List of methods to earn traits

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Fhi.1840

Fhi.1840

Here’s one that’s sorted by zones, toward the bottom:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Trait_guide

I’m a map completionist, so I find this one helpful as I can check the table and complete the zones that has trait hunting in them.

By the way, just fyi, all classes do the same things to unlock traits. Any class can go to Obsidian Sanctum and finish the jumping puzzle to unlock a trait (differs with each class, of course). Any class can kill the Foulbear Chieftain to unlock a trait, etc.

Help: Class choice

Warriors are no different. If you don’t have a GS or axe/mace, you’ll get laughed out too.

That said, it really only happens with pugs or speed runs. Find yourself a guild who isn’t interested in speed runs (for speed runs — maybe even high fractals, it’s unfair to everyone else if you don’t play the best/most efficient/optimum build and weapons), and just play what you like. If you find staff necro fun, play that. If you like longbow ranger, go run around with a longbow.

There are many things to do in the game that don’t require a great or max dps build. Play those instead. Find like-minded people.

Finally 80!

Posted by: Fhi.1840

Fhi.1840

Not like it should matter, but after more than a year, I have my first 80!

I haven’t even finished all the 15-25 zones yet (doing map completion). I kept getting sidetracked. All the “other things” that /map and /guild keeps talking about, half the time I have no idea what they are. I should start looking into these other things… map completion can get a bit repetitive. I hate not having a clue though.

Right now I play with a friend whom I introduced to the game, who’s a zoomer — goes from heart to heart and event to event, and sometimes wonders about not getting credit because he ESCs his way through the hearts and doesn’t realize what he’s supposed to do. That’s just how he plays, though. He’s enjoying himself very much otherwise.

Funny story that reminds me why it’s different from other MMOs. Yesterday I was in Diessa Plateau and was trying to get the vista at the very top of the tower. Friend says it’s impossible to get there (“let me know when you find a way please and thank you!”), so he went off to another shiny, while I thought it was a jump puzzle. The charr at the base of the tower says something about flying cows to the southeast. So I went southeast.

Came upon the cattlepult, which I thought was hilarious. So I stuck around, and suddenly, an event! We almost failed the event because I was too busy laughing at the cows being launched out of the catapult, so most of them got killed. If it wasn’t for my zoomer friend, we probably would have failed the event and got too many cows killed by harpies.

Event ended, friend zoomed off to another shiny, while I stuck around since I know there’s going to be a chain. There always is.

Except not this time. This time though, it was a funny dialogue between the catapult guy and his assistant. The assistant went off to find more cows, but in the meantime we’ve got a few cows left and might as well make use of them. So what does he do? He invites me to wager to see how far the cows will fly this time. I made 50 silver (guessed one right)! No event, no nothing. It was just something I saw because I stuck around. Hilarious!

Next up on my list are the activities from the crier in Lion’s Arch. Only ever tried Keg Brawl, which was equally funny, though frustrating when I meet that one opposing player who can toss the keg all across the field in one try.

Opinion on leveling weapons

in Warrior

Posted by: Fhi.1840

Fhi.1840

Hi all!

I am new to the game, and have a level 50 warrior. I’d like to hear some opinions on leveling weapons that worked for you. Before that though, there are a few things I want to point out, firstly to anticipate common responses (“just GS your way to 80”) and secondly to show that I’ve done my homework and not merely asking someone to play the game for me.

I know that:
1) I can choose never to use anything other than GS, but I like variety.
2) Axe OH does less than auto attack unless 5+ mobs.
3) Axe/mace is a very potent combination.
4) Dodging wisely and playing tactically trumps gear, stats and weapon choices.
5) Most of the endgame build assume some sort of basic skills, which sadly I’m still learning as I go. They also assume a level 80 trait distribution, e.g don’t use F1 because 15% damage.

So far these are what I have tried out and rather enjoyed:
1) Greatsword. I love two-handed swords in any RPG I play. I use this when I’m up against veterans and above, where I find that the faster I kill, the more survivable I am. However, in solo leveling, lots of the time 100b doesn’t get fully channeled (either dead long before, or moved out of range). It gets “boring” after awhile.

2) Axe/mace. I like this as many 80 builds use this, but it lacks mobility. I also love the animation and sound of F1.

3) Sword MH. Leap is awesome.

4) Axe OH. #5 is the flashiest ability I’ve seen for warriors. I love it. I pair Sword MH with Axe OH for dynamic events where tagging mobs is more important.

5) Mace MH. Control is sort of nice for veterans, and there’s a nice-ish block too. I may pair this with shield for particularly hard mobs (although with champions it’s probably not worth it at all). This setup is good for learning the basics of active defense in GW2, something I’m still particularly bad at.

6) Longbow. Not a big fan, but I keep one if I really need ranged.

My traits are everywhere because I can’t decide which weapon sets are good for which situation — not that it matters now because I only have 4 points. I’d like opinions on which weapon set should make up the bulk of my leveling.

Character Naming

And if people in real life did have their name displayed all the time you’d quickly realise that ridiculous names are not restricted to fictional characters.

My old job involved teaching groups of school children, typically around the age of 11 or 12 and some of the names they were stuck with were…kind of incredible. Like a girl whose first name is Princess Angel. In real life. Her friends called her Marie and I got the impression she was counting down the days until she could change it.

I dare say that your example is an extreme minority. Sure there are a lot of unfortunate names out there, whether chosen by parents or adopted by a clueless foreigner (i.e myself when I first moved), but downright dumb names are very rare.

I think OP is referring to dumb names. Tell me that a Tyrian parent would name their child Plantyhose. Or Bacon McOink. Or a thief named Check Yo Pockets.

Turn player names off. In the real world, people don’t walk around with nametags above their heads. You have to engage them in conversation, and then ask their name. I always turn off player names in any MMO.

Character Naming

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fhi.1840

Quoted for truth. My character names tend to be either actual names or more title-ish names, like “The Storyteller,” or “The Young Coward.” Those are nice since they get a sense of personality across while still feeling like an in-world nickname or reputation.

There are a lot of nonsense names, but trying to restrict that is a bit like trying to convince everyone to use complete grammar, or to stop jumping up and down on the apple cart. Player freedom 1, world immersion 0, and that’s probably for the best in this case.

Ah, the never ending debate on whether anyone cares about grammar.

I agree with you about the freedom to choose whatever name you (general you, not you specifically) like. Just understand too, that if I come across a nonsense name or lazy grammar, I will judge the player. It could be anything from declining their guild application, to passing them over for party invites. Freedom works both ways.

How does one get into this game

in Players Helping Players

Fhi.1840

I am not knocking this game, i’m just having a lot of trouble getting into it. I mean, its been ok fun to play, but there aren’t many days when i’m like “man i really want to play Gw2”

Idk why i’m finding it so hard to like this game, when i like nearly all mmos.

Help?

I know how you feel.

For me, I’ve determined that it’s the lack of clear goals in the game. When I first heard about the game middle of last year, I thought it had a great concept. No gear treadmill, level scaling (I like level scaling), quite a bit of voice acting, no power creep, active defense combat system? Sign me up! I was tired of grinding for gear only to have them be obsolete when the next patch hits.

However, I never got past level 40-ish.

At first I thought it was my mindset from other MMOs, that as long as I change that mindset, the game will magically become super fun for me. But it hasn’t. I still feel the same as I did after the initial shine wore off; I am running around aimlessly without a clear goal.

Sure, lots of people told me I’m doing it wrong, that I should not treat it like a checklist. “Turn off world completion markers!” they say. “Explore!” they say. I take it slow, but I want to feel like I’m working toward something, whether that be gear or something else. In Skyrim, I explore the whole map, but my goal was to find questlines to complete. There is no “gear” in Skyrim — I was using the same set from level 10 or so to the end, because it was a pretty set. In Diablo 3, as much as it is a gear grind, my goal was to be able to keep advancing in higher difficulties. These two are my most played non-MMOs.

In GW2, I haven’t found anything that is a goal. There is the personal story, but it’s gated behind levels. I can explore, but I don’t enjoy exploring for the sake of exploring. I can do that in real life road trips.

I wanted to like the game, but I think it is not the game for me. In the process, I discovered that I like some sort of hand-holding. Too free-form and I start to feel lost and frustrated at not having a goal to work toward.

I want to get into a guild though, I’ve been playing solo all this time (hur dur, solo in an MMO, u r doin it wrong). Perhaps a good guild is what I need.

Finding jumping puzzles

That’s kinda what I thought. I wish I can get rid of the questing mindset brought over from years of other MMOs though… .but that’s (a boring) topic for another thread.

I found two so far, by accident. The first was in Caledon Forest, and only because I saw 5 dead players on the ground. lol. That one was quite obvious.

The second one was in Metrica. I saw this strange portal-like thingy on a floating rock. Spent the next 10 minutes tracing the path with my eye, followed along the hill edges and found the entrance to a nicely-stacked pile of rock formation. That was a lot of fun. But knowing that I may be missing the others just makes me anal about it. lol.

Is there an easier, yet natural way to look for jumping puzzles? I am trying to get into an exploring mindset, but if I passed a jumping puzzle I doubt I’d recognize it. I know I can look up wikis and such, but I really prefer to find them on my own (and actually know if I find one… even a sign that says “Jumping Puzzle Ahead” is better!).

How does signet of Rage work?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Fhi.1840

Fhi.1840

You get 1 strike of adrenaline every 3 seconds while in combat. The passive only works when you are in combat, so you won’t be able to pool adrenaline before combat and open up with a full bar.

10 strikes of adrenaline = 1 bar, so 30 strikes to go from 0 to full. That means that in combat, assuming you don’t attack at all, it will take you 90 seconds to completely fill your adrenaline bar.

Coming back to gw2 Nord warrior help

Fhi.1840

Do you mean skill points or trait points? For skill points, you get a lot of those leveling up (and you continue to get those after you reach 80), so it is not a big deal if you messed up because eventually you’d have enough to take every single skill.

If you meant trait points, go to your trainer and ask them to reset it for you. You will have to pay a small amount of coin to do so. Each time you buy a manual (for adept at level 10, master at level 40 and grandmaster at level 60), reading it also resets the points.

What exactly counts as a "condition"?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Fhi.1840

Fhi.1840

In your case, it would be 4 conditions. A similar question to what it means if a skill “clears 3 conditions”. If I had 25 stacks of bleed, 4 stacks of burning and weakness, using that skill will clear ALL my conditions, since I have 3 different types of conditions.

Trying to decide on warrior weapons

in Players Helping Players

Fhi.1840

As much as you don’t want to i would suggest carrying various weapons with you. My warrior’s primarily used for PvE (mainly dungeons) but i do run around with a GS, LB, rifle, shield, axe, sword, mace, warhorn and hammer in my bag. It is really useful being able to switch weapons when the situation calls for it.

Thanks for the reply! I know I should keep different weapons, but I have a simple mind and I figured as long as I don’t pvp or do high level fractals, it won’t matter as much. I may keep the hammer and shield in my bag, I really like them both, but my choosing now is more of what traits I should build around.

Trying to decide on warrior weapons

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Fhi.1840

Fhi.1840

I was going to post this in the Warrior forums, but they seem very angsty and if you were to believe all the class board posts, every class is the worst class.

I still have trouble deciding which weapons I want to stick to (I’m not a fan of keeping many weapons in my bags). Currently my warrior is 40, so not too many traits yet. I only do open-world roaming, although I want to try out dungeons later. So something that works for open-world and dungeons. I’ve narrowed it down to the following:

Greatsword
+ Dat damage
+ Free evade
+ Mobility/Gap closer
- One-dimensional. I switched out from GS at 30 because I got really tired of pressing one button and muttering “please don’t move please don’t move” every time

Sword/Sword or Sword/Shield
+ Bleeding fits my character and I love love the legendary sword, which I may work towards.
+ Block
+ Gap-closer
+ I heard torment is good, and now sword #4 applies torment
- Condition builds still aren’t great

Hammer
+ Plain fun
+ Lots of CC for trash mobs, accidental overpulls and open world veterans
+ The only worthwhile burst skill to use
+ I like the toughness trait line
- No mobility
- Feels slow and sluggish, even after the buffs.
- CCs do nothing against champions and dungeon bosses.

I keep a longbow/rifle in my bag for when I need ranged, so I didn’t list them, but those are my choices. It’s hard to build a trait build until I have settled on two weapon sets. Right now I’m thinking GS/sword because they have overlapping trait lines, but I really like the toughness line (cleansing ire is nice + adrenal health for open world) – I feel naked not having toughness on a warrior.

I am not sure how I feel about adrenaline yet. I like using them, because I think it’s silly to ignore a core mechanic of a class. At the same time, only the hammer has a worthwhile burst ability.

Thoughts? I have cookies.

If you are not married to Tarnished Coast, you can just delete all your characters on that server (I’m assuming no one got to 80 in the one week since you all bought the game), that would allow everyone to choose a new home server to play together.

EDIT: Apparently I fail at reading. So you do have well developed characters. For what it’s worth, TC has not been full for more than a month now. It was only the last couple of days that it was Full. When I started the game early June, I ended up waiting 3-4 days to snag a spot on TC, but about a couple of weeks after that, no server was Full anymore.

What I’m saying is, there is a high chance that it’ll drop back down if you are patient enough. It seems to me they add capacity gradually – though I have nothing to back that up.

Seeking good Fhi-t guild (may transfer)

in Looking for...

Posted by: Fhi.1840

Fhi.1840

I am not looking for the perfect guild, since it is impossible, but a good fit guild is the next best thing.

I am an introvert. For many, this means shy/loner/anti-social. Far from it. Introvertness merely refers to how a person recharges his or her energy – energized by other people, or energized by solitude, time alone and self reflection.

I am an EST player. I am looking for a small guild, preferably 25+ year-olds. I relate to people of that age range best. In the 5 years that I have played World of Warcraft, I have only been in one actual guild. After I left that guild, I was content being in my own personal guild, and a list of friends that I have made from other guilds.

My introvertness means that I am perfectly happy with sometimes being the only one online, and sometimes having a few friends to talk to. Sometimes I want to just do my own things, and sometimes I want to participate in whatever it is people are doing. I don’t have a set schedule of when I play, as I don’t play video games as much as I used to. I just hop on when I need a break from life. I am not a talkative person, but engage me in something that I relate to, or have an interest in, and I can talk your ears off. People sometimes mistake that as aloofness.

In other words, as much as I enjoy being with people, I like being by myself sometimes, and a guild that doesn’t mind me not paying attention to guild chat all the time would be great.

I am looking beyond people to play with. I like friendships. Making 5 friends in a 5-member guild is more joyous to me than being able to see 15 people online any time but knowing nothing beyond their screen names.

I currently have a few friends from WoW who convinced me to play, although they rarely play themselves and I find most of the time I play alone. I have not done any dungeons or WvW at all, though I am excited about them. I only have a level 40 warrior in two months since I picked up the game. I will definitely consider a transfer for the right guild.

Even though I am on Tarnished Coast, I don’t roleplay (I love seeing RP out in the world though) openly, and all RP I do is in my head – like what build fits my character, what decisions they would make in their personal stories, their preferred weapons, etc.

That was long. If you made it this far, I’d like to speak with you!

Help me with a profession - with details!

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Fhi.1840

Fhi.1840

I know this topic gets asked all the time, but each case is unique, so here I am hoping someone can point me in a right direction.

I am new to GW2. I am mostly a melee person, mostly because it’s “straightforward” – get up to their faces and show them who is boss. But definitely open to trying others – GW2 so far has a very different style than your conventional melee/stealth/caster archetypes. My only character so far is a warrior, and I am enjoying him immensely. However, now I want to make another profession to co-main.

I am not an alt person, I have tried alting in many games, but I enjoy the game most when I focus on one or two characters at a time. I am a completionist, so alting usually ends up very repetitive for me. Hence this topic, since I can’t afford to level each one to 80 to pick.

I am mostly a solo player, so I’d like a profession that wouldn’t have a hard time out in the world alone. Most importantly, a profession (I keep wanting to type ‘class’) that has no problems versus skill challenge mobs and veterans, and can handle accidental overpulls. While a profession who can solo champions would be nice, they are much more fun when done with groups anyway.

I have tried a few classes, but never got past level 7 with each because they each just feels too squishy compared to my warrior. To be fair, I know I did not give any of them much of a chance to shine, but on the other hand, it felt pointless when I did not need to “wait” on my warrior to be effective out there.

So far, ruled out Guardians (looks like a defensive/support version of warrior), Ranger and Necromancer (do not like pets), but definitely open to having my mind changed.

TLDR: Would like a profession that is more engaged than a greatsword warrior (I refuse to do GS on my warrior), but not as complicated as pressing 20 buttons to kill a mob (elementalist?) – and be able to handle overpulls.
