Agreed would be nice to know if this is going to come back. I have been playing through the first game again to unlock stuff. I hit the 15 mark last month and got the message that it was disabled.

I found plenty of people linking to why it went down. But I too would like to know if or when is it coming back?

I just want to make sure I am not spinning my wheels grinding out stuff from the original series if the fix is down the road with no eta.

I hope they can get it sorted.

Where did the term 'toon' come from?

I’ve been calling them toons since the EQ days. It was what I was taught and back then no one said alt.

(4) The dumbing down of low-level content is sad. I liked carrying things, pouring buckets of water on crops and fires, whipping cattle, and cleaning up scraps and tools. Active participation in the happenings of the world is more fulfilling and immersive than what the changes offer.

(6) The compass is ridiculous. Not only does it sometimes give you bad guidance, but a big selling point for GW2, offered (I guarantee) by many of the players who now support this compass nonsense, is that the game lacked aspects of linear hand-holding of other games. It’s a visual distraction that I don’t need anyway, so at least let me turn it off.

Yes to #4 and #6 you can turn it off under options. I think someone mentioned it on the first page but that was one of the first things I did upon re-rolling another new toon today.

I thought removing all the pickup items was silly but going back to Metrica hit harder then Queensdale. It is faster I will agree with that now. As long as you ignore all mobs that aren’t attached to a heart or event you will level like crazy. But seeing all the rc golems and tool chests turned off made me sad. Killing sparks charges you now instead of picking up orbs and that was kind of fun. But I miss the underwater heart it’s just an abandoned area now. That one was more then a bit of fun and I always hit it up then waited for the shark to spawn. I know the heart is still there and just moved to the toad village but still it doesn’t have the same charm.

There’s good and bad for now I think I will reserve any further judgement for next weeks patch.

Interesting from the misconceptions on level gating thread.

Hey folks,

Wanted to pop by and give another update on where we stand, as well as to help provide some information on some of the more common misconceptions we’ve seen floating around as well:

- There are bugs! We’ve seen the content direction system (the little arrow) pointing people at super high level maps when it shouldn’t, some systems/features not unlocking as intended for all characters on your account once your first learns them, some systems level gated that aren’t intended to be, balance issues where certain levels appear to be very out of whack, etc. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, our team is working to figure out what happened here and fix these as quickly as possible.

- There is misinformation: Numerous systems that show up in the level up guide that teaches you about things in the game when you gain levels are not locked out, the system simply tells you they exist in the game to help give you a better list of things you can do. Just because it’s included in the level up guide, doesn’t mean it’s actually locked out. You can dodge from level one, jumping puzzle from level one, etc. There also appear to be a lot of folks chiming in who haven’t actually played with any of the system, and are making claims that aren’t remotely true.

- There are some things happening at the wrong levels. Things like utility skills and elites are intended to come at approx. the same time they used to in actual game time, we sped up leveling for levels 1-15 and had them slide back in levels a bit to offset that pacing, they are not currently where we want them to be in the level up system. This was an oversight, and will absolutely be fixed.

- Not all of these changes were made as ways to teach the game, some of them are to provide a better sense of pacing, reward and progression. Early on we want to give a sense that you’re rapidly gaining new abilities, rewards, and learning new things as you level up. We added the level up reward messages, and the actual rewards themselves, and took abilities you’d usually use around that point in total game hours and presented them as unlocks (or things we teach that are already unlocked) to help give a better sense of pacing and progression.

With the addition of the new rewards, messaging, and level up screen to make leveling more exciting: we also wanted to make sure you had that feeling of excitement more often early on in the game, and presented new learning on a more regular cadence. So we greatly sped up leveling from levels 1-15. Many of the things unlocked at later levels are earned at about the same time period you used to start using them in the old system in actual real game time, we just staggered them out across the levels since we sped up leveling to make the game feel more rewarding early on.

- In general, this system is intended to be not only better for new players, but our hope is by the time it’s all in place you’ll find via the better rewards from levels 1-80 via the level up guide, the better rewards from personal story, the faster leveling from 1-15, and the ability to toggle the content direction system to help you with map complete will make this a better for experienced players as well.

- Over a years worth of testing with new players found we were absolutely able to keep them both more engaged, and more likely to return to keep playing Gw2 as a result of the intended system. That is at the end of the day, a win for all of us since all of you need more people to play with! However: if we find in the live environment that isn’t true and we’re not retaining new users better, we’ll absolutely both share that information with you, and continue to iterate to make it better. We keep very real time metrics of player retention for new users, and we’ll know very quickly how effective the work we’ve done is. I want to make it clear: what we used to have absolutely wasn’t good enough for our standards of retaining new users. Before we do some of the other things we want to do with Gw2, we had to fix this, period.

- Finally, I want to add that a few things (hello traits!) are things that can be improved for players who make multiple alts, we’re aware of this, and though company policy prevents us from discussing what’s in development: I can say we know Gw2 can be an even better game for people who love making alts in the long run, more info: when it’s ready™.

Well if some of this is not as intended and there is trait hope for alt addicts like myself I will stay on the fence for now. Hopefully we get a new patch next week correcting the changes that vets are seeing.

How about they do like the Skill unlock packs like in GW1? That was a nice feature for returning players who hadn’t hit up all the new content in the expansions. I would rather just buy a basic trait pack (not even talking grandmaster here) off the gem store that would allow me to experiment with builds when playing a new character like I could as I leveled up when the game was first released.

I don’t know why builds became such an evil thing that was not supposed to be attempted before 80.

I re-roll or used to re-roll toons all the time prior to the trait change and this feature patch. I have given it a go and my experience was different from the op’s. I started a new ranger and leveling 1-10 was about 3 hours following the arrow and tool tips. After that I reached the story which didn’t even last me a third of that time since it is all in one chunk now.

Maybe it was just my class choice that I chose to test the system with that dragged me down. I will try a non human starter character next with a different class. It may have just been the shock of seeing how simplistic Queensdale had become as it is a zone I have been in many times. I can’t understand how interacting with objects would be to difficult for anyone to learn.

I do thank the people who mentioned that you can turn off the compass. Think that should have been a tool tip for anyone who has an 80 upon logging in. Like I said I will give another toon a fresh go in a different city with a different class to see if it goes faster. It was one of the things that killed it for me testing after the patch getting to 10 I actually stopped before starting the story as it had taken so long and I was completely bored. That had not happened before for me except for some of the longer story quest towards the end game.

….. This needs a HotFix ASAP.
……

Oh yes….this is absolutely game breaking and must be fixed IMMEDIATELY!!!!

(that was extreme sarcasm if you can’t tell….)

I hate to break it to you BLINGers but game performance trumps cutesy pets EVERY time…..as it should.

Oh please. I know some friends who spent over 1000g on mini pets to get them and now they can’t even see them. I never saw them more kittened then that. They have every right to kitten about it.

Never said they couldn’t be upset about it, but just because they spent 1000g on digital “pets” does not mean Anet should drop everything and INSTANTLY fix this. To be honest, I think Anet was far too ambitious with this “feature” in the first place. They HAD to KNOW this would cause performance issues (and thus prevented them with the pet culling everyone is upset about) AND that putting it in place would anger the mini-peties out there.

No doubt (like LOTS in this update), it has been handled badly, but DEMANDING an instant fix like this issue keeps you from playing the game at all is just childish….

Some of us spent way more then that using cash to buy gems to buy pet packs. I was fine with the way it worked if I wanted my pet out I kept two to three in the top of each of my toons bags. Zone in hit “I” click pet, that was my traveling companion for the majority of the zone.

They seem to have forgotten to mention that pets would be culled before adding them to the area in the wardrobe. How many people do you think would have added them? Yes it’s nice that collections give you rewards but this was a working feature prior to this and why I bought minis from the shop. I just don’t understand how they can offer to sell new minis knowing they can’t even be seen in the majority of zones. They should at least put it in fine print for the new players who won’t know better and will purchase them from the gem store. But then again as new players won’t know better they may just see it as an expensive collection so win/win.

I truly hope that is case as well. If not it is kick when I’m already feeling down. I have bought most of the mini packs and special seasonal minis over the last couple years. I am one of the players who clicked my minis back up after I switched zones and usually carried a couple on each of my characters to change it up.

Hey everyone,

While this is currently working as intended, it’s definitely something that we’ll be working on and tweaking in the future. We want you to be able to enjoy your minis so hang in there!

So go buy those new mini’s we just put up for sale so you can’t see them either. I hate to be bitter but I wish I would have checked the forums before adding mine to my wardrobe. I truly thought after reading the patch notes that this was a cool new feature for the players.

My question here is even with a decent gaming rig if populations keep increasing are eventually all players just going to look like a default character losing dyes and skins?

Every day for the past week now at around 5:35 to 5:39 PST I get this message as the game goes black. Like clockwork I experience no other disconnects or interrupts except between that time.

There is nothing else running on my network and nothing is running in the background when this happens. It just seems strange that since an update a week back I suddenly have this error consistently. I would post the ArenaNet.log but it shows it was last modified on 08/07/13 so I don’t think it will help. I tried verifying and the other two files are up to date.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks for mentioning the survey I just went back through my email and filled it out. Hopefully next time they have a one time event they keep it separate from the guest weekend. I had to really work at convincing a couple of people to play and they will not be coming back anytime soon.

Friday the event kicked off at noon while we were at work. No worries we thought we could hit the storyline quests. Lions Arch to start it off and from there we bounced between zones and instances finding the quest npc’s broken. Saturday morning to early afternoon they were still broken. I convinced them to hit up a couple starter areas and class quests.

We met up had lunch screwed around at a bar for a couple hours. Feeling nice and relaxed we head our separate ways go home and hop back in the game. We check the npc’s and find they removed them instead of fixing. At which point buddy number 1 bails. My second buddy stuck around for a bit but was no longer interested in the event.

Morale of the story if you are going to do a one time event make sure that everything works and if not have support ready to fix the broken parts. Secondly if you are going to get friends coming in for a weekend event make doubly sure it is for part of the game that works. I felt like an kitten after convincing these guys to play to only hit problem after problem. Neither is interested in coming back and I can’t say I blame them. I did not follow any of the rest of the event after this and just tooled around with an alt the rest of the weekend.

The point of a security fob is to enter a fresh code every login. This process has worked fine like that for years even now when it has moved to phones and tablets. Please do not dumb down security to appease people that can’t take the time to enter a code.

I got to agree with a lot of the talk on here. I am not really a leader or a member becuase of zerg guild recruitment spamming. I miss the camaraderie of previous games but with guilds running wild like this it is just a headache I do not need.
Unlike the casuals I can remember the importants. I do not want to be a member of the faceless horde. I created my own guild of one just so the messages would stop.

EQ – Solemne – Twilight of Gods – Povar – Leader: Blackfists and later Flarin
BF1942 – BrownDirtCowboy – HSDWG – Leader: Bandit
BF1942 – BrownDirtCowboy – status hanger on of clan General Mayhem
BF1942 – CowboyCrash – AOW (Administrators of War – formerly General Mayhem) Leader: Black Otto and Mrs Otto
GW – Jorn Wolfgang – 4 man guild – Leader: Sorrow Dragon
EQ2 – Fantasay – Dirty Deeds – AB – (WoW’s release destroyed us along with a full class restructuring and I no longer remember the importants)
EQ2 – Fantasay Tanica – Exiles of Lowca – Crushbone – Leader: Rexornal then Whyllo
AOC – Laerith – Kings Guard (Game imploded and I no longer remember the importants)
SWTOR – Deekan – Exiles of Lowca (under another name) Leader: Rexornal until F2P and no one caring killed us
GW2 – Bebe Le Strange – Dead Man Floating – Me, myself and I

I still remember the majority of the people I played with in the games above. But in all those guilds/clans I either applied or was referred by a member. We may not have been the biggest but those people had my respect and friendship. I just do not feel that call in recruiting messages I see now. I can less care about the perks to be honest.

They are holiday themed skins. What’s the point of having the event if only a few people can match the theme. It’s like inviting all your friends to a toga party then randomly letting one person wear a toga.

Wasn’t that the point of the costumes being sold though?

All right lets assume ANET decides to completely bow to the customers here. They drop skins for every chest opened by players. How many people you think are going to come back on here and complain? They now have the skins they want but they are worthless to sell on the market and they have too many. If they would have known they would get so many skins they wouldn’t have opened 20-100+ BLC’s.

I dropped $50 the night the event came out. I opened 40+ BL chests and got bupkis. I opened 20-30 MK chests and got some alright Halloween loot but no skins. Realizing the odds I dropped another $50 transferred gems to gold and bought the skin I wanted. I even bought another 10 keys are so just for giggles. I don’t feel they forced me to waste my money I made that choice myself. But I have played other mmo’s with similar systems and I played Combat Arms back in the day I do know how they can hook you. I have never felt ripped off. I have felt like a jack kitten more then once on the next day especially when I bought stuff after drinking. But I have felt that too just going to the bar and getting drunk enough to buy others drinks and drop large tips.

So $150 down and I am alright with it by making the mad kings chests they gave us a second slim chance and that payed off for some. I am just happy they added it so the chests were holiday themed. Hopefully they do this from the start next time. Skip BLC keys and just sell holiday chests.

I have to partly agree with Stark as someone who bought a kitten load of LoN packs in EQ2. I have one heck of a decorated house to show for it though.

I don’t expect to get skins out of this. They should be rare I agree with this as well. I did however think other random halloween trash would have been in the chests. From recipes to candy and so on. The chance of getting one of the skins should be rare but without the trash items or lower end stuff it is not really up to snuff. As I said above and in my post earlier I bought LoN (Legend of Norrath) cards like a fiend. The chance of gettings a rare mount, cloak or house was slim you just had hope. You did however get the regular cards if you played the game along with low tier loot like cloaks, illusions, funny hats, etc… Now here it is my own fault for thinking when I read the notes it said skins and halloween items. I blew $50 honestly I have spent more in other games and in life just tooling around for fun. Assumption is the mother of all kitten ups.

I truly hope they do not hand out skins like candy. Reading the update above I hope it is just trading the normal trash items in chests for Halloween trash items.

Honestly I think they could make better money if they followed SOE’s Station Cash store. Just sell the skins for a basic price in gems. The way the chests are set up now is closer to the rares in LoN packs. The main thing is people usually only go crazy on them once. If you get bupkis most won’t do it again.

I think if they just upped the drop rate slightly they would see more cash come in. I know buying a full case of LoN packs you would have at least ended up with a bunch of generic loots and 1 or more rares.
