while I was puzzled by a lack of P2P trading at first I like how the new system will force people to use the TP. This makes it’s sales tax gold sync really count and will keep the economy really stable!

Unless prices settle down soon, I’m going to have to agree. It’s hard to make a profit on anything when there’s hundreds, if not thousands of the same item being sold by other players.
All ANet needs to do is disable posting items from anywhere in the world. People are using the TP as a remote vendor for trash and that’s why it’s flooded.
But Jezath, the “problem” of thousands of postings making hard to make a profit isn’t a problem at all! A large market creates price stability which is GOOD for the market and the consumer. Just not so good for middlemen re-sellers and other “merchants” who make their money through manipulation and upselling. I’m pleased as punch at the global economy.
But Tom is right, being able to post from anywhere is flooding the market with crap and leading to a lot of things being under-valued. I don’t know how these people are running out of bag space anyway; the deposit all collectibles option, and ability to vendor at every heart has kept my bags pretty empty. If you really do accumulate too much stuff then salvage it down into collectibles and deposit them!
seeing as gems are bought 800 to the $10 I think that’s the most I’d pay, but I do still want it too!!

+1 Again! I’m not as thrilled with my skin tone as I was on my sylvari before and would really like to change my glow color…. Take my money!
What if you change race while in the middle of a quest? log out in a personal instance and do it? without knowing the structure of the code there could be all kinds of weird bugs waiting to happen by messing with these things.
And asides from the purely technical issues the game is built around having a personalized RPG and narrative feel. This would be shattered by basically “starting over” If you really wanted to see all the stories, just make a new character. The only reason I can think of to change race are a bit lazy; not wanting to re-level up a craft or just log into another character that can make what you need… and not wanting to re-collect way points. Granted that latter is a bit of a pain, but I don’t feel like it worth the complications.
I’m all for changing gender and looks though!
The period right after launch has the largest amount of “fans” in it’s player base, we are also the demographic most likely to buy gems with cash. Add onto that the fact that the majority of the player base isn’t near 80 yet and the demand for gold will greatly outpace supply, whereas the supply of gems likely outstrips the demand. (Especially given that the gem shop doesn’t have that much useful stuff in it)
over time, as gold accumulates and more things are added to the gem shop the price will move up. That said, enjoy being able to guy them so cheaply now! I’m holding onto my extra gems to sell later.
Well if you want to earn 2 gold then charge 2G 23s for it I guess… The sales tax is a matter of balancing the gold economy, way points are so cheap they can’t be the only common sync. the high sales tax is also there to control speculation and min-max manipulators from “hoarding” wealth, it makes doing business on the TP costly enough to slow their processes down a bit.
You mention Gems to Gold in your next paragraph, which is what makes this paragraph all the more confusing to me. Gems and Gold are essentially the same thing. If you have a lot of money in real life you can buy an unlimited amount of gold and vice versa. So neither of them implies a commitment to the game, as a level one character with two hours play time could have an unlimited amount of either gems or gold.
While that’s true in a factual sense, its not really so in a practical one. Yes, Gold to Gems, and Visa Versa is POSSIBLE; But as the OP complained about, not profitable or practical for the majority of the Game’s audience. Especially the EU crowd who pay more per Gem than than us dollar using crowd.
So sure, I guess some really well off players with $100 disposable income might buy their way to cultural armor, but most of the time you see it in game it will have been earned because it is so difficult to just cash-buy it.
I think changing race and personal story details might be a really complicated thing o ask for… But I definitely think they should add the ability to change gender and looks. I’m bummed out I picked such a subtle glow on my Sylvari., and wouldn’t mind a darker skin tone either!
I really like these ideas! I would never buy keys myself because you’re right, the box contents are valuable. I just squirrel them away for when I get a key from my story quests to throw at them for the heck of it. I especially like the chance for a dynamic treasure hunt event.
Is this supposition on your part, or is there a statement from a dev anywhere that specifically says this? If so, could you link it?
Fair. It’s all speculation on my part; it was never stated of course that the lack of player to player trade was to increase trading post use. But I still think that deduction is pretty logical.
It could just be that the CC company tends to call about online purchases like mine does and he doesn’t want to bother the wife. There’s always that possibility anyway…
That said, I agree; gem cards at retailers would be nice for the student who handles their finances in cash, or other people who don’t have easy access to credit.

Well it certainly isn’t to reduce scams. Having to trade through mail makes players more open for scamming. For example; A scammer is posting that they are selling a rare dye in /map chat for 1 gold. Victim sees the post and is interested because the price is less than it is on the trading company. Victim sends the scammer the money for the dye. Scammer sends nothing, ignores the player and moves on with his day. It could work the other way too with someone sending the item and the scammer not giving any money.
Sure they have the option to report people through mail but I doubt they’d be able to check all of the reports especially since there would be so many because scamming is so easy now.
I have to say that understanding the way internet communities tend to work who ever falls for that is well… right where we expect them to be.
If someone REALLY wanted to sell rare dye for 1 Gold they can just post that on the trading post.
AND that’s why there isn’t a fair player to player trading system; “forcing” people to use the trading post prevents people from circumventing the gold sync and Allows the buyer to see the sales price history of an item. This educates they about fair price and keeps the game economy more in Areananet’s control.
If you and a buddy or guild mate are selling stuff to each other cheap or something you already have a bond of trust that allows you to use mail should you desire.
WOW . All i know as a customer the conversion sucks. I paid 20.00 to try and buy racial armor T3 from the market for my character but with the current converion rate. its 2 gold 98 silver so about 3 gold. 1 piece of the armor is 2 gold and some change. their are 5 pieces to the set. Soooo. should armor cost 60.00 to 80 dollars. i mean come on 20.00 should have been way more than enough.
Areananet already told us pre-launch that the gem shop was not going to be “pay to win” but just a way for people to contribute to the on-going cost of the game by purchasing vanities and conveniences. This “exchanger’s block” is in place in order to prevent people from buying end-game, and also keep gem sales profitable for areananet.
In this case, I kind of feel like Gold is more valuable than gems because they are genuinely a measure of how committed you are to the game, not how well off you are financially. And that’s what makes gold items so prestigious; they represent hard work, not large wallets.
The ability to convert Gems into gold is just meant to give some recourse to that odd un-spendable 50/100 gems left over from a purchase, and not entirely shut out people who can’t purchase gems from the neat items there.
For one I am PSYCHED an MMO market isn’t a “free money machine” for the manipulators. In an economy where currency comes out of thin air (quest rewards, monster drops) supply and demand balancing often gets too out of control since the syncs can’t usually match up; especially since many are voluntary. This makes the people who understand market manipulation very rich, which the rest of us get just a little less enjoyment out of game and Areananet doesn’t get as much financial support as it could. (And in my opinion deserves.)
