I also used ideas from Taugrim’s guide, and adapted them a bit for myself.

I rest my left hand in the normal typing position, and use S-D-F for Left Strafe, Forward and Right Strafe.

My pinky uses A for Dodge and Z to Switch Weapons. I rarely move backwards, so I relegated the Move Backwards key to the bottom row (X, although C feels more natural).

Then I remapped the weapon and utility skills to other keys surrounding the home row: Q-Y, G-H, C-B. I use the number keys for targeting.

I left the F1-F4 keys as they were, but you might prefer remapping them to 1-4. Or remap F1-F4 to the bottom row, and place the utiliy skills on 1-5.

Some radical person wrote that he learned to center his left hand on the center of the keyboard, I think making his movement keys Y, G, H and J, and he remaps all the other skills around those.

Since you enjoy playing as a thief, I think you might enjoy a mesmer.

Like the thief, mesmers can not simply stand in one spot and swing away at an enemy. They need to dance around and time their moves carefully. It takes a bit of practice to figure out how to play a mesmer, and some people never do get the hang of it.

Mesmers are all about crowd control, misdirection, evasion. They are very popular in sPvP and WvW. Unfortunately, I do not know how they are in dungeons. A mesmer does need to avoid being surrounded by enemies.

Necromancers seem to be a love it or hate it profession. Bugs or no bugs, they are almost impossible to kill. The main reason many players dislike playing a necromancer is that necromancers tend to deal steady damage over time instead of high burst damage, although you can set up some condition tricks. It is especially satisfying to use the life draining skills and grow stronger as your enemy grows weaker.

I suspect playing a necromancer will feel much different than playing a thief.

there is really no love for turrets huh?

I used rocket turrets, healing turrets and a rifle in PvE.

The turrets can be used for the straight damage and healing they do, or for shifting aggro away from you and onto the turrets. The rifle can be used for the straight damage it does, or for trapping the enemy with the net and or blasting him backward.

If I timed things carefully, I could exert a great deal of control over an enemy’s movements, to defend the turret from his attacks until the rockets had done their work. Or I could have the enemy chase me, turn back to attack a turret, then chase me again, then attack the other turret, then chase me again, while I whittled away his health.

If I faced two or three enemies, I could isolate one with the knockback/net, distract the other two with a turret, then concentrate on killing the isolated one.

For any event that called for players to control a point while waves of monsters attacked our position, the rocket turrets and healing turrets could simply be planted in a good spot before the enemy attackers even reached our position.

In WvW, the healing turret is still popular for group support, and some people use flame turrets to burn enemies on the other side of fortress gates, I believe.

I can really only speak to a rifle/grenade Engineer.

Grenades are helpful for either defending or attacking walls and cliffs, and for driving enemies away from chokepoints like bridges, stairs, archways, and canyons.

Grenades are also useful in open battlefield areas, since they tend to herd enemy groups the way you want them to go, whether you are chasing enemies away from one or two friendlies who got isolated from the group, or warding off flanking attacks, or trying to herd all the enemies together into one clump.

Partly this herding ability is the result of the grenades’ conditions (blinding, bleeding, chilling, poisoning), but partly it is the psychological effect of explosions (and their circles on the ground) scaring players away.

If I want to attack one particular enemy, I can add in my rifle skills to stop the enemy with my net, or knock him (and me) backwards, or do great damage at melee range, or damage at long range.

Necros I only used a couple of times in WvW, but I think if you love the class, go ahead and play it. A class you love is a class you are likely to play well.

Since they are a less commonly used class in WvW, many of your enemies will be uncertain how to counter your class’ little tricks. Necros excel at surviving, which means they can stay and fight through an entire battle, instead of wasting time jogging back across the map after dying.

Not everyone enjoys playing support classes, and they say support players don’t win as much loot, but it can be very satisfying to know your boons and conditions are helping to turn the tide of battle.

If you don’t enjoy support, Necros still put out a lot of damage. Burst damage might be favored in small sPvP fights, but sustained damage in large groups definitely has its place in WvW.

If you do get downed, Life Leech is my favorite downed skill, and there’s a good chance Life Leech will put you on your feet again.

Is Joining Multiple Guilds an Accepted Feature by Guilds?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

1. I belong to one real guild, and one that consists only of selected representatives from our WvW allies.

2. My own guild is happy to allow members to join multiple guilds, although sometimes you wonder why a few members bothered to join, since they never seem to be representing us.

Since there is currently no way to form a custom chat channel, some allied guilds share members (or even create an artificial third guild) simply to allow their players to share the same guild chat when running together in WvW, dungeons, etc.

Honestly, I can understand a guild setting their policy either way.

Casual, social guilds have fewer problems with players belonging to more than one guild. But guilds that invest heavily in providing members with training, gold, gear, weapons, etc., to build highly organized WvW or sPvP teams might feel their guild members owe the guild their in-game time in return.

Thanks for the info on the Pump & Dump. Old EVE Online players are familiar with these sorts of tricks, but new GW2 players may not suspect that sort of manipulation to happen.

Should I feel bad about spending real mony on gems

The buffs are small and temporary ones, so I would not feel guilty about buying those.

My guildmates level up their cooking professions and give away their hundreds of cakes and pies, which also grant small and temporary buffs.

While running around in the game, I occasionally pick up Black Lion Keys and Black Lion Chests, and so win for free the same small and temporary buffs you might buy from the gem store.

If the gem store ever sells a magic sword that does twice as much damage as any sword one can find or make in the game, then you can feel guilty.

Color Scheme Designer 3 shows which colors are complementary when using a pair of colors, or three, or four:

Using the two together, you might be able to find some good dye combinations.

You might be interested in looking at the Guild Mag website, where they produce a huge list of GW2 links each week, in their “This Week in Guild Wars 2” column.

Many of their links are to written guides, articles and blog posts, and they separate those from their links to podcasts and videos.

If you have an open character slot, make a human Guardian, and keep the Norn Guardian, too. Play the human as long as it makes you happy. Switch back to the Norn if that makes you happy. If you don’t plan to make a large number of alts, you could keep using your Norn for crafting only, and play the human when adventuring.

“1. Have a ‘last on’ column so I can see when the last time my people were online.”

This is my current problem. Our guild has about 425 members and is still growing. We are starting to worry about what will happen when we get to the 500 member cap, if we can’t tell which of those members are inactive and can be kicked from our roster.

Our guild forum keeps track of members’ last forum activity, but many people seem to use one name for the forum username, another name for their GW2 account name, another name for their main character, another name for their voice chat username, and many insist you remember their real life name and call them that in chat.

We can ask them to post their account names in a guild forum thread once a month if they are still active, but some of them could never figure out how to find their account names to get the in-game guild invites in the first place. (We had to settle for knowing one character name they used.)

I recently started popping online at various times of day, and making lists of which of our 425 members were on at the moment, but somehow compiling an alphabetical list of every account name and checking that master list against the several daily visit lists has begun to lose its appeal.

Imagine if someone were to invent a computer program capable of keeping track of “last on” automatically.

Has Guild Wars 2 been worth your $60.00?

Yes.

So far, my $60 comes out to about 30 cents an hour for the entertainment, not counting the hours outside the game spent on guild activity, netsurfing for GW2 tips, podcasts and videocasts.

And the Halloween events are coming.

I just finished 5 and a half hours of WvW, and the scores are still close. Both opposing servers are pushing hard, and I’m spending all my loot on repair bills. Now the next shift is starting, and the map positions are changing. It’s an interesting contest so far.

Good luck to everybody. Except for whoever pushed me off that wall when I wasn’t looking behind me. Grrr.

Guild leaders who don’t wish to formally join Synergy Alliance are still welcome to contact Synergy’s leaders and get some basic communication going on server strategy.

I’ll also mention that Synergy has been good at allowing member guilds to decide for themselves how much independence to maintain within the alliance.

It was a tough, close fight on the opening weekend, and a fun challenge. I couldn’t tell who was going to win. Then, like usual, one server pulls ahead a bit and the more casual players take a morale hit and disappear.

I’m on Crystal Desert, and I don’t think the current score reflects how close the match really was before the morale tipping point.

I miss the days when my server’s opponents would stand in a convenient clump right underneath the boiling oil pot, hammering on the fortress gate while I dropped grenades on their heads. TC and DB were much more tricksy.

Mesmer Portals, one skill to rule them all

I would hate to see the mesmer portal surprise attacks disappear from the game altogether. However, I do think it is odd that most skills only affect 5 players, but the portal is an exception to the rule.

Apparently, 20 enemy players can jump through one portal, but if I throw a grenade at them, my grenade can hit only 5 of the enemy players. This seems an odd choice.

If a few mesmers need to work together to open a number of portals to launch the surprise attack, I’m fine with that. If one mesmer has to keep casting portals to move in 5 enemies at a time, I’m fine with that. That rewards clever teamplay, and adds some suspense and variety to sieges.

It should be a great place for WvW players to share strategies or coordinate their attacks against enemy servers. Or, players can use it to organize dungeon groups, server-wide holiday parties, etc.

Good luck.
