I am leaving after a little over 5 months of playing and had a great time.
At first I was overwhelmed by many things and did not have a clear direction. The graphics and movement were awesome and once I had decided to do the stories (in order), I had a blast. I mapped Tyria 100%, finished all of the stories as a human and had gotten pretty good at jumping puzzles. I went after different achievements and was really happy when I finished some of them like Lion’s Arch Exterminator, the diving achievement and several others. I have two characters at level 80 (a Chrono and a Reaper) and used my Level 80 boost on an Engineer when I thought (from reading the forums) that farming in Lake Doric was allowed and was going to be a long term option.
Then I hit a wall. I don’t PvP or WvW and only dabbled in Fractals a few times. So I decided to work on Legendary Gear. Ugh, not as easy as I thought. Someone recommended trying to get Ascended Gear. I really wanted the cool looking stuff but was asked several times (in parties) if I had Viper Gear, so I settled on trying for Ascended. It was a tedious grind and I became frustrated.
I had bought two HoT at Walmart for $15 each, so I decided on a fresh start. One of each race; Asura Necro, Charr Warrior, Norn Ranger, and a Sylvari Mesmer (or Elementalist, I hadn’t decided). My last slot was for my Human Key Farmer of any profession. I had fun reading the new/old stories but then I hit the Ascended Gear wall again. I found out that my Human account could help a little with Ascended Gear but there were some things that just needed to be farmed.
In conclusion, I love Guild Wars 2 and spent quite a bit of money in the Gem Store but for now, I put it aside to try another MMO with no PvP or WvW that can be played on my computer and phone. The graphics aren’t as good as GW2 but the community is great and it’s F2P. Will I be back? Probably, I am really into the Living World stories. Did I get my money’s worth? Heck yeah!
Why did I write this? So that new players, reading the forums, have an example of what I, a new and not good player experienced.

It didn’t take me that long to get to Lake Doric. After one hour of farming, not sure what I was doing and forgetting to run around and see if my auto loot missed anything out of loot range, I made 21g 0s 28c. So that means I would have to do over 100 hours to get about 2000 gold. That is not taking into account diminishing returns or the time to sell everything at the TP. On a personal note, this is really, really boring. I would probably do this one hour a day while watching something on TV.
I’m still undecided but I will have to get him to Chapter 4 of LWS3. Considering I have no clue on how to play an engineer, it will probably take a while just to get to Lake Doric. I am leaning more towards just doing it because I haven’t had any other use for the boost since I like to slowly learn the profession I am playing except in this case.
I’ve been holding on to my Level 80 Boost that came with Heart of Thorns. I have all the Living World episodes. I recently saw a post where someone made 40 gold in a half hour at the leather farm in Lake Doric. Would it be a good idea to create and boost an Engineer, get to Lake Doric and just set down turrets? My idea is that after just a week or so of farming, I will have enough gold to buy anything I want in the Gem Store by exchanging gold for gems. I will also be able to buy any Legendary Weapon at the Trading Post after a couple of weeks or less.
I have 9 gold and am using gold daily to craft ascended gear. If I play PvE about 2 to 3 hours a day it would take me over 100 days to get the tools if I don’t buy anything else and just do the things that make gold and nothing else (i.e. leveling characters, exploring, having fun). I estimate the tools cost about 500 gold with the current exchange rate and would make about five gold a night more or less doing things that I am able to do. This is frustrating. I was really enjoying GW2, would talk to everyone about it and tell them to try it. Now i am telling them about this and they are recommending other games to me.
The tools do give give a p2w advantage. Players who buy the tools no longer have to go out of their way to get tools to collect unbound magic or carry an extra set for when they run out. They can just farm as they travel with no thought to UM. Then they can go buy a bunch of Magic-Warped Bundles which usually gives back at least the gold spend and can give over 8 gold if items are sold on the trading post, or be able to craft Legendary items with things bought with UM and sell them on the TP. I am not a smart man and maybe I am seeing this wrong. As soon as I can afford them, I will either be getting the Unlimited Unbound Magic Tools or a new game to play. Haven’t decided yet.
In other words, players can gather Unbound Magic with an Unlimited Gathering Tool if they apply a Unbound Magic Gathering Boost to it. The benefit is players can use the tools they like and don’t feel like their current gathering tools are obsolete. I thought the price could be 500 gems for one or three for 1200 gems.

I too wish there was some type of exchange policy. On April 12, 2017 I bought the Gathering Infinite Basic Pack. Forty-two days later I found out the new tools weren’t just cosmetic. I asked to exchange the tools I purchased and pay the difference. I was advised, "The Gathering Infinite Basic Pack you purchased from the gem store greatly exceeds our allowed timeframe for gem refunds. "
I don’t buy anything for looks. I buy bank slots, shared inventory slots, Living World Chapters and things that help me play the game. I am on a limited income and must save up for the things I want. For me, the Infinite Tools where convenient and I don’t have to be concerned with carrying a back up set of tools
I’ve been trying to get unbound magic to get ascended trinkets and back. A partial refund and a refund that must be used immediately in the store was mentioned. Great ideas!

Thank you both for your advice. I will have one of my level 80 humans buy the cultural armor when I can afford them all (making ascended armor is costing me more than I thought LOL). I finally found the Racial achievements in Wiki under “Hero (Achievements)”.
I went near Agrak Kraal as suggested and got the Achievement, Thank you for the suggestion!
It might be worth it to do ‘Setting the Stage’ for each race to get the BLC Keys. I usually only open one chest a week after key farming.

SlippyCheeze: Great advice! I use GW2Efficiency.com, GW2Crafts.net and Dulfy.net all the time.
Bearshaman: That is what I am doing with the armor I am making since I don’t spend a lot of time in the HoT areas yet. Thank you for the link.
I have been looking into Racial Achievements and learned that I have to have at least one of every race to level 80 so they can complete Part 3 of their Personal Story and to get the Emperor’s New Wardrobe achievement, and I need to get a Norn or Charr to align with Ogres to complete the Mapping Tyria Achievement since they are the only ones who can go to Agrak Kraal. I thought they were the only races that could go to Onager Bivouac but I must have misread something because according to the Wiki, any race can get there by selecting “Dishonored by Allies”.
Two questions: What achievement do I get by completing Part 3 of the Personal Story? Are there any other achievements (or anything else) based on race that I have missed?
I have 10 character slots and would eventually like to have one human for each profession and a key farmer after getting all the racial stuff done.
Note: I edited to correct errors in my original question.

I am not very good but do well with a Reaper which is a very forgiving class i.e. minions and two health bars. I have a Chronomancer that I have to concentrate on to remember combos and proper sequences. I have been told that Elementalists/Tempests are powerful but requires many key strokes akin to playing a piano and they must stay very mobile because when set up for high damage, they are glass cannons.
Bearshaman; I got Spire of the Sunless and Leftpaw’s Weapon’s Chest which I may use to make a Berserker scepter since I like using it with a Warhorn. I will look into farming LS3 areas after I finish the story and repairing Caldbolg (just for fun). Thanks for the advice!
Great advice and also a confirmation that in my case, I am going in the right direction. I am not that good at HoT maps and haven’t put a lot of time into them yet except to search for Mastery Insights (I am working towards Ley Line Gliding). So far from doing the Boss Trains I’ve gotten Spire of the Sunless, Leftpaw’s Weapon Chest and Beigarth’s Breastplate (which I can’t use yet because my Warrior is only level 40). I am holding off on making the pieces until I have all the component in case I get lucky and get a piece of ascended armor. I am learning fractals from a fractals guild that meets twice a week. When I dare to visit PvP or WvW, I mainly just explore and run from enemy players. Unless I just decide to give other players an easy kill. In those cases, I fight but always die. LOL
To Ayrilana; Great idea! I thought I would never use the teleport to a friend stones that I have. Now I have a reason to use them. Thank you!
Thank you both. I have been crafting a spool of silk weaving thread and a spool of thick Elonian cord every day and after three days have my first Ferratus Rabid Insignia. I see your point. My leather stock decreased very quickly. Currently I am on LW3S2 but may have to skip to LW3S4 to farm leather. When I am am able, I do LW in the morning, and a Boss Train and crafting in the evening hoping that a very rare ascended armor drops. So far I got an ascended staff from Tequatl that looks really cool.
Thank you for your help. I hate the thought of doing the story out of order but when my leather or gold runs out, I may have to. Either that or wait even longer for ascended armor. Ugh. LOL
I’m making my first set of ascended armor. I am making Ferratus’ armor and then I will change it to Yassith’s. Is this still the cheapest and easiest way to craft ascended armor?
I have been playing a little over 4 months and wish there was a way to learn Professions besides joining a Guild and learning to play Metas besides just getting in there and blindly fighting. There is a Guild called EVOS that does TT every day at midnite EST. They are a great example of teaching a Meta. They explain step by step what to do and give time for questions. I belong to four Guilds. One is a Fractal teaching Guild, SEAL, that teaches Friday and Sunday nights and the players are very patient. They explain what is going to happen, what to do and what not to do. They answer Noob questions on TS without out any problem like; what is CC, what is a breakbar, how do you stack might, and so forth. There are other Metas that I go in and just try. I have learned to watch the chat window because sometimes someone is screaming (in all caps) “stop attacking”. A good example is the first time I did Octivine in Tarir. I was East and while attacking the Octovine noticed nobody was around me, looked at the chat window and was being told to stops. Ooops.
As far as knowing my Profession, I started with a Mesmer and after getting him to 80 could not figure out how to do Continuum Split even after googling it, reading about it and watching videos. Something that I figured might be important. So I changed to Necromancer, a more forgiving Profession. So what do I do? I carry a Staff for AOE and a Scepter/Warhorn for speed and one on one fights. I pick traits that sound like they might work for me (i.e. keeping minions alive, automatically changing me to Reaper Shroud when I am dying which sometimes works against me when I accidently change back, passive buffs, etc.) and mash keys when fighting. I save “Rise!” and Well of Suffering for difficult MOBs or Bosses.
Am I having fun? I am having a BLAST and killed Mordremoth yesterday solo!! Half the time I think I am just getting lucky or that the AI realizes what a bad player I am and nerfs the instance. LOL Oh, and I learned while fighting Mordremoth that I do pretty decent damage while in a downed state and spamming “1”.
I come from a generation that had strategy guides, walkthroughs, GameFAQs and cheat codes. Now I have to google and wade through outdated posts. Most times I find helpful stuff, sometimes not.
I guess what I am saying is it would be nice if there was more help for new players but the Guild Wars 2 is still lots of fun and most players, at least in PvE, are helpful and patient with new players.
Finally did Vexa’s Lab. Someone else was doing it at the same time and it helped.
Thanks for the quick reply. I agree, it’s not worth losing the account and you explained why it’s not the same as a port great. Thank you!
Also, quick question. Is using the under map shortcut to the Not So Secret JP against Terms of Service or is it considered the same as asking a Mesmer for a port?
Vexa’s Lab for players like me that are trying to make Mawdrey.
I did this tonight for the first time. It took me about an hour and I died four times but I finished it. Wish I had known that we could kill the clouds. I just thought I had to light the fires faster than the clouds were putting them out. I figured out how to make the pods explode half way through but didn’t know there was a pattern that i could just go around in a circle and get them all. I ran into a slight bug trying to enter the cave but backed up, walked towards it again and jumped around till I got in. On a side note, I am a 53 year old guy with a slow reaction time and often don’t do well but I have found that persistance and practice helps a lot, and when I get stuck, I watch a related video, read the wiki and if all else fails come here or go to LA for advice. Many players are very helpful and I appreciate it.
According to the Guild Wars 2 Wiki; Shared Inventory Slots went on sale April and August of last year. Please have another sale. I plan on getting at least five when they go on sale.
Here is my post:
I did the Disturbance in Brisban Wildlands and that seemed to go well. A day or two later I decided to do Fallen Hopes and ran into issues.
When anywhere but Dry Top, my map said that the point to go to was in the Northern Area of Tread Rock Uplands. So started my great adventure. After over an hour of searching, googling, wiki-ing, youtubing and finally asking players in Dry Top, I got to the area indicated on the map. I even went to my Guild’s Hall and came back to make sure I was in the right area but the Green Dot wasn’t there.
So I went to LA and asked if anyone else had an issue, I got several suggestions but none of the answers applied. I looked in the upper right and it said to meet Spark at the Crash Site. I was told in LA that the Crash Site is the first area of Dry Top that I quickly passed through. So I went there and looked around. I finally saw a Zephyrite with a Green Dot over her head. I’m guessing her name is Spark. Yay! This led me to another Green Dot that appeared and then was gone (thank goodness I’m not that senile and remember where to go), which led me to another Green Dot.
Things went well for a short while. I met up with Marjory and Kasmeer (love them btw). We jumped, speeded and teleported, and found a dying Zephyrite who talked about her boss, the Keeper of Peace. That part was a little weird; first Kasmeer talks about porting us and then we talk to the dying crewman and then we port. So I get to the part with 3 Green Dots. I go to the one that is by the hull but there is no Green Dot. I go to the charred remains, get told to talk to Marjory but she isn’t talking. I go to the journal, get told to talk to Marjory who now talks to me about the burnt remains. I go back to the first Green Dot and now Marjory wants to talk about the journal but I don’t see a Green Dot. I kill a few Dust Mites and Twister and try again, finally jump off the cliff, go back to the # Green Dot area and the story progressed.
I just thought I would let you know my experience as a new player and someone who hasn’t played a game like this in over 10 years when I used to play GW1 with my children. I love the stories, the jokes, the animation. I have learned that GW2 teaches without instructing which is Great! Fantastic Game! Awesome Devs and Players (except in Raids where some can be very impatient and mean, lol) Thank you for may hours of fun!
I had the same problem and posted it under Support>Bugs on April 14, 2017. I traveled all over not realizing I past right by it. I finally went to Lion’s Arch and asked. I ran into another part in Dry Top LWS2 were the green dot showed on the map but wasn’t in the area and the conversation was one step behind what I was doing. Wasted quite a bit of time trying to figure out what was going on.
AWESOME! I liked the pace of the story and all the new possibilities.
Thank you for putting the dragons to sleep, bringing the gods back AND bringing M.O.X. back. This is so great! Is there going to be a God battle in the future? I got to go back and pay more attention to what B said. I get a feeling there are clues in there.
Great job ANET and thank you!!

Shaman Ursel when he speaks to Bann in the Bear Lodge. I am grandpa and the conversation made me smile and mist up.
Yes! Common clothing as a skin for armor would be awesome!
One other note/warning, a Profession’s versatility, power and role can sometimes change when major patches come out.
It would very much depend on how you play (alone, with others, melee, ranged, etc), what you like doing(PvE, Fractals, WvW, PvP, etc) and your other preferences. That being said, in my opinion (emphasis on “my opinion”). Warrior/Berserker can handle most situations in GW2. It is an easy Profession to learn but like the other Professions, takes time and dedication to master.
I too enjoy all the Professions and change depending on my mood. I mainly solo PvE and right now I am focusing on my Necromancer mapping and doing LWS2 because I like being able to use the minions to take aggro and the second health bar helps me a lot. I didn’t recommend Necromancer because of the low DPS and they are not usually wanted in Raids.
Eros, thanks for the advice. I kind of wiped out my crafting supplies and gold a few weeks ago when I made Viper Exalted gear with Berserker runes for my Necromancer. So, I took a break from crafting because it gets kind of expensive. By now I may have enough to get my Tailor from 450 to 500.
I really enjoy my Mesmer and like that he has a lot of neat combos and he surprises me with how quickly he can down the enemies in certain areas. My Warrior is only a level 25 but will get more attention when after I map Orr (my last three areas to map, I just finished Frostgorge Sound).
I will use my Necro for Dragon Stand as you suggested but I will keep making small attempts even without Ascended Gear.
My long term goal is to get each Profession to level 80 and get them fully or at least decently equipped. If I get bored with that or need a change, I may buy more character slots and make a Warrior, Ranger and Necromancer for each race. I prefer these professions because they are good for players like myself who just want to relax and play or go kill a bunch of bad guys. Right now all my characters (except my key farmer) are bald, bearded humans.
Thanks again.
Thank you both for your comments. I really appreciate them.
I really enjoy PVE and have a great time mapping (and doing events while mapping) and playing Living World Season 2. I only have four more areas to map. I also belong to a very patient Fractals Teaching Guild which meets on Sunday. I participate in the Tarir Vine in Auric Basic (still not sure what to do on the bomb one so I run around trying to kill things while someone pushes the bomb), join boss trains, craft (stuck at Level 450 on several) and play alts. I have a level 80 Mesmer, a level 80 Necromancer and one of every other profession plus a Key Farmer. I am currently focused on the Warrior when not mapping, playing LW2 or one of the other things I mentioned. I like all the classes for different reasons. I am having a blast!
All that being said, should I focus on something to get more out of the game and make playing easier for myself such as, getting ascended armor and weapons? I read the forums and look at metabattle to get ideas but primarily go with builds that have passive effects because I forget I have added certain things when I get in a battle (i.e. Lich Form, Blink, etc.). Since there is so much to do and so many ways to play, I just want to see if I am headed in the right direction.
On a side note, I enjoy being able to faceroll or just auto attacking. I haven’t made it to Dragon Stand yet because I die on the way there but I am getting better in HoT area and even watched as my phantasms took down one of those rolling armadillo things. I stayed out of their way and just created a new phantasm when it killed one. It was GREAT!
Any help, comments, advice would be appreciated. Even just saying, “your playing like the rest of us PVE-ers” would be encouraging. Thank you.

I had a great time in the SAB! Thanks for the welcome, suggestion and offer to help!
I’ve been playing for almost 3 months and I am having a great time! There are areas that I used to avoid but now that I have a little experience, they have gotten easier and in some cases I look forward to going there.
Many players are very helpful and there is so much to do: i.e. Personal story, mapping, crafting, meta events, dungeons, fractals, WvW, PvP, fashion wars, collections, casual exploring and listening to NPCs’ conversations, and more.
I am tickled when I am on my way to do something, decide to take a detour and I am rewarded for it. For example, last night I joined the battle against the vines in Tarir. On my way to fight one of the four vines I saw some arches and decide to try to fly under each one. Imagine my surprise when I got a Mastery Point for something I decided to do for fun. LOL
Thank you again for a Fun and Fantastic game!
That is the mistake I made about a month or so ago. I was trying to rush to Heart of Thorns and when I got there, I kept dying. Now, I am taking my time and mapping with a Necromancer. He finished all the home cities, all areas level 1 to 25, Gendarran’s Field and is working on Lornar’s Pass, and he is already at level 78 some hard parts but all fun. Especially if you listen to the NPCs talk, look at the Vistas and just enjoy the game. Also, every City has 2 or 3 pets you can get.
Just remember to upgrade your gear every 10 to 20 levels. If you start dying more, check your equipment. Jewelry and other things also help. Take your time and have fun.
Are you playing a Bearbow Ranger, Minion Master Necromancer or something else? The only part in early level PVE that you really have to dodge is to get to a chest that is surrounded by spikes or some other traps. Everything else you should be able to kill from a distance while your pet or minions take the heat. Where are you having a problem? Someone might be able to come up with an alternative solution.
Silent The Gray, I probably had GW1 in the back of my mind. That game is awesome! Miss my Heroes and Henchmen. LOL
Thank you for your quick replies. I completely understand and appreciate your explanations.
I seen many threads where players discuss at length whether Guild Wars 2 is too easy or not hard enough, which tells me it’s pretty well balanced.
That being said, would it require a lot of work for Arenanet to offer various modes of play? I am not very computer literate so I am just curious.
Here is my idea:
Easy Mode: Players must purchase an Easy Mode package from the TP. They must create a new character(s) that can only play by themselves (all of Easy Mode is an instance) and have access to their Easy Mode bank which is separate from Regular Mode bank. No TP, No Ascended or Legendary but they can buy from the store with cash (bank slots, bag slots, skins for looks etc. )
Regular Mode: Stays the same. It’s a great balance, like I said.
Difficult Mode: Players must purchase an Difficult Mode package from the TP. Again, it is an instance but everything is harder but players can invite other players who purchased the Difficult Mode package to play in Difficult Instances. Player would have access to everything in Regular mode. The players can receive Titles and special rewards if this is feasible.
I am not that good at computer stuff. Is this easily done or would it require too much time and work for Arenanet to profit from it? I am thinking that some people that search for a new video game experience might base their choice on whether it is easy or a challenge.
Mesmers seems better for support, unless you are very well versed in the combinations to do i.e. Continuum Split, or are fairly good at playing Mesmer. Try a Necromancer or Ranger. Either will level very quickly and both have helpers (or meat shield as some call them). If you really want to stick with Mesmer then watch videos and learn how others survive or join a Guild that is willing to teach you the mechanics of surviving as a Mesmer. Good luck!
Hello and welcome! It’s lots of fun with lots of helpful players.
Turrets don’t draw agro like pets or minions and engineer sometimes requires finger work to change kits from what I read. My first character was a Mesmer and Mesmers are slow to level, your clones disappear when the enemy they are fighting disappears and they also require some fast finger work sometimes (Continuum Split).
For PvE and with your disability, I would lean more towards Ranger for the distance. BTW, you may be in tights spots like caves where you will need to pull out the Ranger’s Greatsword but it does better damage than the bow. The Necro has a second life bar and pets but will required more hand usage for switching form and using abilities.
Welcome back! As a relatively new player who is still learning how to play well, I would like to share some things I’ve learned.
I will answer the second question first; try both Necromancer (Minion Master) and Ranger and see what you like better. I am currently playing a Necromancer and the minions have saved my butt on several occasions but I do often melee attack to do more damage. As a Ranger with a tanky pet, you can also do well from a distance (Longbow Bear) from what I read. Reading about the profession you choose and watching videos will help a lot. Since you have trouble dodging, just be alert and get ready to run if your pet or minions die since you indicate you would have trouble with melee. I would probably lean more towards Ranger if I were you because of the distance between you and the enemy.
In response to your first question; I made the mistake of being concerned about the end game for the first month or so and then what fellow players have been saying clicked, “It’s a game. Have fun!” Set goals for yourself like mapping an area, hunting Karka, finishing the first chapter of the story, getting to level 400 in crafting, collecting all the pets (if you choose Ranger), and just exploring, enjoying the NPCs’ conversations and great art work. If you see a battle going on, join in from a distance. There are many things to explore and do during the game. I guess I am saying, enjoy the journey because the end game is a long way off (for now).
I would also recommend Human or Norn areas because they seem (to me) to be a little easier.
Hope this helps :-)
I agree with the OP. It would be entertaining and amusing in some cases (thinking male Norn or bald, bearded human in a gown). I would also really, really, REALLY like if something similar to the clothing made by the Endless Common Clothing Tonic could be armour which is my favorite outfit because of it’s simplicity and elegance.
When I first started, I was told there is no Holy Trinity. Yet there are many areas of the game where a Druid is needed for healing, an Ele is needed for DPS and a Warrior (Guardian) is needed for Tanking. In this respect, it seems GW2 lost it’s original intent. Imagine a party composed of Mesmers and Thieves trying to do Pvp, WvW, Raids or Dungeon.
There are plenty of videos of people doing exactly that.
I found a few Dungeons but could not find Mesmers and Thieves winning PVP, WVW and Raids with none of the previously mentioned Holy Trinity classes. Could you provide some links please? Also Fractals if they are there.
