Contacted support and now I am even more confused and also a little irritated.
GM Daystar was kind enough to reply. But he made it that there are no freebies or anything for those who already own the existing game.
“…If you purchase a Deluxe or Ultimate Edition of Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns you will get an additional character slot, if you don’t want the additional character slot you can purchase the Standard Edition. Please be informed that we don’t give any discounts or special offers to those players that already have the Guild Wars 2 Core game. Please make sure to visit our website for the latest news and other information….”
Basically, if I understand things correctly…
They are giving away the complete core game for free with the HoT expansion.
If you already have the core game, you pay the same price, but get only the expansion.
You can’t defend your homeland in WvW anymore unless you pay for HoT to play on the new BL maps.
Is this true, or am I misunderstanding what’s being given away for free and the restrictions on WvW BLs?

After reading about this, I’ve decided not to pre-purchase. I’m just going to wait for a sale.
I just really don’t want a free character slot. I’ve already purchased enough of them, years ago. I wish there was a way for them to keep the slot and apply the $10, or whatever it costs, to the purchase price of the expansion. Hell, even just giving me a credit of gems equivalent to the cost of a character slot would let me go get something from the store that I actually want.
And it’s not just about price or fair exchange of value either. I’ve spent WAY more in the gem store supporting GW2 as a long time player and a fan. It could be argued I’ve paid WAY too much for it already, certainly far more than a subscription fee. But I did it because I love the game and enjoyed the content.
Perhaps I was a fool to think there’d be some kind of discounted upgrade option for existing/loyal core game customers. I guess it really is just about hype and profit now. At least, that’s how it seems to me.
There were some people who got 800 (? I think, it’s been a while) gems and the char slot removed after contacting support about it. You could always discuss it with support.
Oh REALLY?
Now, this may change things for me. I will contact support to confirm before I spend any money. If they say yes, then I would be MUCH happier with being able to pick what I want as an existing customer freebie.

Haven’t logged in to comment in a long time because I haven’t had a reason to. But nearing the HoT release I am ready to purchase. But…I find myself puzzled about something…
If I understand the pre-purchase options correctly…
This seems odd since most companies offer the upgrade only to people who already have the game. At least, I don’t see a way to buy just the expansion.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to buy the expansion as an upgrade only? And if so, what do I need to do? Is this info in an FAQ somewhere, because I’m not finding it.
Thanks.
PS – I originally paid something like $60 for pre-purchasing the Digital Deluxe core game. I have also purchased hundreds of dollars worth of goodies from the In-game store. So these questions are coming from a long time player who financially supports the game he loves.

Indeed, i didnt mention the CPU becouse its fine, infact its ‘almost’ the best u can ask for from AMD, as much as i always recommend Intel CPU’s like the 3570k or 3770k, if som1 has chosen atleast a FX8k series AMD, i wont try change there mind, becouse the FX8k series, specialy the FX8320 and FX8350 are close enough to the 3570k in single thread performance when OC’d that, so long as ur not after the best of the best, will be fine.
True story!
The Vishera cores are much better than the old Bulldozers and will run with the Intels in multithreaded apps. Just wish GW2 would make better use of multiple cores on that rendering pipeline. That would be good for everyone.
I’ve seen this happen before and it seems to be related to anti-aliasing and alpha blending the transparent textures for the smoke.
Try setting your AA mode to performance rather than quality and see ifthat has any impact.
I’ve seen a similar problem since around the same time…the 8bit April 1 Super Adventure Box update…and cannot narrow it down to cause.
My crash has scrambled/scrolling video and sound stutter that completely locks windows and forces a cold boot. So no error report code so far. :/
No hardware/software changes on my end and only GW2 is crashing.
The problem may not be your video card or CPU or drivers.
Whether running an Intel or AMD CPU the render engine currently won’t max more than 1 core. To see my point, fire up Task Manager and MSI Afterburner in the background. You’ll see 1 CPU core close to max (that’s where the render engine is running), and maybe 2 more cores at 20-40%. You’ll also see your video card at maybe 40-50% usage, but not maxed.
The bottleneck is coming from being single-core bound.
For GW2, Intels will be a better performer at present because they have higher single-core performance. If Anet changes the rendering engine to make better use of multiple cores (* no small task), then everyone should see much better performance, higher CPU and video card utilization and smoother frames.
NO! You (ANet) are going back on your word! SHAME ON YOU!
I’m not going to grind out for better gear and transmute my armor again for a 2 point stat carrot and a coutnermeasure to some newly contrived game mechanic. Skill should more than make up the difference anyway, unless this gimmicky mechanic cannot be avoided by skill and now we are required to upgrade. What is more, your PAX panels and blog posts told us we wouldn’t have to do things like this. Yet here we are.
I’m sure I’m not the only person here who feels duped and betrayed.
I just hope you will all listen when we, your dedicated fans, passionately explain our push against this type of change, because:
1) It’s the first step in a gear-centric grind culture. Please don’t take any more! Just stop here, and don’t do it again.
2) This whole concept has ALREADY been done in GW1 with infusion. It was a PITA and got in the way of natural progression more than enhanced the depth of the game. WHY bring this back?
3) You do NOT need to create a whole new gear tier to combat the new ‘Agony’ mechanic. A new upgrade item that offers 2 of the normal stats + Agony resistance would work just fine.
4) We don’t need another gear carrot. What we need are more bugfixes, balance tweaks, and more permanently dead bots. Please, continue to focus your efforts on perfecting and cleaning up the existing game first. Then move on to adding more to it.
5) If you really want to add more creative gear and features, some better alternatives could be:
– More cool armor and weapon skins, maybe even in the gem store? I know I’d buy em!
– New places to explore, hidden vistas to find, jumping puzzles, events and short stories to experience
– A way to gift gems or gem purchases to friends
– A way to play more than just dungeons with friends on another server
– Now that our preferred servers are not all FULL, how about a way to move an entire guild without losing all influence/upgrades?
Now, I realize this is your IP and you can do whatever you want. But I hope you understand that if I didn’t care about the quality of your game or the credibility of your collective reputation I wouldn’t be writing any of this.
We love GW2 for the beauty and quality of the world, enjoyable gameplay, challenge, skill and the unique features you have chosen to implement. That is why we are freaking out over this concept of a new gear tier. It’s ANTI-GW2.
I agree with the OP. The trait is more for goofing off and fun than practical use. Yes, it has a potential yet very limited use in PvP. But to me it simply isn’t worth the required trait investment, risk, and time to get set up and in position to fire it off. :/
Yes, it would be nice if it were a little more useful. But on the other hand, I do LOVE the funny/fun side of this for PvE. Nothing beats seeing someone fall next to you, make a crater on impact, stand up, dust off, shout ‘I meant to do that’ and run off.
Maybe do what they did in Guild Wars 1, and have DFA work differently in PvE and PvP:
- PvE: Fall damage reduction and knockback with no damage to enemies.
- PvP: Fall damage reduction, knockback & either daze OR criple nearby enemies for 3s + give you adrenaline or something as a boon for 5s.
I think this would be a ‘best of both’ solution and make it really make the reward for using it worth the risk/investment in the trait slot.

If it’s for your first guild join, I would agree with this.
But representing works well when multi-guilding and is a pretty simple solution for that function.

Bots would not exist if players would stop buying gold from them. So ultimately, part of the demand is player-created. But it can be resolved because the majority of players are legit.
Keep reporting them and gold sellers.
A-Net staff will catch up.
