“But, why then can my Engineer be dropped from full health to zero while stealthed and blocking by a ranger’s “Rapid Fire?” It can be dodged you might say, and that would be true if not for the ranger’s immobilize, which can’t be broken by any means other than damage"
Oh my goodness!!! here we go again with this rapid fire issue. I only have a few things to say to you mr. engi:
1. learn to play your class
2. rapid fire is blockable
3. even when immobilized a doge will still evade damage. You can further escape from spider web, longbow #4 etc . . . by using rocket boots or by aiming your rifle’s #5 at the roots when entangled, using elixir’s evade ability.
There are so many ways a class can counter any situation . . .
P.S. there are other classes that use an immobilize/burst combos; mesmers, thiefs and even warriors not to mention engineers with their never ending knockbacks, lol.

There are several things to considder when playing a ranger. Althought the Holy Trinity does not exist in this game (not in its pure form) there are still some classes that are better at some of these roleplays than others just as there are some builds that are better at certain functions than others.
This is the reason why a guardian that gives a lot of boons/heals will teleport to the middle of the fray. Because his build can soak up a lot of damage while he empowers his allies.
So my first advise to you is to look a your build and decide wheather it fits one of these roles better.
My second advise would be for you to inform yourself about other classes and also about how others (the good ones) play your build. There is a lot of information on Youtube as well as these forums. If you are really interested about becoming a good ranger then you will definitely want to research and read a lot about the class.
Third, don’t try to replicate what other classes do. Know your place as a ranger and learn to take advantage of it. Learn to use your pet and you will not feel the need for stealth or teleport mechanics because you will not be running from battles anymore.
Last, I will share my build with you. Its nothing fancy/new, and its certanly not gonna make you all-powerful, but if you learn when and how to use each of the skills then you will find yourself making more stomps than before.
This build focuses on harrassing the enemy and helping people win battles so you can quickly help your allies in the next capture point. I personnally beleive that it has great mobility and versatility. If you would like to have someone to practice with then I will definitely help you as long as you catch me online : ). Good luck and I hope this helps.
If i had a celestial build, this is what it would look like:
As u correctly pointed out the difference is not that great, the only stat that concerns me is condition damage since this build does not focus on that. However with the survival skills you can take a little advantage of it.
If you don’t want to head in that direction then I recommend you to switch it for Rampage as one as well as change Lightning reflexes for signet of stone. You will also have to adjust the traits from Wilderness knowledge to Shared anguish and SteadyF ocus to Signet Mastery. Good luck with your build and I hope to hear about your findings soon.
Phobos (wolf) and Medicus (sylvan hound), have been my companions since I first started my journey. They have kept me safe in every game mode WvW, PvP and PvE. Even if no one wants to party with me on EBG, they still help me take on the world. I will always be a ranger at heart, no matter what.
really bro, if my ranger could slap another character it would be yours. You come here with words like integrity and i’m just trying to be fair but i can see that u just want my class to be nerfed . . . yet again. Even with these new “buffs” ranger is still considdered an easy kill for many. So leave the class alone, If anything we should get longer range on lb and better gs skills.

If you don’t like the pets then this class if not for you. The only thing that differenciates a ranger from other classes is the pet, if we don’t have it then we might as well be a necro or warrior. I agree that they are not the smartest but not all of them are useless and there are many rangers who use then at the core of their strategy: sylvan hound, wolf, krytan drakehound, spiders just to name some. Some people use moas and I personnaly think they are the worst.
What I think is that there are rangers who start fighting and forget about the pet and its F2 ability. When they finally remember, the thing is either dead or not doing what they feel it’s supposed to be do. Its sad to see that the ranger forum has one of the highest amount of players that hate their class. The fact that this coincides with the amount of bad rangers out there is no surprise.
Athough we cannot expect pets to have an AI that can make split second descions like us I do agree that we need more pet to ranger interaction with regards to stats editing and looks. I’m thinking more in the lines of pets changing as we go up levels or progress on the personnal story. Just as we get rewards for map completion or personnal story progress we should also see visible or stat changes on our pets in the form of items, stat changes or skins.
I believe that you need to make a decision, you either go for critical damage or for condition damage. It is very difficult to finally decide to go for one since there are a lot of good things in the ranger [if used right], for the most part I’ve gone with a build like this:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNUQJATRjUqUwaFL+rw1ag9AZdgCRYfZUIXbLZFPB-T1CBABYcIAyR9nGuAATp8DgHAgHHBAV0E8g5Pu3fIDlg6pDIAACwO3ZAApAqSYE-w
It had amazing attack but little evasion and condition removal so when I met thieves, eles or necros they would shred me to pieces. In the end this build only worked in a full party where I can position myself at the back to take full advantage of the superior projectile distance. 1 v 1 – definite no.
Going back to your build, I noticed you have the Signet of Renewal. However your pet needs to be practically beside you for the signet to take effect. On your nature magic trait line you have the Strength of Spirit which increases your base attack. There is a reason why shortbow and sword have attacks that barely go further than 500. The reason is because the main utility of these weapons is to apply conditions. If you looks closely your shortbow will instantly apply a bleed if you are attacking from the back or from the side, it will apply poison, it has a daze, and also an evade. Likewise your sword has similar effects. I will definitely give you credit for the sword/dagger combo. I believe it is the best. My point is, try to exploit the condition damage of your weapons instead of trying to make them do things that they are not supposed to.
After the patch I made a new build, that is the one I run with now. In my opinion it has amazing condition removal and survivability. It focuses on condition damage [not duration] since I want to make the most condi-damage possible within the normal time frames set for the weapons and it has a LOT of evasion. If you get used to it you will feel that you fight like a thief because you will be moving all around the place, lol:
if you notice there a lot of ways for you to have regeneration so your health will stay up. A lot of dodge since your nourishment and trait amount to 65% endurance regeneration rate, plus you gain protection and might [increase in power and condi damage] when you doge. If you time if right you will be have at least 3 stacks of might when swapping pets since the effect lasts 19 sects and pet swap is about the same amount. The lightning reflexes is a life-saver plus every time you use it you remove two conditions from yourself. Additionally you are removing 3 conditions every 10 secs. And when activating your Elite Skill you will apply Torment Poison and Bleeding for 8 seconds.
I do not recommend the quickening zephyr since it cuts your healing to half and you will be regenerating health almost all the time. If you are cool with the normal moving speed then you may replace it with the muddy terrain to immobilize and then the Elite the muddy terrain will ensure that the Elite hits the mark.
I do understand that you build is in progress [hence the reason you need to hear other opinions] so I hope that after hearing our opinions you can update us with your revised build.
no bro it does not get better, i have a lvl 57 ranger and bottom line it still sucks
well it depends what you want to do
if you like the adrenaline of WvW then ranger is the last profession you wanna pick [I know ‘cas I’m a ranger myself]. Rangers get discriminated a lot, no one wants to peer with them, even worst when enemies see a ranger they don’t think twice about attacking
A ranger is best for solo-adventerous players who like exploring more than anything else, you get an extensive selection of pets that you can tame in virtually every map and with speed and the farthest longbow shot of any profession you will not have to fear for your life.
I enjoy my ranger and I don’t think I would change him in a long time. Had a fight with a thief in WvW. I was impressed to say the least, thiefs are masters of deceit, they disappear in one place and appear in another and their stealth is superb it is the perfect profession if you are a solo-sneaky player.
So it all depends what you feel your role in a group (or alone) would be
i’m a ranger, i need a close combat player to complement my a bilities
what profession are you
buying low and selling high is good but you need to keep track and also you need to play it safe since putting your stuff too high is not gonna cut it.
I advise you to sell the stuff that you get from drops.
Everytime you look in your inventory you will see that certain items will say [unusable weapon/armor for your profession] or something to that extent.
If you right click on it you will have the option to sell at trading post.
At the moment of selling it will give you the option of setting your own price. As a rule I set it at 20 Silver over its real value, whatever the price is or whatever item just set 20 Silver over.
It is not gonna make you game rich but it will sustain your future operations [traveling, repairs and so forth]
- there’s stuff you cant sell at the trading post, you will have to sell that to an NPC and as a last resort destroy it
So I have a ranger, and yes now I see that people don´t like them, but I still like him cas I´m a solo player.
My question was how do you improve a ranger´s firing distance?
If you can’t, what do you improve?
This, I feel, is very important since keeping enemies away is the only way to survive with a ranger.
