Amphibious NPC Sylvan Hounds, But Not Player?

Like the title, why can NPCs sylvan hound pets swim with them underwater but as players, ours can’t? :/

I’ve been playing a sylvari ranger and really wished my hound could swim with me but he can’t. Then I saw an NPC with one swimming deep underwater with it. Wasn’t quite sure where to put this thread, but it bothered me from a lore perspective so I put it here.

Ranger's bow animation

Honestly I hate the bow animations entirely. GW1 was just fine, where’d that animator go? More than anything I cannot stand how there’s no arrow in your hand or on the bow. I also wish there wasn’t so much whiz effect like you’re firing an arrow powered by a jet engine leaving trails. GW1 was perfect with its bow animations. I’d be more than happy if they literally used them on the new skeletons for the humanoid races. The arrow went on the bow, when it was loosed, it didn’t leave a weird trail. It was nice and simple, realistic even.

Bow Animations

Why is it that neither bow animation actually has the character drawing the string back, but rather the string magically draws itself back to our hand which never moves? I’ve never seen this heavy of a shortcut taken with any animation, especially when animations for other weapon types are so well done. Honestly I primarily use melee weapons when I’m just running around soloing because the bow animations are so …. shrug Unfun and incredibly broken. I actually stopped playing a human ranger, and made an Asura because their animations are slightly different and ever so slightly less bothersome (perhaps because they’re so small).

I know there are more important issues with the game, I’d never say this is critical or anything, but it is bothersome and a turn off.

This is obviously a low priority issue but I thought I would post it as it can be annoying. I’m not trying to say there aren’t bigger worries/issues currently.

Anyway, when walk is toggled on pet walking animations are broken, even without ANY speed buffs on. I changed my build to make sure there was no speed buffs active. This problem is the MOST visible with BIRDS (not Moas). The speed at which the player walks prevents pets from walking correctly. As a result the animations look janky at best. With birds, they do not land, but rather begin to swoop, as though to land and begin walking, but then fly back up into the sky before even touching the ground, repeating this endlessly as long as you’re walking.

I don’t know when walking/running speed changed but when I first started GW2 the birds would walk at my side without any issues, unless I had equipped Signet of the Hunt. With Beastmastery slotted in the passive ability Pet’s Prowess affects their walking animations as well.

My suggestion would be to change walking to a set speed where buffs do not affect walking speed of pets or players.

Yes I hope a dev can update us on the situation as where it stands right now. I bought EOTN a couple weeks ago and was hoping to get the goodies, but alas “Content disabled try back later”

We’re close, seriously.

Oooh, that’s actually really encouraging. I really appreciate something other than “We’re working on it”. I mean it, thank you.

I feel like people with HoM points is a bit more than a niche of the community. I recently decided I wanted the raven and was only a few points away, got it unlocked only to realize I can’t have it. :/

And developing these kinds of tools really shouldn’t take very long. I have only recently returned to the game too, I feel super bad for the people who have been waiting this whole time, geez.

I think the models, textures and bumpmapping on the feline ranger companions are awesome, but it constantly bothers me that they swat at flies with their tail, endlessly. I can see it being an idle animation, but typically cats do not do this like cattle, in fact they would probably be more inclined to bite at pests, than swat at them. Their run animation is kind of ‘eh’ as well. Watch a documentary about cats and observe them when they give chase. Their head does not bob nearly so much as the felines of Guild Wars 2. I would also love to see ArenaNet implement the other feline skins in the Guild Wars 2 world.

Secondly, the shortbow animation, overall, seems a little too simplified. Mainly because the bowstring draws itself to meet your hand.

Thirdly, Krytan Drakehounds ear animations don’t work, like their wolf counterparts and the ears should be a little more upright. Typically dogs with erect ears have them up and at attention, otherwise, the Krytan Drakehound is pretty great, and I think my favorite pet. The canine’s have perfect animations. The brown wolves coat is rather shiny, for a wolf, and the bottom jaws of both wolves is set a little too far back for a realistic looking wolf.

The Juvenile Hawk has a ground animation problem with its tail feathers. They kind of compact and crunch together, making it look almost like a hen.

Lastly, the Rockfur Raccoon, from the Hall of Monuments, has a broken run cycle. It is far too fast and I actually don’t use him because of it, despite playing Guild Wars 1 far more than I ever would have on my own, to get him. This made me very sad, and I’m sure other people have noticed it as well. I would love to see that fixed.

As the title says, these are purely cosmetic, and not at all high priority, lol. I just thought I’d post my observations/opinions. Generally the animations and whatnot wouldn’t bother me if Guild Wars 2 didn’t seem to have a semi-realistic art style. I think whoever did the feline animations needs to reference big cats a little more. Thank you for reading, and thank you ArenaNet for providing Guild Wars 2.

Gonna be honest, I flat out hate this idea. I’m a very huge fan of pets and pet classes. If you don’t want a pet, then don’t play a pet class, bottom line. Think I’d quit the game if I lost my ranger pets.

Okay so I’ve played an amount of the game now. Have a level 80 and a few other characters started. I have a few things I really love, and a few things I think there should be, and some that I dislike.

First thing, the PvP system: The quick matches are really awkward to get in and out of, and it’s too many load screens. The PvP itself feels very strangely balanced and I don’t find it enjoyable. I was fond of the PvP in GW1, and in other games, but not so much this one. WvWvW, while kind of fun, I think doesn’t have enough waypoints spread around because if you die, and you will die, you have to walk a looong way most of the time. The last thing is much more nit-picky. I don’t like that the Hall of Monument pets should be available to any ranger in quick matches.

Okay so Mounts: Some people hate the idea, some people want them. I’m on the fence. On the one hand, yes, there’s fast travel (I don’t like fast travel as a general rule. It feels lazy to me.) but even with the fast travel, not only is that spending your money (for those of you who are lower level, it adds up at 80, costing as much as 4.8-5 silver to travel across the map, and about 1.5 silver to move about 10 feet.) and the zones are quite massive, generally. So if you don’t do what some other games did, and add mounts the size of mountains, and just add small, and simple things like horses, or some fantasy creature of similar size, it wouldn’t be a big deal. I’ve seen the argument that people will sit on NPC’s, making it impossible to target/talk to them. This argument isn’t very valid purely because the characters alone can be large enough to do this with ease. Charr and Norn of course being the primary culprits. So personally, yes I would be in favor of mounts if they’re kept reasonable, and absolutely no flying mounts.

The Content Overall: I think the map is pretty big. I like how big it is. I love how messy the terrain is in some places, makes it feel less ‘developed’ and ‘sterile’ like some games have an issue with. I also like the hearts, vistas, points of interest and just the uncovering of the map. I do not like, however, how perfectly square or rectangular the maps all are. Obviously this isn’t something to be changed on the fly, or even ever. But it may be something to consider with future content updates. I also felt like I was able to progress through everything too quickly. I played pretty casually and hit 80 a few days ago. I didn’t really craft hardly at all, even at 80 I think my highest is barely 100. I also stalled on my personal story, taking time to decide what Order I wanted to join. So leveling seems too easy, to me.

One thing that really bothered me was hats. They all hide your hair. That’s really … lazy. Take that silly cloth thing out of it and just put hair underneath. I really loved the pirate hats and things except for it adds a stupid cloth around your head and cuts all your hair off.

I think there need to be big content updates. Unlock all those surrounding areas as you progress, add more things in the gem store, like recustomizations and such. More armor transmute sets. Weapon transmutations would be cool. Mostly zones and story lines and maybe even future prestige classes. I have heard a lot of people say they want Dervish back.

So yeah. That’s what I can think of right now. Feel free to respond/discuss, etc.
