I’ve been around for about 8 months now on this game and have enjoyed the pvp aspect of it. I started out on thief and have since practiced each of the other professions. I have basically started practicing a new profession every time one of them destroys me. I want to understand each profession and really learn the mechanics to get better at pvp.
For the past while I have just been avoiding mesmers because I honestly don’t know how they work and every time I go up against one they kill me. Well almost every time. I’m sure there are some truly atrocious mesmers that I have killed. So, I decided that it is time to learn mesmer. I went to meta battle and tried out the chronophantasma and chrono power shatter builds, but can’t seem to do nearly the same burst as I have seen used on me multiple times. I seem to survive okay, but I am having trouble killing enemies. There is clearly something I am not understanding.
I also tried searching on YouTube. There are a bunch of videos, but some are old and others are just compilations of mesmers destroying people. That is fun to watch and all, but I can’t really see what is happening or the build.
I am going to try to describe what I am seeing as mesmers attack me. I am sure I am seeing multiple different builds, but I can’t really tell them apart. I’m going to put it in a bullet list:
- in almost every situation I see mesmers port around a lot and clones appear. Is this staff 2? I know they have blink, but they seem to do it pretty often.
- some of the time they seem to stealth pretty often. I know torch has a stealth and there is a utility skill that has stealth (decoy?)
- some put a ton of conditions on me that seem to burst pretty hard (is this the chronophantasma?)
- some just straight up seem to burst me from 100-0 in like 2 seconds even when I am using an amulet with vitality. I figure this is one of the burst shatter builds.
- they also seem to interrupt and stun me repeatedly in quick succession. This seems to come from the ones that use power over conditions.
These have been my observations. As I said before, I am guessing that is multiple different builds. I am interested in learning the super burst build, but can’t quite figure it out.
I’m sure this has been asked several times so feel free to point me to a different thread or better yet a YouTube video that explains it. Or respond to this post.
I would greatly appreciate it if the Mesmer community could teach me the Mesmer burst buld and maybe also the condition build and how it actually works.

If free to play player is in platinum, then he has the skills to be in platinum. Dont blame others for your loss or lack of skills.

Maybe, but more often than not that’s not the case. A new player can luck out in placement games, go 6-4 and get placed in platinum.
How does this happen. I won 7 and lost 3 out of my placement matches. I am new to the game. Have only played since like November 2016. I got placed in bronze 2. Not that I’m complaining. I’m new. I don’t have the skills necessary to be in platinum and have no right to be there. I’m just wondering how does another new person only win 6 and end up in platinum?
I use staff mainly for dodge / vault spam, then I also take SB for mobility.
I find vault spam too easy to dodge. I like using auto, #2, and #3 mostly. I do like using vault like the other guy said for when someone is attempting a Revive or if I know I can get a couple people at once.
As far as shortbow vs staff: from My short experience it seems to comes down to mobility/utility vs more damage. I think shortbow is better for getting to points quicker. still I like staff better than shortbow and dagger pistol. Probably not as effective, but I like it better.
I am not super experienced yet as I’ve only been playing for a few months. Even so, I would suggest taking a look at metabattle.com. I’ve used that to give me a start on builds I wanted to test.
When I run dagger pistol I use:
Rune of the scholar
Sigil of air and sigil of fire (they both have damage procs)
Channeled vigor
Signet of agility (I like this for the precision bonus and extra endurance refill)
Bandits defense (mainly for cc break)
Shadow step
Impact strike (I personally like the better than basilisk venom)
Honestly I pretty much always use those utility skills unless I am using a condition build. I will swap out for daredevil and Valkyrie sometimes if I use staff, but a lot of the time will still stick with scholar and marauder with staff. I personally have more success using staff.
That’s just my experience though. I’m sure some more experienced people will chime in.
I have a question about spvp. From what I have read I have gleaned that it puts everyone at level 80 stats, but does it take into account stat distribution between power, vitality, ferocity, toughness, precision, condition, etc? For example, if I go into pvp with a full set of berserker gear will I have the same stats as if I go in with a full set of soldiers gear? Or is it just a gear rating equalization and the stat distribution depends on the gear you are wearing?
I haven’t done spvp yet, but it is something I’m very interested in starting. I leveled a thief about up to level 60 something by questing around the different maps and then from 60 something to 80 doing wvw. So I have a rudimentary idea of some basic mechanics. I also boosted a ranger to level 80. I’m pretty sure the 80 booster put my ranger in soldiers gear. Say I bought a full set of exotic berserker gear. Would my stats be the same going into spvp with either set? Or would they just have same rating, but berserker lean toward less health and higher damage and soldiers lean towards more health and less damage?
Hopefully my question makes sense.

This is what I have used for the mmos I have played. Way back in my mmo days I just clicked. Then I learned to keybind using a normal keyboard. Night and day difference. Then I bought a g600 and it was night and day difference again. Very good investment indeed.
Well thanks all for the advice. I went and tested each of them in the silver wastes and decided to go with ranger. It’s been a lot of fun so far and seems to fit my play style decently.

I don’t need the strongest class or anything like that. Just one that functions fine and is bursty as that is what I like. I will look more into guardian and ranger.
Do you have to buy character slots or can they be earned?

A little background. I just started playing this game a few weeks ago as F2P and just bought it yesterday because I was having fun with it. Up until then I had played SWTOR for the past 4.5 years ish. I got really into the community there, but alas decided to move on.
I started this game by playing theif because it was the closest thing to the class I played a lot in swtor. I’m hoping to get some advice from people that have played that game. I’m wondering what to use my level 80 boost on. I typically don’t like using boosts like that, but since I have it I will use it.
I’m wondering what profession people think I should get. For reference if you know swtor my favorites were operative, marauder, and mercenary. So basically high burst and kiting. I want to get a taste of the different professions before I commit the level boost to it. What level should I level a profession up to to test it? At one point can I get a fairly good feel for the profession? 20, 30, 50, etc.
If any of you have played swtor: any recommendation on a second profession to start on using the above 3 classes as reference? At first I thought warrior because it seems close to a marauder, but then the weapon system kinda throws those comparisons out of whack from what I can tell, but maybe not.
Some nit picky things that aren’t super important. For ranged burst I’d like to use longbow over something like staff or rifle if possible. Would that be better as ranger or dragon hunger? Or something else entirely.
Melee burst: I also liked knives, but already have a thief. I prefer to dual wield if possible. I like kiting/evading tactics rather than just stand there and take hits with strong defenses.
Anyway, I always asked people to ask more specific questions so I could give them more specific advice. If my questions and background are too general if you could lead me into relevant questions or background I can provide more detail to get better responses.
Another bit of background: in swtor I purely played pvp and only pvp as I hated the pve in that game with a passion. So far exploring the world and the events in this game has made pve pretty fun, which surprises me. Normally, I’d only care if the class function to some degree in pvp, but I’d like to have fun in both pvp and pve.
