I don’t know if you meant wvw or SPVP, but this build was meant for sPvP, sorry I didn’t specify. And anyone who plays thief properly in sPvP will know you dont need or want shadow arts with rifle/sb unless you take different utilities. This build does what thief builds were always designed to do in sPvP: Have high damage and high mobility so you can gank and kill targets as quickly as possible and move to the next area, and now with the added bonus of 1500 range on all your skills, you don’t even have to put yourself in harms way to kill things.

Dunno why people are whining about deadeye being bad, its OP af. Probably taking the “noob trap” traits. Enjoy this build. I’m sure ANET will nerf this sooner or later.

utility: withdraw, shadow step, agility signet, Shadow Refuge, shadow meld. Also, Shadow flare can replace SR, but i think SR’s team value is too good.

Also, you need to understand that rifle thief doesnt revolve around stealth because the stealth attack isnt that great in terms of damage like it is for many of the other thief weapons. Just play thief like a pure longbow ranger. Position yourself as far away as possible, with as much high ground as possible then just kneel, mark, and spam 3 on rifle, most things will die before the stun wears off unless they are fast on the stun break. You have so much disengage between your utilities and rifle 4 skill, its pretty hard to die.

As far as I can tell, nobody has provided proof of being DDoS-ed and until then I think all of this DDoS talk is utter B.S. I feel like DDoS claims shouldn’t even be allowed unless you have proper proof. If you’re too computer illiterate to figure out how to set up a proper network monitoring system to actually log attacks then you shouldn’t be making claims that you’re not even sure of. For all you know, John Doe broke into your network and is using it to download the new episode of Game Of Thrones.

However, if the server itself on which the pro-league game is currently being hosted is under a DDoS attack and ArenaNet didn’t reset the matches or postpone it then that is B.S. as well.

As far as using Teamspeak to get people’s IP addresses, that’s why everyone should switch to Discord. There’s no way to get anyone’s IP address directly via Discord, not even by the people who created the servers. Additionally, Discord servers use cloud hosting and have automatic fail-over if your server goes down or falls under attack. I’ve had this experience and it took about 10-15 seconds before Discord had my server back online. So far my experience with Discord has been great. No issues and it just keeps improving so if you’re having issues with all this DDoS crap or anything similar, I’d highly recommend switching to Discord. It’s also 100% free and supports 5000 (i think) users per server.

Of course, there are always other ways (arguably, easier) to get an IP Address, but that’s really a different topic.

I’m using Nohboard to show my key presses while I’m playing to show that I’m not double tapping my reaper shroud and it still makes me exit right away even though I have plenty of reaper shroud left. I’ve had this happen to me quite often.

I’ve not been able to figure out the conditions on what makes this happen or if its just random. However, I feel like this is something that needs to be fixed immediately since it is a pretty critical bug, especially for PvP.

Matchmaking was broken in the last build.

I solo queued as legend x2 today, and got a pop within a few minutes (normally 20-45 minute wait)

The attachment says it all. Both teams capped home with 4 people and then went beast.

There is no explanation that legends can be put in the true amber & emerald matches, besides the matchmaking mechanic requiring PIPS of teams to be similar being broken.

Just pretend it’s unranked and everything is fine.

Unfortunatelu this is how it should be…otherwise you have to nerf their mobility.

Oh yeah..i completely forgot that riposting shadows cost next to 0 energy and that we swap to new legend with 100% energy. Keep acting like revs has everything for free and always available. Not. And riposting shadows wont let me get away from mobile class btw. the only way i can escape from fight is when i am not focused.

I believe his point was more so that the impacting cost of revenant utilities/skills are far less than the cost of thief utilities/skills.

Actually it’s probably worse for everyone except the legend players. I’ve been solo queueing and i have a pretty amazing win ratio right now. im 15-2 and the 2 losses were due to disconnects.

I went on a win streak too, does it mean that this sheet is ok? No, because on the other side theres people who get punished from this change… >.>

I never said it was ok. Personally, I think it’s broken and should be fixed. My point was that it isn’t UNPLAYABLE and WORSE for everyone unless the people who are winning don’t like it too.

You should try ranked if you can. I find that ranked usually gives better matchmaking than unranked. When i queue unranked, I just feel like it matches up based on the amount of people in your party not the skill of the players. When i queue ranked, i usually see pretty even skill spread across both teams considering i know most of the players that i queue with/against in ranked and what i kind of rate them in my head.

This is a bug, but you can abuse it for the time being by running revealed training. If you stack multiple stealths and since it removes 1 stack of stealth but keeps you in stealth still grants revealed you can now backstab with +200 power. YAY!

Combine that with leeching venoms* on shadow arts and you get life leech and 2 stacks of might. Pretty much 1 shots.

When I solo Q on my thief in pug matches I find more success when i play based off of where the pugs go instead of trying to make a plan. I feel that thief is the best class to do this with because we have high mobility.

For example, if 1 heads to home on foefire i usually run with him. Or if i go with the other 2 out towards mid and one cuts to far, i just go to far with him cause you’ll just get slaughtered in mid anyways. Better off to only have 1 man down than two. Ideally the last person going to mid will see us cutting to far and bail mid anyways and let them free cap it and hopefully sides will be won by then allowing a +1 on side points.

I have not been able to view the gem store for my account for some time now. I can use the trading post and even buy/sell gems but I cannot view the store itself. It is just a blank screen like its trying to load. Any thoughts?

I don’t normally like to participate in forum discussion, but ever since this patch I decided to read on the forums and see what people had to say about thieves, and from what I’ve read, it seems like everyone who has played the thief since the patch seems to heavily disagree (to say the least) with the nerfs and unintentional nerfs / bugs. I feel that a well written petition to anet to have a second look at thieves, and put in serious thought about “fixing” them will be the thief’s best chance of not being run into the ground with the next patch any more than it already has since it seems like thief gets more nerfed than buffed every patch.

I believe the post should go something like this “We, the thief community, believe that with this patch not only did we get the short end of the stick, but we had our stick taken away just to get beat with it.” Not really, but if we don’t do something ALL QQ-ING IS VAIN.

I’m assuming you meant team spvp by “team”. The only viability that I see condi PU in team spvp is the ability to distract multiple people by yourself. You can’t hold the point most likely, but even if you’re not holding it and you can occupy 3 or more people on their team for awhile then I guess it’s viable. However, that most likely won’t happen unless you’re fighting a team of downies.

It may sound weird but the moment enemies arent actively targeting a condi PU user it becomes difficult to apply your condi pressure.

But yes, you can still do it.

With osicat’s mesmer build that uses balthazar runes (i think he called it pyro mesmer or something), you can still apply plenty of condi pressure even if you aren’t being the target. I run a personally modified build of it in spvp and wvw and it’s very strong, especially with the new torment on auto attack.

Question about backstabbing...

It’s really just practice. You really just need to get the motion down and make it as fluid as possible. Additionally, the more time you give your enemy to react to you going into stealth, the more they’ll do to try and move their camera/rotate their character to prevent an easy stab.

This is what i was referring to as the “circle method”, which they might not always run around in a circle but stated above in a different post, just getting past the frontal 180 is good enough.

I wouldn’t abide by the above advice because players can react differently to engages. Learning to turn will increase your stab reliability and will reduce the dependency on in-game systems or your opponent’s failures to take over.

To reduce volatility, it’s considered good practice (playing D/D) to use Basilisk Venom before entering combat, and pre-cast Cloak and Dagger (dagger offhand 5) and during the beginning of the animation steal into the enemy. The teleport will move you while casting, causing you to instantly land BV from the CnD (or mug first if you have it traited), stun your target, and stealth you in one fluid movement, allowing you a brief window to reposition and land the stab. The faster and more fluid you are, the more difficult it will be for your opponents to react to the CC, use a stunbreak, and dodge the damage on time.

I agree that players will react to each situation different, but my statement on the “auto camera turn” was used in a method that I specifically stated “don’t do this unless… blah blah blah”. Furthermore, you address in the second paragraph that learning to “reposition” is crucial and I agree with this too. However, the way you mention positioning your character for a backstab seems to me is more about “setting up” the backstab. I never mentioned positioning because I thought the utility for auto-turn with a backstab is obvious which is: in the situation where backstab takes the longest to get behind your opponent AKA (relatively) in front of them OR eliminating the need to turn your camera should you get to the side of/behind them in stealth somehow without facing them (by you/them dodge rolling/leaping/etc…).

But I will provide an example of a use mentioned above: if you wanna talk about efficiency, let’s take your example above and assume you went into stealth in front of your opponent and need to reposition. Math tells us that the shortest distance between any two points is a straight line so running through your target will always be shorter than running around them. Even if you ran diagonally to his side, it would still be shorter to run straight through him than diagonally through him because all enemies appear to be “circular” (at least according to the targeting circle below their feet) so running the diagonal to the side would be the hypotenuse of a right triangle which is the longest side and running straight through him is the radius of the circle (one of the legs of the right triangle aka shorter sides). Either way, running the straight or diagonal through him is faster than strafing around him (the arc), and automatically turning your character for a backstab will be faster than manually turning your camera to backstab.

Question about backstabbing...

Probably the easiest way to land a backstab is let go of all your movement keys (w,a,s,d) before you backstab because your character will automatically turn in their direction to backstab, you don’t need to 180 the character/camera yourself. So you can just run like half way through them (if you have melee attack assist off) and then backstab like that and it will always land.

If you’re using pistol dagger, you can just stealth then use shadowshot and then press backstab and interrupt the shaddow stab (the hit after the shot) with backstab.

Alternately you can use backstab + steal or backstab + infiltrator signet. If you press backstab first then those, your backstab will be past the “casting phase” and to the “hitting phase” the moment you shadow step behind them.

However, with the shadow shot or steal/infiltrator signet you need to make sure that when you shadow step you will be within the double “zone”. Advice for this is by kind of backing out a little and waiting. A lot of people use the “circle” method (running/spinning in circles) to avoid being backstabbed and by doing this it makes it easy to wait and shadowstep in for a backstab.

If you need to do a “finishing” an easy mode backstab for a finishing kill, you can do this, but you’ll burn a lot of cooldowns. Stealth then shadowstep (utility) behind them then do the backstab + steal/infiltrator signet but don’t hold down movement keys after you shadow step so you don’t have to turn your camera. I like to call it the blind backstab because you dont really see your enemy until after the backstab goes through. I generally dont recommend this unless you just wanna look cool or you need to deliver a killing hit because it burns so many cooldowns. It’s pretty much 100% success backstab in the back if you’re fast.

the blind backstab looks pretty cool though because if you do the autofacing backstab with some kind of shadow step, when it lands your camera will autoface behind you again. I feel like its the “aimbot” version of backstabbing.

Here’s a condi mesmer TPvP build I’ve been testing out and it’s been pretty successful. It’s a modification of the a “sensotix” (sp?) build a friend gave me awhile back which looks similar to the current condi build that’s being used now for Mesmers in TPVP.

Basically its played like the other clone death condition build, but its a little more skillful because you have to try to get the interrupts. So if you like daze mesmer, this condi build might be good for you. It’s hella op with a 3 second haste that has 15 second cooldown paired with chaotic interruption to immobilize and throw another random condition for each interrupted enemy. I find this build an incredibly versatile team playing condition mesmer. I can almost always have quickness up when a teammate goes down for quick rez or an enemy goes down for a quick stomp because i can just hit daze shatter, throw chaos storm or shoot magic bullet (2.6 second stun on target with sigil) at rezzing or stomping/cleaving enemies and get an interrupt almost every time.

The final utility slot is left open for whatever. i personally use the condi cleansing mantra but nullfield works too.

I’ve actually only been playing this for the last few hours and team pvp, but I think it has great potential. Feel free to message me with constructive criticism on improving the build or just let me know how it goes for you.

Then why does doom + geomancy work, but not battle + geomancy? Or doom + battle?

doom nor battle have cool downs.

The only thing I can think of is that they have a priority list on which runes activate first. Doom activates first before geomancy therefore not pushing a cooldown for geomancy allowing it to activate. And then geomancy activates before battle therefore not allowing it to tick, but if this is true then I’d still say its a bug because all non-cool down runes should work the same way, IMO.

And that doesn’t even really make sense considering doom + battle sigils don’t work together and neither one of them has a cool down.

On-Swap sigil bugs?

On my mesmer, whenever I use two on swap sigils two 1 handed weapons only one activates.

Example: I use geomancy and battle. swap in combat, only geomancy activates. I use battle and energy in combat, only energy activates.

Also, i tried this with different weapon combinations to make sure it wasn’t weapon restricted and it didn’t seem to matter which two 1 handed weapons i wielded or where, only 1 activated.

I tried this on my thief, they both activated when I swapped.

I haven’t tested this with other classes.

Edit: Never mind, i must have gotten the stacks of might from another skill/trait on my thief. It doesn’t work on my thief either.

So I’m not sure if it’s a bug or it is intended to not allow certain on swap combinations. I haven’t played this game very long so if someone who has can confirm this is a bug or it is intended, that would be nice.
