The Siege of Thorns continues. What day is it now? 4th? 5th? Don’t let up. They’re going to send a kitten out sooner or later..
That June 23rd trait patch drama will overshadow all this Price drama. Watch…
At least that’s what they’re hoping for.
This is whole fiasco is probably the SINGLE most disappointed thing I’ve seen from ANet.
You know as a GW1 player when GW2 was announced I was a total fanboi and never hesitated to jump on the GW2 bandwagon. However, if in the future GW3 is announced my first thought would be ‘maybe’.
ANet has changed a lot since it’s GW1 days.
The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”

And doesn’t it suck the very most, that it’s all going to go largely to waste or be received sourly by many of us who stuck by them for this ten years If they can’t just start talking to us and find resolution in a manner befitting.. Businesslike, where all parties, us and them, come away feeling slightly stung, but mostly not.
Yeah, this situation is flat out crap. What they’ve done is inexcusable.
I’ve supported Anet for a decade, and this is the first time I’ve actually decided that “No, you can’t have my money for what you’ve done, and you’re not ever getting any more of it unless you fix it.”
I haven’t agreed with every decision they’ve made. I’ve been extremely outspoken against some of them, and unhappy that they stuck to some of those. But overall, I’ve been satisfied. The things I’ve taken issue with, are aspects of the game I can simply avoid with little to no impact on my gameplay or enjoyment of the game.
But what has happened this week, I cannot get over and live with. They need to make up for their mistakes and deception before I consider them deserving of my support, and my money.

While I’m unhappy about the marketing surrounding HoT, I think peeps saying a lack of response from ANet for 3 days equates to ANet doesn’t care is, I think, a bit unrealistic.
Given Anet’s continuing inability to address issues from two years ago, are you really that surprised?
Yep. As I said, it took them 7 years to give us what they said would take 1-2. I’d say, check back in about, oh, a month, 3 perhaps.. A year? It certainly pays not to count with aNets clock…
When did they ever say it would be 1-2 years?
And GW2 didn’t take 7 years, it was 5. They announced it in spring 2007, which was the same time they began work on it. It was released just over 5 years later. And 5 years is a pretty normal time for MMO developement.
As unhappy as I am with the current situation, I’m not going to start spouting off totally inaccurate information to bash them. Use facts for that.
Ok you got me. I was mostly right. You were right about the announcement date, however, GW1 was released in 2005. We waited 7 years for GW2. There was, as I remember plenty of talk about a sequel before the official announcement.
My point still stand that you can’t expect miracles 3 years after release when it took 7 years from GW1 release to release GW2, on almost the exact same engine..
I think it’s obvious that GW2 is a pretty thorough overhaul of that old engine. There are a lot of things possible in it, that were not in GW1’s engine. Looking at other game engines, there is a lot of iteration of the same bases as they shift from v1 to v2, etc.
I think a good example would be Oblivion and Morrowind from the Elder Scrolls series. The games have quite different engines, even though both are the Gamebryo engine. They are just different iterations/versions of the same engine, with very different technical capabilities.
Back to Guild Wars 2.
HoT is still GW2, and isn’t bringing a new engine. There are, as Anet has pointed out already, some technical advancements made in the expansion’s content. But it is still running on the same game client. These are the same types of new tech that we’ve already seen added to to the core game since release. I’m sure anyone that played wvw back in 2012 remembers culling.

sighs all this for a game for the love of the gods above you all are taking this way too far
It doesn’t matter what it’s for. It’s a company offering a “deal” that (with no notice) does not apply to all customers, and lying about perquisites in order to sell more copies.
but legal action its a bit extreme for a bloody game your lifes are in no way affected by their shady tactics
They are taking (or at least asking for) money for this product. That makes it matter.
Imagine you’re shopping for a new mobile phone. You get a nice discount on an upgrade/contract re-sign for under $100. The saleperson tells you that you will also need to buy a $25 SIM card for the device, as they don’t include one. It’s still a good price, so you take it. The phone is ordered to be shipped to your home, but you leave the store with the SIM card for it. When the phone arrives, you find that it already has a SIM card ready to be activated.
You contact the phone provider and are informed that you cannot get a refund on your extra SIM card, but also have no ability to use it. They do offer to refund the full purchase of the phone/card bundle, but tell you that you need to buy a new phone a full retail value to make use of the service contract you just signed.
You’d likely be angry, and be willing to take some action against the company if they did not offer a more reasonable solution…right?
It’s no different with a game. It’s still our money, and they are still being dishonest in a shady/illegal attempt to get more of it.

Took 7 years to get GW2.
Everyone seems to forget that while they’re espousing just how much wonder they’ve obviously come up with in merely 3…I doubt they’ve been working on an expac for a full 3 years. It’s probably closer to a year, msybe a year and a half.
As of July 2013, there was no one working on any expansions for Guild Wars 2.

Is it even that?
They said they would launch the specializations when they had something to show. So far only a few have been presented and with doubts, possible changes to them.
Revenant only had a few trait lines, we only got to explore a piece of a map.
For a game that has been in development for “so long” it feels like everything is early work.

Day 4 of the Siege of Thorns eh..
Hi guys and dolls! Did I miss anything. A bunch of people telling us to lay off aNet, the poor buggers need the money and I’ll be giving them my money no matter what I say?
pretty much that, only the media is catching on
some staff members comment on the forums on topics totally unrelated to this (I’d guess they are forbidden to talk about this right now)
anyways don’t expect a statement soon; I remember when players were having massive lag issues it took about two weeks for them to say what’s going on
You know what’s funny? most people in comment section are defending Anet. Goes to show how mad GW2 community became. Sad to see but the problem is on community not Anet.
Yes this is completely the communities fault …
We all just woke up one day and thought “hey guys let’s get together and see if we can make a game we love(d) burn to the ground for no reason at all” “WHO’S WITH ME” !
Next you’ll be telling us that when a crime is committed it is always the victims fault because, maybe they didn’t run away fast enough …
Bla bla bla…
Short reply for so big defense: no.

If there is an exchange in order to receive a product it is not free. The core game is now part of the bundle you are paying for, thus it is not free. Why is it hard to understand ?
Is it because they told you it is free ? Ask them to give you a key code for the core game before you purchase HoT and then a separate key code for HoT when you drop the money. If they won’t give you a key code for nothing for the core game, I’m sorry to shatter your theory but it is not free. If it is part of a package that costs money then by definition it is not free.
If you go to a car dealership and they want 40k for a car and tell you they will throw in the engine for free are you really going to believe your not paying for that engine ?

A simple point people don’t seem to understand is that the core game inclusion isn’t influencing the price in any way… it’s just something they threw in so new players that missed the previous sales aren’t stuck behind a huge paywall. They just got lucky to get the game at a lower price than others(free of charge in this case) the same way people got it for 75% less during the recent sales but nobody raised any pitchforks then even though they should have, according to the logic the complaining follows. The expansion itself costs 50$, you’d be paying that regardless of core game inclusion. Nobody is forcing you to pay extra for something you already have. Think of it as a 100% discount product you don’t have to put in your basket separately.
As for the pricing itself, $40 to $50 is just standard pricing for MMO expansions. And saying there’s not enough content to justify the price isn’t valid because we don’t know how much content there actually is. Which is where the magic of pre-purchasing kicks in… you don’t have to buy it now if you don’t feel you know enough. Pre-purchasing is an optional gesture of faith from the consumers. The game didn’t release yet. Anet isn’t demanding that we pay for the game now and then releasing it in a week or two from now. The game is several months from being ready. In fact, Anet isn’t demanding anything and people are hatemongering for no real reason. The game isn’t going live with just the things that were revealed up until now, and I don’t know why people are acting like it is. There’s still months of reveals ahead of us. Just stop with the pointless, and frankly baseless anger and hatred. That is what they are telling you and your buying into it. They have people that crunch numbers, that is their job, you can sure as heck bet your butt that they took into account the value of the core game and added it to the price tag. It would be idiotic for them to not do this. It helps them justify the $50 price tag even if they tell you it doesn’t.
Like I have said before, if you buy a meal from McDonalds they may tell you the fries are basically free but in actuality they have taken into consideration the value of each part of that meal, right down to the paper wrap around the straw.
Apparently ignorance IS bliss. Don’t go into the light!
…..now Im craving for some fries >.<
Edit: but going back to Anets continued silence, do they really need to say anything at this point when they have their own army of youtubers running to their rescue? Dance puppets DANCE, muaahahahaha

Well yeah, they know it’s gonna happen. The community (yes, myself included, even if I stopped buying gems since then) let them get away with other HoT topics: ascended gear, fractal reset, shady gemstore items… isn’t it silly to complain again, despite knowing the outcome?
“Let them get away”?
Hardly.
Why do you think ArenaNet is this desperate? Why do you think they keep changing business model, from the Living World Season 1 to the completelly different Season 2 and then an expansion, despite how they had said earlier that they didn’t see the point of making an expansion when they could introduce everything through the Living World?
Why do you think key, high level employees like Chris Whiteside have left ArenaNet?
Take a look at how sharply GW2’s earnings have fallen. Even after receiving a booster when the expansion was announced, the game is still earning NCSoft less than a MMORPG released in 1998 and a MMORPG that has not even been released in Western territories yet.
The ship is sinking. HoT is a desperate gamble, and all those controversial decisions recently – making ascended gear even more powerful than exotic gear, this whole mess with HoT, and etc – clearly reek of despair. If HoT doesn’t sell very well, I wouldn’t hold my breath for a second expansion.
I really hope the content that hasnt been revelaed yet, like the “challenging group content”, is epic
It won’t be. If it were, they would have talked about it before starting the prepurchase. ArenaNet’s silence right now, when they want the most people to buy the game, is a sign that if they spoke more we would be even less inclined to buy HoT.

That’s something we don’t actually know is true.
It’s quite likely product bundling to make the product seem to have a higher value by including other products with it. Using that “value” to justify a higher price than it would otherwise cost on its own.
They can label it as a free gift all they want, but it’s clear by their multiple recent sales that they expected new customers to pay for their GW2 base game. Their word of it being “free” doesn’t mean much right now. This is the same company that had false information posted up on their HoT FAQ for 6 months as part of a marketing ploy to sell more core game copies.
If they wanted to do honest business and bundling, they would have announced 6 months ago that HoT would included a GW2 account. Instead we get a surprise bundle where everyone is asked to shell out more money for, while only a portion of those customers actually get the bundled extra product.

I haven’t posted on this topic today, but want to be doubly sure that I avoid the issue some people have with understanding that “silence is not acceptance”
If a new player gets 5 character slots, I want 5 character slots.
Heck, I’ll take 3.
They can have the 20-slot bag, bank tab, collections stack, and EVERYTHING ELSE free.
With all of the changes that are going / have gone into the game in even the last year; in some respects I feel like I preordered the pre-order gw2 3 years ago and have just been playing beta this whole time.
Additions are cool, LS, SAB, PvP maps, holidays, guild missions, new bosses, 2 maps, currencies, dailies, monthlies, log in rewards, achievement rewards, new achievements, rewards tracks, wardrobe, megaserver, lions arch x3(?), DR, fractals, ascended, skins, just about everything guild related,
Not cool, the total change of: skills, personal story, conditions, boons, gear, traits, mf, skill points, influence, glory, movement speed, gaining experience from items earned on other characters instead of… gaining experience on a character, monthlies, megaserver, lions arch x2, ascended
This is definitely not the game I bought 3 years ago! (in both a good and bad way)
Idk, long story short:
New players, your welcome for us testing, evaluating, and providing feedback for the game you’ll be playing.
Arenanet, it would be nice to be treated as an equal customer, by providing HoT key and the free/included core key separately, Or at very least 3 charslots / gem equivalent. You’re welcome for the QA, I’m sorry if it wasn’t great, and came off in many cases as complaining, but at least it was free (wait… actually you got paid).
The more I think about it, the more I realize, depending on how you look at it, either the core game was vastly incomplete/broken/wrong OR the current game is.
I’d love to provide better, more helpful feedback, but there is unfortunately no new information to respond to. Just saying hi! I’m still here, I still want HoT, but I still feel like I’m being treated unfairly.

To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.
One of the first things they teach us in economics is that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
If a restaurant offers lunch for free, then more than likely they’ve raised the price of their drinks. So even though Anet is offering the core game for free, it is more than likely that the price of the expansion was raised as a result.
Nice try.
Been trying to inform this uneducated lot about that phrase. Seriously, it seems to me that either ANet had a really stupid moment that lasted 5 months, or they think their player base are a bunch of idiots they can roll over and shake the money out of our pockets.
Also, other than the above stickied Answer, has there been any ANet activity on the forums, social pages, or youtube channel? Seem like they arent doing very good cc, and soon might find themselves in their own self induced down state. This is just, smh, laughably stupid on their part.

Cross-posting a relevant post from my server forum’s thread on the issue:
“The price point is not an issue for me. Therefore arguments focusing on “value per dollar” are not relevant.
For me, the big problem is that for a very long time ANET’s GW2 FAQ stated in plain language that you would need to already have the base game to play HoT. Throughout these many months ANET held several sales for their base game. Since the FAQ plainly stated you would need the base game to play HoT, many people purchased the game during these sales. Some, myself included, purchased a few copies of the game to give to RL friends, other new players liked what they saw of the expansion and decided to buy the base game for themselves.
That brings us to the present, where ANET has done an about-face and decided that HoT will include the base game. Following this announcement they quietly update their FAQ to say that HoT will include the base game, without acknowledging that the information in it was wrong. People almost immediately catch the change to the FAQ, and then you have this outcry. ANET’s initial response (their tone seems to have improved since) was to brush off our concerns with flippant comments about how “this will be the only version of HoT, FYI” (they really can’t be bothered to give enough time to our concerns to write out a full sentence in reply?), and the changes to the FAQ were just an “honest mistake.”
To make things worse, as it currently stands if you buy a copy of HoT and you already own the base game, you do not actually get another CD-key for the base game! So you’re already getting a deal worse than the deal ANET claims to be making with you, and on top of that if you’re out of character slots you need to pay even more (yes, I realize you can delete a character or pay with gold, but that is essentially paying with your time and therefore definitely not free) to get a character slot to play the new profession.
Oh, but you say I’ve been getting a good deal all this time? Well, I agree. That’s why for years now I have expressed my loyalty and rewarded them by buying gems. I also agree that when an expansion is on the horizon it is time to demonstrate loyalty; time for the developer to demonstrate loyalty to the long-term fans! This expansion will make significant changes to the professions and many game effects (movement/leap abilities, how conditions work, etc.). Some have even said that the changes are so vast that it should essentially be called GW3. Thus, it is not unreasonable for current players to be a little worried that ANET might be screwing up a good thing, and by extension it would make sense for ANET to try and shore up our faith by making some gesture of appreciation. Doesn’t have to be a big deal, just something to say “hey, we noticed you’ve been playing our game, and we’re about to make some big changes to it. We know that you might be a bit worried about all the changes, but we’re hoping you stick with us. Either way, we’re pleased to offer you ______ because we appreciate all our customers, not just the new ones.”
Now this “gesture of appreciation” doesn’t have to be a big thing, doesn’t have to be a character slot, doesn’t have to be some gems, doesn’t even have to be a skin. It could have been any little thing. What did we get instead? No, no, not nothing; less than nothing, in fact. ANET has straight up penalized their existing customer base by offering us a deal which is objectively worse than that being offered to new people.
In short, one can’t help but worry that ANET has been being duplicitous for months if not years, and that they don’t seem to care about you much once they have your money. That’s fine, they’re not obliged to care about me, but I’m similarly not obliged to keep giving them money. This has already been a great year for games and it is looking to get better; I can and will spend the money that would have gone to ANET elsewhere.
Hopefully they offer us some sort of compromise, and if they do then it is likely I will pick up HoT. However, at this point I just don’t feel comfortable pre-ordering and implicitly rewarding them for behaving in this shady manner."

DONE! I’m gonna use the $50 towards Fallout 4.
Now why didn’t I think of that myself…? That is a really good idea.

Day 3 of the Siege of Thorns. Keep at ‘em, they’re weakening!
No loyal veteran customer base should be reduced to groveling for a fair deal. That’s what’s happening here. Instead of just giving us the two slots with standard, just like they did for EoTN, they have everyone begging for just one. Then you have the absolute victims who are doing anything they can to justify their enjoyment of the beating.
Consumerist Stockholm Syndrome.
Then there are the users like me who will happily give the money to Anets competition. Anet love ultimatums, as do I in cases like this, for consumers that will flee to the other great mmos coming out there will be lots of developers happy to take Anets business.

Appearently this thread is being read by Gaile and her team so here are some starter questions:
Starting Questions
1) Can we get details on the boxed versions? The FAQ is rather vague about it.
Are there any? Will there be a collectors edition (like every other MMO does out there). Do you put more effort in them than with the core game release? (At least on the level of the original GW boxed releases?)
2) How propable are changes?
3) Did you expect the backlash? How much backlash did you expect?
The Issue at hand
The inclusion of the core game devalues the expansion price, as in that it is only for new players. Older player do not benefit from it in any way.
Compairing it to other games who do something like that, you always have the option to sell your older inferior version.
Right now you are selling Guild Wars 2 2.0 and not Guild Wars 2 HoT.
(Compare it to something like Street Fighter, where you get at least 3 updates ranging from Super, Ultra and Tournament edition, you are always able to sell your old version, so it is no complete loss)
It is all about the percived value and right now it is a loss for all who already own the game, since we can only compare it to hat exist and that is the core game.
Since there is no seperate price for the expansion, even if you claim it would be 50$, it just doesn`t feel that way since there is no choice.
Players who own the game pay the same amount as new players, but get less and might even have paid more.
It is not that new players only get the new game, they also get some digital goodies as well. For example they get an armor worth 600-800 gems for free, which is another bonus players who bought at launch don`t have.
Right now the value of the game rises with the time that has passed, minus the time you enjoyed with special events. However i am talking from the “fresh start” perspective.
Of course a veteran got their moneys worth already, even shed out more money, however so far we could choose to do so.
This offer does not give us any choice.
Right now the only thing that is reasonable is in fact the 100$ ultimate edition, even though the “50$” worth of gems on stuff you can dictate the price on, since it is your monopoly is kinda iffy to begin with.
Extra round rant
The digital stuff. Is it really that much worth? The way I see it we see a lot of reused assets. Decorations, Rytlock Mini and the finisher are things that are already in the game, just repurposed. The Rytlock finisher is just boring by the way. He walks by and grabs the spear. Seriously?
The glider skin is the only thing that feels unique and even that feels like a preview for the gem-shop, basicaly saying: You will see more of them at release
I am sorry, as amazing as you devs are you really drop the ball with these things. The digital stuff in the original release was the same. Digital crap, where only 2 of 5 things had continues value. And one of them was a Mini.
To be honest the best reward you ever gave were the HoM skins and for that you had to buy and play 2-4 awesome releases.

As a veteran, I can honestly say that years ago when we were standing on the steps of the Great Temple of Balthazar having large and active discussions on how micro transactions would ruin anet, and ultimately see Guild Wars sold to us piecemeal…
Let’s just say I don’t think I’m alone (I didn’t hear voices) when I say I never really thought it’d go this far..I didn’t foresee the aNet we have now..
Thats because they were replaced by employees from EA!

Veteran players feel unappreciated, players that just bought recently have to pay twice for a base game. Somehow I can’t help but to think that it’s a publicity stunt to gain attention, and they probably already have a plan to “fix or compensate” later. It’s just impossible that Anet didn’t see these bad responses coming.

So i am going to link this its fun to play with but when you use it ask your self how much is it to make a game or expatiation now becuse this is just inflation only. I like to bring up the ideal of if needed goods and services go up in price then non-needed goods and services should go up too. Its nice to live in a dream world where prices never changes but they do and entertainment tends to changes much faster then needed items. I would not be shocked at one point we will see games nearing the 100$ ranges as they are now (system games).
Really don’t need to play your game because you seem to be missing the point that most (not all) are making. It is not the $50 price tag, it is the lack of character slot for vets to play a Revenant, it is the void value of the core game, it is that we are essentially paying twice, and the fact that we are paying for content we have already played.
My beef is with the dishonesty regarding the FAQ’s more then anything, but the other points that other players are concerned about are also just as valid. What exactly are we getting ? the more I think about it it really doesn’t seem like all that much in comparison to other MMO xpacs, or even GW1 xpacs for that matter.
Then trying to throw in a hidden $10 value fee to buy a character slot so you can play part of the content your already paying for ? That is pretty slimy no matter how you try and cut it.

And for those that are saying they just recently bought the game and feel shafted now… If you already knew an expansion was coming out, surely you knew you were going to be paying for it?
They feel shafted because the wording of the original FAQs page indicated the base game and HoT would be 2 separate purchases and it isn’t. It’s a one-time purchase for both games that the vast majority would have waited to buy together if they’d had any indication of that possibility at all.
Ok, that is a solid point. I had no idea about the FAQ issue. I’ve been wading through all the outcries and must have missed that.
I change my stance on people that recently purchased the game. That said, veterans of the game saying they feel shafted I just can’t wrap my mind around.
It’s not hard to wrap your mind around really, new player gets the game and the xpac with 5 open character slots and 2 bank tabs. With those 5 open character slots they can create the new class The Revenant. Vet player gets the xpac, already has 2 bank tabs so that’s void, has all the core game so that’s void, and has all their character slots full. So if they want to play the new class which is a pretty major selling point for many, they have to either delete a character they have put time, effort, possibly money into, or they can buy a new character slot for an additional fee.
This is not my issue, I have an extra slot available but I can certainly see why they are upset. If I didn’t already have a slot available, your darn right I would want that slot, because my xpac just jumped from $50 – $60 if I want to play the new class that is a feature of the xpac.
