I mean we don’t have any blocks, evades, vigor, or strong movement abilities. We have deathshroud. And now it’s been nerfed for no reason while being perfectly balanced. It’s not like anyone was complaining about necros being too hard to kill! That was all the active defence we had, and I’m really failing to see the reason for the giant nerf.
Up until a couple patches ago, if we chose to let our life force completely drain while in death shroud instead of saving any, it wouldn’t go on cooldown; we could get a little more from a skill or a kill and pop back in. That feature used to be the thing that kept us power necros in competition with warriors’ 5 second swap timers, thieves’ initiative. arcane/fresh air eles, engi kits and toolbelts, etc. It gave us range, damage, and sustain, and now we can’t keep up with the cooldown rotations and sustain of other classes, especially at high-level play. Hardly anyone played power necro besides as a lich form turret, but this feature is what made them viable and fun! Now they’re just weak.
The balance team has made mention of wanting necros to ‘sustain themselves through death shroud’ as a reason for not giving them strong escapes. But this nerf, though I’m guessing it seemed to whoever found it like a regular bug to fix (like the fgs and mesmer sword leap), severely lessens the necro’s ability to do so, and really lowers the skill ceiling of the power necro’s kit. Please, balance team, consider reintroducing this feature to the necro’s kit.
Your damage and CC is your defense if you’re running a glassy build. Otherwise spectral armor is your best defensive skill.
This. Out-dps people when you can. Apply weakness when you’re a little ways into your rotation. Keep using abilities, especially ones that give you life force for to soak damage up with in death shroud (though this is weaker now from the death shroud recharge nerf).

I’ve been having a great time with my build. It’s got great range, aoe, single-target, and sustain.
Just go 6/2/0/0/6 with axe/focus and dagger/dagger, and then well of suffering, blood is power, signet of the locust/spite, and golem for utilities. Your main dps is dagger autos, life blast, axe 2, focus 4, and your well. Everything else just helps you do damage.

1200 games on necro/mes/ranger combined. I’m an amazing power necro and pretty dang good at mes, ranger, and warrior. I have experience in teamwork from competitive Halo and 20-25 man outnumbered fighting in wvw.

For me, it just feels restrictive since I strafe and dodge a lot in this game, and I really don’t want to tap “1” each time I’m using the 1h sword.
Well you tap 2-5 just as much, if not more, than you tap 1. It sounds tiring but it’s really not.
For me the 1h sword is pure PvP weapon, in PvE dungeons and other content where you might get one shotted because you missed your dodge by 0.5 seconds because of that rooting is a no go. But in PvP the sword is excellent for staying up close and personal with your opponent .
I actually use the sword quite a bit in dungeons to squeeze out some extra dps. As long as you stay behind your target and watch out for aoe’s, you’ll be fine. And take advantage of sword 3 to reposition yourself and 2 to disengage, you’ll find it is quite viable.
