1: I don’t think that IS possible if you aren’t glass cannon. You might not have noticed conditions ticking on you. Maybe there was another person attacking you too? I’m not sure, but I’ve never been two shot by a player. Maybe someone else can help you more on this one.
2: We do lack consistent ways to get swiftness like some of the other classes have. If this REALLY bothers you, you could go Staff (the chaos storm grants swiftness sometimes) and sword/focus. What we don’t have in flat-out swiftness running speed we gain in shennanigans (decoy and blink not only stealth/move you respectively but will break you out of stuns). I consider it a fair trade, but I use focus so this problem doesn’t hit me as hard.
3: Guardians can be pretty tanky. If you don’t have points in the domination trait line this could be hurting your damage a bit from sword attacks. Mix that with him being a tanky Guardian and voila, very low damage. Going up the power and precision trait lines can really help with damage, but you’ll be much more glass cannon-y.
4: The answer to this is that you either need to learn to turn quickly, cast and then dodge roll away or only use the abilities that DON’T require a target (decoy, blink, etc). The second option is much easier and much more reliable, but if you don’t have a way to get swiftness and you have a long run to make they might still catch you.
They DO need to fix the pathing of the illusionary leap guy on hills and odd terrain, but it’s only a mild annoyance at most for me.
I don’t mind daze/stun being evaded by dodge rolls and it being LoSed makes sense to me as well. I think it’s good when control abilities can be countered in some sense. And with the Mantra daze being instant (meaning you can use it WHILE doing something else, like dodging or casting something) the small downside that it can be LoSed or dodged is…well, small.
I do think their definitions for what counts as “obstructing” are a little wonky and I’ve had a few spells fail in places that I think were BS, but I find this to also be pretty minor.
Portal is really useful in jump puzzles, though. You can use it before jumps that look especially hard and then place the exit if you fall and just port back up. You can also use it to help friends when they mess up, or finish the puzzle for people who want the rewards but don’t like jump puzzles.
I’ve really enjoyed using Portal to help friends in puzzles or just help random allies who show up while I’m doing one. Also, there are jump puzzles in the WvWvW zones that give you a guaranteed 2 siege weapon blueprints (includes siege golem), some badges of honor and three pieces of 79-80 gear. If you like jump puzzles and some light pvp, they are great places and reset daily with the daily achievement.
I can’t compare Guardian and Mesmer for you because I’ve only really played my Mesmer. However, the Mesmer is great for helping players (Feedback, Nullfield, Mass Invisibility, Veil, Time Warp) and is solid support in WvWvW fights. Unfortunately, though, in WvWvW you won’t be able to “tag” a lot of enemies due to a significant lack of AoE. So if you’re really worried about getting loot in big sieges, that’s a large negative.
Be forewarned, though, the Mesmer will tend to kill things a little slower than most other classes until you get a decent set of traits under your belt. Even then, it can be rough without a solid build and a really good understanding of what all of your abilities do.
