Fazimodo, I don’t know if you took exception to noblue’s post; however all the rebuttals he makes are valid.

And don’t use juggernaut trait with flamer, it gives you permanent cripple which is completely not worth it even with plus 200toughness.

It gives you on-demand stability, which is great for stomping people.

Great to get kited, with your maximum of 600range and self obtained perma slow.

Your counter argument here is moot if you re-read what he said. Noblue mentioned using the Juggernaut trait for flamer as CC invulnerability when finishing players or when you see an incoming stun or the like. It’s actually very effective as a 0s CD to protect against CC.

How I am dealing with the "Engineer Rage Pandemic"

The tanky Flamethrower build is an idea I’ve often thrown around in my head, and is probably something I would consider if I became consistent with sPvP. However I just can’t go past my Power/Precision/Crit Dmg% build for Rifle/Grenades. Especially since I spend majority of my time farming Karma or crafting materials for selling.

I’m wearing the Vigil armour (Power/Tough/Vit) and filled them with Divinity runes (A cheap stop-gap filler whilst accruing money – stats + crit dmg% each stack of the rune) and my 42k Karma chest and it seems to keep me fairly well alive in WvW engagements, even when I’m drasticly outnumbered or surprise ambushed. I run the following:

  • Med Kit
  • Grenade Kit
  • Goggles
  • Net Turret
  • Supply Drop

This is for both WvW and sPvP. It works for me. It might not for you. I run around with high tough/vit and still maintain 45% crit/46% crit damage. With intelligent traiting and trait slot choices I can’t see how people can lavishly tar engineers are too underpowered. My only gripe realisticly is rifle range and the fact that 3/5 skills are melee range oriented.

My Engineer Woes

Criddifer, I don’t think engineers are too susceptible to damage myself. I play a Lv80 Engineer and I constantly farm Cursed Shore/Frostsound Gorge and while I agree that we aren’t the strongest in terms of damage output or ability to absorb damage, we are given a variety of tools to avoid taking it.

  • Net Turret and/or it’s toolbelt Net skill.
  • Thumper Turret tanks fairly well, and if timed cleverly can use its on-use ability to knock back.
  • Grenade Kit slows
  • Grenade Kit blinds
  • Elixir Gun bouncing slow
  • Practice with using Med Kit and getting quick at Hot-swapping Kits
  • Land Mine aoe slow on proximity or detonation

I also use a trait in Firearms called Infused Precision (Requires only 10 points!) which grants you swiftness and vigor for 10 seconds on a crit! That makes you able to dodge a lot more in PvE leveling.

Should I quit playing my engineer?

Well Wes, I agree with you on a lot of the points you raise in your post. Specifically:

  • Shorter range that what it should be for rifles
  • 3/5 Rifle skills are close range which needs a change.
  • Turrets are inherently too weak, however I don’t think they do nothing. Thumper, Flame and Rocket turrets all perform well.

I would like to see ANet reassess the position engineers are currently in, but I doubt you can expect to see anything to that effect this side of 2 months.

However you go on to say that Grenade/Rifle spec is obligatory. I wholeheartedly disagree. The beauty of the engineer is that you have Grenade kit, Bomb kit, Flame-thrower kit and Tool kit AND can make each and everyone of them work effectively.

Which professions are the most support-oriented?

Mike, try to avoid thinking that in GuildWars 2 you need a specific healer. You were fairly right on the money with the idea of “support”, because at best that’s all you can do; support another player. If they fail to use their dodge mechanic and die then that’s that.

Moving on, in terms of support classes I myself play an Engineer and must say that I love it. I can do almost everything well, but not master it. if you sit down with a class and nut out your own trait build and then map your skill loadout around it I think just about any class can become true support. But at one point or another you will need to bite the bullet and do some “pure dps” as there are some fights that just simply require it.

For ideas on likely support classes I could suggest Engineer (Enemy CC/Limited party healing), Guardian (Party healing/Damage mitigation) or Elementalist (Enemy CC/Party healing).

Roles in GW2

Seems like a decent evaluation of the different (I hate to use the word but suffer for a lack of a better one) roles each class has.

I love the diversity my Engineer has in terms of what I can do on a per fight per loadout basis.

The concept of falling back onto old precepts alarms me greatly in GuildWars 2. As a former WoW player like many the change is a little difficult but a well received one all round.

Playing an Engineer I’ve discovered, much to my amazement (as I forwent playing the beta with my pre-purchase), that I’m a jack of all trades and master of none. I can heal really well for myself and bit for my allies. I can drop condition removal potions and buff circles. I can speed boost. I can chill, poison, burn, bleed, blind, knock back, knock up, you name it. This diversity in ability is wonderful. It’s me playing a medium-armour class being able to perform the rolls of all 3 to a lesser degree.

So if you meet a player who is stuck to the old ways, just kindly take them aside and have a chat with them if you have the time (and if they’re receptive to listening and learning). Show them what abilities their classes have and ways they can use them with each other. The MMO old guard might be resistant to change but that doesn’t make them unable to adapt.

If you’re looking for a cruisy tradeskill to level up fast, try Chef. Not only are the materials fairly prevalent but also alot of them are acquired from the vendors and Karma sellers around the world map.
