Gamescon LAN - Why now?

How many people here have actually followed the eSports scene? I’m not speaking of Guild Wars 2, because in the scope of things, it hardly qualifies. All of our pro players have to hold jobs in order to support themselves. When taking into considering that LoL, DOTA, SC2, even some CS pros can sustain themselves off their game, I would hardly say GW2 has a pro scene at all.

We can all talk until we’re blue in the face as to why GW2 doesn’t measure up in the eSports community. But, when it comes down to it, it all centers around one general idea (lack of care, lack of development). GW2 developers have made no secret that PvP isn’t a priority. However, I almost have to ask as to why the Gamescon LAN all of a sudden? Why fly out players from around the world to compete on a stage that won’t attract much attention outside of our small PvP community? Why devote resources to that when there is so much in the PvP scene that requires attention? I’m a bit thrown off by it all.

I’d venture to say, that the players involved in this tournament would agree that resources should be devoted to improving the PvP. The foundation is set, but its hardly a product worthy of being displayed along side seasoned eSport communities. Its almost counter-productive completely. Not only will there be an extremely small amount of people in our community who are interested, but it will reflect poorly on potential new players looking from the outside in (thats just one of the problems).

I don’t think we’re going to be breaking out into the eSports scene. Lets make what we have better rather than staging a game that isn’t in very good shape for competition.

They could be finding ways to make more viable team comps, new game modes, new maps, better matchmaking, better ladder systems. The game has a ton of potential still for a small cult following of dedicated players. We won’t be topping the charts on twitch.tv anytime soon, even if we got picked up by major lans.

Why devote time and resources to a LAN right now? The resources could be better spent and more universally appreciated if it were devoted toward improvements in the game in itself.

I also thinks its worth noting that I understand they want to show appreciation to the players who’ve been dedicated to the scene. But, I think there are other ways to accomplish that than investing time and resources in a tournament that will do very little for the PvP scene as a whole.

I know I’m ranting here, but I’m curious as to other peoples thoughts.

Thanks!!

Is PvP on autopilot?

Nope, not on autopilot. Nope, not designed by one designer. I Promise features are coming eventually. I want them finished and as badly as you do!

Not to be a jerk or anything. But, what exactly is taking so long to fix the simple issues?

I can understand taking a long time to develop new map pools, game modes, even balance changes. But, what about the easy things like communication (another player mentioned radio commands), removal of Skyhammer, fixing the SoloQ leaderboards.

You seem like a reasonable person. What would you think??

Dueling (outside of arenas). I know its not a game designed for it, but there are enough people who inhabit those duel games that it would be fun.

Why is PvP supposedly "poorly designed?"

I think it simply comes down to lack of support.

I think the messages we receive from anet are just black box recordings that are on a loop from pvp crash. For example “soon, soon, soon…. we are working on it, we are working on it, we are working on it… meetings, meetings meetings…”

Its like the response the cellphone companies gives you when you tell them you have a crappy signal.

The future of Guild Wars 2?

I’ve been playing MMORPGS for as long as I can remember. I don’t think there is a single western title I haven’t played. I’ve yet to find a single MMO without its problems and complaints. It used to bother me. I would be enjoying a game and then go on the forums to hear people complain about this, or that, and it would completely change my perspective of the game. I guess, I was easily influenced by the opinion of others when it came to games. I was always searching for that perfect game. I think Ultima Online is to blame for that, since I will never find a game to fill its shoes. But, I’ve since come to terms with that. My life is very different than it was then and that has a lot to do with how I enjoy games now.

Guild Wars 2 isn’t for everybody. But, it does a number of things very well. The communication with the developers is one of the best on a community level. It may not seem great to some people, but when you compare it to games like Darkfall Online- Its superb. Don’t get me wrong, are there changes I would like to see in the game? Absolutely. I would love to see new guild features and I wouldn’t object to buying an expansion.

What I’m trying to say is from a general perspective, GW2 is a phenomenal MMO when compared to whats out there right now. Its all subjective really. But, I’m really enjoying it.

You would be happy to know that just about all of your points are noted by the Devs and are being worked on. I also like that they inform us on what they’re not currently working on as well. Its a nice change of pace.

How Do YOU Eval Your Performance?

in PvP

I think if you’re a competent pvp’er you can accurately gauge the following:

-Were your rotations good?
-Were your mechanics good?
-Did you capitalize on enemy deficits?
-Did you win the 1v1’s you should have won?
-Did you adequately support your team?
-At any point, were you the reason the enemy took an advantage?

I typically ask myself questions like that for self evaluation. Of course I go more specific, especially against stronger players. It comes not only down to what did I do well, but what did I do to thwart the other good players on the other team?

This is solid.

Is it not a little to late to start?

100% absolutely not. This is the type of game where you can be end game within a few days if you want to be. I wouldn’t recommend it though. I’ve made the mistake of rushing toward the end. This game seems to be more about the journey than where you end up.

But, even when you get to the end you will find a ton of stuff to work toward.

Honestly though? I hop around MMOS quite often and GW2 is probably one of the most active.
