My current Mesmer main is “Mordrak The Jackal”. Mordrak is the name of a character who summons ghosts to defend himself(i.e. clones/phantasms). “The Jackal” because Mesmers seem like the ultimate troll profession, and therefore a laughing jackal(hyena) fits the bill nicely.
My strategy for naming anything is to go for references and things that fit the theme.
Why can’t we make OMFG pvp matches a regular thing? Sunday afternoons for example(it is theoretically repping day anyway).
More Weapons!
- Fan
- Pistol Mh
- Dagger?
Some sort of tank(ish) spec
Either kill DE or make something else to spam clones with. Virtually every build takes DE when those 20 points in dueling could probably be spent better somewhere else.
Actual Deception! Be it longer-lasting stealth, better clone AI, or just being hard to see/find.
More iLeap-Swap style abilities!
- for example, I would love to be able to trade places with one or any of my clones at will, it just seems like a very Mesmer-y mechanic to me. If I could take this as an elite skill with a short enough cd and an instant cast time, I totally would.
What builds specifically do you use?
For a short-term solution though, just try to remember that F4 will briefly counter everything. A free second or two of complete invuln can help you dodge a burst or get your bearings.
I was reading about various thief skills and I found something interesting.
When stealing from a Mesmer a Thief gets the skill “consume plasma” which nets them 10s of Protection, Regeneration, Vigor, Might, Fury, Swiftness, and Aegis, as well as 3s Stability and 5s Retaliation. Could Mimic be used to get all of the boons for ourselves? (Besides the usual usefulness on Guardians and Elementalists of course)
I know this usage is extremely situational even in pvp. But the thought occurred to me because I usually have one spare utility slot(usually for condi cleanse or portal).
What do you think?
Thanks for the answers everyone! The mantra cleanse idea was a godsend!
The hard part is that is seems like practice is the only way to get better so off I go!
Everytime I play sPvP I’ll be having a good time and a longbow ranger will inevitably show up raining arrows into my face. I just can’t find a way to counterplay it(and I’ve tried).
I usually use the GS/Staff shatter build(the old 4/4/0/0/6) in pvp.
Does anyone have any ideas how to counter it? (I know it’s been around for a while but I was playing pve until recently so it didn’t affect me.)
Here’s an idea,
Why don’t we try to nominate a Mesmer Forum specialist ourselves, in advance of Anet, and tell them of our decision? Worst case scenario is that it doesn’t work out and if it does we at least know that the devs listen to us.
This might just be me, but having an elite skill that recharges all mantras if they are off cd seems kind of… useless.
This is probably just a difference in perception, but I have had many, many occasions where I wish I had just one or 2 more charges on my mantras, and I was envisioning an elite mantra to combat this and give the mantra builds more versatility overall through a more creative and intelligent use of mantras. Plus, all mantra builds would have significantly more sustain, which is something i believe mesmers sorely need.
Why not make the time between uses of the mantra on a decent cd like MoD? It doesn’t solve the problem of MoP except eliminating the 9 charge spike.
Firstly, I really like this idea and fully agree that it should be implemented immediately.
However, do you want to force the devs to somehow balance 6 AoE MoP spikes in as many seconds? not to mention the condi clear, stunbreak, and heals.
That assumes it fully charges your other mantras(2 charges, 3 with HM trait) if it just gave each of them one charge it might get closer to balanced, but that would be rather underwhelming in an elite skill.
Maybe one that fully recharged your last used mantra? I know that seems almost useless, but if it gave the mantra full charges again, and the elite wasn’t on a horrible cd it might work better. Besides, refreshing your last mantra seems much more Mesmer-y than just refreshing all of them.
Great idea, but difficult to balance.

How about the skill template system from GW1? Having to completely retrait/reskill between modes or in fractals is slow and annoying.
Quick! get all your pvp in before the hotfixes start!
All Mesmers who are reading this, I wish to urge you all to participate! If we could have enough people for even a top 100 mesmers EU and NA it would be awesome. Plus, now we have a long list of people that scrubs(such as myself) can go to begging for coaching etc.
Bravo Chaos Archangel, Bravo!
You can check out a PvE/WvW boon share interrupt build. It won’t be particularly viable versus bosses (either in dungeon or open world) but it’s a support build, so you’re able to assist your allies in nearly every scenario.
Additionally, since PvP has it’s own traits/gear/runes/sigils, you can set a build and just swap to it on the fly. The only thing to note is that you have to equip the appropriate weapons.
I have no idea where the boon-share interrupt build is, but it’s basically S/F + Staff. You can swap Focus for Torch to get a blast, but you lose out on
somelots of Retaliation.Hmm, that’s true. I have run a boonshare build from Chaos’ post.. Chaos Maestro thread. Will have another look and see how well it can be personalised.
That sort of build can work excellently in PvP and WvW group fights, but you’ll have a bad time in WvW roaming (boon share requires people to share it with of course). Note that in WvW group fights you might miss out on some tagging that you could otherwise get with a more offensive build.
Don’t try to run it in PvE though. Mesmers can’t produce the truly important PvE boons (might+fury), so it’s better to focus on damage and other utility.
Any suggestion on a build that I can run Fay? One whose core concept remains the same but I can tweak for WvW vs PvE vs Dungeons etc?
I’m not Fay(unfortunately) but a Mantra based build could do the trick. The thing though is that of the main build types(Shatter, Support, Phantasm, Mantra, Lockdown, and PU) Shatter, Mantra, and Phantasm all have appropriate modifications for all content and even support and lockdown can be run in organized parties.
Most builds (with a couple tweaks) can be run in a number of situations (Dungeons may be the least build-flexible in this respect). So play whatever you want and have fun doing it.

I think reducing recharges wouldn’t help, we need more of the resource not quicker ways to spend it.
I really like the concept of being able to produce a clone without needing to waste a skill to do it… Dodge-shatters are so clutch!
I could see some alternatives though.
Arcane Transference -Manipulation // Instant- Convert up to 3 boons into clones. 15s CD.
Splitting Images – Master Chaos Tree – Create a clone every time you take up 20% or more damage (5s ICD)
Scepter Clones now produce clones at the end of their attack chain
Shatters Reworked into Hexes, still cost clones. Hexes can be cleansed if there are no other conditions present 3s duration per clone.
F1 – Hex of Suffering: Opponent does [Halting Strikeish] damage to themself for each attack.
F2 – Hex of Bedlam: Opponent radiates AoE Confusion for each attack.
F3 – Hex of Betrayal: Opponent is can be targetted by their allies’ attacks.
F4 – Hex of Misdirection: All incoming attacks miss target Mesmer. (1s per clone. Distortion, essentially.)
Don’t you spout “but.. balance!” at me!
I want this so bad…
Hey Anet! Why not try this next feature patch?
When do these changes go live?
This thread got me thinking,
Could someone post the times/dates/locations of any and all future duels so that less skilled mesmers(such as myself) can come and observe? (with a strict vow of non-interference of course.)
If Anet messed up and Mesmers were temporarily the gods of all they surveyed, what would you do?
This may just be me, but I am completely unable to locate the 5/4/2014 podcast(Episode 24). Could someone please link to it?
Don’t worry about Mesmer. Chaos Archangel, Pyroatheist, Osicat, they’ll find a way.

With the patch that has reworked many of the reliabilities of the Mesmer and Guild Wars 2 in general, does the community have any insight on the following questions:
Which builds are still viable and which new builds have been created?
Any particular combat notes about the patch?
For those below Level 80, how does one manage to make it there with Grandmaster traits so far off?
This thread is geared towards new or very casual players who may not have the insight and necessaries to survive. Please try to provide appropriate answers.
Welcome to why we are all here.
Does anyone still use the 0/20/0/25/25 S/X Mesmer build? I was looking to try it but I couldn’t find anything about it anywhere.
