Title says it all, I am wondering if the Pale Tree survived the attack in season 2? It seemed to be a major plot point going into HoT but while I haven’t played the content ingame ( been busy sadly) I have been following the lore and story updates and haven’t seen anything that deals with her fate. The Wiki is strangely doesn’t even mention the attack on her info page.
I would be disheartened if Anet just dropped an important event or just hand waved it away as this is a pretty big deal.
If the later episodes or HoT does explain her fate please don’t spoil, just give me the affirmation that it does get investigated.
just got done trying to scale the breached wall vista in Diessa Platteau. After a lot of trial and error, mostly error, I manage to make it to the top. “SUCCESS!” I exclaim as I decide to fight the ghost before reaping my just rewards only to have my movement bug out and I dodge roll forward OFF the top of the wall when I tried to roll backwards. Needless to say a few words were shouted and another attempt will be had but I wanted to know if anyone else has some humorous fails to share to brighten spirits.
So apparently revenants existed before Zhaitan died but simultaneously only came into being after he was killed, huh?
Sounds like Rytlock accidentally knocked over a bowl of wibbily wobbly, timey wimey stuff. That’ll be a pain to clean up.
I need a Doctor
Or I don’t know just have a disclaimer at the beginning of the story that you are experiencing events that occurred in the past much like we had in GW1. Just because we got Nightfall and you were a dervish, they didn’t change how the story progressed in the other campaigns and you could go back and do these things on your new class that was created much later in the timeline.
I would be fine with that honestly, or even a starting instance where Rytlock awakens you in the mist and sends you to the past to help with the fight against Zaitan. Something is better than nothing.
How does any existing class learn to use weapons and skills? There are no trainers or mentors in this story. You just pick up weapons and use them. You get skill points from tons of random crap to unlock new abilities.
There’s very little in the way of a lore explanation of how we learn to be Warriors or Mesmers or Engineers, so I don’t see why anybody would expect anything different for Revenant.
Warriors and Mesmers have tons of GW1 lore and the GW2 is just a natural progression of those classes. Engineers are based on the progress in mechanical design so there isn’t a need for an explanation there.
But a Revenant stands apart from those classes because it is something new for Tyria, What did Rytlock encounter that changed him fundamentally like that? Plus Colin made a specific statement calling Rytlock the FIRST Revenant. Being called the first means that there was nothing before you, so to keep the timeline intact the devs would have to explain how the other Revenants came to be because it is something brand new for the game, and made to be important because an Iconic has switched classes to become one.
Anet wrote themselves into this corner, If they didn’t make a big deal of Rytlock becoming the first Revenant then i wouldn’t be pushing so hard for a lore answer, I could have accepted the idea that Revenants existed in the fight against Zaitan but weren’t recognized as such.
Professions do not have their own starting zones. A character’s starting zone is determined by the race that was selected.
Thank you for finally bringing some clarity on this subject. I am however very disappointed in this decision as it completely wrecks lore continuity, I had hoped the devs had an interesting way to introduce a new class without breaking story. It makes no sense for a Revenant to do the same story steps that all other classes did as that class didn’t exist till Rytlock came back from the mist.
Really dropped the ball on this Anet, really wish you took a page out of the Blizzard playbook here because even though GW2 claims to be a Living World WoW handles their lore and story progression better.
Because we totally know all the lore involved in the Revenant and how it is going to be handled. How about waiting until we have all the facts before decrying this as a horrible decision and saying Anet is wrecking the lore? But no, that would be entirely too sensible.
We know Rytlock is the first Revenant as stated by Colin in an interview. We also now have confirmation that the Revenant is starting in the same racial zones as every other class. It did occur to me that Mr. Cronacher did specifically say racial zone and not story instance So I suppose it is concievable that the Revenant could have a separate personal story leading Towards the Maguuma jungle instead of Orr.
I hope something like this is the case and my mini rant is totally off base.
there have been other revenants , Razah was one(( technically)) as was Shiro ((technically)) both came back from the mists . So no its not the first time its happened; Rytlock is just the last one in a couple of centuries to have done it .
Yes those examples are all Revenants by definition. As are any PC’s who enter the mist and return. But for Lore purposes Rytlock is the first Revenant, meaning he is the first to enter the mist and return completely changed by it.
But my previous brainstorming of how the Anet devs can write themselves out of the corner still stands. I do hope they have a plan beyond slapping a new class into the game simply because they can as that is just lazy and disrespectful to the lore.

And those who dont buy expansion?

My question is who ISN’T going to buy the expansion? and for what reason. Because lets face it, if you don’t buy it you will get left behind, thats how it works for MMO’s and GW2 is no exception.
Honestly though, everyone who cares enough to keep playing WILL buy the expansion I gaurantee it

So every single Sylvari in the Pact choose to join Mordremoth at the exact same time when the Pact attacked Maguuma?
I don’t think it is even a choice, the Sylvari were MADE to be minions of the dragon. Their individual intelligence is easily overridden by a superior intelligence. The Dream is the foundation of ethics, knowledge, and purpose that all Sylvari draw from. If tampered with it WILL fundamentally change them whether they want it to or not.

We have no canon information how the pale tree turned against it’s creator and how it is that some sylvari remain free-willed, while other sylvari fall into the corruption of the dragon.
We do actually have a canon reason. Back in GW1 The centaur Ventari had found the seed that was to become the pale tree and planted it in his refuge, there the pale tree had sprouted and was influenced by the teachings of Ventari and passed on his teachings to the Sylvari. Additionally the pale tree protects the sylvari from the influence of Mordremoth through the dream. No pale tree no dream, no dream no protection.
Oddly enough the Nightmare Court was right when they said that the teachings of Ventari had twisted the true nature of the Sylvari XD

Its established in the Living World Season 2 that
The Pale Tree is the protector of the dream and it is inferred that this connection to the dream is what keeps a Sylvari safe. So if the Pale Tree dies, she is still gravely injured at the end of Season 2, Then its possible that all Sylvari are at risk of regressing back into Mordrem.

Mastery Design Lead Crystin Cox hahahahahahahahahah! Nuff said.
I’m certain Crystin Cox was hired on to work on the Black Lions gem store system seeing as how monetization is her primary background. her work on on the mastery system would be as support and not lead design.
MASTERY DESIGN LEAD Crystin Cox
missed that bit, it will be what it will be. Personally have no beef with the game as of right now so I am not worried about the future.
On topic, really liking the way the mastery system is being described and hope Anet goes more in depth real soon.
adds Mastery design lead Crystin Cox.
Soooo whats your beef with Crystin Cox? What systems did she work on previously?
The beef is how she used to work on monetization efforts for Nexon. There’s this belief everything she touches is Ruined Forever because of that. And the belief her existence anywhere near this game is proof Nexon, not NCsoft, is calling the shots.
Though if NCsoft was calling the shots, this game would have been cancelled immediately after the expansion was announced.
The idea that Nexon is somehow calling the shots is absurd, they don’t own Arenanet or Ncsoft, yes they do have a large chunk of stock but that doesn’t = control and direction of a company. I’m certain Crystin Cox was hired on to work on the Black Lions gem store system seeing as how monetization is her primary background. her work on on the mastery system would be as support and not lead design.
And for the fear mongers that think that Ncsoft is heavily influencing development need to chill and realize that Ncsoft has left Anet to develop its own thing, all Ncsoft cares about is publishing rights.

The game will be fully playable at launch. including the mordremoth encounter. Anet doesn’t release an unfinished game and update the ending at a later date.
its also possible that we might indeed have an article today seeing as how it is roughly only 11:15am at Anet HQ. they tend to do updates around noon pst I think.
Seems like IGN jumped the gun. didn’t find any other of the major sites doing a article yet.
Well kitten. At least we have some decent details. Really liking the idea that they took inspiration from the zelda and metroid series. also MUSHROOM HOPPING. I swaer I am going to have the gummi bear theme song playing in my head every time I bounce on them XD
looks neat, my question now is are we actually getting a mastery related blogpost today or did IGN jump the gun?
GW2 is in absolutely no danger of being trashed like CoH. For one thing Paragon studios was a company formed by Ncsoft unlike Arenanet which acquired two years after the company was founded so to compare the two companies is like comparing apples to oranges.
Historically Ncsoft has had a hands off policy when it came to GW and GW2 development, only concerning themselves with the distribution rights and marketing in the East.
We don’t know exactly what happened internally at Paragon studios but the aging engine wasn’t doing too well it would Seem and Ncsoft found it to be more profitable to shutter the studio and funnel money to its other projects.
Tldr: paragon studios is different from Arenanet and Ncsoft has let Arenanet do its own thing as long as Ncsoft has a cut in distribution rights.
the smart thing would be to design a revenant specific tutorial instance that takes place in the mists where Rytlock trains you and then you are warped back to the past.
or I suppose the Revenant would be a prestige class starting at lvl 80, not sure how I feel about that though.

I don’t think HoT will change things all around Tyria, that is what the living world is for. HoT seems to strictly be about Maguuma.
I do hope the Anet does take better care in future to not break older content immersion with new releases though.
though personally seeing destinies edge meet in ruined LA didn’t break my immersion because my head canon used Scarlets attack as impetus to bring the band back together.
What's the size of the expansion file?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Ozgar Heavyhammer.6701
we won’t know until the expansion comes out
Its annoying to try and be patient but Anet has made it a point to not talk about things until they are ready to talk about.
be prepared to drown in information sometime REAL soon ;-)
this expansion is much bigger than you realize.
new story, they have a lot set up that is to be explained in the expansion, glints egg, caithe and rytlocks journey, the pact aftermath, and of course the mordremoth fight.
1 new profession
9 new specializations, could make the game feel like it has 18 classes if done well!
new skills
new challenging group content (thinking raidlike content seeing as how did hire a Raid UI designer)
precurser scavenger hunt system
mastery system which affects pretty much everything in the game.
maguuma jungle region
new borderland map with brand new mechanics
new game mode
guild halls
guild pvp ladder system
also keep in mind that while twenty people created everything found in each living world episode the rest of the two hundred and fifty so employees were hammering out this expansion.
To think that somehow this is going to be small is delusional at best.
Do you think HoT will update Orr?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Ozgar Heavyhammer.6701
if any updates to Orr occur it will only happen through the living World, HoT is all about our journey through Maguuma.
Having said that, its only been 2 years ingame time since the death of Zaitan. It will take a while for there to be visible signs of healing.
So is this the end of the living world ?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Ozgar Heavyhammer.6701
It won’t be the end of the living world, the living world is a series of updates that will push the storyline towards the major expansions such as how season one and two had directly led to the HoT expansion.
I firmly doubt that the living world will have any affect on HoT, the full expansion should be available on release the same way GW2 was fully playable on release.
Living world season 3 would take place after the events of HoT and at that time Anet will direct the game towards another major conflict.
I am totes buying it
Human, I am adopting another posters Fanon that their Revenants are the reborn PC’s from thier GW1 campaign.
That idea is freaking brilliant
hmm good point, however it could be the camera angle hiding it I didn’t see a spear head.
dangit guys you are making me watch the trailer again to pause at every frame! mock rage
sorry to burst your bubble but that clearly looked like a staff to me, the way Rytlock is wielding his weapon is reminiscent of the Bo staff style of combat. if they were adding completely new weapons I would think they would have talked about them during the announcement.
75% OMG, Anet is that how you try to cover up, players lost? this wont help. just make the expansion!!!!!
The game is nearing 3 years now, price drops like this is a common sales tactic. Especially with the major announcement Saturday this sale is unsurprising.
