Did you know that thief can easily chain 12 seconds of stealth from just 1 black powder? (4 x hs)

To start he’d be lucky to get 4 hs on a black powder. I can only manage 3 at the best of times but whatever.
And then what?
Zero initiative… some will regen while in stealth but what’s the point?

Do you realise certain spec Guardians are almost impossible to kill.
Do you realise Mesmers can port lots of people inside keeps.
Do you realise whine whine whine…

So what! Get on with your life.

So what happens when the enemy decide to use cata to take down the walls instead, or build a treb and destroy all your siege first.

It’s already too easy to take an objective with a small group of people, let alone a zerg.

Pretty much everything the OP said is valid, except that’s only because of the huge zergs.

Fix the zergs and you fix almost everything that’s wrong with WvW.

well i think we have here another case of the waterfield syndrome…

first thing first : this game is/was not designed for any classes to use unlimited stealth at will at any time

so with this premise lets look what makes the perma stealth thief so OP:
the possibility to reset the whole fight for himself while using a minimum of utility skills and have no need to use these to kill someone else.

My experience with d/p thieves as a p/d (playing more for the lulz):

Round 1
he comes at me, kills of 30% of my hp i use caltrops, steal with poison, c&d then the one. he has like 10-15 bleeding stacks, he goes to stealth.
Round 2
after 5sec. he comes back at me again. full health, not a single bleeding stack no poison and even some might stacks while i am lurking at 80% hp… same procedure as above i fight left reght then i see my health is low .. refuge .. he just stealths away.
Round 3
he comes for the kill (with 100% life no conditions).. i use my signet blind him use dagger storm he backs off phew
Round 4
he comes again, calltrops still on 4 sec. cooldown,.. using heal signet.. health still dropps c&d, runaway but then down from autoattack.. i die, he is with 70% hp…

this repeated 3 times then i gave the supp camp and the dollys up.

in this fight every single of my utility was able to help me fend off the thief (at this point dear reader please remember not every class has such usefull utility skills), but every time i got the edge, put pressure on him, he vanished and reseted the fight for him while keeping most of the utility up and ready. somebody above said it a tactics to kill tanks.. well it doesnt kill only tanks, it kills everything with a 99% success ratio…

you say this has no uses in wvw? destroying siege, killing caravans, farming people runnig from spawn to the keep while its under siege… these things are crucial and the perma stealth thief excel so good at this things its just retarted…

tl;dr
perma stealth thieves have no valid counters besides 10 supplys and a stealth trap and that’s why they are OP

So you stood toe-to-toe with this guy?
Why didn’t you back off and give yourself some time to heal or gain cooldowns?
If he had to chase a little he would be at a disadvantage, losing initiative and probably missing attacks.
Perhaps you did, I dunno, but simply moving around a lot, dodging and AOEing usually deters them enough to move on.

Sounds like you wanted to prove a point, but it just showed that his build was better than yours for that scenario.

Even that won’t stop the Thief haters though. Next they’ll complain that several thieves are attacking different gates.

Indeed, it doesn’t take a thief to contest a keep or tower. Any class can do it and SM in particular is difficult to cover all gates at all times.

The fault is certainly with the “one tap to contest” mechanic and NOT the Thief.

No, Arrow Carts have changed the Meta for the BETTER. Sorry you can’t just roam the map and trade caps with the enemy team, but if you have an Arrow Cart and Ballista already setup in your keep, there should not be ANY reason for the enemy team to set up siege of their own.

What actually happens though is that they set up an arrow cart right outside your wall and use a zoomhack to melt your trebs and ACs, even if they are right in the middle.

EDIT: I don’t think my last response was appropriate.

If it takes them to resort to hacking, so be it. It really can’t happen that often surely.

However, they could use zoom hacks before and still take out all your siege, where it counted.

Arrow Cart Mastery…
In tier 5 where a zerg might mean 20-30 people, AC Mastery has been a good thing.

A handful of people can now defend an objective and focus siege build sites to slow an attack, although not as well since the siege damage nerf.

However I have also noticed that a larger force of well organised people can quickly do the opposite. Wipe all siege from the walls and continue on as before.

It has helped with all but the craziest of zergs. We just need something introduced to break up the zergs even more in my opinion.

We have enough different opinions and the thread is just going circular now. There’s nothing new coming to the discussion at all.
Keeping it open just makes it seem more important than it is, with largely the same people complaining/defending.

Thanks for the Ranger video, it is fantastic.

Coupled with other videos such as the solo Mesmer beating thieves (yes plural), it’s proof that good players can beat them like any other class.

The only remaining gripe can only be the stealth and running away/resetting the fight. But as was proven with the Ranger video and as shown by Osicat’s Mesmer videos, almost all classes also have the ability to run away/reset should they wish to.

Had the Ranger wanted to, he could easily have left those enemies for dust. The Ranger also showed how to reset the fight, simply by creating distance, no need for stealth at all.

It really is all about skill.

I am nowhere near that skillful and wish certain other individuals would admit that fact to themselves.

It’s a known bug that they have said will be fixed in the next build.

I think it could have been more widely announced, but in the meantime don’t waste supply on oil.

I think devs need to introduce a “Casual Player Buff” that makes you invulnerable until your kill/death ratio is within a given range.

OK, I know some players will be pretty much perma buffed for their entire life, but if it stops the whining I’m all for it!

Yup Yishis is very good, far better than your average player.
Know your class (and your opponents) half as good as he does and you’ll have no trouble from 99% of thieves.

However, this is a pretty poor example of a Godlike Thief.

First fight shows him chasing a small PUG group with no buffs/food, running with their backs to him, one of which decides peering over a cliff and shooting down below is a good idea. The others don’t even appear to be fighting half the time. then a trickle of others join, most up-levelled.

Second fight is 1vs2 at the ruins. The thief decides it’s better to try to rez his buddy than to fight and shows zero skill afterwards.

The rest of the video is pretty much 1v1.

None of the opponents gave a good fight and the group coordination was pathetic.

This video just shows how bad most WvW players actually are.

OK smart guy. Pull up some videos of every other profession soloing a group of 5-8 people.

I challenge you to pull up a video of 1 other profession doing this.

Doh, I already did, look back in the posts.
Or you could have searched for yourself first instead of looking like a fool..

They weren’t new players, they were on my old guild who have been playing quite sometime in both WvW and pvp. 2 of them were tanky types.. not sure about the other 4 though.

You see there is not much you can do if a thief decides to break stealth and nearly kill a bunker build on their first hit, then get lucky with the next strike to kill.. if not, just stealth, rinse and repeat.. before anybody can act.

This should not be the case. Stealth should be given at minimum a 15s cooldown after a thief comes out of stealth

You saw 6 people (from your OLD guild) get killed by a solo thief.
2 of them were bunker type builds but you don’t know what the others were.
One bunker was almost killed on the first shot and finished on the next strike.
You don’t mention the others.

So where were you when this was happening?
Were you in the party, perhaps the first bunker that got rinsed?
How else do you know it was 2 shots?
What the kitten were the rest of the group doing, gathering for dailys?

Even if it’s partially true, it certainly sounds like it happened before many thief nerfs and the group were just clueless.

Was there a fight club or just a q ? And idk all the servers I have played against and done fight clubs with try their hardest to make sure it effects nothing always in a bl and not during na primetime.. so on

There was a fight club with 60 – 80 players, and a queue where 2 of our guildies couldn’t enter for over 30 minutes. We were pretty much the only ones defending Hills and could have used a little help.
It’s not generally a major problem and I don’t want to make a big deal of it, other than to say that it can be a problem at times.

It does happen and can make the difference between winning and losing.

Anti stealth trap do nothing to thief. (If you clever). It will cripple bad bad bad bad thief. But not a good one. (or average one). Thief should not rely only stealth for escape. If you rely stealth only for escape, you also a bad thief.

Stealth is a major component of almost all Thief builds.
Stealth is needed not only for escape, but also healing, damage, initiative regen, condition removal, boons – just off the top of my head.

You say it does nothing to Thief “If you clever”. The only clever thing to do would be to run away for 30 seconds, by which time most fights are already over, zerg or not.

Trap has 4 s channeling time. 1v1 with thief.
1. Are you sure you can still live when you finished channeling a trap ?
2. Are you sure thief will dumb enough to walk into your trap if he sees you placing a trap ?
3. Are you sure they will not interrupt you while channeling a trap ?

Anti-stealth trap will not work in 1v1. Unless you xv1 thief and your team-mate place a trap, it will work. But its xv1 not 1v1. And here: you waste 15 badges and 525 karma for a single thief which only give you 2 badges and no karma (maybe you will get a good item). In 1 v 1 case, thief can escape from you even without stealth.

Who’s talking about 1v1?
What about regular group play, where the thief is basically out of the fight until it’s over?

I’m not against these GvG events as such and feel this type of play should be catered for.
What can be annoying is that there could upwards of 60 – 80 players sometimes, hanging around the dueling areas waiting to fight, and waiting, and waiting, because that it what it seems to consist of largely.
All the while, we are losing towers and keeps while your buddies can’t enter because of queues.

I understand that reading english might be difficult, but what does GvG have to do with the discussion at hand? I don’t think I’ve mentioned GvG at all.

You’re just being pedantic.

You were suggesting that other classes can’t 1vX, they can, despite there being more videos from thieves showing this.

Why roll a thief to get around a map largely unnoticed?
Then why roll a class other than Mesmer if you like the idea of porting groups of people around the map?
You choose the best class for the job obviously!

You didn’t mention GvG, so what?
You’re talking about Thieves regularly killing groups.
By GvG I wasn’t talking about organised events by the Windmill where this situation wouldn’t occur, but rather the guilds, small or large, roaming the maps for encounters with similar sized groups, who produce videos of their encounters and discuss them in the forums.

Oddly I’ve never seen them whining that they got wiped by a thief before they got started, or a thief spoiled their night.

Now go ahead and pick the bones out of that if you like. It seems you’re more of a troll than any thief I saw.

Some people simply like to play alone, Thief is the natural first choice.

Why is that? Players who roll other classes all love to play with zergs? How do you know this?

Most of these videos are from only a few individuals.
These individuals are unlikely to post videos of the fights that they lost.

I’m not sure I understand these assumptions. Does this mean there are less individuals with Fraps playing other classes? How do you know this? Why are all the individuals who record WvW magically attracted to this one class?

It’s possible they may be unlikely to post videos of losses, but this same principle could apply to players who video record as any class.

Despite what many would have you believe, or you choose to believe from seeing a few videos, WvW is not overrun by Godlike Thieves. Certainly not in my experience.

Neither is it as easy as people make out. I can barely land a CnD on a moving player let alone a backstab, especially with any kind of group around with CC’s and AoE.
Indeed when I’m targetted by a Thief myself, I don’t really do much other than keep moving, dodge and AoE before they move on for an easier kill.

Traps: more zerging

People need to stop doing complicated mathematical somersaults to back up the “encourages zerging” mantra, as if ArenaNet can govern human nature. Players group up in big zergs because, to them, it’s the fastest and safest way to take objectives, be it supply camps, towers, whatever.

No amount of designing by ArenaNet is going to change that.

One tiny “amount of designing” could have changed that.
Make it so supply traps only work when more than 5 -10 – x number of players are within the area at the same time.

That would have really done something towards breaking up the zergs, preventing a scout on point from triggering the trap first, whilst at the same time making smaller group play more viable.

More misinformation:
Thief is not the fastest class in the game.

Nor does it do the most burst damage.
And it’s not the most survivable.

for everyone that say’s they can down good thieves 1 v 1 with ease, please do show us the video? Otherwise, it’s thieves trying to steal the message of the thread.

You can down a good Thief, good Mesmer, good Warrior, etc. It’s all about skill. If your opponent has more skill than you, it won’t be easy.

So why is it that when I get on my Thief, I die less than any of my other lv 80 characters? You’re telling me that I magically become more skilled when on it?

It’s even my 2nd least played character.

Edit: I’m not saying that Thieves are super over-the-top OP, but to claim that Thieves die as much as any other class is ridiculous. And this is coming from a Thief.

Does your thief have as many kills as your other characters?

Thieves don’t die as much, so take them out of the equation, who’s next on your list of who dies less?

That’s just it isn’t it? A matter of perspective? You say you haven’t seen as many as I describe, yet I see them all the time. Spent a good hour before I logged last night dealing with about 5 of them in fact.

I generally play in a small 5-10 man guild group roaming the borderlands in T3/T4.
I’ve played against many different servers and can honestly say that we rarely encounter thieves that are anything more than an annoyance.
If I said it happens once or twice every night in a 6-8 hour play session, I would be exaggerating.

Sorry if your mileage varies, I can’t account for that.
What tier do you play, out of interest?

Thing is surviving a thief attack in most cases is temporary. If a good thief jumps you and survive their initial assault, they disengage, reset, and repeat in a relatively short time. Most thieves can slowly wear down someone by hit and run without ever really risking death even when faced by multiple opponents.

I play pure WvW, nothing else.

I’m an aging MMO relic with the reactions of a sloth, yet even I have very few problems.

The whole issue is really blown out of proportion and seriously, the thief population in WvW has dropped considerably over recent weeks/months with people switching to Ele’s and Mesmers for their kicks now.

EDIT: applies to post above as well.
Don’t you have the same problems catching mesmers or other classes? I can’t even keep up with some warriors. Then we have those who Alt F4 or jump off a cliff.

Keep it in perspective please.

I don’t get it. Poster above openly admits he can easily survive against 1 thief, but wants to be able to tackle a team of thieves.
The biggest whine I see in this thread is that some people can’t deal with the fact that a thief might actually get away.
Are people really so upset about losing a badge? You still won the fight if the other player had to run.

Hate to break it to ya but WvW isn’t about POI’s.
If I wanted world completion I’d have to do another 50% of the map. A playstyle I don’t like.
But don’t worry, Anet are going to cater for you guys soon enough, it’s already on the cards.

Had some good fights tonight against both servers. Even if we end up on the 3rd place, i think this week we’ll have a fun and intense matchup

The thief video…
All it needed was for the largish group to constantly AOE the area. Works every time.
I didn’t see any attempt to kill this thief, and in fact they looked as if they were ignoring him for much of the time.
CND has a short range, AOE the place and the thief can’t stay near enough to perma-stealth.
I didn’t notice this thief get knocked out of refuge… happens to me all the time.
C’mon, the “zerg” weren’t helping themselves at all.

Somebody already mentioned it but think about it…

A trap that removes all supplies from everyone in a small area – think zerg.
Tactically placed, this could really help to split up the blobs, although they could just put someone on “point” to trigger the trap before the zerg gets there.

A trap that triggers when more than x number of players are in the area might be a better idea, or a variety of traps to include the zerg trap.

This idea just needs some tuning.

I have noticed something similar when applying Basilisk Venom to certain Mesmers. There seems to be absolutely no effect.
