Obsidian Mantle [OBS] – Sea of Sorrows

Recruiting players from Australia and New Zealand.

Culture
We aren’t a G-rated guild. We don’t police swearing and we regularly poke fun at each other. It’s a game – Be yourself and have fun – No pressure. Having said all that, if you’re generally just a bad egg and many of the guild members agree that life would be swell without you around, we’re simply just going to kick you.

Guild Hall
Lost Precipice. Building it up slowly but surely.

Rading
We have a few spots left in our first raid team but will continue to encourage additional raid teams as the guild grows.
We have not commenced raiding just yet, but traditionally our raid times start around 8pm AEST and run for a fixed duration (3 hours). Times and duration are yet to be confirmed but this gives you a rough idea.

Fractals
Intention is to push high end fractals and chase the legendary backpiece.

sPvP and WvW
We’re pretty casual in this regard but a few groups are showing interest in running a bit more of this.

Timezone
We are looking for players from Australia and New Zealand.

Voice
TeamSpeak3

We are looking for people that want to push hard for progression but know how to keep it fun. You’re equally welcome should you be more casual in nature and simply want to be part of an easy-going community.

Obsidian Mantle [OBS] – Sea of Sorrows

Recruiting: Raid Teams | Groups | Solo Players

Goal
We are rebuilding our guild with the intention of supporting individual, group or large-scale gameplay. We are creating a community that does not force you to participate in a guild’s greater aspirations but instead fosters a culture that setting your own agenda for yourself or the clique you regularly play with is perfectly fine. This allows you (and your groups of friends) to continue playing in the same way you do now while providing access to a larger pool of players to pull from and a developing Guild Hall.

Raiding
In anticipation for the release of raiding in GW2, we are inviting raid teams to join Obsidian Mantle [OBS] and to operate independently. So if you are part of a group and want to be part of a larger community but also be guaranteed a spot in a raid, then get your group on board and run your own raid team from within Obsidian Mantle [OBS]. Your raid leader will call the shots for your team – You will not be bound by any attendance or progression requirements set by a guild.

Culture
We aren’t a G-rated guild. We don’t police swearing and we regularly poke fun at each other. It’s a game – Be yourself and have fun – Play the way you want to – Socialise with the people you want to – No pressure. Having said all that, if you’re generally just a kitten and many of the guild members agree that life would be swell without you around, we’re simply just going to kick you.

Timezone
We are looking for players from Australia and New Zealand.

Voice
TeamSpeak3 – Available to everyone

So if you are a solo player or a larger group and would like to have access to a larger community when it is convenient for you, get in touch!

Living Story is bad for content-delivery

in Living World

Posted by: Omen.1879

Omen.1879

Well I guess on some level it’s been fun everyone, but this idea of the Living Story delivering the content in GW2 is an absolute joke. Not only is the Living Story simply a tool to deliver game tweaks and features that should have been included on release, but it is also some of the worst story-telling in a game I have ever seen.

Not only that, but Colin J said in his recent interview on Twitch that they’re unsure whether the Living Story or Expansions will deliver new zones.

Are you kidding me?

Almost a year after release and Anet is still unsure what their actual plan is? Let’s put that into perspective. Whether or not Anet is currently working on new zones is irrelevant because it takes time to package this content into a release and if they don’t even know what they’re doing then I wouldn’t expect any real content to be added before the end of the year.

I’m calling it how I see it here. In terms of actual, real content that expands upon the core game, Anet has released since launch:
- Fractals
- Guild Missions
- sPvP Maps

In nearly a year? And since Anet is so tight-lipped on their plans for actual, real development, here is the content we can expect to be delivered before the end of the year:
- 3 extra fractals.

That’s unacceptable – we should be well into the Crystal Desert or Far Shiverpeaks by now. I understand that MMOs are more of a churn and burn money-mule these days, now more than ever, but I’ve got to say, if there was ever a plan to respect the original game and breathe its life into GW2, the devs really should be ashamed of their efforts.

Not another one of these threads…..
Please use the search function before creating duplicate threads for subjects that have already had multiple discussions. The mods have to keep merging these and they have better things to do.
The short answer to your question is no. Nothing has ever been mentioned about adding raids or even a suggestion of them being in development or even that anyone inside anet has even given them any thought at all. You could ask the same question about adding flying saucers to the game and it would have just about the same relevance.

If you had bothered to take your own advice and search ‘raid’ or ‘raid group’ you would realize that this yields zero results.

And the amount of bugs in this game, plus how slow ArenaNet is in fixing them, is not something you see in good games.

Actually it is.

Actually, it’s not.

Do some research on how many bugs still exist in GW2. Then drill down further and find out how many bugs still exist for each profession. How long has it been since release? We’re talking the type of bugs that any other competitor has generally patched within the first few months of an MMOs release. It is, in a word, ridiculous. I actually have not seen a game with more bugs than GW2 – Ever – That be the truth

Guess you didn’t play Skyrim…and that’s not even an MMO.

Or WoW and Aion. Those games were virtually unplayable due to the bugs at launch. Some weren’t patched for over a year. In comparison with WoW TBC and current Aion, GW2 is bug free.

If Omen.1879 claims he never played a game with more bugs than GW2, he simply never played an MMO before during launch phase. And that’s a fact.

Played em all. You just got to look deep enough Like I said, do the research. OP makes very valid points.

Official explanation for temporary content?

It’s at this time I’d like to ask: Has anyone noticed that when a potentially controversial thread pops up CJ jumps in and offers a post of reassurance (or was that false hope?) but when people actually start asking questions about the things that matter he is nowhere to be found? God forbid Anet may actually have to admit that their efforts so far are completely unacceptable.

The scary thing for me is that it’s like Anet actually believes they are doing a good job and giving the players what they want…

Sure, there’s going to be the fan boys sayin, “I love Anet and want to have their babies”, but if these forums weren’t censored even half as much as they are, I think we’d have a much better idea of how the community sees Anet’s unacceptable efforts so far.

I would expect at least a quarter of the map’s unzoned areas to be zoned and filled with hearts, POIs, Vistas etc etc along with a few extra permanent dungeons by the end of June for Anet to escape being called the laughing stock of the MMO genre.

Coz at the moment, whatever you believe, that’s what they are.

So when a fan boy thinks the game is doing a good job, they’re wrong, but when a naysayer says they’re doing a bad job they’re right. What an interesting (and small) world you must live in.

See the nature of opinions is that no one is actually wrong, and no one is actually right. That’s what makes it an opinion.

You can say what you like, but there are far far worse MMOs that have come out, even recently than Guild Wars 2, and I can’t remember any that have come out in the last five or six years that are better.

Maybe it’s just not the right game for you. But then, maybe not everyone likes what you like. Let’s look at which of us is being reasonable, and which of us is stating opinions as facts.

You have done nothing but prove my opinion as, in your own words, fact, so good job on that

Colin, I was wondering whether we could get a more in depth explanation about future content in Guild Wars 2. I understand that you cannot divulge information about the actual content, but I would very much like to know about the content in terms of quantity.

I ask is because I am a huge Guild Wars fan and I have been very disappointed with the content that has so far been delivered. The reason is because we have seen holiday event content, a very lacking Southsun Cove piece of content and an extremely basic Living Story arc which has quite obviously been introduced to be accompanied by game updates and features that many people were expecting at launch.

The only real persistent content that I believe could be considered a content release is Fractals. I am extremely concerned that we are not receiving a sufficient amount of actual expanded content. If possible, I would really like to know whether there are any plans this year to release a significant amount of expanded content. The content released in Flame and Frost was played up to the extreme, with the core game at the moment almost completely in its original state.

I guess I am really just asking for the truth, i.e. Without dancing around the already released ‘post-launch content’ that is clearly not acceptable, does Anet have any actual plans for ‘real content patches’ in the near future?

We have an active and friendly community and we welcome anyone that would like to be a part of it. Around 110 members so far with generally 15-25 online at a time.

On a daily basis we have people running dungeons, leveling or hunting down some less common events. Got our first Guild group through Arah path 4 last night (some may not see it as a big deal, but we were very proud). A wicked sense of humour and the ability to laugh off our mistakes and keep going is what makes our guild a strong and successful community.

Guild Missions: So far Bounties and Treks unlocked and we do these every weekend. We have a guild ranking system that has greatly accelerated our progression as a guild while rewarding the more committed players in the guild. Feel free to view our ranks at:

All the names are taken

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Omen.1879

For me, a character name matters. I have played a lot of MMOs and GW2 is by far the hardest to get a name I am happy with, simply because they are all taken. Across six characters, none of them have a name I am completely happy with.

I think that Anet needs to start a process very soon that frees up the names that are taken by inactive accounts, or implement a feature that allows the same names to exist on different servers. I know that Guesting creates some conflicts here, but it’s certainly not impossible.

Anyone else have the same problem? Any other ideas?

I think the biggest problem with bl chests atm is that their contents are simply not worth the key cost. Let’s face it, if you want boosters or instant repairs or any of the other gem consumables you are just better off buying them instead of the keys.

That is unless you are specifically looking for a tiny guild inf boost or a potion that turns you into an animal. And if you want a rare item that is going to make you hundreds of gold, you may as well just buy the gold.

In short, no, they are not worth it.

Pure target audience strategy. They saw how westerners rejected Asian elements during Mists of Pandaria development, so they took it as a business rule and wanted to surf on the rejection. That is speculation of course, but it is so obvious …

That’s not what happened. This went down long before anyone even know MOP was coming. It was simply a cultural consideration.

Hmmm, gonna throw it out there, the fact that there was even an option to exclude Cantha because of its Asian themes, is prejudice.

The fact that expansions are traditionally so different and foreign from the base game is precisely why they are so successful, they give the player something fresh and new.

Tell me Josh, I’m wondering whether there are any plans in the future to honor GW1 at all?

Proof - Magic Find does not work

Omen.1879

Hi All,

I’ll keep it brief for those that have been wondering about how much truth there is to Magic Find.

I picked 10 locations around Tyria specifically farming Fine Crafting Materials.
- I farmed them for 1.5 hours each x 3 (30 1.5 hour farms total)
– No magic find
– 62% Magic Find
– 160% Magic Find

I did not record any increase when using MF gear over no MF gear. In some cases, running 160% MF I recorded up to 20% less loot than not wearing any MF at all. In ALL cases, I picked up more Yellows when not wearing any MF.

I have all of the data and I will be expanding on this so I will certainly post it in the future. I just thought for now some people might want to shortcut to the answer:

MF DOES NOT WORK

Omen.1879

Combat is boring as hell. I have 5 skills I can use frequently, a few more skills I can use occasionally, and an elite skill I (generally) can’t use very often at all. Are there more skills than this? Of course, but I can’t use them in a given encounter. I’m locked in and all that character diversity is gone as soon as combat starts. Just about every single MMO I’ve ever played (even the bad ones) had more diversity in combat.

I was agreeing with you until I got to this part. It seems that you suck at playing this game.

There is a button, the tilde key(~), that lets you switch weapons in combat. This way, you don’t have 10 skills to work with. You have a minimum of 15 skills! Some professions can use more significant amount of skills like the engineer and Elementalists. If you are not switching weapons enough to make the combat more dynamic, you are not playing it right.

If you are not using utilities enough, then it is because you are not optimizing to your play style at all. Instead of putting this cool situational skill. You could put more dps to your utility skill and then spam them. If you run to a situation where you need that situational skill, then that is when you sacrifice that dps utilities and slot in that situational utility.

After all, if you are not spamming that dps/dps-buff utility, then you are just as powerful as not using any utilities at all.

I don’t agree with this post. While weapon switching can certainly be useful it may not be in some situations. A player chooses two weapon sets that they enjoy playing with but either weapon set may have a situational benefit, therefore switching to them in some encounters may actually be a disadvantage. If two specific weapon sets are required to keep the momentum going in combat then the player is being pigeon-holed into using these sets, which is not right.

In theory, I think what you are saying is correct, however Anet has not nearly pulled this off for most classes and there needs to be some serious work done to the professions and weapon combos to get it to this stage. I’ve rolled many characters now and when I find some weapons that I enjoy I do find that a lot of the time auto-attack is the only option. It’s got nothing to do with playing bad, it’s just the combat and weapon mechanics simply haven’t been properly developed at this stage.

If you have found and profession and weapon sets combo that works for you then stick with it, because there are many players that do not have the same luxury atm.

Jan/Feb patches: Make or break time?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Omen.1879

Omen.1879

Yes I believe it is make or break time for sure, based on the many mmos we’ve seen break in the past. Basically, Anet just keeps things way too close to the chest in this stage of the mmo’s lifecycle. The amount of time since the game has been released vs the lack of information we have received regarding the game direction is not acceptable.

I would anticipate that Anet has until the end of February to have the game in a state to retain players. Unfortunately, I can’t see this happening due to their lack of communication on game development, let alone actually delivering updates and game features in a timely manner.

It’s sad, GW1 rocked from the start, GW2 does not even come close.

@Mouse. I strongly disagree. The events are very connected. We have a lot of effort going into the gem store in an effort to generate more revenue, but we have not nearly seen enough communication from Anet about how this revenue is intended to develop the game. This goes back to my original point that they need to be more open about their plans in order to expect that players will make an investment in them.

On another note, the “when it’s ready” mentality just doesn’t fly anymore. People are always saying that the development process can change and then timelines change and the community might get upset etc etc etc. This is business: You commit to a project, you deliver by your deadline. Think about it, you’re not going to buy a TV from someone if they say, “Yes I can sell it to you, but I’m just not sure when I can so stay tuned! Also, even though you have no idea what the TV will be like I’m sure you’re going to love it!”

There is no room for leniency in this industry because not delivering in a timely manner is just poor Project Management, simple as that.

@ Son of Elias. I think you are missing the point of the post. Sales are good. Sales are great! What I am saying is that Anet has not done enough to earn the continued support of the community. They seem to be prioritising their goal to make money through the gem store, rather than being more open with the community, which is where the money really comes from.

@ the posts that are saying we are not being forced to give our money to Anet. I know this. Many of the other posts are simply saying that what was promised for their has not been delivered and we’d simply like some more concise communication about what is being done about it.

@ the posts that say Anet is not asking for our money. Well, actually, yes they are. This is exactly why the gem store exists, they are trying to sell a product and they NEED to sell this product as a financial crutch to the game. It is simply how an MMO is maintained and updated. Having said that, I think better communication channels are much deserved by the community regarding this.

@Vaske: “….really simple, you want to spend your money or not? 100% up to you, game is F2P and nothing that you buy with gems will give you advantage over people who do not spend money….”

The lack of insight into your post is overwhelming. Though it is not the issue raised in the original post, for your knowledge the gem store can in fact give a very accelerated advantage to player’s who do spend their money. Need a condition set instead of that crit set? You could literally buy an exotic set within minutes if you were so inclined, where some players would choose to grind this out. Although the players result in a items with the same stats, the gem store can definitely provide a time advantage to players. Boosters also contribute to a time advantage. You can straight up buy gold if you want to. You can buy the hundreds of gold worth of mats needed to make your Legendary quicker. The list goes on. This truly is not what the original post was about but you can clearly see that the gem store does in fact offer some players an advantage, so your post is vastly uneducated.

I don’t agree will the fact that player’s can gain an advantage just by paying gold, but it’s the business model Anet has set up and that aside, the true intention of the post is that these customer’s ARE paying real money, so Anet could at least show some common courtesy to their fans and be more proactive in what they communicate and deliver.

To clarify, the distaste in my statement about Anet going on holidays more had the intention that I do not believe they have enacted their priorities correctly leading up to and including that event. This is my opinion that has been developing since the August release and I was merely identifying that this was the time period and circumstance where it really hit hard for me personally.

As for the statements from several people about working in the industry, let’s just say I know a little something about this and I feel that my original argument is well warranted.

@wildcode. Thanks for posting. I think you’ve raised an incredibly valid point here. I can imagine that if the coming updates do not provide an ongoing and fun gameplay experience then the result will be devastating financially for Anet and the player base will decrease again. Additionally, there will be many more people less likely to gamble their money on false promises from Anet. Come to think of it, does anyone see some similarities between Anet and the mystic forge??? Interesting….

@ThiBash. Thanks for posting. Couldn’t agree more.

@kRiza. I’m not sure how it is you are misinterpreting the intentions of the post, but perhaps I should clarify. I believe that Anet has an obligation to their paying customers to regularly and clearly define what their intentions are in developing GW2 further. I believe they need to show a greater commitment to the players before asking them for more money. I believe this is a fair request.

@kRiza. I am passionate about the GW world and I want to see it succeed. If I wanted to see a certain baker succeed I would tell them that they need to improve their bread because it is not up to scratch. As a business owner, if someone was to tell me that the product I am offering is sub-par I would take that seriously and do my best to reassure my customers. That to me is as simple as it gets for business, if you do not feel the same way, we will just have to agree to disagree ^^

Hi Ragnarawk and thanks for your reply. I would like to comment on the statement you made about having no subscription fee and getting the game for the price of the box. There is more to it than that. Micro-transactions support GW2 instead of a sub. So, where you do not generally spend the extra cash in the gem store I can see things from your perspective. However, for every X players that do not spend money in the gem store there are Y players that do, and I’d say that some of them would definitely spend a few subs worth of money each month.

So, the perception that player’s will be getting content updates ‘for the price of the box’ may be accurate for an individual that spends no money in the gem store, but generally across the community it is definitely not.

Make no mistake that Guild Wars 2 is a free to play game. Like a subscription, GW2 still has a financial support, it is just structured differently.

Thanks for your reply, kRiza krimos.

Using your own example: If I wanted to support a baker, but I knew their bread was not the best, then in order to keep my business the baker should either make better bread, or give the existing customers some insight into how they will be making better bread in the future. That’s business.

To answer what I believe your main question is: Considering what I’ve stated above, along with the expectations stated by Anet that GW2 is an ongoing and developing MMO, Yes, I do expect them to tell me what they are doing in order to retain the community’s support.

Thanks for your reply TheUndefined. To clarify, regarding how they use their money, I was more making the point that money is what develops the game, so it needs to be made clear to the community how the game is being developed, i.e. What is being fixed? What features are we likely to see implemented? As you say, we’ve been waiting since August and it’s just a prime example of bad business practice.

I certainly agree that it feels like the players are not the priority when really; Anet’s got nothing without them.

So let me begin by saying I’ve been a huge Guild Wars fan since the start of GW1 and I’ve had such high expectations for GW2. Additionally, I think Anet has created a fantastic game but it certainly needs some work.

After the Winter’s Day activities, which involved Anet pressing the play button and then going on holidays, I was excited to see the news of what was coming up in the fresh new year. However, instead I was met with a New Year’s Sale. Now, I understand that Colin Johanson has stated that they plan to release information about the coming months in the next few weeks (Source: http://guildwars.incgamers.com/blog/comments/colin-johanson-talks-2013-content-updates) but this leaves me puzzled.

Why on Earth, after so much radio silence, such a poor effort in bug fixing, the Lost Cause and really just a lack of proactive community interaction would I be inclined to give Anet more money?

It’s simply not how it works.

Anet, you need to tell player’s what you are actually doing with your cash in order for them to keep giving you their’s. I understand that an update is coming from you, but it’s just plain disrespectful to your player base to ask for more money through a sale, displaying a player’s commitment to the game, without you showing any commitment to them first.

You are in the business of selling a product, your customers are running out of ‘good faith’ to go on.

Hi All,

The Obsidian Mantle is a casual PvX guild looking to grow its numbers on Sea of Sorrows. We are a helpful group of people with a great sense of humour who are generally just here to have a good time.

If you are looking for a good bunch of people to hang out with away from the pressures of a more hardcore guild look us up.

Omen.1879

Hi All,

So I just wanted to get some opinions on sPvP to see what everyone else thinks. Historically, sPvP in an mmo has been a lot of fun for me. Whenever I finish what I want to do in PvE I could always count on sPvP scenarios to keep me occupied.

The problem I have is that at the moment there really isn’t anything to work towards in sPvP. We have a heap of ranks to grind through but the rewards are simply cosmetic. Furthermore, I’ve had a look at all of the skins available as you rank up and I’m kinda disappointed. It doesn’t seem to me that there is enough reward in participating in sPvP. If you’re the kind of person that just plays because sPvP is fun, which it is, then fair enough, however I like to feel like I am working towards something as well.

Now, I do think that not being able to upgrade gear is a good thing because that seems to cause all sorts of problems in any other mmo I’ve seen. As long as you have a big pool of players with substantially different gear there will be people complaining about it. It just seems like there is something missing.

So I put it to you good people of the Mists:

Are you happy with sPvP as it stands and why? Or,
Are you unhappy with the current system and what could be done to improve it?

p.s. We all know that balance is a constant topic of conversation, but for the purpose of this thread please try and limit your responses to feedback on the sPvP systems that are currently in place.

Looking forward to your posts!

Lost Shores: An honest review.

New Dungeon: Cool
New PvP Map: Cool

— Southsun Cove: Nice to look at. Poorly Executed. —
A great looking zone with next to nothing to keep the player interested. Feels like it was rushed. No prospect of returning to the zone… ever. Basically an almost empty map that is not worth visiting.

— Lost Shores Event: Epic proportions of bad. Poorly executed. —
Where to begin. Lag and broken content prevented a lot of players from even participating properly in the event. The most confusing event I have ever experienced in any game. Not really exciting at all. Felt incomplete and rushed. Most importantly, the final phase played out while most Oceanic players were at work, so GG on that one.

After an epic Halloween event, the best I’ve seen, I had high hopes for The Lost Shores but unfortunately it was not even remotely what it could have been. Extremely poorly executed and an incredibly bad example to showcase for the first free trial event. Put simply, if I participated in a free trial for a game where Lost Shores was the focus I would definitely not buy it.

Hopefully, after such a long wait for Guild Wars 2, Anet will not see this as even remotely hitting the benchmark for future content patches.

As a long long long time Guild Wars fan,

It’s just not good enough.
