It’s all down to -

1. Shatter is low range AOE and half the time the illusions fail to blow up from dieing
2. The damage takes 10ish seconds to ramp up to full with 3 phantasms out, and one random cleave or AOE and you lost x/3 of your DPS.
3. Mobs don’t use abilities like players, so confusion is great in pvp, bad in pve
4. Our largest DPS weapon option is melee, but our best builds don’t have toughness or vitality
5. Our Illusions rarely affect objects

All added up = less obvious DPS than any other class.

Can you get close working your butt off? Sure.

Can you even shine in full exotics, compared to others not in full exotics? Well ya, anyone does.

We aren’t going to be buffed much or where we shine (pvp) will cause issues. My solution for all of this?

Mesmer for WVWVW and SPVP and TPVP.
Guardian/Elementalist for Dungeons.
Warrior/Engineer for typical Event Farming.

Level up multiple 80’s and take the best one for each task. Yes, even those are good for some stuff and bad for others, like the Guardian is BORING in WVWVW.

People sitting for 20 minutes in CoE path 1 waiting for all the trash to despawn.

Do/did people really do this?! Seriously P1 takes like 15 to 20 minutes tops for my group to finish and we kill everything.

I’d REALLY like to see this. 3 minutes on each alpha fight, perfect laser run, all 5 security locks at the same time, and Bjarl the Rampager never having Scales of Jormag, ever.

No really…I want a video…I’ll wait.

I’ll fraps our next run, it certainly wasn’t significantly longer than 20.

Whoo! If you pull this off, I’ll be in awe. Best of luck.

~16 minutes total. We did pretty poorly on laser and Jormag charged the NPC once or twice, it was our first attempt at a pseudo-speed run tho, hopefully next time will be much better.

4 Guardians and 1 Warrior do not make a good group to compare to any other set up. That is pretty much the perfect dungeon makeup. I am seriously impressed, at the same time I’d like to see you match that time if you had 1 of 5 different classes in the group. Other classes aren’t quite as survivable.

Path of least resistance, this will always happen, doesn’t matter how interesting the fight is, people will always avoid it if it is possible to avoid while obtaining maximum reward.

As far as I see it, there are only two viable options:

1. Give an incentive to clear trash (via unique skin drops or increased rewards).
2. Force the trash to be fought (via leashing mechanic or some gating mechanism).

As long as you can get away with not doing something while still being rewarded, people will always skip whatever they can. Interest/fun is often times not a factor.

Completely agree, once you give rewards for trash it will stop happening(as much)…

Make trash have a decent chance at dropping 1 token (like 1%) People will kill EVERYTHING then.

Do mesmers have enough AOE to reliably tag mobs in large-scale DE’s?

The shortbow spam (and caltrops for the matter) are limited by resources so they can’t spam those continuously prior to the mobs actually spamming like Engis can with their AOE.

Also, there are rumors that may or may not be true about damage thresholds required to improve loot drop rates, where caltrops would be insufficient.

There is a damage threshold to count getting loot at all, in a massive DE farm you are unlikely with GS4 and shatter to meet that very often before everything is dead. Hell, most of the time the Zerker doesn’t even appear because his target is dead before he fully forms to do his spin.

I take my Elem out and I have about 50% of the corpses glowing at the end of an event, I take my Mesmer out and I might get 1 in 20 or so corpses. Warrior is better than my Mesmer, but nothing like my Elementalist or my Guardian, don’t have a Ranger, Necro or Thief to do the Orr farming to comment on them. Engineers appear to be very close to keeping up with my Elem when I’m side by side with one. They actually may do better.

If you are lucky enough that you can pull out 2+ Warlocks or Duelists, you will do perfectly valid DPS on most bosses. (If properly spec’d, almost over the top DPS with the right build and 3 Duelists or 3 Warlocks) If Wardens would just move or could survive more than a stiff wind, you could do even more DPS.

If for any reason you can’t keep those guys alive, or you try some other combo, then your DPS will be much lower than another class that doesn’t have most of it’s damage tied up in Phantasms.

That’s the problem, in fights in dungeons the major fights include a lot of AOE damage, ground effects, excessive mob groups and lots of ways that phantasms are just not very viable. When that occurs, the Mesmer DPS does suck pretty badly.

No other class is so dependent on their pets to do competitive DPS, and in dungeons it’s just the most obvious that is a problem to others. Ranger Pets are tougher, have range and you can heal, Necro’s don’t even use a pet build (for good reason, its awful).

Shatter mechanic is unfun

Shatter does great if you trait into it.

Shatter doesn’t do much if you don’t.

Shatter is fun if you are designed around shattering, otherwise it’s pretty useless.

What would be great is if you could modify the shatter to do something else if you trait differently. Like turn shatters into mantras or the like if you trait into a build where you want to keep out your phantasms/clones. So Mind Wrack turns into a small DD, Cry a single stack of 3 confusions, etc, losing the benefit for multiple illusions at the same time not blowing up your current ones.

Mesmer is the worst AOE DPS class in the game. Others can stand toe to toe and spam AOE’s, range AOE’s or in general have multiple options with killing groups of mobs.

AOE Options -
1. Bounce attacks (not AOE’s, but are multi-target)
2. Berserker (can miss and do low damage and isn’t guaranteed, even on your primary target)
3. Chaos Storm (high recast timer now)
4. Warden (which can’t move from where it is cast)
5. Feedback (if they are ranged)
6. Refects from traits
7. Minor cone attacks (one major with Blurred Frenzy on sword)
8. Shatters (which have a really small effect area and miss more often than hit)
9. Traited confusion from glamours or death/shatter from Illusions

Doesn’t mean they can’t handle groups, just that they really suck at AOE damage when you try to compare them to any other class. I’m not saying they can’t perform ok if you are a really great player and understand agro, use skills like Decoy and the like to manage mob agro, but at the end of the day I can’t say the OP is wrong either (although he is going a little overboard).

Mesmers are the lowest front-loaded DPS, with the fewest AOE options of any class in the game. They can do some burst DPS, but then have timers to reset that way above any other class. They can do AOE, but compared to any other class it’s slow, harder to direct, or has huge recast timers.

In return they are one of the most difficult classes to kill directly, can use illusions to 1v1 some really tough mobs, is second in difficulty to lock down in wvwvw and pvp combat when they want to escape.

There are ton’s of locations where a Mesmer shines, but, in PVE, there are more where any other class would be more useful. Dungeons are where I really see this problem the most. The cleave and AOE damage of the trash mobs normally means that your illusions are popping like balloons in a needle factory. Shatter rarely works because they die while running to the target. Now, you get 3 warlocks or duelists in a semi-safe location on a champion or better boss that ignores them the DPS is respectable (if not really high). But, beyond that, any class would be better DPS than a Mesmer and runs are vastly quicker when I play another class. I’ve been on one run with 2 Mesmers in the group and that was one of the longest, most irritating runs ever.

But I also love my Mesmer just for what it does shine at. Surviving, weird and fun options, interesting play options, and I think I have maximized the DPS possibilities so my Dungeon performance is as good as is possible. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like options to do something like turn all my illusions into hexes or direct damage that wasn’t tied to their HP surviving while they run into combat.

Phantasmal Berserker needs nerfs.

Given this is the only AOE that a Mesmer can use beyond Chaos Storm to attack on walls and all other illusions are blocked from being created or are standing on the ground outside, doing nothing, I’d be surprised if this isn’t exactly how the skill is supposed to work.

1. It’s no worse (and less damage) than any AOE an Elementalist or Ranger can put up, more often. Most of the time I have to be standing at the wall to even get it to work as I can’t just choose a spot for it to land and hit like other AOE’s.

2. It’s not the only ability in game without LOS, and it’s been like this for a long time through several nerf bats. The other abilities you can’t stop too by just killing the illusion.

3. Without it the Mesmer is pointless on keep attacks, we have no large attacks for doors, we have only 1 AOE on a long timer. Mesmer’s really have the short stick on AOE options as our illusions don’t spawn in a location when attacking or defending a keep where we could use Shatter, beyond the clone from GS or the Berserker, all other clones spawn by the Mesmer and won’t go through walls or bypass LOS, so they stand still and do nothing.

4. Never killed anyone or anything I couldn’t have killed with normal AOE from my Elementalist, or my Ranger, or even my Engineer, unless they are ignoring the damage, most people I can target get smart fast and move just like for any other AOE, the smartest ones kill the Illusion. Because of targeting/culling in the game, you pull back from the wall you go poof and there goes the target for the next Illusion.

5. Yes, it can hit siege equipment. The problem isn’t that (as a lot other than a zerker hits those), it’s that you can’t repair siege equipment. I’m hoping that will be an option at some point so you can fix it over any nerfs.

Sorry, I’m really thinking the Berserker is Working as Intended. But I’m guessing people can want all the candy in the jar and will get it eventually if they keep saying it in a loud voice.
