When I’m playing GW2 and just randomly everything stops. Game disconnects and I have to log in and rez from a waypoint, but, at the same time, any and all other applications I’m running that use internet are just fine?

Does that mean it’s a GW2 issue? Or is it something on my end?

How can I tell?

I have tried closing everything that uses my internet before playing and I still disconnect a lot. I use comcast and have had virtually no issues in the past couple years.

I’m not sure what’s going on here. I don’t want to blame the game for it, but I can’t figure out any other reason. And while dying and having to return is not a big deal, it’s become frustrating enough that I’ve just stopped logging in. 15 minutes kiting/killing a champion and its army, only to disconnect when it’s at 3-4% is infuriating. But again, it’s not a big deal to re-do that stuff in solo play. But I won’t even consider doing anything that requires a group because the game is too unreliable and I’m not gonna ask people to stand around and wait for me.

I would really like some help with this because I enjoy the game. But if this is what I have to deal with every night, and since there’s no subscription, I’ll just stop playing.

Thanks for any help.

Stuck at 80

Hey community,

I’d like to ask for your help/advice.

I picked up the game a couple months ago and have had a lot of fun. I was really excited to get into WvW and the PvE has been fun so far. I rolled a thief, got him to 80 and a full set of exotic Berserker. While roaming/smallgrouping in WvW I was invited to a guild who is very active on our server. They asked if I had a guardian, and I didn’t. But I was very much intrigued by them, so I rolled one, got it to 80 fairly quickly, and grabbed a set of berserker’s and knight’s exotic.

So that’s where my problem started: The WvW hasn’t been as exciting as I thought—in zergs or in roaming. It seems to be a lot of PvE without much zerg v zerg action. When we do find people to attack, it’s usually a chase chase chase thing. What this has taught me is that WvW, while fun, is not the be-all, end-all for me ingame. I need to branch out.

It seems the guardian is a good call if I want to move into Dungeons (haven’t done any yet) and higher end PvE. But I also enjoy my thief. In addition, all the classes look so interesting that I could see myself leveling them just to experience the diverse classes. Any of the things I mentioned sounds fun. But I simply don’t budget enough time into the game to do it all.

I never thought I’d complain about it—and I don’t think I’m actually complaining—but there is just so much to do that it’s easy to get sidetracked or off-focus. I have always enjoyed MMOs the most when I had a large, overarching goal that I systematically worked for. But right now, I’m really struggling to find that—not only because I’m enjoying all the other aspects of the game (crafting, exploring, PvE, PvP, etc) but also because I don’t really have a good idea of what ‘endgame’ constitutes. The one thing I can say is that I absolutely LOVE zone/world events. Having a bunch of people come together and do dynamic events is the sweet spot for me now—blame Rift. And playing as a guardian in those, I feel like I’m helping.

So as you can see from how convoluted and meandering my post is, my time spent ingame is meandering and unfocused.

I know I’m asking a lot, but I’m not asking anyone to read my mind. I know that ultimately I have to make my own decisions about what’s fun and worth my time. But the simple fact is that I just don’t know what’s out there.

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer. I’m just looking for options, opinions and maybe even a couple “This is what I did” responses. Coming into a game that’s already established, and being a new player in a guild/world that’s already established, is pretty daunting. If you have links, I’d love to read them.

I’m just kinda lost.

Thanks a bunch,

Farming character

Which type of farming do you mean? Gathering mats or killing things?

Oh good point.

I was primarily talking about farming large groups of mobs for whatever component or loot I was looking for.

The more I think about it, the thief is excellent for node farming, but not so bad at solo mob farming, as well. But I guess I was just looking for some aoe juggernaut that could farm the heck out of a bunch of mobs for fun.

I don’t have any clue what the endgame is like—if it was like WoW where you farm 100 mobs to get 2 drops to make a crafting item. Or if it’s just volume—more mobs = more leather/etc.

So I guess I’m asking in the context of GW2’s endgame and what is needed to make the top tier armors/items. What would be a solid class for that?

Thanks for all replies. This game has proven to be surprisingly (albeit pleasantly) robust. Much more to learn than I had anticipated.

Hey guys,

Probably going to hit 80 on my first character today (thief) and can’t wait to dig into WvW.

I’ve been mulling which would be my next character as I had a ton of fun leveling. And while I intend to focus most of my attention on the thief, I’m looking for a second character to bring along slowly that can one day be a strong farming character. Strangely, farming copious amounts of XX or YY is enjoyable sometimes when I need a break from PvP.

Any suggestions?

Okay thanks!

So when you say map completion you mean having 100% in every map available?

I totally get the rapid transit part of it and it’s a great point. I’ll keep grabbing the waypoints, even if they’re a little out of my way.

Hi community,

I’d like to ask some input from the experienced players out there. Right now I’m very rapidly approaching 80 (level 73) on my first character—thief. I’ve tried to save my gold as much as possible, but I’m hovering around 1g right now after buying my level 60 skill manuals. I know gold will come later, so I’m not too worried about that.

What I’m wondering, though, is if there’s anything I should be focusing on doing as I get closer to 80. My tradeskills are right at level, so by 80 I’ll be able to craft a basic level 80 set of armor and jewels. I’ve done a little WvW and had a blast, but not much leveling there. I have spent virtually no Karma, save for a rebreather or weapon here and there. I’m sitting on around 40,000 I think? I make sure to finish my daily, well, daily. And have finished my first monthly—although I didn’t do all 6 requirements, just the 4/4 for achievement.

Is there anything else I should be doing? The leveling happened so fast and effortlessly that I’m not sure I’m properly prepared to hit 80. I know there’s a long way to go once I get there, but I want to be able to contribute to my group/team as much as possible as soon as possible.

For what it’s worth, I’m lagging in story—only about level 65 there. And I’ve never been able to get a dungeon group. Granted, I don’t think about it much and when I do the groups are usually level 80s, so it’s a small sample size I’m working with.

Thanks for any input.

Thief is most fragile profession, basically dodge-or-die.

The heavy armor classes are much more resilient. That’s why most people play those…

I play thief too by the way so I feel your pain.

Even with the occasional frustration and the lack of perma stealth, I’m loving it.

I’ve always been just fine with playing a fragile class as long as the DPS they dish out is superior. I’m hoping the thief in GW2 can do just that. fingers crossed

Great link!

Thanks, Karizee.

The awesome part is that I haven’t looked into any guides and that’s precisely how I play with the exception of Withdraw. I will definitely give it a shot. Glad to see the D/D Shortbow combo getting some love. So much fun to play!

Death Blossom spam is crazy fun—when I don’t fall off a cliff…

Aw crap.

I made that big giant post and left out something as basic as profession lol.

I play a thief.

I just finished the event by going in with Dagger Storm which avoided the initial burst, so in a way the difficulty taught me something. So that’s a good thing.

But still I hate feeling like I have no chance after eating a huge burst to start a fight. Heck, I dunno, maybe that’s a way to learn more.

It taught me something, anyway. lol.

Hello community,

First I’ll say I’m having a blast in this game. It’s much more impressive than I had imagined. That said, I have one major frustration, and that’s cheap, unavoidable deaths.

Most importantly, I guess, is I should say my toon is only level 61 so this may change at higher levels—it’s my first toon so I do not know.

But there have been at least a dozen times when I’d pop a skill challenge, an event boss would spawn, or something similar and I’d die instantly or be sitting at 10% HP before I can move.

I’m pretty quick with evades/dodges and think my twitch skills are pretty darn strong, but I’ve gotta be doing something wrong here—that sort of issue can’t be fun or intended, I’d think?

So rather than being a whiner that says “TOO HARD!!!” I’d like to ask how you guys deal with instagibbing? I’ve tried timing my evade for the moment the mob spawns, but that’s only decent results. The one I’m having a hard time with right now is the Soldier Mesa skill point where the 3 imps spawn. I’m sitting at just below 8khp and the initial burst from all 3 totals between 6-8k. Not easy to recover from and still do any sort of dps.

I know there are strategies i can work on—pick one off and reset it, etc. I’m not too worried about the strategy part. But what I am worried about is how to avoid going from clicking an “Accept Challenge” button to being dead or almost dead without having a chance to react.

This same issue has happened in story mode quite often, too.

I’m wearing crafted green at-level gear with yellow weapons, so I’m not struggling from that standpoint.

How do you guys deal with insane upfront damage?

Again, this is not a whine in any way, shape or form. It’s just a player trying to get better.

Thanks!

Things not to miss while leveling

in Players Helping Players

Murdertrain.9860

Hi community,

I’m just a couple weeks into this game and really enjoying myself. I’m up to level 40 as a thief and have found no shortage of fun things to do. I’m also very pleased with the character that I’ve chosen.

The problem is that I’m leveling too fast. Not too fast in the sense that I want it to take 6 months to hit max level like back in old school EQ. But fast in that I get halfway through a zone before I’m 5-10 levels overcapped. I’m an insane completionist and having all my xx/xx’s checked off on the map is important.

I’m even-level with my story and currently halfway through a 35-45 zone. Crafting skills are at-or-above-level. So with all the stuff I’ve done, I still haven’t touched PvP, WvW or dungeons.

Does anyone have suggestions as to things I absolutely should not miss on the way to level cap?

Are there tangible benefits to leaving my map unfinished and coming back at level cap to finish them? (ie. a currency gained at cap that replaces experience?)

Should I even try to do the lower level dungeons? All I’ve seen in LFG is speed run requests.

Is 40 a good time to look for a guild? I know what I want for the most part, but not sure if anyone takes sub-max level characters. Admittedly, I have not looked into this much at all.

Anything else you guys think I should make sure and do along the way to cap? I hate the thought of missing something awesome, or something that will drastically impede me at cap, because I didn’t do it as a lower level.

Don’t get me wrong, the fact that every thing my toon does gives me a crapload of xp is great. I haven’t even touched XP boosts and still feel like I’m going too fast. I just want to make sure I don’t have any regrets when the inevitable becomes and I move into endgame.

Thanks for any insight.

Oh nice. Good to know there’s at least a somewhat-viable option.

I’m sure I will find this out during gameplay but are we able to have different “specs” that we can switch between?

Thanks, Dee Jay.

It is a little disappointing. But that’s why I asked—I wanted to know

Maybe I’ll go with thief anyway and see how it goes, maybe just alter my expectations a bit. Great to hear about the lack of running 10 minutes to fight for 2.

You suggested warrior as a possibility. Traditionally I’ve stayed away from the warrior. Dunno why, just seemed a little boring. Maybe that’s changed, so I’ll look into it.

Out of curiosity, I was reading about the engineer. Would that profession be more inline with what I’m looking for perhaps?

Again, thanks for the insight.

Thieves in WvW

in Thief

Murdertrain.9860

Howdy thief community,

I would like to ask you all what sort of role a thief would play in large-scale WvW?

I downloaded GW2 today and have yet to login. So I am as green as they come. I have always enjoyed playing stealthers/alpha-bursters as my first toon in MMOs, so thief is extremely exciting to jump into.

My biggest concern stems from my only other experience in RvR/WvW: Dark Age of Camelot. I played as a nightshade and it was -so- much fun in small-scale or solo fighting. But during any bigtime RvR, I was stuck trying to climb a wall and take out a caster then usually make a long run back from the rez point.

So I guess I’m wondering if an alpha-strike build (or are they all alphas?) thief would have any effective place in WvW? While I love the thought of playing the class, I’m much more interested in being an asset to my team.

Would I be better off going with another profession if being an effective WvW player (a killer—never been good as a support) is my primary goal?

Thanks for any and all input. Really looking forward to playing Guild Wars 2.
