I think almost everybody in our alliance think the same way, even if it means we get in second place.

Then again, for now night cap is a thing, and I think if Desolation or FS were able to pull it, they would without any ethical thinking as it is designed like that. So lets speak of the design and stop trashing us players (And I don’t mean you Mescaline, as we indeed agree on the state of things).

I do have a life and I do have a full job, but this job allows me to play late at night. Lots of French people can finds ways (especially uni student, who didn’t started school again). It’s ok to say that we can be up at night when you can’t, because you have a different way of life and other constraints, but please stop to be insulting. Thank you.

Stop with the Canadians, they barely exists (I have seen none yet). People play at night, very late, but they are French, some are from my Guild (we are a 400 people guild, I didn’t heard of a single canadian), I work full time, then again I stayed until 4-5 am several times, and some other stay up to the morning.

Night cap may be a thing, Canadian people isn’t when French people play until 8-9 in the morning, time were more French people wake up and take their shift.

And it’s true, we are not special, Nugs for example were far more organized on our map than our guild ad alliance (which with queue is only able to bring 20 to 25 people tops in WvW). And it’s our dedication, and some creative strategies that kept us alive. Overall Shiverpeaks is a great opponent, and I hope Arena Net can find ways so we can fight in a way almost everybody think is fair.

I didn’t say there was an agreement on Dreaming Bay (because I don’t think that), I think in a way Desolation preferred putting pressure on us on not on Shiverpeaks (and it makes sense, especially as everybody knows what is gonna happen on week nights).

And I think in a way I agree with Mescaline, I don’t feel good to see a gap of 14000 thousand waking up when we were down 8000 when I stopped last night. Then again you can’t throw rocks if dedicated players want to play at night (and only can fully play at night because of queues), how is it more “fair” than outnumbered map at peek time, or a spawn camp for a while because you can. It’s not.

But in a way I would like to see an improvement so night cap is just something between a lot of strategies, and not something that can create a gap of 20000 or more in 4 or 5 hours. So it that way I join the concern of my enemies.

I think that if you want respect from your opponents, you should also respect them. This week end on Desolation map, Vizunah was seriously cornered by both servers, we saw Desolation groups not attacking Shiverpeak as they were both inside “Dreaming bay”, and “helping” them taking down the inside castle. And Shiverpeak doing the same thing several time (leaving Desolation groups alone when they were attacking us).

Is that bad ? No it’s the game really. That’s what we were explaining to people raging on our map. It’s fair as it is how WvW is designed. Nugs and other guilds put a LOT of pressure on us this week end, if was even worse with Desolation wanting to stay in the game and putting even more pressure on us. CPC guild and allies defended for 10+ hours “Dreaming Bay” completely out-manned on this map, walls were broken for several hours, etc… and really it was great fun. This castle was fully upgraded and defended all over the week end, at peek time, with huges buses of Nugs roaming all over the map, and Desolation attacking it all the time, when they could have targeted castle like Etherion. So sure we were disappointed to lose it, to two forces not really attacking each other. They both wanted us down, it was clear. Nugs especially played very very well a lot of times, and we can handle, that is the way they played that made them take the castle. You don’t see anybody complaining on the forum it was two against one.

So please, as we can discuss what to improve WvW, even this “capping during the night thing”, but please be respectful if you want us to be too. We don’t insult the way you play, it is frustrating of being out-manned at night because you don’t have guilds mobilized at this times, I can feel that. It was frustrating to see Desolation putting most of the pressure on us as Shiverpeaks was in numbers, and in the lead. But really this is war, people putted great efforts all over the week end to prevent the gap of the score to go crazy. And overall we had the greatest fun since the start of WvW, it seems Shiverpeaks people too.

Ability to exchange a piece of god armor for another

When arriving at level 70, if you don’t spend your time on the forum you meet the first god karma vendor of exotic armor (the 42k pieces). At this point you don’t realize there is 6 gods and vendors. Then later you realize the set your started to buy (because for example you are a mesmer and you like “Lyssa” as a a character in the game), already costed 84k or more karma and began to understand there is 6 sets with different stats and only one good and optimized set for the build you run. Had several guildmate in the same situation, so I guess we are not the only ones.

=> It would be great to have an NPC to give a soulbound piece of a god for exchange of the same one of another god (you could even pay some karma or gold for this service),. But not having to grind (again) 80K karma for no good reason in a non-grinding game, would be nice.

It’s even worse if you decide suddenly you want to play with a staff instead of a greatsword, or just try it.

100% zone map completition = cheaper waypoints in that zone

I think the issue should be resumed to “large party” has a too significant advantage from the ability to revive downed friendlies, such consolidating on a strong number even when a small group of people is doing a good job at taking them down.

What can we do about that ? I don’t think it’s about the total HP when down.

  • ability in WvsW when a guild claims a fort to lock some of or all the resources
  • less expensive TP, I understand gold sink, but feeling constrained in my love of traveling is really bad. I would rather keep that for real life (where I already need to spend a lot of money to pay for car, gas, toll on highway, trains). I hate that. Let me be free in an virtual universe I like. Make other goldsink, like mini-games or whatever.
  • to expand WvsW possibilities, making gigantic and organized buses of people shouldn’t be the best way to win. Issue is the capacity for very big groups of people to break through almost everything. There should be counter-attacks to this. Small groups doing efficient things should be a counter (doing what I don’t know). Arrow carts when they are fixed should be able to help. Maybe smaller objectives all around the map should contribute to the final score (a good way to split the players).
  • clipping needs to be improved (if we could see at least the “name tag” of opponents before we see them completely).
  • autoloot in inventory (at least for the “badges of honour”) in WvsW seems like a must
