I am trying out Hammer / Physical skills build and that is fun. Bulls Rush, Bolos, kick plus all the hammer CC skills. Mix of power and toughness.
I use Knight’s gear. Shouts are awesome in group PVE.
I have played Warrior exclusively since day 1. I do mainly WvW with some PvE on occasion. Currently rolling wtih the Flameseeker Prophecies legendary shield.
A lot of success in WvW is based off of playing style. From level 1-80 I ran double axe / berserk / rifle build and had pretty good success. I was a glass canon but knew how to use my character. Always used my rifle as a set up to melee attack. Once I comfortable with the odds I switched to axes, activated endure pain/frenzy and finished the job. A lot of dodging. I feel a lot of my 1v1 roaming victories were due to me outplaying someone who just wanted to stand toe to toe instead of being more skillful. That’s what I love about this game, that it’s a blend of skill and numbers.
This is the build I run a lot lately (axe / shield & rifle) with lots of toughness. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/warrior/Axe-Board-Warrior-in-WvW/first#post995815
I have a lot of survivability in big battles often doing very well when the odds are close. I rely on toughness and blocking to survive, but at times lack the mobility when being over-run.
I’m pretty successful in 1v1 while roaming. I’ve pummeled plenty of kitteny GS warriors who become ordinary after blowing their load on 100blades and I’m barely phased after blocking/dodging/enduring pain. I spend a lot of time chasing thieves after they realize I can take a beating but rarely catch them.
For those that are heavy stick and movers bleed builds work wonders. There was one elementalist in WvW that whipped on me a couple times running my axe/board. Very good survivability, good cc and knew how to stick and move very well. With my axe I just couldn’t get enough hits on him.
The next time I ran into him I was either running dual 1h swords with my condition damage gear/runes (and still toughness). I was able to best him due to the bleeding. I actually had to chase him down and he would have got away easy if he didn’t bleed out to a down state.
Same with thieves. They can stealth, but still take damage from bleeding.
I guess my point is learn your strengths/weaknesses and work around them. Use skill instead of trying to go toe-to-toe against everyone as you won’t always win. Certain builds work better against certain classes/builds.
Warriors are quite fun. From 1h weapons / shield to hammer to dual maces there is a lot of variety.
Asuran is fun, especially when you have a Norn that’s probably saying there’s a little kitten Asuran Im going to kill, then you destroy him in combat.
If I can do again I’d probably go Human or Norn so my weapons stand out more. Charzooka on a Norn anyone?
I went level 1-80 going dual axe and switched to other builds but right now running axe/shield with flameseeker legendary. I do pve and wvw, but frame my builds around WvW.
The damage difference is quite noticeable. Skill 5 in dual axe is very under-rated. It helps build up adrenaline fast and is great for AOE.
Dual axe/rifle gets ripped on often, but I had plenty of success in WvW with high crit % / dmg. I always opened with my rifle and switching to axes when I knew the odds/survivability were in my favor. The problem is once you blow your load using your skills you start losing DPS. I still had great success, but I attribute to playing to my strengths instead of charging in.
With axe/shield I went power, precision, toughness. Reference my build here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/warrior/Axe-Board-Warrior-in-WvW/first#post1010560
It works very well for me in WvW as I have very high survivability. I feel comfortable in a 1v1 anyone, but have had trouble with a CC elementalist that seemed to have very high toughness. Big crowd fights are great with surviving and block is fantastic.
Recently I tweaked and went 0/0/30/30/10 and went with shouts and did not notice a dps decrease but this is off a small sample size.
The best advice is buy some rare weapons cheap to try them out yourself.
As far as dungeon, axe/shield is superior. Try fighting the lieutenant in AC with dual axe and see how long you survive. With shield I can block his pull and take a beating from many of his attacks.
I choose Skeggox because the blue shine matches well with the Flameseeker shield.
I’d say the perma-swiftness is at best an equal tradeoff. It can help in escaping in instances, but is very useful for map travel. I take in account my toughness/blocking/survivability for escape.
I don’t view regen as a lifesaver in major battles, but love the 16 second cooldown on the heal.
This is really more of an Axe & Board
WvWvW build, but yeah, I get your meaning. Off topic, why did you skin a Corrupted Skeggox over a Destroyer Axe? Back on topic, is the perma swiftness worth the loss of mobility skills from say the sword/greatsword/hammer? Are the two regen heals from the signet and adrenal health enough to sustain you in longer high pressure combat scenarios? I’m just curious as to the details of your experience.

File:Corrupted Skeggox.jpg
Just defeated him in IOJ 8:00 eastern.
Same boat. I need 7 shards for my FlameSeeker. Im starting to think Im better off doing fractals at this point.
I’m a few days away from acquiring the Flameseeker of Prophecies and looking for a good sword skin to go with it.
I have primeval armor skin. I switch between black/red and gold dyes. Asuran.
