I really think that Anet thought Rangers would be able to lock down their foes with traps and snares, and stack kitten-tons of condition damage on them and knock them down after stacking them with conditions, making them sort of a “gun-and-run” class as can be seen with shortbow. The problem is that Anet then decided to give EVERY class a ridiculously viable way of removing conditions. Heck, on my guardian I’ve been leveling condition removal is mind-numbingly easy. It’s borderline insulting.
Why does the medium armor mask always have to be a bandit mask. Why can’t I have a leather hood. Or even a leather helm.
I switched to Guardian and immediately my time in game feels substantially better. To be fair, this was probably the class for me from the get-go (I was a big fan of my WoW Paladin and this class offers some of that to me) So I can’t beat up Ranger for my preference choice there, but the final nails in the coffin were watching what kind of DPS and survivability my brother’s warrior could whip out in PVE without even weapon-swapping. But I’ll happily return to my Ranger as an Alt when it’s fixed im Sure.
I started with a Ranger, then I switched to Necromancer…………………………………………..
Anet has trolled me pretty hard.
I am starting to hate this game. I don’t want to be a freaking Guardian/Thief/Mesmer/Warrior to excel in PvP, I want my Ranger OR my Necro to do it.
I think that’s one reason Anet doesn’t enable dueling. If people could regularly fight in 1v1 they could get a real feel for the disparity in class balance right now.
That’s really what it comes down to in my opinion. While we all can agree WvWvW isn’t a great telling of a class’ equality based on potential equipment level disparity, sPvP isn’t much better because anyone can say “YO GUYZ RANGERS ARENT BROKEN I GOT MAD KILLZ LAST NIGHT YOU SUCK” By drumming up some killshots or mismatches. 1v1 situations are your best bet, and we generally get slaughtered in said situations.
I think honestly a mutual respect would lead to an easier fix to all the problems, but I don’t see it happening. Anet isn’t going to give away design ideas for the class which I feel is disrespectful. In general, this class is so broken none of us even know how Anet intended it to work, so some of us might realize when it’s fixed, we don’t even want to play this class anyway. And players are going to hate Anet for false hopes and class imbalance which is pretty much standard in any new MMO.
The way to fix this would be simple, utilizing a dev for each class with significant knowledge of the class who could comment on potential fixes to Anet while giving input to the community as well. However, Anet seems to enjoy running a skeleton crew and keeping the community in the dark. So, I rest my case.
Maybe you don’t want to play cause you want to be baby fed, but that doesn’t mean everyone else doesn’t. I still play my ranger fairly frequently, and in sPvP at that.
You should actually read the post before commenting. It’s okay though, I can baby feed you english twice as fast!
I didn’t say that I don’t want to play my Ranger. I said that for all we know, when Anet finally gives the class a set direction, some people may have not wanted to play in that direction in the first place. A lot of people coming to this class are going to base its conceptual gameplay on similar models (GW1 Ranger, WoW Hunter, insert any archer class ever made here…) and this may not even be how Anet wants the class to play. For all we know, this class may be designated as a more defensive, evasive combat class, it may turn into an offensive barrage of heavy burst damage coupled with Pet dps, it may become a support/CC class, utilizing battlefield attrition to destroy an opponent’s will. We don’t know because none of the parts of the class currently really work as intended, and unless you know something the entire community does not, for all you know, you may be playing a class you will not like come next patch!
You may want to improve your own “English”, before you try teach me. =]
Poor use of punctuation can easily lead to misunderstanding, like it did.
Now, if you desire, and if you must persist, I will type out how I read, and understood your statement the first time around.
I’ll take your punctuation rebuttal as concession for defeat. You’ve yet to prove me wrong, in the sense that because the Ranger currently lacks a general direction, it leaves the player-base no general consensus as to how it will play when fixed. Based on this, my point stands, some people who come back to the Ranger class after it is “fixed” may question whether it was ever a class they would have liked in the first place.

The block is nifty, but the weapon still lacks any reason to be used over things like… warrior greatsword.
In much the same way that a Warrior Greatsword lacks a pet.
Ranger GS is always going to look lacklustre compared directly to a Warrior GS. This isn’t a defect, an oversight or something that’s ever going to be changed. It’s factoring in that a portion of a Ranger’s dps comes from its pet.
Now I don’t like the pet being factored into dps so that my attacks are for the most part slightly weaker than any other class… So, I play a Thief.
You’re either happy relying upon a pet or you’re not. If you insist on direct comparisons with other classes weapons you’re going to be consistently disappointed. I mean it in the kindest possible way when I say, if this fundamental aspect of the Ranger causes you problems, you need to change class.
If you hold down either the “W” or “S” key while our pets, the “great equalizers” are attacking you, then you’ve just encountered the great secret to countering that “massive amount” of Ranger DPS we’ve stupidly forgotten to account for.
Consider this your first lesson in fundamentals.
Well for a start you’re quoting things that haven’t actually been said. So, way to construct a straw-man argument.
You’ll also find that I don’t like relying on a Ranger pet for dps, so I play a Thief. I’m not advocating the current Ranger reliance on a pet, I’m saying I don’t think it’s going to change so I moved away from my Ranger, and it will be factored into Ranger dps whether you like it or not.
Now, if you think they are going to change the Ranger pet mechanic some time soon you should stick with the Ranger.
If you think they’re not going to change the current relationship of Rangers, their pet and balance, you should change class.
If you don’t think they’ll change the situation and you don’t like it but you’re going to stick with the Ranger anyway and complain about it… then you’re just looking for opportunities to whine.
I didn’t construct any part of my argument. Hence why I quoted.
I don’t think right now anyone knows what will happen for the Ranger in the future because obviously, very little is working for the class in its current state right now. Support builds don’t work because Spirits are killed by a good sneeze, ranged burst builds aren’t there because of a lack of overall DPS, pet-heavy builds are useless because pets don’t hit moving targets (most targets in pvp) and melee builds aren’t satisfactory because every other class yields higher melee dps, mobility, and survivability.
This isn’t a matter of “well, I like sneaky classes so I picked a thief, you shouldn’t have picked a ranger if you didn’t want to rely on pet dps”. It’s a set of broken mechanics that lead Rangers to be upset. If our pets worked and we still complained that dps was low and didn’t combine our pet dps, I’d be in total agreement with you. None of us knew when we started playing that not only would 35-40% of our potential dps be unable to work properly, but that it wouldn’t be fixed in an appropriate manner. It would have certainly factored into our decision to play this class, as shown by how many of us have switched to other classes!
Maybe ANET should eliminate all F1-F4 abilities until the Rangers are rectified. This would make the game a more fair playing field and give the designers time to balance class mechanics. At that point, would you still want to play a thief? Consider that question for a bit.

as a casual player, it may be safe to say that by the time you hit 80 and competitive content, the class will have significant changes made. That being said, based on how much work it needs, this might not be the same class you learned to play when you hit 80.
guys, he obviously meant he and 2 of his friends all roll the same spec to take on a warrior. No need to mince his words…
Hey guys, I just wanted to throw out some opinions into the mix here, as I am also disappointed in this patch. I know we were all expecting so much more, etc.
It definately sucks that this was what most of us had to look forward to, the buffs to spirits that get AoE 1-shotted, some greatsword buffs which didn’t really shake the tree on our diversity (a lot of rangers use a greatsword anyway) and no definitive answer on pet fixes.
However, with that being said, if there is one thing I take away from this with some joy, it’s that Anet acknowledges this problem has yet to be rectified. We’ve all played enough MMO’s in the past to know we can all talk about times where class balance has been severely compromised in a game and the dev’s simply say “That ability where that class can insta-win is working as intended, as are the powers that are really just place holders for nifty button decals that your class has.” In this case, Anet has told us that we are still the most underpowered class in the game. I think this is the biggest victory we can find thus far, however shallow it is, that they know we need big changes STILL.
While I’d urge people play other classes that they will enjoy more, especially if they’re at lvl 80 on their rangers already, I don’t think threatening Anet will help. Anet is going to rope a ton of people into this game with these free weekend trials and stuff, people who dont read the forums, will try the ranger, level slowly because this game caters severely towards casuals, and by the time they ding 80 and realize how bad rangers were, they’ll have already fixed them.
If the Dev’s are reading this, it would probably be in your best interest to give some hard information regarding what changes are in store for the Ranger class, seeing as you did openly mislead the player base with the last Dev-post prepatch. You’ve alienated an entire portion of your playerbase, your best source for info on your shortcomings, by giving boons to Warriors and underwater combat buffs to Rangers. With only 2 people testing class balance (LOL, and to think, 90% of the ANet fanboi’s in this game who call Blizzard “The big bad wolf” or this game a “WoW-killer” are crying over the omission that you only have 2 dudes testing class balance, that alone is worth 1,000 laughs for me, anyone who ever called this game a WoW-killer deserves to be tarred and feathered for stupidity) the playerbase is probably your best resource for info at this point. You guys ought to step up and give the community an idea of how/when this class will progress to be equal to it’s competitors.
