@ Banewrath: I laughed. Great post, seriousely, haha.
To the topic: even if ArenaNet says that they are currently not working on it, I still would love to have this too. Sure, it does not add to the game-play as such, but it adds a lot to the community / socializing and to the (all too often neglected) Role-Play community.
Please find a way to make this come true.
I have had a similar idea like this as well, just not as detailed as listed above.
I approve of this idea and hope that ArenaNet will offer something in that direction eventually.
I can tell you why even an optional Subscription fee is undesired. Because it causes a two-class society (Community in this case). If you payd attention in School about politics and philosophy, you will know that the main reason for tensions within a society (community) is very often the gap between the “wealthy” and “poor”. That applies also to an optional Subscription for an MMO, it creates a gap between Subscribers and non-Subscribers, which results in tensions. Some people who cannot afford the optional Sub will feel neglected and unwelcome; many of them will therefore leave (and sometimes their friends and families might as well).
This might or might not make sense to you, but at the bottom line; it is true, regardless.
If you are further interested in this kind of stuff I also suggest to read some Marx; he had explained a very similar scenario in his books. And in case you are biased about Marx, there are plenty of other philosophers that wrote about the same stuff.
Optional Subsriptions / Premium Accounts are kind of worse than a Subscription-only model.
Therefore I would not be very supportive of your idea.

I am about to boil in rage!
The idea of swords, magic, dwarfs, centaurs, etc. truelly belongs to Mideval European Mythology and NOT Asian Mythology.
I do not want to see any more Asian themes or I will scream and quit (just like I did with WoW)
You have been to the Shiverpeaks? Seen the Kodan boats and Architecture? It’s heavily influenced by Tibetan Architecture, which is obviousely Asian.
Besides, like Shanna said, Guild Wars 2 is supposed to be “multicultural”. Buying and playing Guild Wars 2, and then complaining about an Asian theme in the MMO is like buying and eating an Apple and then complaining that it does not taste like a Banana.
I just want to voice my support for bringing back Cantha.
Guild Wars 2 is to me the currently most amazing Fantasy MMORPG out there. I am really enjoying the whole setting and diversity on the Tyrian Continent (and looking forward to explore more of it).
However, I would also like to point out that you can easily avoid issues with the Cantha-Asian-Mix style. Just make it a purely Korean, or purely Japanese design. For one, there is no AAA-Quality MMO in the West with a purely Korean style. Nor is there an AAA-Quality MMO in the West that follows a purely Japanese style (by the heavens would I love to see Samurai and Sohei things that are not blemished by a horrible Anime style). You get a real chance here to bring something that is not (yet) on the Market. So turn the unfortunate decision of NCSoft to your advantage and bring something unique that no one else is offering in the AAA-Quality that you can deliver.
Think of what a purely Japanese theme would offer for a Cantha Expansion.
- Sohei Class
- A wide variety of beautiful Japanese Town-Fashion
- Breathtakingly beautiful Samurai style Armour
- The unique Sohei outfits that were used in feudal Japan
- Naginata Weapon
- Bamboo Staff melee weapon
- Katana (of course)
- Bring Kaineng City as a cleaned up and purified Edo-Style city.
- Add a Hanamachi District to the Major City to socialize (mostly desireable for your ever faithful Role-Play-Community (and no I am not asking for a Yoshiwara District))
- You can even add an additional “Slum” District as Edo used to have in the northern outskirts.
In addition of course mix it good with typical Guild Wars 2 style to give it a feel and a look that fits to the whole of the Planet of Tyria.
No one on the Western MMORPG Market has anything like this in AAA-Quality.
Furthermore, Lore wise the change to purely Korean, or purely Japanese would work out just fine. After turning Xenophobic and starting to “purify” Cantha, they could simply have turned all of it to a harmonic style (which follows perfectly the Daoist and Neo-Confucian philosophy anyway – which is in Korea and Japan just as prominent as it is in China).
Problem fixed.
Thank you for reading.
Thank you for the answer, I was looking for a solution for this, too. Adjusting the brower solved the problem.
However, I think it would be a good idea to re-consider this localization since it seems to cause a lot of confusion and minor issues. Or at least add the EN / FR / DE / SP option to the Main Website too, so people are able to at least switch, with a single click, to the language they prefer. Please consider this, I am sure the community will be grateful for it.
