Was really excited for this, and was hoping this would make me want to keep playing my mesmer. Sadly I completely agree with everything you said, and noticed a lot of these huge flaws withing the first 10-15 min of trying it out. If they don’t change it unfortunately I don’t know if I’m going to keep playing mesmer(even though I love the entire magic duelist theme). Might end up switching to elementalist since their new elite spec is really interesting, has really nice animations, and feels like a magic duelist since they’re using a sword.

I can not express how disappointed I was with this spec. When I heard it was suppose to be a damage spec I was really excited since I love the mesmer theme, and wanted to play a magic duelist that wasn’t just there to provide buffs. After trying it out all I have to say is the elite spec really needs to be taken back to the drawing board. Some problems I had with it were:
1) The mirror thing just needs to go or be changed somehow it feels super clunky trying to run around and pick them up which means sometimes you may end up having to stop dps or just ignore them.
2) Ambush on clones just doesn’t seem to do much damage, and why doesn’t it do something for phantasms? It basically feels like you’re being punished for using one of your weapon skills.
3)The new dodge thing I don’t like. I feel like it needs to have some sort of movement with it because you can use it to dodge however you might end up getting caught in an aoe still since it doesn’t move you.

Tried it out not impressed at all, and servery disappointed. The mirror mechanic needs to be changed or something it feels super gimmicky with having to run all over to pick them up.

Weaver will FAIL if this doesn't change!

Yeah I feel like it needs some sort of a second button or something. Kinda silly that you have to double attune just to set stuff up especially when some swaps might need to be done immediately.

Unlink the skills from the weapons, allowing free choice of skill combinations like GW1 had.

I think having skills linked to weapons is fine. However I feel that each weapon should have more options in terms of skills which can be used/swapped around like utility skills when a weapon is equipped. Not sure how how good this would work with ele unless they reworked it and removed attunements for something different though. For other classes for example sword you’d have the current ones, but then there would be say a second set that you could mix and match with while sword was equipped.

So. Astralaria.

I really hope the new elite has the same effect in it like the chrono: time marches on….since i can´t think of my mesmer without the Speed boost (that some other classes can get with their signet…i dont think we can equip both elite at the same time…why? well when you are without elite your class Symbol is a mask…when you have the elite your class Symbol is a clock….so the new elite will probaly give us a new class Symbol…and since you then can not equip 2 new symbols, you can not equip 2 elite i think…or they have symbols for mixed elites (wich would be awesome)…
(also i am waiting for the Chance that since you can have 2 weapon sets equipped, maybe you can have 2 trait lines that swap automatic when you Change your weapons…so 3 traits in tab one for weapon-set 1 and 3 traits in tab two for weaon-set 2….but this is just wishful thinking by myself…….hope never dies XD..since you know have 6 trait lines and with the new elite would be 7… )

It’s already been confirmed that you can only have 1 elite specialisation at a time. This was way back when they introduced the idea of elite specialisations. So yes, it will be an either/or scenario for all classes between their current elite specialisation and the new one.

Honestly I was kinda disappointed about this when I heard it when they released the first ones. I can understand the one elite spec, but I wish they’d allow you to use the weapons/utility skills outside of it. Have the elite spec basically only be the changes to class mechanics with their spec trees. Seems kinda silly that you “learn” how to use certain weapons, and then somehow you magically forget how to use it if you arn’t in a specific spec.

If this is true I’m liking everything I’m seeing except the mantras. I absolutely hate how mantras work. Maybe it won’t be so bad with ele, but with my mesmer they just felt very boring and annoying to use.

Did you forget the hp and armor stats? We’re the squishiest of the squishy classes. And we already play in melee range if we want to produce any meaningful damage output. Sword is such a cliche… Still better than GS though.

Sword might be a cliche, but it’s also a cliché that makes sense. Elementalists don’t have access to shields, and they hold their daggers in an ice pick grip.

Additionally, they wear cloth, so they can’t rely on their armour for protection.

Thus, they’ll need to rely on their melee weapon for defence. Of the options, the only thing that’s anywhere near as stand alone defensive as sword is great sword, and does anyone really think that elementalists will ever actually get another 2 handed weapon? 20 skills is a /lot/ for them to devote to elementalists.

Thematically speaking, a sharp piece of metal is the last thing you need when you have power over elements. Why would we even let a foe reach close enough to us so we can use such a primitive tool? We can freeze the very ground they’re walking on, we can make it unsteady, we can call earthquakes and winds to knock them down. We can even turn our flesh to stone. Melee weapons? Please… Melee weapons are for those who lack imagination.

The exact opposite can also be said. Not accepting a different style could be considered a lack of imagination. Have you never seen a battle mage/spell blade type character? They weave the elements into their weapons to enhance them, and cast destructive spells while in melee.

I’m really hoping it’s GS or MH Sword that’s melee. Spellblades(or whatever other of their many names you want to call them) are one of my favorite classes, but usually they don’t work out very well in most mmos because of how stats and such work. I feel like it could actually work well in GW though since there’s no str, int, and agi stats that you have to try to balance between.

I’d get rid of the whole shatter mechanic. Looking at GW1 Mesmer they honestly look a lot more interesting. I’d like instead of the shatter mechanic for the F keys to have stances for Mantras(never actually played GW1 so I’m assuming they’re like stances in other mmos) that build charges while you’re in a stance which can then be activated again for an additional effect which could be different or similar to the current mantras(sort of like ele’s overcharge, but not exactly like it). With this though mantra’s would be removed as skills, and could be replaced with other skills that could enhance the entire illusion/mind control spell theme of mesmers even more. For me personally the shatter mechanic and mantras have always felt kinda clunky, and I just don’t really like them.

I guess I say gimmicky because mesmer is suppose to be all about illusions yet they always seemed to die before you could properly build them up to shatter them(at least when I last played). So guardian does have a lot of build up stuff before you can actually do damage?

Yeah, in random PvE stuff — especially levelling — they feel pretty useless. It gets better later on, because things don’t die quite so fast, but … that explanation helps a lot!

Guard doesn’t have a “build and burn” cycle like illusions do, but it is heavily dependent on cooldowns and timing of skill use to survive — despite being a heavy armor class, their health pool is the size of an elementalist, so they are squishy if they don’t defend themselves well.

My guess was that your issue was more the “must use all sorts of utility and defensive skills a lot” rather than “hard to build/burn illusions for shatters”, so that’s not so applicable.

Guard, especially the 2H hammer build, feels “slow but heavy hitting” in combat, in my experience. Contrast ranger, which feels “lots of fast but weak attacks” to me. (Note: this is how I feel about their attacks, not necessarily the math of it.)

Ele, for reference, has a “fresh air” based build, which is a trait that resets the cooldown on air “mode” on crit, which involves lots of jumping back and forth, but it’s not the only build. You may find that unsatisfactory for the same reasons, but I’m not sure.

I think you would be happy with any of those choices though.

Yeah that could be it now that I think about it. Most of their stuff outside of weapons skills is almost all utility and defensives no flashy damage abilities, and in traditional mmos I’ve mainly played pure damage classes.

I think you would probably most like warrior, with my second guess being elementalist, because they have the least focus on “build and burst” in the way that mesmer does, and they don’t involve juggling the same volume of things that guard and mesmer do.

It’s really impossible to know, though, because it is all about you. (eg: I didn’t find mesmer gimmicky, so I’m just guessing about what made it seem like that to you…)

Some friends wanted to start playing again, but the only character I’ve really played is a mesmer(max level). However when I stopped playing mesmer felt very gimmicky so I’m thinking of playing something else. I’ve narrowed my choices down to the following which I think I’d like if I decide to switch: elementalist, guardian, and warrior. So my question is how are each of these classes currently, and which do you feel is more fun? Also feel free to suggest other classes(please give reasons if you do). Thanks in advance for the help!

How would you rate the HoT Fun Factor?

Noctix.9624

I’d give it a 4/10 for now. So far from what I’ve experienced I just haven’t had any fun with it. The story is gated behind insane amounts of grinding in the new zones. Also I haven’t been able to find any hearts or anything for exp to unlock the masteries to continue the story yet. Not sure if there’s a lack of a tutorial and I’m missing something or what. Usually when an expansion comes out for a game there’s lots to do, but with HoT I’m just kinda finding myself sitting there waiting for events to happen because I’m being forced to grind to even be able to do anything. Now I’m fine with grinding if there’s content, but last night I sat and had to grind the same couple of events over and over again to unlock my mastery.

Maybe if we’re really lucky Ele will get 2h sword for their next elite spec to fulfill the melee spell blade type role a lot of people were hoping that Tempest was going to be.

Why are transmuations locked?

So I haven’t played in a long time because all my friends quit, but some other friends now want to play. Was happy to come back and see a lot has changed especially in terms of how armor customization works now. However I was a bit disappointed to see that armor transmutation was still locked by type. Personally I really want to play a warrior I love their move sets and how they play however am not a big fan of the majority of their armor appearances. On the other hand I love a lot of the medium/light armor appearances, but the play style of the classes that use those I don’t care for. Personally I don’t think it would largely impact the game, and would like to be able to see armor be transmuted to any armor appearance for greater character customization. Anyone else feel this way?
