Writing a couple of paragraphs about how much you love your game is easy. What counts is what is actually done about it. I went into GW2 with my DAoC guild, full of hope. Why? Because we absolutely love DAoC’s open world 8vs8 and have long longed for a more up to date remake of RvR, which is what WvW was hyped up to be. All of us quit the game after almost one month of trying our best to make WvW work. It does not. PvP in this game is broken akittens very core, and I believe it is because ANet has a lot of great artists, but very little talent in game design. In GW2 everything looks great, but nothing works quite right. But let me explain why WvW was a stillbirth (and partly why sPvP does not work either, though none of my guild mates were interested in instanced PvP anyway):
- Downed state. This mechanic alone makes the game almost unplayable in any serious manner, but the worst part are its implications on other parts of the game. It gives ANet an excuse to let people die for bullkitten reasons and also not to have dedicated healing, because after all, you don’t really die right away, you just get downed. It also creates an insanely toxic mini-game of trying to get around all the nonsense involved with actually finishing people. Stomping with Stability, Stomping while stealthed, Stomping with Quickness, countless ways to interrupt Stomps, high downed HP pools, Rallying on stupid targets etc.
- Very little open space. WvW is cluttered with mobs, nodes, cliffs, camps, towers, lakes, narrow corridors, bridges and most of all nigh-instant respawn, which turns everything into a casual zergfest.
- No dedicated healers. It’s MMORPG PvP design 101: if your game does not have spammable direct heals, it will fail.
- No real grouping and especially no speed classes. This means that instead of actual groups forming, the players are encouraged to just mindlessly follow the blue taco.
- No CC immunity timers.
- Bad itemization. Power classes could just farm a day or two and craft their Exotic set. Condition classes were kittened.
- Horrible class balance. While my Bleeds were tick(l)ing for a hundred something damage each, our Warriors and Rangers were busy blowing up 5 people in 2 seconds.
- Tagging. Why on earth does everyone in the group have to tag every single mob, let alone player? This alone makes WvW a chore.
- Loot bags. Similar issue, you needed a loot macro to not go crazy with those stupid loot bags. Unfortunately the loot key also makes you rez, stomp, pick up kitten, and enter siege equipment…
- Inventory clutter. Why does my inventory have to get filled with random nonsense while I’m trying to do PvP? So that I spend cash on more bag slots?
- Bad ability/class/weapon design. About half of my traits were bugged, only one weapon loadout was viable and even today the traits layout for at least two classes still makes absolutely no sense in practice.
- Bad controls. Why is camera panning so sluggish? Why is strafing slow? Why do knockbacks make me rubberband?
- Low FoV and camera distance. Casting stuff at people on keep walls is an aggravating task. Keeping any spacial awareness requires you to constantly flick your drunken camera around. Your character takes up most of your screen most of the time, and all of it when you are trying to look up.
- Skillshots. In MMORPGs you use your mouse to pick targets, to turn your character, to place GTAoE, and to pan your camera. You do not use it to aim kitten as if you were shooting a gun in first person.
I could go on for a while longer. There are also a large number of issues not directly related to PvP, mostly mechanics meant to inconvenience you. Why? Because you can get your Quality of Life back by spending cash on gems. Then there are mind-boggingly inane issues like using the login server for ingame mail (any first semester IT student should know that login servers are bottlenecks), Trading Post, guild features etc., which resulted in our guild losing out on tons of gold and Influence because the login server couldn’t handle the load and we were effectively guildless for the first month and couldn’t sell things efficiently.
And what do we get now? Rushed PvE farming grind content every two to four weeks. Why? Because it makes people play a lot (which results in more gem sales because they buy bag/bank slots (inventory clutter), transmute stones, new Minis, skins etc.). Not because it’s good content. It’s the game design equivalent of making junk food.

Took me five tries. The first two tries the red circles were invisible, so I just died. Third try a spawning orb instantly pulled me into the AoE and I died again. Fourth try I got stuck trying to loot the crystal thingy, dead again. Fifth try worked fine.
0/30/20/0/20 with Exotic Rabid gear.
Liadri as a Ranger sucks far more since your pet is useless.

This is so sad. I left the game 2 months after release because of how many bugs Necros suffered from (and how broken WvW is). To see that there are still this many bugs just shows how AN only cares about making money through gimmicky events and cosmetics but doesn’t fix what is fundamentally wrong with this game.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
You get punished for voting. Brilliant.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
They should make persistent content, e.g. finally turning WvW into something functional. But I guess these disposable monthly events generate more money because people rush to get those “exclusive” items by either grinding or buying gems.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Hints missing:
- Laurels
- Pet Swapping
- Gem Store Purchase
I’ve tried the usual attempts to “fix” them (e.g. have your pet die to a mob, then kill the mob and wait for the hint) as well as clicking the daily box to get the Laurels hint. Neither worked.
Any ideas?

AN only knows two answers to the question of “How do we make X challenging?”
1. It’s going to one-shot you.
2. It’s a jumping puzzle.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Or the people that play it.
Broken loot. Check.
Non-refundable wxp traits that say one thing and give you less? Check!
Widespread graphics issues? Yup, check! And that’s only the major bugs introduced by this PVE patch!
And that’s okay because they hotpatch the PVE stuff on the hour and in return we get:
Supply Mastery.
Hey Anet, keep it up and even getting 200 wvw ranks will be impossible as we’ve all quit the game in disgust.
WvW is your golden goose and you’re starving it to death. WvW is the only thing that GW2 can offer that many other games cannot.
Then again, you (anet) don’t care do you?
WvW was a stillbirth. Everyone I knew from DAoC was looking forward to having RvR 2.0 with a fresh engine, netcode and decent control scheme. All the things that DAoC didn’t offer. But WvW just never delivered. Only Soldier’s gear. Extremely tedious loot system. No real grouping. Downed state. No dedicated healers. Broken buff/debuff stack system. Overpowered classes. Bugs and exploits up the rear. Having to tag every single target to get any reward. Broken CC and immunities. Nigh-instant respawn. The list goes on. So again, every serious 8vs8 player I knew quit the game after at most 2 months.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Make GvG a part of sPvP. There, fixed. But this is Anet. They’ll probably add cars to the game long before we get GvG…
No, don’t make it instanced and thus boring and repetitive. The reason why everyone I know started playing GW2 and quit after 2 months was because they wanted RvR 2.0 (i.e. open world 8vs8 fights). But there are too many things wrong with the game so that decent group PvP never developed.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Way to exaggerate by getting the camera as close as possible and making it look like the issue is far worse than it is. This is not how the game looks at all times so stop pretending it is. Your post is worthless at best and doesn’t help or contribute in anyway other than to advertise your childishness.
This is not zoomed in. This is how the camera always looks when you’re placing AoE on keep walls looking up.

Yet another game where the winner is decided by who’s willing to play cheesier.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Yeah, night capping ftw.
Anything we take during prime time is irrelevant. In the morning the germans will still own every single objective.
Nope.
We took everything on Friday and your guys tried to night cap starting at 5 am Saturday.
Though our night shift stopped that attempt.
Now it seems everyone transferred away from the two English servers.

I finally have all 3 weapons (Staff + Dagger off the TP, Scepter crafted in Mystic Forge) as well as 4 out of 6 armor pieces (2 Khilbron’s, 2 for Karma… even just getting the Karma Merchant to spawn is atrocious).
Still, the best earrings are green, and from what I’ve seen there are no fitting items for the amulet, back or ring slot whatsoever.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Buy gems in the cash shop, turn them to gold, buy stuff from the trade post.
At least that seems to be the way AN intends for you to do it.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
I don’t quite understand what AsianGForce meant by “all the ways to make bank”.
You get a huge penalty on the rewards from the DE at level 80? Or no rewards at all?
Thanks in advance.
The gold sinks don’t really kick in until you’re nearing max level. Aside from those books you need to unlock traits, you’re not really spending any gold while leveling up. At, 80 everything becomes different:
- Explorable dungeons are expensive. They’re designed so that you die a lot, resulting in huge repair bills.
- Crafting is expensive. A lot of the materials needed to make stuff have to bought from NPCs.
- WvW is expensive. Siege equipment, keep upgrades etc. cost huge sums of money.
- Getting gear is expensive. In order to get Exotic gear for my necro, I need to farm ~170k Karma and spend ~30g on random drops, since the type of gear I need cannot be crafted, either.
- Waypoints are expensive. And just walking is not exactly easy in the two LvL 80 zones, since almost every single mob their spams CC on you (snare, root, knockback, Death Grip, stun, daze, …)
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
The reason is rather simple. Blizzard didn’t profit from player deaths. AN/NCSoft does.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
The Nagging Fear that in endgame there wont really be a renewable game play based source of gold income, forcing me to buy gold through jewels
This right there is the source of most of the game’s shortcomings. Unfortunately it sort of comes with the business model of Pay2Win.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
AN/NCSoft doesn’t want you to farm anything so that you’re more likely to spend actual money buying gold and other stuff from their cash shop.
Same reason why Explorables are impossibly hard. More gold sinks means more profits for AN/NCSoft.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
No, he means profession.
Classes are called professions! Quests are called Hearts! Public Quests/Rifts are called Dynamic Events! Battlegrounds are called Scenarios! RvR is called WvW! Buffs are called Boons! Debuffs are called Conditions! Professions are called who the juvenile domesticated cat knows!
My god this game is revolutionary.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman.
Besides, these systems also discourage what many people have been yelling that they want anyway: grinding. If you don’t grind, these systems by definition won’t affect you (some are implying the dungeon DR system is buggy right now, but that’s another kettle of fish).
As a Necro, my basic set of Exotic gear (Rabid) cannot be crafted. Thus I am forced to farm ~170k Karma for 4 pieces of armor, pay another ~20g for the missing 2 armor pieces, yet another ~15g for my weapons and I still won’t have anything for my trinket slots, since Rabid trinket gear is only available in green quality at LvL 80.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
I just want my basic Exotic set of gear since Rabid gear isn’t craftable.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
As a Necro I’m forced to do the PvE grind because the type of gear I need is not available through crafting or WvW.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Max stat gear is very easy to get and requires no grind. That’s a fact. You do not need to do dungeons to get max level gear. There was no promise broken.
Please tell me where I can get Rabid (Condition Damage > Toughness = Precision) Exotic LvL 80 gear without setting foot in an Explorable dungeon, buying expensive random drops for 10g a piece or farming 170k Karma.
Thank you.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Well, it’s a bit like those crappy old NES games that only had 3 or 4 levels. Those levels had to be made impossibly hard to make them last longer.
But yes, the gem greed is very obvious. The bank is ridiculously small, your inventory is always cluttered with random crap, there are hefty gold sinks everywhere… all of which can be alleviated by buying an absurd amount of gems. Encouraging players to invest more money in your game by annoying the hell out of them is not a smart design choice, either.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
We made this game, we love it, and now we must do everything in our power to protect it from the players.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Here’s the trick:
Get one guy to aggro the swords and keep them inside Rozgar’s cave, dodging and healing. The rest of the group pulls Rozgar outside and a bit down the hill.
= SUCCESS!
Suddenly, perma ban for exploiting.
:p

Necro crushes Ranger in AoE damage and control.
Nope, Necro is only useful for applying Weakness and Blind using Plague and Enfeebling Blood. Damage-wise it’s mathematically impossible to come even remotely close to Rangers, both single target and AoE.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Talk about rose-tinted glasses.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
We currently excel in nothing. Anything you want done, there’s a profession that can do it better than the Necro. I’ve heard that AN said they were going to buff the Necro after they overnerfed it with BWE2, but John Peters seems to think it’s just the Necro players who are miraculously all bad.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Nope. Guess I’ll have to quote him directly if you’re going to play that game.
Keep in mind that some professions are harder to master than others. I believe Necro is the hardest, opinions may vary, but just keep this in mind. No we arent ignoring Necro, but once people start mastering DS, I’m afraid of how strong Necro will be. Give it some time for the average player to learn these things. For example early on in LOL master yi was dominant until people learned how to counter him.
as well as
What I would like to try and do is increase build diversity without increasing effectiveness because I don’t believe we have really seen what strong Necromancers can do yet.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Engineer is great for WvW since you can spam endless high damage AoE with a couple of debuffs at 1500 range using grenades, as well as strong support if needed.
Ranger is also very strong (insane single target damage using either bow at 1200 or 1500 range as well as great AoE using Longbow 5 (Barrage), especially if you combine it with your Zephyr (Quickness) utility). Plus, you can actually control your pets on a Ranger and some nice support (Condition Removal, buff spirits).
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Meh, nothing Peters’ said it inaccurate. He agrees that we need more build diversity and bug fixes, which are the two biggest issues at the moment.
He essentially said “l2play”; supposedly the players aren’t using DS properly and he’s afraid of what powerhouses Necromancers will become once they do. Which is juvenile domesticated cat.
The only proper response is “l2design”.
— ASP, “Tiefenrausch”
Judging from Jon Peters’ replies AN might hate the Necromancer as much as Blizzard hates the Druid.
If you haven’t invested too much time or gold in your Necromancer, rerolling is likely a good decision.

It’s the same deal with the “Knight” set, SPvP has Vitality, PvE has Toughness. No idea why.
I’d just really like to know if this is intentional or just a major oversight that’s going to get fixed in the near future. I tried asking on Reddit as well, but the fanbois downvote it into oblivion because they think I’m criticizing their favourite game and perceive that as a personal insult.
I’m glad to see you understand the issue I’m describing.

Premise: As a Necromancer, you want Rabid (Condition Damage > Precision = Toughness) Exotic gear. If you disagree with this, this thread is not for you.
- You cannot craft this gear.
- The only two farmable Explorables do not offer this gear.
- WvW does not offer this gear.
- There is literally no gear for your trinket slots beyond green quality whatsoever.
- There are 4 armor pieces you can buy for Karma. But not more.
- There is a sceptre you can build in the Mystic Forge or buy for ~6g.
- There is a drop staff you can buy for ~6g.
- There is a drop dagger you can buy for 10-15g.
- There is a set of 6 drop armor pieces you can buy for 8-15g a piece.
What’s up with that? Why can virtually every other class do a bit of farming while leveling up, salvage a couple of Ectoplasms and get Exotic gear for almost nothing, when Necromancers have to spent weeks to months of farming an absurd amount of gold or running the Explorables that no one else wants to run because they take hours to finish, if they are doable at all?
