I’d just make it an item with durability that gets repaired by the repairer.
I, and many others, also have a problem with this. Not to go into detail, but my right hand is damaged. I can use a mouse, but holding down RMB while using the mouse for an hour causes a lot of strain. Similar issues with people who have RSI (Carpal tunnel).
For now there is:

It’s a bit janky, but it’s helped my arm from not trying to kill me after a couple hours of playing.
Weapon specific traits greatly limit player choices when it comes to builds. Let’s take an easy example: Greatsword Guardian (Click on the traits button)
This is the base skeleton of the build. Not very many guardians who want to primarily use the greatsword will lack these traits. This means that you basically only get 20 points to put into traits instead of 70. This also means that if you see a guardian running at you with a greatsword, there’s a good chance that his Symbol of Wrath will deal extra damage and cause vulnerability. This means that the normal ‘Oh, symbols don’d do that much damage to me’ doesn’t make a big shock when you run through and get a few stacks of vulnerability.
Similar issues with Sword and Board Guardian, and even the Spirit Weapon Guardian suffers a similar fate!
These few traits greatly limit build customization!
For a moment, let’s take a look at the greatsword guardian again, but this time pretend that all of the weapon specific traits don’t exist. Now the only traits that directly compliment the greatsword specifically are the following traits:
Zeal: The minor traits all compliment the #2 skill, Symbol of Wrath, but that’s it. If you don’t care too much about that skill, this whole line can now be much more easily skipped. This is also not greatsword specific because there are symbols on other weapons.
Radiance: Blind Exposure compliments the #4 skill. Again, effects one skill. Much more of a ‘take it or leave it.’
Valor: Altruistic Healing will heal you every time a friend runs through your #2 skill, Symbol of Wrath. Again, this is if you want to go symbol heavy.
Honor: Writ of Exaltation, Writ of Persistence and Writ of the Merciful are all symbol specific. Again, if you don’t feel like leaning on the skill so much, you can skip these. Also, like the other symbol specific traits, most guardian weapons get symbols.
Virtues: Vengeful gives you a bonus for, again, Symbol of Wrath. BUT it also compliments leaping (#4) through a light field (#2, and various utilities).
As you can see, removing the obvious options now gives the greatsword wielding guarding more things to pick from. Plus, this gives room for utility + greatsword combo traits. For example, there are a bunch that do things when your enemy is on fire. Well there are utilities that grant a fire field to the guardian, and the #3 greatsword skill spits projectiles everywhere (causing a combo, causing things to set on fire). This is a specific trait combo that guardians choose to utilize, instead of a trait that just gives a flat bonus to everything they do.
So my suggestion is pretty much simple… remove weapon specific traits entirely, or put in so many that players have to chose which one. I think the former is a much better decision, because if you put in a lot of weapon specific ones, people will rarely use anything but.
The short version: Weapon specific traits reduce build customization dramatically. Game would have more options without them.
(Also, this isn’t guardian specific, it was just easier to pick one class to explain. This can easily be pointed out for any other class)
