I played the PoF demo on my 2016 MacBook Pro (base model) and noticed a solid 30fps frame rate with decent graphics settings when I played the story, but as soon as I moved to areas with more players the framerate dropped significantly to about ~5 fps.
This happens even if the character model limit is at its lowest.
If no other player is in my frame the game runs really smooth
I attach my graphics settings – its pretty decent, looks really good.

Hi, my friend has an old account that he opened on a server different than mine and we’d like to play together (with guilds and wvw).
My server appears to be full (piken).
I have two questions:
1. Can he move to a full server by paying gems?
2. If he buys the game again (lets say for the expansion), can he join a full server?
Thanks

Improving class dummies at heart of the mists

Just an idea…
If you already have the “default build” mechanism why don’t the class dummies at heart of the mists use it?
Would be more relevant practicing on a dummy that runs the default build rather than the vanilla.

Can you tone down the content of loot bags?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mapisto.2154

I find myself spending 15 mins just opening bags and salvaging/selling whats inside.
Every bag contains another bag and the loot is kind of irrelevant for a veteran level 80 player.
The majority of us are level 80 and playing end-game content.. I don’t think any of us find the loads of blue/green gear useful.
It just takes a lot of space in the inventory and you have to clean it up very often.
Can you tone it down a little bit?

Huh really? Do you think you can fight any of those 3 classes on a point with an ele? a necro? a rev? a mesmer?

So let me get this straight…. thieves want to :

- Be the fastest ever
- Be the best engager/disengager
- Be able to counter everybody
- Be able to run away from anywhere and anything
- Be able to fight on points, holding them also

Ok got it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2ugIT68LTs

shall we delete the rest of the classes? it would make no sense to keep them in

First, chill.
You did not get it straight because you are exaggerating.
I didn’t ask for any buff in my post that is your interpretation. I asked for balanced challenge vs reward.
There IS a problem and I presented it very clearly – don’t know what the solution should be (if it is buffs or nerfs or rework for all classes like some of you suggested here), the devs probably know better than me.

I feel like some of you didn’t read or misunderstood what I said.
I love thief I think its the most fun to play class in the game, and yes, I can say I’m a good thief. Don’t have problem winning matches with the highest rank as thief and I don’t need your advice on how to play thief.
The post is about the unbalanced challenge vs reward in PvP for different classes.

I seriously don’t see the “big reward” some of you are buzzing about. Thief that tries his best will get a kill, while other classes that try less will likely get more kills. I know because I played them (as written in the post). Also bad thief and good thief will get the same reward if the team wins so there is no big reward for trying harder. If you wanna get to legendary its easier to do it with other classes.

For all pro thieves that give me advice, please, try playing with other classes in meta build and I promise you’ll get what I mean.

Thief compared to other classes

in PvP

Mapisto.2154

Just wanted to share with you and hear your thoughts about this.

I have a thief as main class for 3 yeas and I love the class.
I played a lot of matches with my thief and got really good at it. It took me a really long time to control this class in PvP and win, also I took my time figuring out builds and tactics and studied this class a lot.
I started with the ascension achievement – so I needed to win ranked matches with other classes.
Heard two weeks ago about a site called metabattle that posts the ‘meta’ builds for the season – so I made a meta druid and meta warrior just to get on with this achievement.
I had no experience whatsoever with warrior and druid in pvp, and yet I never lost a match.
Also I had the highest rank in all of them.

The months of effort I put in getting good at thief was concluded to 10 minutes in metabattle with druid and warrior.
Also the ‘meta’ thief build that’s in this site is equally challenging to all my previous thief builds.

It was absurdly easy to win 1 vs many with bunker druid, or guard a point with war. No challenge whatsoever.

My conclusions are:
A. Thief is an inferior class. You can practice a lot with thief and get really good, and still it is very plausible that you will lose to a player that plays meta druid with little experience. Other classes are just too easy to win with. Gets you wondering why would you play thief in pvp.

B. Meta buids ruin the game. When I played with the meta classes, I noticed that a majority of my opponents are running the same builds. No diversity, not creative, not surprising – boring.

Agreed.
Even when I face large groups of enemies i prefer using staff or d/d because they are faster and deal more damage and can hit multiple targets.
SB seem to be too clumsy for damage dealing.

in Thief

Posted by: Mapisto.2154

There are no traits that buff shortbow, the attacks are really slow – even with quickness (compared to ranger’s SB skills), and it is a two handed weapon – which I use only for the fifth skill.
I don’t get why would I need a two handed “utility” weapon.
Is it viable in some way for dps?

I get it, sometimes there are connection issues, happened to me a few times,
but it really takes the fun out of the match if the disconnected player doesn’t log back.
And you cant get out either, you are stuck in a boring match till the opposite team wins.
Its not fun for both sides. You can not win with 4 players against 5.
You CAN fix this issue.
Is it possible if a player is disconnected for a long time (X minutes) you would replace him with a player that waits in the queue? (ask him first, but you get the idea)

Will be allot more fun and fair.

The writing in HoT story (spoilers)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Mapisto.2154

Mapisto.2154

Although I love the combat and graphics of this game, I’m sad to say the personal story mechanics, writing, and overall direction is GW2’s weakest element. Take a look at some top tier story game designers out there, and you understand how far below the bar GW2 is in terms of story craft. Bioware (almost any game), ESO, The Secret World, even WoW, are far more invested in story than GW2. Bioware in particular are masters of story craft and understand what makes stories compelling.

In terms of writing and plot, one of the core things Gw2 hasn’t really grasped in making stories compelling are the concepts of relationships and crisis for your character. When we face crisis and fail, we must redeem ourselves. When we build relationships and are betrayed or loved, it affects us deeply and draws us in. When we make a choice that causes terrible consequence, it shouldn’t simply be a “Oh that sucks. Let’s move on” type of deal, it should be painful, it should be emotional. Otherwise it’s noise.

Unfortunately these concepts and how to implement them in story have not really pushed hard by Gw2 for our characters. We see relationships and crisis for OTHER characters, like Trahearne and the heroes in Destiny’s Edge. But we the player character are simply “The Commander”. A cardboard cut-out with no real personal investment or loss.

It’s a bit hard to overhaul the whole system, but there are some minor things that could be done in the future to improve the story. One is simply to allow the players to have an actual relationship with an npc. Building relationships takes time and effort, but carefully done you can have a love interest or an enemy (or both!). That will give the personal story more heft. The other idea is to bring real tragedy and allow the player to face crisis. Maybe they fail a mission no matter what they do, and subsequently turn dark for a period of time, believing there is no goodness in the world. It takes a real sacrifice from somebody close to them to pull them back to the light. That kind of thing.

Obviously all this emotional drama does not work with simple in game chat dialog. You need some cut-scenes that show your character in real distress by these choices, or real joy\hatred when building that relationship. It’s the little things added to these moments that make all the difference.

GW2 seems to have a great grasp of the macro picture and history of it’s world. What they lack is the personal touch. That only comes with real investment, not as an afterthought. They would be well served by poaching somebody from bioware for the next expansion, at least to get someone to help them with thinking in this direction.

Agreed with every word!
They have much to learn about story crafting.
But lets say this is the story and this is the best thing they could think of. It would be much more appreciated if they won’t tell the story like you were a 6 year old.
The writing and voice acting are BAD.

Mapisto.2154

Hey guys. Just finished the story of HoT.
The gameplay was fun and the overall story line was OK, but the writing and voice acting of the dialogs in the game reminds me of myself being 6 years old playing with lego figures. And that’s… disappointing.
It was really childish and really shallow, which really got me questioned about the age rate of this game. Last time I checked it was rated T for teens, but the story is fit for elementary school kids. I think teens these days deal with much more deep, complex and emotional content.
And I’m the kind of guy that can enjoy teen games (tho I’m not a teen).
I loved how they finally gone 'Game of Thrones' and killed two of our main characters which we know and love - finally something serious happened in the story, but the way they acted in those parts was really numb.

I hope I’m not the only one who thinks this way, and that someone up there reads this, and I hope anet will improve their writing and supply more immersive stories on their next releases.

How come all (but one) medium coats are dresses? I mean, its not even practical…
Light armor leggings are mostly skirts.. Its kinda annoying when you play a male character.

I think they should make more slim looking armor, especially medium.
More shirt-like coats and more pants!

Non-berserker builds should be more rewarding

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mapisto.2154

Mapisto.2154

I’m curious how everyone is defining “rewarding” when comparing two stat builds. I mean, everyone receives the same rewards regardless of stat combo. So the only possible definition of “rewarding” I can possibly think of would be just speed of killing things.

I don’t find killing things faster any kind of reward. I rarely play zerker anymore. Mostly because I stopped PUG groups all together and strictly run with guild so I have the freedom to experiment with other playstyles without fear of someone hopping on a high horse. To me it is far more enjoyable playing a build less traveled and still complete all of the most difficult content.

Speedrunning, IMO, is a product of min-maxing. If you want to speedrun as fast as possible it requires a specific type of playstyle. There can only be one ideal build for completing content the fastest. Whatever that is, that’s what speedrunners will gravitate toward. In this case zerker. If you aren’t into speedrunning the who TF cares?

If you are into speedrunning then you have to realize there is an ideal combination to do it absolute fastest. If you want to run a different build, then you don’t speedrun, you just do dungeons normally.

Zerker is no more or less rewarding than any other stat combo. Zerker is just fastest at killing things because that’s how the stats work in this game. There will always been a best stat combo for a specific need (DPS in this case). And before people chime in about DPS being only measure in this game. Yea, that’s MMOs. Sorry to break it to you. Things have HP, things need to lose HP. Some do it better than others, this isn’t rocket science. Last I checked, every dungeon/fractal in this game can be completed with 5 cleric builds if you truly wanted to do it.

Zerker build is top DPS, find a build that still has decent damage output and utility if you want. All stat builds can DPS, but they can’t all be exactly the same, that’s not how stats work….

In ‘rewarding’ i meant for the player. there is no reason to change your build and armor stats to something other than zerk (mostly in pve). Its just too good on anything like world events, dungeons, it can solo bosses…
Ill give you an example:
My main character is a thief, and thieves have a bunch of fun skills like traps, caltrops, venoms and elit skills like dagger storm.
But why would I use them?! They arent that effective in pve, they are too weak.
You better put zerk armor and all your signets and just burst damage by spamming backstab.
Even short bow is used only because of its 5th skill for mobility and thats it.
If you like this style, be my guest. But I think arenanet need to make other builds more liked and wanted.
Its like they are saying ‘We gave you a lot of skills but only 2 are actually good. The rest is just foe the show’.

Looks like you are trying to underrate the gear just to say that zerker is not a problem. Try running meta traits with nomads and see how much dps you will lose.

The DPS you’d lose is largely irrelevant when you consider that you’d be essentially unkillable.

Yeah, clearlly irrelevant. That is why we see everyone running nomads, clerics, dire, etc and no one running zerker/assassin.

Have you considered that people don’t run those because they don’t need to be unkillable?

Have ever thought that the reason they would be unkillable is because dungeon’s bosses are doing too little dmg and when they do it is concentrated in slow telegraphed skills? If bosses had more armor, less hp, more dmg, and hit more often the game would be much more balance for all the other stat combination available. The reason defensive stats are useless now is because there is little to no unavoidable dmg in pve.

What if the boss’ telegraph attack was still pretty strong, but during the channel of a certain one, it blocks critical hits, has heightened armor and if interrupted, he kind of “explodes” doing AoE CC and ripping all your boons away? If he uses the attack and lands it, he follows up with quick flurries of weaker hits but while doing so is much more vulnerable to damage for a time?

Yeah, that sounds overcomplicated and would lend to being broketastic from the moment it were implemented on into the rest of the game’s lifestpan.

I shudder to imagine them trying to make something that complex playable for the average GW2 player.

Hah, I love this attitude.

Pretty much amounts to “ACCEPT THE GAME THE WAY IT IS! FLAWS, REPEAT TACTICS AND ALL!” I mean, geeze, you’re basically not even trying

Accept it or don’t, I really don’t care what you do. I’ll be over here being reasonably happy with most of what there is, yes, even with its flaws.

But I’ll go on with that, and you go on being however you prefer. In the end, Anet’s gonna do what Anet wants no matter what you, I or Smokey the Bear say about anything.

If it has flaws, say it has flaws.
You shouldn’t defend them.
As I said, in the end it is their interest to make the game better.

People in zerker builds don’t want the other builds to be viable because they’ve invested all their time and gold onto a zerker meta. They’ve got all ascended zerker gear and they’ve got their gold grinds pat down.

They don’t want different content. They want quick content they can gimmick into their gold payout quick and efficiently.

This is what you get when you introduce huge gold grinds as the main method for aesthetic progression in the game. People stop caring about playing the game and just want to get the gold grind for their legendaries done as quick as possible, or get those fractals done asap as well so that they can go farm as much gold as they can get for the day, so that they can buy the next incredibly expensive rare skin they want.

Great comment!
but making other stats more valuable does not make the zerk gear less valuable in my oppinion.

I think you guys miss my point. I was a zerk untill now and found it too easy and boring.
But other playstyles are not as good as zerks, and i think condies should be more effective in pve.
There is a reason why most of LFG descriptions ask for “lvl 80 war ele zerk only”.
zerk groups can beat anything in seconds. there is no reason whatsoever to try another build. there is no role for a condi or a healer in those groups.
So i think the non zerk builds should be more “needed” in pve.

The only thing zerker is ‘needed’ for is speed running. That’s it.

Nobody needs it for anything else in pve. If you want to try for a world record clear time of Arah P2, you’re gonna need to get good and do it in zerker though, yes.

To clear Arah P2? You need a few people with gear that isn’t broken that can dodge occasionally and are awake at least most of the time. That is what you need in PvE.

Not much else.

That is exactly my point. They need to make other builds more effective in pve.

Hi everyone.
I feel like non-berserker builds should be more rewarding, in PVE especially.

The most common stats for armor and weapons is berserker’s, and I can see why,
you kill foes really fast, and basically it is the laziest way do deal a huge amount of damage.

Personally I think its ruining all the fun you can have with your class.
Most of the time you use the same skills over and over again, or just put a bunch of signets and spam the most damaging weapon skill you have.
So I decided to try more builds other then berserker, and the truth is: it is not as good as the berserker build.
They are more fun to play – but not as good.
Iv’e tried it on three different classes:
Thief (which has REALLY FUN skills that NO ONE USES because they are not proper berserker skills.),
Mesmer and Warrior.

It all comes to this: conditions are not that good in PVE and the fastest way to kill a monster is with a good critical damage.
And if you put the right traits, zerk doesn’t die that quickly.
If you are not a zerk, you aren’t welcome in dungeon groups because your’e not good/fast enough.
When was the last time you saw a player wearing a rampager armor? sinister? shaman?

Im not saying “nerf zerks”.
I think condition damage should play a greater role in PVE.
Healing power and vitality are not that important to survive.
Non-zerk builds not rewarding enough.

Hope you guys agree with me.
