Deathly Chill too strong in WvW

I do think Deathly Chill is too strong (at least, in small groups), but I wouldn’t nerf the number of bleed stacks. I just think they should be applied after the chill application, not before.

It’s too difficult to clear the bleeds when you don’t have a “clear all”, especially if you get CC’d in a spin to win w/o a stunbreak. More than 1 condi necro and it’s near impossible if you can’t quickly shut them down at the same time you’re being pressured by other enemies.

I ended up changing my build to stack as much condi duration reduction as I can get in the hope I stay alive long enough to shed the junk condis then clear bleeds. I’ve kitten myself a little against other fights, but w/ the amount of condi in the game now, I guess it’s the only option.

Magolith… that’s only true about the falling IF you are in their territory. In your own zone you can still knock the enemy off and watch them plummet and splat on the ground below

Yea, I know that. The nature of us havocing is that we’re typically in enemy territory though. That’s not a deal-breaker for me though.

Not being able to even try stopping people from getting in is what I hate.

Gliding, what a shambles

I was on the fence about gliding, but I don’t think that I really like it even though it has some advantages.

It certainly screws over me and my friend’s little 2-man havoc group. It’s impossible to even attempt to stop enemies from getting in and sieging NWT, NET, SET (assuming they own Hills), so why even bother trying unless the map is dead.

I haven’t tried, but this may even be applicable to SWT gliding from the ruin as well.

Also gone are the days I can push somebody off a cliff. Now they just glide away. Boo.

I’m partially color blind and would prefer having an option for differently patterned lines instead of animated or thin/thick. I personally wouldn’t want blinking lines.

The green/red objective markers are bad enough, let alone thin colored lines (especially on desert bl’s minimap).

I wonder if this is what I encountered the other night. I was dueling a BG S/P thief on one of the alpine BLs (cant remember which).

Several times, his pistol whip animation was happening about 600-900 away and damaging me, then he’d appear next to me only around when it ended.

I thought maybe there was a trick (I have about 1.5k hrs on thief and wasn’t aware of it), but I couldn’t replicate w/ a friend. Chalked it up to lag, but I had never seen it happen like that before.

just wondering, do you guys think zerk builds 1 shotting ppl should be nerfed too?

Power (and condi) creep as a whole needs to nerfed. But, I doubt that will ever happen.

I do enjoy 1 shotting ppl w/ a glass mesmer, but it does require somewhat precise setup and uses a lot of CDs. If the burst fails for any reason, I’m usually at a big disadvantage assuming the target isn’t a baddie.

I’d be ok with burst damage being toned down only if we were compensated with better sustained damage. Power mesmer is already difficult enough to play well compared to condi mesmer and most other classes. The last thing it needs is to be nerfed w/o being equally compensated elsewhere.

Try Scepter/Shield + Sword/Torch + Baelfire Runes if running condi. Insp 2/2/1, Illus 3/3/3, Chrono 2/2/3. Healing Mantra, Decoy, Blink, Mirror Images, Mass Invis.

Running power is hard mode (imo). Condi is a more forgiving playstyle. I still vastly prefer power over condi, but yes, you will be squishy and dealing with 1vX will generally be more difficult than w/ condi.
Try Scepter/(Sword, Shield, or Focus) + Sword/Shield if running power. All marauder w/ a couple zerk trinkets. Insp 2/2/1, Illus 2/1/3, Chrono 2/2/3. Healing Mantra, Decoy, Blink, Mirror Images, Mass Invis.

I only use GS anymore if I feel like running a pure glass GS + Sw/Torch burst build. I mostly prefer Scepter/XX over GS otherwise.

Here’s a hybrid I’ve been toying with lately (solo roaming & 2s). It’s pretty fun and has a few trait adjustments that can be made to suit your preference. Sig of Illusions and offhand sword are flex. I often swap between offhand sword, focus, torch depending on the situation.

I like this build because it’s easy to swap a couple traits, trinkets & food if I feel like running full power. I don’t have to worry about keeping multiple ascended armor/weapon sets.

Fun Roaming Builds

I have thousands of hours on mesmer. I personally have not enjoyed any variation of many pure condi builds that I’ve tried. I’m running a hybrid right now that I’m having quite a bit of fun with.

But, it doesn’t matter what I or anyone else enjoys. It’s what you enjoy. Get some exotic Dire gear and try it out for a while. If you like it, you can start crafting some of the (very) expensive ascended Trailblazer pieces.

Chrono builds wvw help

I run full marauders & it’s fine for both zerg surfing and roaming. The extra HP helps avoid being downed by a stray 13k CoR + a couple random attacks. You still have to be careful of positioning & react quickly, but have a little extra leeway compared to full zerker. You won’t be offering much support and you won’t be frontline, so if that’s your thing you should gear differently.

Full zerker works too, but if you’re mostly zerg surfing without somebody watching your back, I don’t really recommend it if you’re new to mesmer. You have to be extremely careful with positioning and avoiding attacks, vs just being “really careful” with marauders.

- I usually swap out grav well for mass invis when roaming. Grav well is nice, but so is having the escape that mass invis provides.

- Food: The 10% DR food would arguably be better, but I’m too lazy to craft it.

- Shield: It’s still good, and nice to have for tight spots. I haven’t been running it much lately though.

- Focus (zerging): I often run it over shield (swapping back and forth often) when zerg surfing just to pull people off walls or out-of-position open-field. Also, the new immob projectile on #5 has gotten quite a few people killed that were out-of-position for a couple seconds too long, letting other gank take advantage.

- Focus (roaming): I don’t really like it when solo roaming, as it doesn’t quite provide enough pressure/defense compared to other options. The CC (both #4 and #5) can be handy in duo roaming though to give your friend more opportunity to do damage.

- Sword off-hand (zerging): Use a shield or focus instead.

- Sword off-hand (roaming): I actually really like this for both solo & duo roaming. #4’s ~5k crit counterattack is nice against most classes. #5 phantasm hits pretty hard (and you get it twice w/ chronophantasma). There are situations where having a shield (or even focus) is better, but I’ve been primarily running sword off-hand and enjoy it.

- Torch (zerging): I’d rather run focus or shield.

- Torch (roaming): It shines better here. Good if you can hide an upcoming burst (especially if you’re full zerker and think you can 1-shot the person), and good for buying time in a fight or escaping.

Can anybody explain why this was necessary?

Illusionary Reversion: Increased required illusions shattered to 3.

- I only roam/duo WVW and I only run power builds.
- I can see this hurting condi mesmer (a little)
- Combined w/ the seaweed food nerf, I think this actually a pretty significant hit to power mesmer for longer fights. I don’t feel like the phantasm or the other changes make up for it.

Both builds in the OP are viable. The marauder+illusions build is better in general for dueling, roaming, & shorter small-scale fights. The commander+dueling mantra build is usually better for larger and/or longer fights and the armor set also works if you want to run a boonshare build.

Usually, no. You have several active defenses that help mitigate your squishiness.

Mursaat backpack not visible w/ stowed shield

I haven’t actually had my backpack visible for years, so I wasn’t aware of this.

I bought the Mursaat backpack thinking it would look cool behind my shield, but the backpack does not appear when the shield is stowed.

So, in case you’re like me… that’s something to be aware of.

Need Help with Roaming Build

I would:

- Swap out Mantra of Distraction for Blink. 1) MoD is not that useful with all the stab typically found in WvW. 2) Blink is extremely useful for escaping, buying yourself a few seconds, and/or catching somebody.
- Swap out Gravity Well for Mass Invis. It can help you (and friends) escape when needed and it buys you time for skill recharge and/or burst setup.
- Put an energy sigil on both weps.
- I wouldn’t run Mantra of Recovery without running Dueling w/ Harmonious Mantras. Ether Feast instead.
- I don’t usually have problems with condis, so I would swap out Mantra of Resolve for Mirror Images or another situational utility. Having the extra stun break is nice, as is the quick 2 clones (sometimes handy for a quick burst.)
- Change Persisting Images to Medic’s Feedback when running with others.

Yeah, I’m sure you see some mesmers running around with a bar full of mantras, but to people that know the class, that’s essentially a big target over their head saying ‘inexperienced/bad player here , kill me first!’

I don’t remember seeing a single mesmer in WvW over the past few years running a full bar of mantras. Quit exaggerating.

I personally run MoR + MoP most of the time if I’m running with a small-group, and I’m far from an inexperienced/bad player. The fact that they aren’t affected by CS is just a non-issue for me. They work well enough as is.

Marauder armor + zerk trinkets are pretty good for roaming & small-group. It works ok if you’re tagging on to a zerg fight if you position well & don’t catch too many stray CoR’s.

For larger groups & zerging in general, I run Commanders armor w/ durability runes + zerk trinkets. It gives me a bit more sustain & I still do decent enough damage to hurt those who get out of position.

Since basically nobody uses mantras, they figured it was easier to ignore it than actually fix it.

They weren’t wrong. I’ve seen maybe 3 complaints about this since HoT launched.

“Basically nobody”? I roam & small-group as a mesmer in WvW pretty much daily and I’ve seen quite a few other mesmers there that run mantras.

The # of complainers on the forums isn’t exactly the best metric to determine how many people use a skill type. Most players probably just accept the functionality for what it is. Complainers only really come out in numbers if something feels really broken.

By “bulldoze”, I will assume you are talking about shatter burst mesmer.

While it’s true that a full burst can insta-down some classes and get others low, it’s just not going to happen against any decent player that a) sees it coming, b) can sustain it, and/or c) outsmarts you.

Shatter burst mesmers are at a disadvantage in many 1v1s & even-numbered fights. Their primary role is +1’ing fights with some element of surprise, and it’s where a decent player can shine. Played well, it is supposed to be able to turn the fight quickly by bursting somebody who’s already in some trouble. So, maybe that’s why you think mesmers can bulldoze others?

This week is ending up as it is from lack of player participation. I’m actually really surprised how poorly a lot of WvW players responded to this week. Players already raged quit before reset even began. Other players rage quit after an hour or two after reset. The effects of having less and less players to fight just snow balled the rage quitting from there. The simply solution is to man up and get back on map! So what, we have a lot of Golems, that doesn’t prevent open field fighting. We have the Golem buff issue, which again, is a so what? Just everyone pop it and we’re all on an even playing field again.

I’m one who spends most of his time in WvW, and most of that time for fights only. Here’s how this week went down for me:

Day 1) A few small fights here and there. A few zerg v zerg fights here and there. It’s fun the first few times. Starts getting boring when I realize how sluggish golems are (especially alphas) in any real fight not involving a door. K-Train is ramping up.

Day 2) K-Train is on it’s way. Begin seeing people with the overcharge buff that aren’t in golems. Getting annoyed.

Day 3) Number of people abusing the overcharge buff increases seemingly exponentially. Still pretty much 100% k-train. Super annoyed.

Day 4) Same crap. ArenaNet is remaining silent. I’ve given up this week and lost a lot of faith in ANet. Definitely not purchasing HoT until it’s on sale dirt cheap way in the future.

It’s not for lack of people.

Matchmaking Changes: 12/5

I hope whatever changes are going to be made will really help.

The past week has been somewhat frustrating, but tonight really put the icing on the cake. Tonight was 3 wins and 11 losses in ranked arena, which has kind of soured my taste for pvp.

I admit, I make my share of mistakes in rotating and picking battles, but I do fairly well in most matches. Just not enough to carry.

To recap tonight:
- I had 2 or 3 close games
- I had several matches against premades where my team just got stomped around (e.g. 500-20 on Khylo). Disappointing, but it doesn’t happen too often.
- 1 match where a player goes AFK about 3/4 through the match.
- 1 match on Temple of the Silent Storm where a player gives up about half-way through, sits around base, and trash talks the team. We were losing, but not bad enough that it couldn’t be turned around.
- The rest of my matches usually consisted of bad comps and 1-3 new(ish) players that 1) did not know how to rotate 2) had little situational awareness, usually leading to 3) they just get downed by the enemy in a matter of seconds.
