Apparently everyone is taking my whining to mean I don’t know how to play my Mesmer…. Let’s get this straight people, I’m a straight up baller when it comes to Mesmering, I just apparently never learned how to use the one handed sword. (Typically I use Gsword and staff) Guess I’ll do some research on it, but it will never change the fact that I want some other option to melee besides the sword. Also, look up that Dimensional Anchor. It was amazing and I will pine for it until the day I stop playing GW2.
With pretty much every class in this game, the ranged skills do less damage than the melee. I can appreciate the usefulness of the blocks and evades for up close fights, but once you blow those, you’re still stuck in the same situation of “Oh, dang, I’m in melee range and my target is at full health…” I’d be willing to trade the damage mitigation for damage output, which is why my suggestion is to give us a new weapon type, not change the ones we have now.
I see you don’t play the mesmer very often. Either that, you are not very good.
A good mesmer goes toe to toe and can avoid getting hit for much longer than many other classes. Between blurred frenzy, distortion, block, weapon swaps and dodging, I can avoid damage like nobody’s business. Also, I have blink, decoy and veil on hand at all times, I ‘AM’ the epitome damage avoidance and superior damage all into one.
If I could only play her like that in PvP, people will cry about mesmers again…
I see you don’t read very often! Either that or you are not very good at it. You’re still missing the point… I’m not complaining that I can’t keep from getting hit. My issue is that the swords just don’t do enough damage. I can dodge about for days, but when it takes easily twice as long to kill something as other melee classes, I take issue. I’m asking for another melee weapon set that has a little less utility and more dps.
So… are you thinking, level a character to 80 and then switch what class they are? Cuz that’s just not going to happen.
Why is that?
Because if you want a level 80 character of a certain class, you need to level it from 1. Each class is a very different experience and ANet isn’t just going to let you trade in one for another. Plus it forces you to buy more character slots if you want to experience all 8 classes.

Early in my Sylvari thief’s story mode, when rescuing Tegwin (might have been Teguin? IDK) I chose to go with the Asura’s plan. During that story quest, you are given a weapon called the Dimensional Anchor. It is exactly what I want for melee on my Mesmer… The auto attack blinks you back and forth, there was a teleport charge, a knockback, and a whirlwind. Just give mesmsers the ability to use hammers, have these skills on it and make a couple of them spawn illusions.
Honestly swords just don’t do enough damage as it is right now… People use them sure, but when compared to other classes the dps is woefully behind. And as they’re the only option for melee on Mesmers, I ’d love to see something else to work with.
