You know this might even be worth it. Even <5% of the game leaving due to ascended gear (I’m guessing it’s more like 10%) is tens of thousands of players, so it might warrant the massive coding changes and the WvWvW splits and so on. Call them the “non-kitteny” servers.

Not adding a gear inspection would actually harm the game more at this point. Take my words with a bit of salt if you like since I already quit, but think about it:

Previously, unless I was in a party with all 80s, our guild would only accept one or two puggers because we knew that two terribly leveled/geared players would just make the dungeon intolerably boring and long. If there is going to be a larger and larger gear gap between players, people will completely retreat into their guilds and stop pugging altogether.

At the very least a gear score will keep people pugging rather than have them completely retreat into guilded groups. Guildless people with less gear can get into groups with slightly more powerful gear at the very least, which will be better than finding nobody.

At the end of the day, if you’re going the elitist WoW route, you gotta go all the way.

Guys, although I’m just as unhappy about this whole situation as you are (and haven’t played the game ever since the announcement), let’s not overreact and start dealing out awful reviews on amazon or metacritic. Let’s give ArenaNet a week or 2 to come up with a plan that can work for all parties involved… us, those interested in some kind of endgame progression, and NCSoft/Nexon. If, after that, they still haven’t responded and they still stick to their current plans of endgame content with gear requirements and gear grinding, then by all means go wild on the reviews.

Dude, it’s done. 212 pages, 10583 threads, 129038 views, heavily dominated by negative comments by a mile. If they aren’t going to response now, they will never. Aanet has already made their choice. This thread is a merge threads just to keep stuff clean in forum. They don’t care imo.

Pretty much this. If you’re talking at this point, it’s just to fight with some crazy white knight defenders of Anet who don’t know what they’re talking about. Which is amusing to do admittedly, so have at it if you guys like, though

Power creep doesn’t work when you only need one set of gear… You get ascended then you start running regular dungeons for the cosmetic gear… The same thing everyone has been doing since September when they already hit the gear ceiling. It doesn’t change anything. The game is still easy and short.

This definition means no MMO has a gear treadmill and is thus a worthless term. WoW doesn’t have a treadmill because it has a bunch of armor which once you’re done grinding for you don’t need higher stats.

Which is all kitten. This is a gear treadmill. The moment you add one gear tier you’re on the treadmill. They can HALT the treadmill, which would be insanely unlikely, but it has started.

You know What I would do if I was a dev company. I would never tell anyone any thing about future plans EVER!!!!!

If the second something small changed a bunch of people can roll around kicking a scream after playing 600 hours to get their money back. It’s too risky.

This is why game companies lock everything in the vault and don’t tell people what they are working on.

The ONLY thing you do is hurt the industry as a whole. It a HUGE risk for companies to build and try new things cause some times they don’t work and they still need to make a profit.

GW2 tried to be more then a WoW clone, For that at least they deserve 60 bucks.

Why the rage?
And it’s not small change. It’s a huge change. In game’s philosophy. They did try to be different than WoW-clones, for 2.5 months. The moment they started to turn their back on this ideology, that’s when people have started asking for refunds.

No rage,

I’m just saying you people are not fighting the man or improving anything. You are just making thing worse.

GW2 launched a game that tried to be different. Maybe it will work, Maybe it won’t.

But we got our monies worth for that. If you deiced the new changes are not to your liking, Stop playing, Stop spending money.

Then they see, Hey we made money with this idea, Then lost money with this idea.

The holy crap I want my money back because you tried something and want to test something new to see if can boost player count and the amount of to nothing usefull.

If I want to make a game that tries something new, Now I am at a huge risk.

1) My new risk might not work.
2) If I change to try and make it work, People can take the money back even though they played for 60 bucks.

You now what the people who right the checks to pay for games will say. Don’t do something new. Make a clone cause it’s easy profit.

1. that is why it’s called a risk
2. They never came out and said it wasn’t working. They just did it. Look at the cash shop. It’s a barren wasteland. It should be packed full of skins to sell. The first new dungeon they created went directly for a gear increase, they didn’t even try to see if new awsome skins would be just as desireable. It’s like they didnt even try to make thier model work. they just abandoned it.

Personally, i will never ask for a refund, but that is only because I care about the poor guy who works in the basement at anet, has three kids and a wife, and drives an old beat up volvo.

And I like wvw :p

Right and if too risky for companies to spend 200 million trying something new. They won’t.

They will just make CoD once a year and roll around in a huge pile of money. While companies that at least tried get crapped on.

Yeah basically for the consumer it’s best if companies make 2 flops and 1 massively good game. For the people actually making the games, it’s financially better to just make 3 “meh” games.

I think we should just get used to thinking “AAA game” = Boring crap (shiny crap!), move along.

As for BUY-4373 my first thoughts were it was just one of those phone things. But all I got out of it was BUY-HERE. Fitting but not very amusing for an easter egg. I was hoping for 7448 for fun, or 4653 if they wanted to make a statement.

What if the Manifesto is just wrong?

Greep.6394

Yes, I know that. Could you respond to my post though? I’m saying, who cares whether it was what they planned. I bought a game that was falsely advertised, hence I was pissed. I bought it with money I could have used elsewhere, and I am not rich. I do not care about their failed good intentions, they are a company and a business and I expect results and not lies.

I don’t know. I’m sorry; I don’t have a clear answer for you. I started the thread because I wanted to take a closer look at the manifesto, and what it means and whether it’s even realistic, rather than to express my indignation toward Ascended armor and everything it means.

If it matters at all, I do sympathize a lot with how you feel.

Well sure.. it’s just I’m still struggling to understand is why you care. It’s just a commercial. I don’t care about the details or special arguments of a hot dog commercial, but if it says it is made of beef and it’s not, then it’s a blatant lie. And if the commercial doesn’t affect me then I don’t make massive arguments about it. You don’t need to construct some grandiose philosophical argument when this has a simple solution.

Because I’m past the point of being angry about it and trying to figure out where things went wrong. That ANet implemented something into their game that’s blatantly and obviously contrary to the Manifesto is a given. We know that happened, and it’s been pointed out frequently.

But what I’m trying to ask is whether MMORPGs are basically defined by gear progression de facto. Just about every MMORPG has gear progression as part of their endgame and it’s almost expected by default. ANet’s manifesto said that gear progression doesn’t have to be a “thing.” It turns out that wasn’t the case, because now we have Ascended gear.

So my question is: Was the Manifesto unrealistic in the first place? Is gear progression just something we’ve come to expect from our MMOs? Hydro and a few other posters say “No, not necessarily, because we have a few examples of MMORPGs that either have no gear progression, or do it differently.” That’s a perfectly valid argument, but it leads me to wonder why so many games nonetheless opt for vertical gear progression, unless that’s become a trope of MMORPGs.

You’re asking me why I care about something that obviously doesn’t affect me. But this does affect me. I didn’t want to mention it in my original post, but a history of my recent posts shows that I’m pretty demonstrably upset about the Ascended gear. Also I happen to really love the MMORPG genre, so the question of vertical gear progression being essential to the genre is an important issue for me.

Ah, I see. Well, I think you’re acting under the false premise that all MMOs seem to need gear grind. You might be correct about all AAA high population persistant MMOs, and that is a bizarre phenomenon. This MMO was kinda the last hope that there might ever be an exception.

A suggestion regarding ascended gear

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Greep.6394

Greep.6394

Well yeah but I’m saying that’s a lot of work for one simple change, they can’t do this for every major issue the game comes under, it’s a bad precedent. They literally wouldn’t have the labor to afford it. You saw all the issues just to get one TP even working. And the WvW split has to do with the fact that less WvWvW servers competing in a section (you would have divided the number of possible matchups since isntead of, say 24 servers in the matchups it;d be 12 and 12) causes more imbalanced matchups.

So okay, maybe it’s not impossible, but this is not a simple matter of creating new servers with no more drops than exotic and just letting it be. You even have to make exceptions on who can transfer and what they can bring!

A suggestion regarding ascended gear

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Greep.6394

You would have to split the trading posts, disallow mail trades between the servers, maybe have different guesting rules, and different WvWvW matchups, further causing mismatches in WvWvW because there would be less servers in each area, etc etc. This is not as easy as it looks, and especially because of WvW and the tp is virtually impossible.

[Proposal] WvW Gear normalized like sPvP Gear

Greep.6394

As soon as more ascended gear is added to the game, it’ll also be available from WvW they said. Problem solved. Also, WvW was never meant to be completely balanced or fair. It’s just a large battlefield. It would be as unfair for people who don’t have the time to get an exotic set as is, but nobody complained about that so far. Only difference is that you can exotics in a variety of ways – which will be true for ascended too soon.

False premise: people complained. There have been so many complaints that exotic gear from dungeons about tripled in tokens and they’re account bound. And yes it is a problem for the reason I stated: the people who are actually interested in WvWvW are not going to be playing into this gear grind. And you need a LOT of people for successful WvW. Have fun playing an empty format.

@Greep

The point of my thread? I’m trying to figure out the underlying cause to all the outrage, with which I sympathize. People say they’re upset because ANet went back on their manifesto. I’m trying to advance a different idea: the manifesto was wrong because it never reflected the kind of game ANet made in the first place. The inclusion of Ascended gear is less shocking that way, and seems more inevitable, if that makes sense.

Also, I’m not saying that GW1 wasn’t successful. I played and loved GW1. I’m saying it wasn’t an MMO.

Why?

Not in the “Because ArenaNet said it isn’t one” meaning, but rather, what features does GW1 have, or what features is the game missing, that makes you claim it is not a MMO?

persistant world.

And a persistent world has literally nothing to do with gear grind, so this whole “GW1 was not an MMO” semantics insane argument has no bearing whatsoever without the reality of the discussion.

new dungeon is completely optional. spvp cant use pve gear. pretty sure the game isnt a gear grind.

AND same with GW1. It had completely optinoal dungeons, pvp didn’t use pve gear. So what does a persistent world and whether it was really a “true” MMO have anything to do with the manifesto being improbable? It worked in GW1, GW2 was designed around it, and they just lied. Boom.

And by your logic the entire game is optional. You’re just spouting nonsense words.

Many people who bought the game read the box or feature list.

Does anyone have the box art ?

I have been suggesting people check out their local consumer protection laws to see if there is anything that they can hit ANET with. Problem is I’m in New Zealand, so I doubt my local laws have any power over an internet purchase.

But if it’s on the boxes, then that means it becomes false advertising that my local authorities can take action on.

It also shows how Steam has affected my buying habits that I didn’t even think of checking a box, because I’ve been buying games online for years.

i hope this is a joke.

Different countries have different laws concerning these things so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s right in the country he lives in. In the US or most of Europe you’re SOL tho.

My biggest question to you is what’s the point?

Whatever their intentions were with the manifesto, they turned around and gave us something different almost immediately in an MMO’s time frame. I’m sorry, but this is not something a rational consumer is going to deal with. Maybe you have a lot of money to spend and don’t mind when you get a game that not just fails to deliver but actively lies and does so in such a way that you couldn’t have waited for later reviews to find out. But we might actually value our money.

Eveningstar they advertised a game and changed it within 2 and a half months to be the exact opposite. It’s really that simple.

Do we blame them for doing it? No. They’re a company. They make games to make money. But we will not play this kitteny game anymore It doesn’t matter who’s right or wrong, they falsely advertised we’re getting out, and if possible we’re getting a refund. Which conveniently they will not give to the earliest prepurchasers who bought into the manifesto.

Simple, fair, democratic.

I’m against Ascended gear enough to quit, but I have to speak out against this logic.

Games made by democratic action are notoriously the worst possible trash imaginable. As a programmer I’ve taken part in community developed games not just small projects but whole communities, and the end results make you want to puke.

Besides they know darned well they’re pissing off their current player base. They’re doing this for money. They’re hoping to attract and keep more people who would not otherwse play than lose people wh are so pissed off they will quit.

They know not many will quit, maybe a couple ten thousand, but most will silently accept it. That’s what they think anyways. And they’ll be right until it starts to sink in for people.

I heard of someone trying to get a refund and they were told they don’t have the ability to give for purchases 6 months or more ago. The game has not been released for 6 months.

So: Guys. Last chance to get a refund if you prepurchased. Or rather, for most of you it’s too late, but some of you still have a few moments left.

Do you have any more information on this? We purchased two copies here at home, and we have been debating whether to ask for a refund, but we pre-purchased on 29th April.

It has been a very kitteny week. This whole ANet’s betrayal (I’m sorry, I don’t have better word to describe how we feel) affair has just made it significantly worse

Sadly no, I just found it in a post in guru that had like 60 pages, but it was from a reputable poster so I’d believe it. Sounds like if you prepurchased in april you’d be screwed if it is true so it’s a bit of a moot point. If you do try, let us know.

Rollback is not going to happen, this was in the pipeline for some time now. It was a brilliant marketing scheme, I’ll give them that. I even think pre-purchase was started in April for the sole reason to avoid as much refunds as possible.

Im not so sure about this because its a PRE purchase… but the player can effectively use the product when its officially release. so the real countdown start at release, or 3 day before (25 august) for the prepurchasers.
So if its really a marketing move(i doubt it), its not so smart.

Actually not true in practice I think. I heard of someone trying to get a refund and they were told they don’t have the ability to give for purchases 6 months or more ago. The game has not been released for 6 months.

Here is my (CONSTRUCTIVE) feedback on this subject.————-

What boggles my mind is that the system Anet has put in place already has the perfect system to appease BOTH crowds. Infusion slots should add fractal dungeon (maybe future dungeons too) ONLY buffs. This allows PVE people to grind away until their hearts are content to get new PVE armor or rewards and get deeper into hard dungeons/raids/WHATEVER. Rewards could be

-Winning rewards/decorations/trophies for display in guild halls
-Rare armor/wep skins they can take into WVW (NOT MORE DMG OR STATS)
-Special taunts from completing hard mode dungones

What I cant fathom is how you guys dont understand that this game attracts alot of people who enjoy PVP that is skill based. Its not that we dont want to grind, its that we dont want to continuously grind over the years to enjoy pvp. higherstats will just make wvw harder to balance…. its already crazy enough, we dont need more damage…..

The people who left because there wasnt “enough to do” arent worth anyones time, do people stop playing Call of duty because “they played all the maps.” No, they keep playing because its a (mostly) balanced competitive game that puts people on a balanced system and lets them have FUN. you think any FPS/RTS would last if one guy got things other people didnt have?

What you’re missing is that the half they are trying to appease WANTS to piss of the other half. They want these items so they can feel better about themselves than people who have to work for a living or who have better things to do than play a video game all day every day.

If they can exclude other people because they have grinded for hours on end for something, it makes them feel better.

10,000 posts (not including those that were removed) on a single topic concerning the game (whether for or against) and we’ve had 2 posts from the devs.
1 which started the whole issue, and 1 over 3 days ago which clarified nothing.
Now the patch has been implemented, we have seen the issues first-hand and still nothing.

How much longer can they dig their heads in the sand and wish this would go away?

Granted, they do have their hands full with patch full of blocking bugs that is intended to entice new players.

i am pretty sure they have thier hands full just trying to get thier event working properly.

Programmers program, PR people do PR. The PR people aren’t going to get their event working properly

Okay here we go, it’ll take me a while to find the correlating exotic + jewel for this, but this has way way way way way more stats than the other than just +3, especially considering the stats shown at the bottom:

http://www.gw2db.com/items/71358-lunaria-circle-of-the-moon

Just to note those bottom stats only work in the dungeon. But the rest of it still is out of dungeon stats.

Is that accurate? What is your sorce for this info?

The bottom stats are the infusion which only works in the dungeon…

1. Thank you for not answering my question.
2. That is not the infusion, as it does not have agony resistance.

So… what makes you think infusions only function in the dungeon?

1: How did i not answer your question?
2: Granted at 2nd glance i dont see agony resistance but at the same time looking at the total stats up top in green there is no magic find, there is also no open infusion slot on that item which leaves me to beleave that might be an offensive infusion which in just the name leads me to the thought it might not actually have agony resistance.

Well its been stated that infusions work to counter the effects of dungeon. From that imo, its not fact, the infusion’s only work in agony dungeon’s. As i’ve yet to see proof to the contrary ill stay with that thought. Otherwise Ascended gear is even worse than what i initially thought. Yes i am actually against ascended gear btw.

These are not infusions. Go to the database and do a search on infusions (be sure to click item not skill), they all have agony resist.

All items in the database are raw, unupgraded things. I.e. no jewels on thew exotics, no infusions on the rings, no runes on the armor, etc.

Thing about the item database’s are they are notorious for having the wrong info on items.

Usually not substantially. We’re about to find out real soon, and the odds are very badly against us.

Well you guys who are still playing anyways.

Amen, you might actually get back half your leaving customers if you do this, including me.

You’re going to have to decide on one of two paths:

A) Make WvWvW incredibly casual to the point of being a joke, since pvpers will NOT gear grind every expansion or

B) Do what the OP says.

So, what’s the going bet on how soon we hear that they’ve got all their infusions and there’s nothing to do at end game?

2 weeks? 2 days?

More like the second the mats go on the tp, since they already faceroll farmed orr for eons.

why are people complaining ?

Okay here we go, it’ll take me a while to find the correlating exotic + jewel for this, but this has way way way way way more stats than the other than just +3, especially considering the stats shown at the bottom:

http://www.gw2db.com/items/71358-lunaria-circle-of-the-moon

Furthermore, you can just compare the database ascended items with exotic and see for yourself.

A new tier of gear (1 item) was released that adds a whopping 3 more stats to current best gear. Apparently this a low blow to the community.

Yeah isn’t it great how “50+ per piece totalling over +300” magically becomes “3” when you want it to suit your argument.

Seriously. Come on. You aren’t convincing anyone.

Everyone starts at 80, there is no leveling. Everyone gets access to the best gear immediatly, of every type. All zones are level 80. There is only end game crafting and you buy the right to craft from vendors. Progression is cosmetic based only.

Holy kitten that would be amazing, especially all zones being level 80.

I know! Rather sad that a minority of players are forcing a change which has ZERO other effect than to block content. That’s all stat progression, of any kind, does.

snip

First of all, you obviously didn’t read his post, there were two possibilities he gave, one of which was you being a PR, the other being the more obviously rational, that you didn’t read jack in this thread.

Second, nobody even cares about any of those other things you listed. It’s bad enough as is even if this is the last and final tier.

Third, use your darned logical faculties, you know this is not the last tier. They’ve said gear progression “is a process normally for expansions” meaning they plan on it for every single expansion from now. It’s obvious on a level of certainty that we don’t need to defend, and do not bother defending to you people since we’re leaving.

You obviously don’t care about putting up a proper argument, because you honestly don’t mind if there are more tiers. We do, and we’re showing it by uninstalling.

I just did three of these dungeons. didn’t finish one. I hate this garbage. Hate it with a passion. I can’t believe I am being forced to do this stuff that I loathe just to be competitive in wvwvw.

Please tell us when this will be available in wvwvw? If I have to do another dungeon I will shoot myself, seriously.

Oh it’ll be available in WvWvW alright… only reachable in massively more time than it takes to get in PvE just like exotics are now (half an hour of Orr grind vs hundreds of badges for a single piece lmao). Otherwise the Content locusts will complain the pvpers have an advantage. So enjoy spending tens of thousands of badges for a full set

Hey Anet? You need to do some damage control. You see, we feel betrayed. You said you were listening, and now we want to know what you plan on doing. At the very least we’d like to know your reasoning, and why you think we need to grind for stats instead of just skins.

Before you announced the new gear grind I was really excited for this game. I was making plans to play with friends this weekend. But it’s really difficult to motivate myself to play a game when some of the reasons I bought it are in limbo. And I’m far more moderate in my feeling than some of my guildmates.

Being honest would be 100 times worse for them. Do you really want to hear it? I can do it for you:

“We built up a massive marketing on the game to get our already excited players of GW1 to buy it and advertise for it. When then planned all along to betray them and just use this to our advantage to build a generic MMO. We released the ascended gear immediately at the time of this massive ‘bring some friends’ event so these new friends, who more than likely represent the regular MMO population that is so lucrative, will notice the game now has a gear treadmill so they can enjoy it. The amount of people lost by betraying our initial fans is overshadowed by tricking people into buying into a now generic MMO, which only generated interest in the first place by being nothing what it is now. Had it started out a generic MMO or not sullied Guild Wars 1’s name to kitten it, we would never have launched with so many players.”

See now that doesn’t look very satisfying. I don’t think it would sit well with people.

Many People: “I’ll give you money for a ‘Pirate’ Quaggan plushie.”

Result: No plushie

Many People: “I’ll NEVER give you money again if you institute a gear grind.”

Result: Gear grind

Conclusion: Shaka when the walls fell!

Say “buh-bye” to my wallet, ’cause it sure said “buh-bye” to you!

I don’t think you’ve learned the lesson. This means logically you should be saying “I will order a million copies of GW2 if it has an even bigger gear grind!”

Our Studio Design Director Chris Whiteside just posted this:

“I’d like to respond to concerns players have raised about ascended items. Please keep in mind that we’re releasing this as one portion of a massive November update that introduces and improves many aspects of challenge, progression, and rewards. With this and upcoming updates, we view ourselves as introducing large amounts of content with supporting systems and features, akin to an expansion pack, building on Guild Wars 2 through a series of live releases. So it’s important for us to be able to add an expansion pack’s worth of progression and rewards to support that content.

Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.

Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward. We are also working on other reward and progression systems for the game that tie into current and new content and features. As you know we care very much about your support and opinion and are listening intently to what you say.
Finally we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the upcoming content, and we will ensure we share our thoughts with you on the experiences we share in the Lost Shores."

Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director

Yup, it won’t be every 3 months, it’ll be every 4. Or more likely they’ll just lie and do it before than with an excuse. If you lie once and delete all the grind casual players put in for exotics they thought would last, no harm in lying again!

8% is not significant.

Power precision and crit dam stats compound on each other, so it will severely imbalance glass cannon builds since the game was balanced around those stats being at a set level.

lmfo. All this thread does is show that people dont’, can’t read.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/leah-rivera-on-the-new-fractals-of-the-mist-dungeon/

We don’t need to use the new gear to run the dungeon. If we run it over and over and over, it will get harder. After some point, it gets so hard that you need the new gear to offset how hard it gets. By that time, people would have gotton the drops they needed. When a group runs it, it will never run harder than that highest difficulty level of a player has successfullly attained.

This only affects people who grind. Everyone else can do all the same content many many times at increasing difficulty. I don’t see the problem.

I can read fine, but you can’t. You do know they said they’re bringing ascended to WvW right? That’s my and many other’s reasons for quitting now.

The stats are virtually the same as any other exotic. There is no measureable difference to be seen in game, maybe a few percent. So someones crit will hit for 1030 instead of 1000 for a player with exotics. Whoopee! lol.

And you fail at math as well! The stat increase is a full 8%, meaning a very significant difference.

It isn’t a gear grind. It’s just a twist to the game to make dungeons more exciting and add difficulty due to the “scaling to how you play” not the gear. The game STILL isn’t gear based, just skill based. . .

This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever

Umm ok. So let me translate. Hi, we think your stupid. Never mind that we lied.

Depressing isn’t it?

This worst part of this story, though, isn’t how this affects the players. We only lost a few times $60 and some cash on gems. There will be other games. Some might even do what Arenanet promised to do.

The real tragedy is for the developers. I guarantee that the core developers behind the GW2 concept hate this change as much as we do. They spent years and years of their lives building an epic game in line with their philosophy. Why the sudden change? Do you really think the hard working, forward-looking developers made this change? No. It was the business side of the game. Those developers are probably even more depressed than the player base.

I expect droves of developers will be leaving Arenanet soon, due to management forcing them to destroy the game they love. There was probably a dramatic behind the scenes fight, but in the end, you can’t fight the people who pay for your house and your family. Pay attention to where the original GW2 developer teams goes. Perhaps they will find a home with a business partner that doesn’t screw them.

That actually is sad
