ArenaNet - Question on Population Data

Gator.7581

Do you currently post live population numbers for WvWvW?

For example:

Current Match-up: Server-1/Server-2/Server-3
Number of players currently in all WvWvW maps.
-from Server1:
-from Server2:
-from Server3:
Number of players currently in Borderland 1
-from Server1:
-from Server2:
-from Server3:
Number of players currently in Borderland 2
-from Server1:
-from Server2:
-from Server3:
Number of players currently in Borderland 3
-from Server1:
-from Server2:
-from Server3:

I have to believe you guys track those numbers because of how integral it is to the current lag issue you guys are trying to solve.

Why not post those numbers?

If you don’t want to post live data – how about averages over time – as a variable in a history report. It would be easy to show that information in a graph. Just post it up after the match is over, in order to keep it fair during the live event.

The reason I ask is that it would be great information to use for recruiting. At the moment, we just guess. But actual numbers would shine some much needed light on the matter. We could quickly identify where we need to fill in gaps and then either solicit current community members to step up or recruit new members to do the job. It would also help those of us with limited time to identify when the best time to log in would be, in order to help our server the most.

Thoughts?

Simple Solution to The Bloodlust Controversy.

in WvW

Gator.7581

Coverage disparity between servers means that most matchups will have one server that would dominate anyway, also get stat buffs by having 3-5 more scouts. Something that would not make a difference.

Bloodlust is not the fix for night capping and server stacking. It just makes both worse.

The stat boost, while controversial, is there to give the buff meaning in the context of the general WvW battle. Providing boosts like %WXP, etc. don’t have impact in fights against other sides, they are just a nice bonus for you. The stat boost and the points for finishing players mean that not only do you want to have the buff, but you don’t want your opponents to have it.

That’s all well and good, but these buffs will benefit those with more numbers, making the strong stronger. That’s the biggest issue with the stat buffs.

After a careful reevaluation of orbs of power we have decided to remove them from WvW in an upcoming build. As implemented, orbs tend to strengthen teams who are already winning and make it even more difficult for underdog teams to fight back.

There you have it.

(Link: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Orbs-will-be-removed-from-WvW-in-an-upcoming-build/first#post608170)

These are my biggest issues with this change. You have completely ignored one of the largest complaints which is that there is an imbalance in coverage and population – and now you add this change which does nothing but make the strong stronger. I’m not really sure how you can ignore the problem like this? Making it worse is actually proof positive that you’re not listening.

I will admit that the actual gameplay may make a significant difference in how I’m thinking; I will keep an open mind until I see it action. It may be that small teams of 10-15 may be able to keep this playable: they may be able to negate the whole “making the strong stronger” thing. If they are mobile, cooridinated, and dedicated to keeping the new capture points in flux, a small team (instead of a zerg) may make a difference. We’ll have to see.

And as for the unofficial GvG in this area – you guys may as well forget that happening. The whole point-for-stomp thing is enough of a factor that you couldn’t keep dedicated groups of PPT’ers from interrupting every skirmish you try to coordinate in that area. In other words – it would’t work for your GvG tournaments.

They need to just open up an SPvP type system where you can have up to 30 members of each team on a small, open map, one without capture points or structured goals of any kind. This should provide the play area you need in order to continue playing the game the way you like, which I wholeheartedly support. They already have the foundation for such an offering in the SPvP system – they need only expand on it a little.

We’re investigating the issue. It’s been mentioned several times—we simply don’t have the time or manpower to reply to every single post, so lack of a “red” response doesn’t mean that we don’t know about or aren’t looking at the bug.

I thought you guys lived on a mountain top, surrounded by a magical, swirling mist that infuses your cubicles with the magic of ‘anything is possible.’ I heard that it grants your developers the power to do the work of seven normal developers. I also heard it makes it so you never get sick, never have to sleep or eat, and grants you the ability to work seven times faster – so that time is never is an issue. That’s just what I heard though – it might not be true.

Not exactly…

We know we have a decreased playerbase that seems to have lost morale, weekends or during the week. Some of KN’s WvW guilds are very well aware that we need to stay up late hours of the night when we can to take a nice lead. Trust me, those of us NA guilds arent putting in this extra time for fun, we are very well aware of our servers’ situation. We lack coverage all around the clock, we just work hard and long hours when we can, becuase the Yaks and Mags outnumber us. Not neccasarily outmanned, but KN does seem to have a T4 playerbase performing like T2.

An example was lastnight in EB, both Yaks and Mags who were in EB know what im talking about lol.

Careful there my friend, you’re going to throw out an elbow or something patting your own back like that. My advice would be to get a lackey to do it for you instead. It’s much safer that way.

I kid, I kid – some of the best fights I’ve been in all week have been against you and your mates. Keep it up, it’s the only silver lining so far. In most cases, KN sees us coming and high-tales it the other way. As a result, I’ve gotten much better at chasing down other players. All’s well that ends well.

Look – I agree with you – and I loath myself for pointing this out – but the Flamethrower will damage them while they are in stealth or least still culled – I see the damage all the time. When I think a thief is about – I will spray the area continually, and I see the white damage numbers all the time while doing this. In about 8/10 times, it causes them to just give up and run off for easier prey. But yeah, they need to be nerfed. Frankly – if they take damage – it needs to knock them out of stealth – like every other game with that class archetype. Period!

Also, how come we don’t’ have a way to convert Karma to Laurels, or convert Badges to Laurels, there should be a conversion process in place, at least then I would have something to spend Badges and Karma on. Currently -both simply pile up in my inventory.

Edit: I just caught my own error – I do have things to spend Badges on, like siege, Orr Karma Gear, and WvW leveling gear – but what I really want is to be able to buy Ascended gear with them, because you, your big Uncle Fred and four trained Gorilla’s couldn’t get me to farm Fractals for it, nor wait 20+ days of mindless ‘check this off – check that off’ daily’s.’ Sorry – maybe I’m not as ‘right’ as I first thought. W3 has problems. I agree with the OP on most of his complaints, but I think the situation is even worse than he portrayed.

Here’s a few more problems I can’t ignore anymore.

1. Night-Capping is a problem – regardless of what the developers believe. I’m sure they keep hoping that things will settle themselves with regard to time frame coverage, but this is only happening on the top 4-5 servers – and even then – there are still mismatches.
2. The fact that the three borderland maps are identical is ridiculous. How this made it through to release amazes me.
3. Having no ability to form larger parties – as mentioned by the OP – is frustrating. Having a limit of 15-20 would encourage teams to operate at that size and would go some way towards discouraging Zergs. Zergs will be the death of this game in my opinion.
4. Stonemist is a problem that needs to be solved. Do you know why it doesn’t constantly change hands? Because not many people want to fight there, where the lag is so bad you can barely auto-attack. Forget trying to heal yourself or use any of your abilities – the lag is just too severe. If you cant fix the lag and the culling, then remove Stonemist as a must have objective. One of the main reasons people attack it now is to remove trebuchets that are harassing the surrounding towers. Once the trebuchets are removed – the advancing army retreats without even trying to enter the Lord’s Room – where the lag monster will eat you up.
5. The Laurel method of buying ascended gear takes too long if all you do is W3. Simply put, I’m not grinding for 30+ days in W3 in order to get ONE piece of gear. No thanks. I thought they said in the beginning that this was not going to be a grind-fest!

I could list more – but frankly – I’m starting to care less and less. I haven’t played in two days – and frankly – I don’t have any desire to do so at the moment. I have high hopes for Elder Scrolls Online. The fact that I’m even thinking about that proves to me that I’m losing interest. The problems, restrictions, and frustrations overwhelm any fun I have going player versus player – which is still pretty kitten good in this game. If you can find it among the forest of Zergs running around.

Why 24/7 wvw doesnt work in EU!

in WvW

Gator.7581

Personally – the best solutions to date, in my opinion, include the following:

1. A handicapping system – points related – based on the ‘current active population.’ See the post above by Besetment for a better explanation. (This one is riddled with problems – but theory crafting it may yield some results. Talking about it ‘out-loud’ in these forums is the best way to make it work, as you will have more minds thinking about a solution that works than you can pay and field in your home office Anet.)

2. “Personally, I would like to see a buff implemented at night for defending NPC’s. Something like “Night Watch” which buffs their damage/HP, increases the number of guards defending keeps, lets them use player created siege weapons, and lets them automatically repair gates/walls until supplies are emptied. That way you can help slow down enemy advances at night by setting up siege and supply during the day. This would also increase the difficultly for night guilds and actually give them a decent WvW experience.” –Indure

This is also a fantastic idea – but I think you have to remember that it works both ways. If you’re a North American Player, like me, then we are the Asian and Oceanic night-cappers. Does that make sense? Instead – use up to the minute population imbalances as the starting point. As one server’s population decreases AND the other server’s population increases – make the NPCs stronger and more numerous – by increments related to the size of the imbalance. This would make it easier and easier to defend – and harder and harder to make offensive moves as the imbalance progresses. You could even have the Yaks move faster for the lower population server(s). You could also have the NPCs perform functions such as repairing gates, without upgrading, or as part of an upgrade, either way works. Maybe a system by which only certain upgrades become available as your population decreases to abysmal numbers, a ‘last stand’ upgrade option. This one has some real possibilities I think. Then as they begin to rebalance – the buff to the NPC’s would diminish. I like it. That’s a very clever way to fix the problem in my opinion.

The saddest thing about this issue is that Anet will not admit it is an issue.

I give this thread about 5-10 hours before some unnamed moderator will close it, claiming it has already been discussed in various threads.

They don’t want you discuss anymore, moreover, they will stomp any discussion, no matter how constructive it is. Their official answer, GW2 is a global game. Period. End of story.

Go ahead Anet – ignore this thread too. IT IS A PROBLEM. Just because you say it isn’t doesn’t make it true. There are some kitten good suggestions here, and you should take them into consideration. They come on here and post about it because it frustrates them. That much frustration only comes around when someone cares about something, so don’t stomp this thread, leave it open, better yet, read it and then do something about it.

This whole set really irks me. I left WoW because I could not stand the idea of getting my gear up to par- yet again. Over and over and over – with each new X-Pac – the whole thing would start over again. Sometimes it would only be one or two items, sometimes a few more, and the worst was when the big ones hit, I’d have to completely start over again to be competitive. I really liked the idea that I could just buy my Exotics from the TP and then get into WvW and be as strong (potentially) as anyone else there. No grind, no fuss. That’s over I’m afraid – I’m just irritated. I wouldn’t mind if it was Karma or even Badges – but its not – it’s like their forcing me to go into their horrible dungeons. I don’t even want to start up on that. I hate this games dungeons – and it really doesn’t matter why- I don’t have fun in them, and unless my guild mates really need a 5th – I avoid them like the plague. I simply hate them.

I’m starting to think it’s time to move on from GW2. This – coupled with the lack of significant fixes for WvW – is going to be the reason why. They said they were going to be different – what they meant was that they were going to get to the same place as everyone else – just in a different way. I have high hopes for Elder Scrolls Online – because even it’s bad spots are no better than GW2 – I’ll leave on principle alone. But what does Anet care – they already have my money.

It’s also the kind of unnecessary chest thumping that happens when you take all the people on a game who demand nothing but victory and put them on the same server. Look at the appeal Kaineng had. “Transfer here and win in wvw forever”, was pretty much their marketing campaign. The audience that that marketing campaign is going to attract is the obnoxious, boasting kitten.

I say be glad Kaineng took those people off your server, and hope they stay in tier 2 away from us.

Great point. I agree 100%.

The more I think about it the more I like the idea of automatically strengthening the NPC’s as the population imbalance gets worse and worse.

From the perspective of the defender – or the sorry saps stuck with a low population because everyone else is asleep:

You would have a reason to stay with it – because you’d have a chance of at least making a difference. Maybe you can hold out long enough for the day crew to take over. This would be much different than it is now, where at some point, usually pretty early after the Zergs from the other side of the world start crushing empty keeps and towers, things just become hopeless – which results in everyone just logging off.

From the perspective of the Zergs, or the server with tons of people on, who are also probably bored out of their mind attacking walls and doors:

This scenario would offer a challenging experience where nothing is simply handed to you. It wouldn’t matter that there aren’t many people on, capturing objectives would now offer a better fight, more experience, more karma, more fun.

“Personally I dont think it’s that big of a deal. Points dont matter to me, it’s how much of a difference I make while Im online.

That being said, for people who do care about points I think there should be a population based point scale to prevent scores from getting out of hand. Oceanic guilds will still be making a difference just not the ridiculous kind they are atm.” –ncntbstndr.2478

This is actually an interesting idea – do you mean a handicapping system like in golf? If so – that’s brilliant in my opinion. It might not be needed for the higher tiers – but could certainly help to round out the middle and lower tiers – or any scenario that is obviously too skewed one way or the other. Nice!

“Personally, I would like to see a buff implemented at night for defending NPC’s. A buff alone wouldn’t be enough though – I also like your idea of more guards, doing more meaningful things, like repairing doors and walls. Maybe they could also place Arrow Carts on the walls, carefully of course, and other such usefull things. Maybe even make the Yaks faster and faster as the imbalance gets worse, so that the few keeps and towers that you do have get easier and easier to defend. This is really exciting to think about. I think it could really work. But you’d have to get Anet to admit there’s a problem, which so far, they have not.

Fixing WvW Oceanic Imbalance

Gator.7581

The Other Option: (Part 2)
(This is really a Zerg fix more than a Night-Capping fix, but it would help the night crews in the NA regions if they didn’t have to fight against overwhelming numbers. So in a way – it also works for for Night-Capping.)
Reduce and restrict populations for each map. In other words, reduce the occurance of a numerical advantage. Let each server fight on equal terms. The key to this working is to REDUCE the number of players allowed on any one map, relative to its size: if you currently have a maximum limit of 200 players per map, then reduce that to 100 or maybe even 75. (You may have to create new servers to accommodate smaller populations, and maybe this isn’t something you’re willing to do for fear of over diluting the total population, which diminishes the “MMO” aspect too much. I’m not sure, but it’s worth discussing.)
Why it’s good:
Doing this will improve each players experience exponentially. The load on the client machines, culling issues, night capping, and kittening and moaning in the forums will be all be reduced.
Why it’s bad:
Less people get to play. This is bad for Anet and bad for Guild Wars 2 fans. This is a simple truth and it cannot be ignored. For that reason alone, this is really not the answer. I mention it because it would actually help; however, the repercussions of reducing the population caps per map are not acceptable.
The Other – Other Option:
Make ‘Regional-Only’ servers available for play. Give your customers some options with regard to who they want to play with. Make a server that only allows North/South American Players, one that only allows Oceanic Players, and one that only allows European Players. Leave the other servers as they are, but give your customers options; customers always like options. This would allow you to keep claiming that GW2 is a “Global Game” but then also allow people to play against a player base that actually sleeps when they do, generally speaking. The gap between prime-times would close, and the problem would be solved. I’d bet dollars to donuts that if you did this, they would fill up to capacity immediately.
There is no down side to this one, it’s a no-brainer!

Fixing WvW Oceanic Imbalance

in WvW

Gator.7581

How to fix night capping: (Part 1)
The Hard Line:
Restrict players to realms relative to their region of origin. Pit North/South American players against other North/South American players to ensure that a proper night/day cycle ensues. In general, a few hours difference won’t matter. I’m saying this knowing full well what Anet thinks about it.
“Hey guys, this topic was discussed to death months ago. As we said before, Guild Wars 2 is a global game, and we are not going to impose restrictions on what times people can enjoy playing WvW. Remember, it’s always night somewhere.” – Mark Katzbach
This approach by Anet does not add anything useful to a problem that a lot of players feel needs to be fixed. If you want to ignore the problem, claiming it’s a “Global Game,” then fine, let it be ignored. You will continue to see large Asian (and sometimes Australian) Zergs roam the digital landscape, beating the virtual crap out of the walls and doors of keeps and towers while their owners try to catch up on some sleep.
The only players who will not object to this are those that enjoy the game because of how easy it is, not because they enjoy any real competition. That is my opinion of course, but I believe it’s just calling a spade a spade.
Why it’s good:
Having this restriction will ensure that night capping is reduced to a minimum. You can’t make it go away, because there will always be dedicated gamers who want to win and who will stay up for days on end making sure that happens. But, it WILL reduce the occurrences of large Oceanic Zergs dominating simply because their North and South American ‘enemies’ are asleep. Remember, the reverse of that is also true, though that doesn’t happen very often that I’m aware of.
This would also, in a very roundabout way, allow Anet to take the high road by encouraging those who might have problems with Video game addiction to give it a break. Sure, we’re playing a war simulation, but it is only a game after all.
Why it’s bad:
I have really enjoyed getting to know my fellow gamers around the world. I have made friends from Australia, New Zealand, The Philippines, Korea, and Great Britain, to name just a few. Bringing the larger community (as in the World Community) together in a common pastime can never be a bad thing. Who knows exactly who we’re playing with, maybe if we can get things like this to penetrate cultural boundaries, we could help the world get a little closer to peace. This is cheesy I know, but it doesn’t make it untrue. If we can have people from countries that don’t normally get along playing together, getting to know one another, then good things will follow. I know of cases in the online world, maybe not Guild Wars 2, where people from countries nearly at war with one another over political or religious reasons get along fine. Wouldn’t it be great if that could spill over into real life?
For these reasons alone, I wouldn’t change a thing with regard to regional restrictions. I would leave it as is! But, I have to be honest and list this as a possible solution, because frankly, it is a viable alternative, even if it’s not a desirable one.

I hope it stays like that to be honest. If 70 people per map increases performance, then good. If it also reduces the number of mindless Zergs roaming around, then that is also good.

I agree with Liquid (the above poster) that Anet is doing this on purpose to get people to move realms based on the frustration caused by long queues. They have stated that one way to fix the long queue problem is to move to a lower population server. Lets say that merely saying it wasn’t enough, so they moved on to more drastic action by decreasing population sizes to cause even longer queues. I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, if I had a two hour queue, I’d move.

Split Personality Post:

There are at least two voices in my head, and I thought I would share with you guys what they’re saying.

Oh no you don’t -Oh yes I will- Seriously, shut up -No, you can’t make me-

Okay, where was I?

The Adult: Great job out there Kaineng. You have some very talented players and guilds and you’re doing a fantastic job. Especially during NA Daytime. The fights are exciting and engaging. The back and forth nature of this battle has created a dynamic game environment that promotes conflict, which is just what I like to see in Open World PvP. I can see that we’re matched up pretty well in the NA Daytime, with many good battles. There are still the Zergs running around, which can be a little daunting, but overall, it’s been a ton of fun.

The Teenager: You guys suck! Seriously, the only reason you’re so far ahead (which really isn’t by that much) is because you have dirty, stinking, no-good night crappers, who must really enjoy beating their ugly faces against virtual doors, because that’s all they do. Your night-time crew has no honor, they skulk about in the night when we sleep and take all of our stuff. How in the world can they possible enjoy that? Why don’t you Zerg monsters stay up one night (during our Daytime) and come and fight us on equal terms. Cowards.

The Adult: You have to excuse the Teenager side of me, he doesn’t really think about the implications of what he’s saying. So, I apologize for him. I really do think you guys are a stand up server that deserves nothing but respect for doing such a good job.

In my experience camps when flipped always go to 100 supply no matter its state before flipping, so I don’t think it wastes supply.

This is completely incorrect.

However, you’re not understanding a simple thing. The Holy Ram is an item of reverence to all Maguuman invaders. Creating new temples and shrines inside enemy territory is a free ride to Ram Heaven as stated in The Holy Book of Maguuma.

Mine does as well. Strangely, I cannot find another instance of this happening to someone. Has there been any resolution? It’s quite bad, so much so that I can barely see where I’m going when the ‘bug’ is in full effect.

Just an aside here, and this can be applied to any game.

If you look around and find that your frustration level is so high that it impedes on your ability to have fun. STOP. Turn off the game, go watch your favorite Dexter episode or something. Don’t take it out on the people in chat or mumble. This is especially true if your leading. You lose your cool, and not only is your fun over, but anyone who was following you will quickly lose interest. You don’t like babysitting casual players, then you’re in the wrong game. It must be done every time, because in general, they won’t learn. And why should they. This is a GAME after all.

When I hear yelling, demeaning language, or a serious level of frustration in chat, I leave. I wonder how many others feel the same way.

How pugs feel when following a premade.

We need this “Warband” thing! A proper raid party is something that should have been in place for launch.

If we can’t have it, then can one of the developers explain why not? I would bet my favorite pair of underwear that this has been discussed. Tell us about it Anet…we’re all ears.

Here’s a scenario that will play out every night on every other tower: spending 100+ lives and ~15 pieces of (poorly placed) siege to take a tower with 8-10 defenders with your 30 man zerg. ONLY to lose it 5 mins later to 5 people because every single one of your zerg ran all the way across the map to take Ebay’s keep when you could have left a few people to start trebbing our last keep from that tower and saved an hour and uncounted lives… or at least held it with 1 man and an arrow cart which would have also cut off our only supply (at the time). And after finally taking our keep in an hour long battle, a repeat performance on that tower that you lost…

….

ah, there is one thing you don’t know about CD players. while we are playing WvW, we farm exp/karma as well. to farm exp/karma you have to capture. to capture something it must be at the hands of the enemy beforehand. so by leaving the tower unprotected, we kind of let you take it so that we can take it back from you and farm more exp/karma again….. ever notice green arrow on many CD players ?

we only protect strategic positions….

That’s what I would say if I did something stupid and someone else pointed it out. Just play it off like you meant to do it. ROFL

Survey: Cheesiest Behavior

First – pick the behavior or type of player that you find most cheesy, then tell us how cheesy you think it is.
Example Answer: 6-3 or 1-2

Rules:
*You have to choose from the list. If you want to add other behaviors that bug you, start your own topic.
*It would be best if you kept the comments short, so we can stuff as many votes in this topic as possible.
*No multiple answers, you have to pick that ONE behavior that you think is the cheesiest. The one where you go, “Man, that guy is a (edit) for doing that.”

Behaviors or player types to pick from:
1. Any player who gives it the ole’ alt-f4 before allowing their opponent to stake them.
2. Any group of players who place siege up at the JP entrances.
3. Any group of players who camp a spawn point. Try to ignore the fact that there are two alternate exits because you cant expect the ultra casual player to do anything other than run out of the front door and fight on the lawn.
4. Any group of players who simply run out of the front door and fight cheesy spawn campers on the front lawn instead of simply going around them and contributing the war efforts in a meaningful way.
5. Any player who runs a bot because they cant be bothered to actually level up their character or farm manually, thus taking up a spot in the roster that could be filled by a player who actually intends to play.
6. Thieves who think that sneaking up (in any form of prolonged stealth) on a low level players at half health and bashing their skulls in takes real skill.

Cheesy Scale:
1. A little Cheesy. 2. Cheesy 3. Very Cheesy

I’m pretty much at that point after this last patch. I had just made 80 and was very much looking forward to playing a class that was relevant and somewhat feared. Now, I’m in a tough spot. I am certainly not having fun with it. I don’t expect everyone to share my feelings about it, but the truth is that at the moment, there is too much wrong with it for me to enjoy it. I’ll try a bit more to adapt, but at the moment, I feel very insignificant. Nothing works like it did before and now I end up dieing far too quickly.

My worry is that some of this ‘just doesn’t feel right’ are just bugs, and due to the VERY SLOW REACTION and almost ZERO COMMENTS from the developers regarding any bug from any profession (especially just after a patch), they will let it sit for far too long before addressing it. Which leaves me out in the proverbial rain. If they would just say something about it, then I’d be more likely to sit tight and bide my time.

_Example:
“Yes Mesmer community, the reduced damage of the Berserker is working as intended.”
Or
“No, Mesmer community, the reduced damage is a result a bug. We are currently working on a fix.”
Or
“We are no longer letting the janitorial staff make decisions on game balance and will be spending a good deal of time trying to fix all the bugs we introduced in this last patch.”
Or
“We accidentally let the lead designer for the Thief team make changes to the Mesmer on this last patch. We are working diligently to correct all of the sabotage and should have some results for you before either hell freezes over or pigs fly.”

I just don’t want to be left in the dark. I feel like a mushroom here. Except, in this case, I’m not even being fed the manure.

Edit:
I stand corrected. It was mentioned as a bug by a Developer.

“Illusionary Berserker has not received a direct damage decrease. Instead, is seems that the damage reduction you (and I) are seeing is most likely associated this fix:
“Fixed a bug that caused many piercing, boomerang, and bouncing projectiles (those that hit more than 1 target) to continually increase in damage the more targets they hit.”
We are aware that this particular phantasm is now experiencing a significant drop in damage and are looking at getting it back to a more effective state.
Thanks for keeping the post civil and constructive!”

What is wrong with thieves in a nutshell

True – but I was sort of thinking that the 15-16K in 1.5 is followed up by another 3-5K over the next 3 seconds or so…

I agree though. I’m playing some alts through atm – so I’m a bit vulnerable to that kind of burst. Maybe its made me oversensitive…LOL. But yes, I agree.

What is wrong with thieves in a nutshell

@ Doomdesire – I take issue with the way you simply dismissed the OP. These things are problems, and if you don’t see that, then you either play a Thief, or you play a class that can take 15-16K damage in 1.5 seconds and not die. Sure, he may drop your health down quite a bit, but you’ll live; not ever seeing where the damage comes from is probably not a big deal to you. You back off and heal up or pop your quick heal, either way, it’s only a mere annoyance to you. To the rest of the people playing, it’s simply instant death from out of nowhere. I used to get upset about it, but at this point, the developers either think its peachy or don’t care; no real reason to get upset. I go back to my spawn point and run back to the fight and carry on. But don’t pretend it’s balanced or okay for this kind of thing.

You can have your opinion, but as for me, a perfectly rational person, none of those things are okay. And, it should always be about balance, maybe not always fairness, but ALWAYS about balance. I mean come on, let’s face it, some people are better than others at this sort of thing, and that might not be fair, but it’s a fact. As long as there is a balanced foundation from which everyone plays, then whatever each player does from that position should be all that makes the difference. In other words, it should be skill, not exploits and unfair advantages that determine the outcome. I would hate to play a class that has that unfair advantage. Wouldn’t you? I mean, otherwise, they would have a tendency to say that it was the unfair advantage and not player skill that won the battle; there would always be a cloud of uncertainty hanging over it. Better to just beat someone fair and square I say.

“You already lost and the only likely reason why you would complain about that is if you and your teammates massively outnumber him and he gets the kill while all your teammates are trying to revive you.”

You sound like you may believe it’s some sort of privilege to be able to steak your kill. I agree to a point. But let’s look at the “likely” scenario. The Thief, who really doesn’t fight, doesn’t really show any superior skill, skulks about in stealth, around the edges of the fight, looking for soft targets. He finds one, walks up behind him and mashes about 3 or 4 keys, the moves play out in about 1-2 seconds, and the ‘target’ is dead. The Thief stays in stealth, stakes his kill, and then removes himself from the battle to recover his cool-downs. Rinse and repeat. I don’t see this as requiring any great skill. This is why I don’t play a Thief. At the moment, in this game, it is (in my opinion) simply not balanced. Anyone can play that style. It takes guts to use the Thief in just about any other way, but some people like having things handed to them I guess. Maybe we should just get some folks to park their characters in the middle of a field and then go afk. Then you can just walk up and kill them by the dozens; frankly, it’d be about the same thing. However, that is just my opinion. ;-)

In relation to the Keep assault video here’s a screen shot I took at the wall breach we created.

The story: We breached Fort Aspenwood’s keep and swung around to hit that wall. We then noticed that Dragonbrand was taking down the south-east gate and so we tried to not draw attention to ourselves while racing to take the wall down before they got the inner gate down. However we ended up getting spotted and thus a fight broke out between our two forces. We decided to finish off the wall, the fight continuing to take place once it was down. We rushed in shortly after the screenshot was taken to get our stack away from the ballista they built and to try to beat them to the capture. We stacked on the Keep Lord and killed him while fending off Dragonbrand, and the video tells the rest of the story of what happened.

It was magnificent! EPIC! I was just glad to be a part of it.

Great video and screenie! Glad it was recorded. I was there, and I can see the evidence of it, but I still don’t believe it. O.O

Maguuma:

I have had a blast the last two nights. I would be remiss if I did not thank a few commanders for some brilliant battlefield maneuvering and inspiring leadership.

Night One: Thank you to Rebel Daughter. That ‘special’ attack we carried out was absolutely brilliant. It was well led and well executed, and above all, it worked.

Highlights: Mag on one side, tucked into a corner, pounding the wall with three catapults – all while being attacked by 20+ plus baddies of another group trying to break into the same castle. Breaking through that wall first, running to the Lord’s room and engaging the Castle Lord while fighting off 30+ insurgents as they followed us through the breach in the wall. Capping that castle and cleaning up the remaining enemy players one by one. And all this with only 8-10 of us! WOW!!! The discipline it took to pull that off was outstanding. We might not win the war, but we won that battle, of that, there is no question.

Night Two: Thank you to Panda. The speed with which we moved through Eternal Battlegrounds was both exhilarating and far more effective than I would have guessed. The lightening attacks kept the enemy off balance, and to them, I imagine it appeared as if we were everywhere at once. We responded to threats while at the same time remaining offensive in posture. We literally did not stop the whole time, moving from fight to fight. The skirmish lines we maintained while being vastly out-numbered was something that everyone who was there should be proud of.

Highlights: Me, being chased down by two enemy players, and living through the encounter. The duel started off on the bridge next to Durios, but was as fluid as the rest of the night. I ran, I fought, I hid, and in the end I escaped. That’s a win, because you see, I was on my level 21 Alt, a Mesmer. At one point, when it was clear I could not kill both of them (one of them was down to about 30%) I evaded into the moat and swam for my life. I hid up in the pocket and waited for them to swim through and then pounced. I had both of them down to about half, and thought it might be time to go ahead and try to save myself. I blinded them both and sent off my last volley and then ran for it. You usually can’t catch a Mesmer when he or she really wants to get away (and the right skills are off cool-down).

These are only a couple of the really great moments of the last few nights. I would also like to thank the other commanders, and apologize if I forgot anyone or got any names wrong. I encourage you to encourage your Commanders, they don’t get paid to stay up three days strait to ensure that we hold our Garrison for 36+ hours; they do it for the fun. Thank them every chance you get. Your praise is the only payment they’ll get, so make it count.

Almost Every Single Dungeon is Poorly Designed

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Gator.7581

Gator.7581

I would really love to hear from the people who designed all this. What was the thinking behind it? I realize that I will have to change my builds sometimes, and that’s okay with me, but did they really mean for us to fight – die – run back – fight die – run back, etc, ad nauseam. If they could at least address this and tell us what they were thinking, or aiming for, it might shed some light on whole thing.

Having said that, I simply don’t enjoy the dungeons. In part, I miss the holy triad of Tank/DPS/Healer. Now, that may be just me coming from that ‘other’ mmorpg, and I can accept that I will have to change and adapt to this new game, which I love. Reading these types of forum posts is part of that process, and I’m willing to put the time in, in order to reap the reward, which is (I hope) ‘fun.’

In this game, I’m not ever sure what my role is. This is regardless of which toon I’m running. However, I do admit that it may be due to my past experiences with other games, where I knew my role. It’s just that, well, I can’t figure out what the hell is going on half the time. It all seems to be…messy.

Are there changes coming down the pipeline? Are the developers addressing the learning curve? I want to hear what they are saying about these issues. Does anyone have any good recommendations as to where I might look to find that sort of information? I don’t want to have to scour the forums and other websites just to be able to have fun in a dungeon.

At the moment, all I do is WvWvW, and I have a lot to say about that too, but that’s another thing altogether isn’t it. The one thing I will say is that I have FUN in WvWvW, which is why I do it. I do NOT have fun running dungeons in GW2, and I miss it. I used to love dungeon crawling, and I would love to just take my favorite character and throw him into some of the dungeons in that ‘other’ game. Why? Because you can say a lot about that ‘other’ game, but you cannot deny that the dungeons (for the most part) were pure genius, and tons of fun as well. My fervent hope, is that GW2 will rise up to be that good, at least in my eyes. For the moment, I’m not going anywhere, and I will continue to try and figure out how to have fun in these dungeons. I hope I don’t have to wait too long.
