I have to say that I am so impressed with Arenanet’s tenaciousness. Despite the constant stream of negativity and whining thrown their way (typical of the MMO community I know and love), it is clear that they are still going ALL IN to become the best MMO on the market (if it isn’t already). Why is this somewhat unusual? Because we have all seen big MMO development companies literally give up on their MMO mere months after release (usually their financial handlers, focused on short term gains, pull the plug on a promising MMO because it doesn’t garner the homogenous praise and financial outcomes the company expects). Keep up the good work, Arenanet, and keep fighting for our love. You have already earned my respect.
This just in – OP exclusively plays overpowered classes, tries underpowered class and is now concerned about future ability to mindlessly faceroll other classes.
Okay, this has got to be the most passive-agressive and manipulative approach to creating another Ascended gear whine thread I have seen. Were you worried that a more direct post (like “Acended Gear Bad = I’m quitting”) would have just been ignored? Devs, please just consolidate this post into the trashheaps of posts about the same subject.
So let me break this down. You came to the forum to rage on Arenanet about their recent Ascended gear decision and had planned on threatening them with the prospect of player attrition. However, upon further reflection, you realized that the post would probably just get deleted anyway, so being the creative person you are, you whipped up this thread to accomplish the same goal but under the radar. Sound about right?

2 HOURS A DAY ?
Ok fine if you are a school kid with nothing to do, or a student or unemployed.
Obviously you have made choices in your life that don’t allow you to invest a couple of hours a day into your personal interests. Fine. But to call those of us who do have reasonable personal time “school kids” or “unemployed” just comes off as jealous and bitter. I am a very busy professional person with major responsibilities, have two homes to care for, lots of friends, a spouse and dogs, but I have made choices in my life (like education and choosing not to have kids) that have allowed me to travel, explore the world around me, and….wait for it……devote up to two stinkin’ hours of my day toward doing something that relaxes me and gives me enjoyment. Wow, what a novel and wicked concept! Sometimes I use the time for reading or hiking rather than video games (it depends on the time of year and my mood), but it doesn’t matter what I do with the time, I have it available because I have structured it that way. I’m sorry you weren’t able to do the same.
I’ve got some nice exotic 80 rings to sell to you. Only 2.5g piece. Do you want them?
It doesn’t really matter all that much in this game.
For those of you who hate the Ascended gear idea, quit using the excuse that “casuals will be disenfranchised” as your primary argument. Let’s be honest, casuals are very well taken care of in this game, and that will not change with the addition of Ascended gear. In fact, I am a very casual player and even I like having something to work toward at lvl 80.
Considering GW2 is so respectful of casuals as it is, and given that Arenanet is imminently aware of their own game design philosophy (so quit acting as if they have forgotten….they haven’t), why are you all being so dramatic and acting as if all casuals will just have to pack their bags and move on to some other game? Arenanet has found a very balanced solution to the age old MMO battle of the hard cores vs. the casuals – They have provided tons of casual-friendly content (most content, in fact) that will NOT suddenly disappear with Ascended gear while at the same time they are throwing a bone to the hard core players among us. This seems like a balanced and innovative approach to me. Looking forward to the implementation of this concept in GW2!
Simply amazing.
Absolutely. But I am not sure it is worth my time to continue. We shall see how the game shakes out here in the next month.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. At this point in my life my time is worth more than $60 and I am wondering whether or not I should invest my limited amount of “hobby time” into this game or another MMO that has more going on at level cap. Tough decision.
I absolutely love this game for many reasons……but endgame content seems a bit thin to say the least. Why didn’t Arenanet basically just tell players that there really wasn’t an endgame rather than all of the verbal gymnastics that we got instead (ie. “The game IS the endgame”…blah..blah.). I think a lot of people still would have bought an endgameless (is that even a word?) game, especially because of the lack of subscription fee. I did my homework and I got what I expected. However, the language they used prior to release gave me the impression that longevity beyond level 80 was important to them, and gave me hope that there actually would be something to do after level 80 (not raids, which is fine by me). Oh well, I love the game for what it is.
Please note: I am absolutely not saying that Anet lied to me. Quite the contrary, actually, they are one of the most honest development companies I have encountered. However, I do think they would have saved themselves (and some players) a lot of grief if they would have been more blunt on this point.
