Morality: Cash Companies behind Videogames

I am confused…

What about when you go out to a restaurant? Are you also thinking about the guy that owns the restaurant? What about the company that makes your car, or your clothes, or your toothpaste? Everything is made by somebody, and somebody gets rich off of it. Even in purely socialistic countries there is a wealthy elite that has the power and controls everything.

Yes, but let’s say a restaurant has a lot of success, it doesn’t increase prices. Water is free, if there’s more people going into the restaurant, water will remain free.

However, isn’t a such success the worst thing you can hope for a game like GW2? the more there are players, the more there are dollars-eyed flies flying around the developpers, the more sales expectations are rising and the more cash shop is growing terrible.

Please, players, leave this game >.<

ACtually most high end restaurants that become successful do increase prices, the water then gets charged for. You either sell quality and make it exclusive and expensive or you sell quantity and make it cheap and cheerful and create a chain.

The simple issue is companies have 2 choices free to play or monthly fees and/or charge for expansions, certainly if they want to keep being able to pay for the longevity of the game. The bonus with free to play is that players can pop back for a day a month ect whenever they want without a subscription and they then contribute to the experience/economy of others.
The idea behind diablo 3 was that the company made money from the farming ect that went on by goldselling companies or at least was an attempt to try to cut them out but they made a game based mainly on gear which meant it ruined the gold economy having an RMAH. They then had to factor the RMAH into their RNG system which hamstered off all the other players who did not want to pay real money.

The gem store does not bother me as they have allowed people to buy gems with in game gold, if they were really ruthless and wanted to make money then they would not do that. You really do not need to pay into this game after buying it certainly not right now.

At the end of the day it is a company, they make money it is what they do. There is nothing essential on the gem store, you need to treat it like every other store in the real world if you can not afford to buy the product do not.

I did think the scavenger hunt ended a little bit abruptly with only a jug of karma for reward, at the end of phase 2 they said they would call you back, I thought there would be a final part maybe confronting the consortium, finding their leaders, finding out exactly what those plants did to cause the KAks to follow them home.

And Hardist, all the events were lagged out for me and a lot of people throughout, people never got the cutscenes, people got Dced, loading screens getting stuck ect ect. You also need to remember the messed about with the content as well disabling quests, the scavenger hunts were a disaster.
Alot of people spent most of the final battle staring at Karka nads as you would move forward, freeze or suddenly have 4 giant vets standing above you which were not there before

There was plenty of people asking where to go on my world certainly if they had not been to the new land beforehand(for the final event) and the box telling you an attack was underway against the ancient was misleading as you would port there only to find out it had already been defeated if you were late.

I managed 36 kills first event, looted 9 mobs and just barely made the hand in, no time warning just woosh and the hand in guy was gone, the event was not even playable couldnt see what I was hitting or what was hitting me. Canach is bugged on Fissure so that quest stops, so I quit to give them time to do a restart or whatever and I just logged in time to see the invisible attack in caledon where you could not see the mobs or target them and did no damage at all. Not a great start the guys that designed this event must be heartbroken to see their work go down the tubes like this.

I would love to see a full on house editor, the issue with housing in other games is that although they allow some sort of custom features such as paint a selection of types or internal decor, they do not allow you to build the house.
They should sell a plot of land (different sizes)and allow people to build what they want within that boundaries, you want a 3 story keep, you get to build one, a wizards tower, tree house, pyramid asura thing, charr metal camp ect. A block by block editor would be good.

Saw a huge reduction in the last 2-3 weeks, but then yesterday the map I was in was swarming again. They are now using a method where instead of trains of equal level guys they have maybe 5-6 lvl 30s surrounded by a another 5-6 of say level 60s in a level 60 area, the lower levels act as a magnet for aggro pulling in more mobs and I may be wrong but if I remember rightly do you not get better loot for being lower level.

For xmas can we get to do horrible things to the kids in lions arch, knock them over with snowballs or something if they are carol singing, I would have loved to do tricks on the kids wanting candy, pour a bucket of water over the ghost, trip up the running kid or drop kick the pirate into the water. itching powder or candy that made them throw up.

Well after my last post I went back and tried again, I moved the camera to look more down but starting getting dizzy/sick again, think this time it was because I was seeing the green swirly stuff, went away when I put the camera back to normal.
I was lucky enough to get into a small group of maybe 6 and got a lot further than before but simply ran out of time, so a smaller group made a big difference for me .

I am not sure why you would have issues with fighting the mad king, as a group just let the better people get down and throw yourself off and get a rez. I actually liked the fact that people fell off it added more fun to it, certainly when you get feared and you realize you are about to walk off the edge and can not do anything about it. The jumps in it were certainly of the very easy level compared to jumping puzzles.

So now that the holiday event has ended I can pretty much say it was well put together and a lot of fun. Certainly a lot more content than I thought was going to be involved. Had a nice build up as well.

1/treasure hunt- loved sneaking my level 30s down to pirates keep and plenty of people helped out. Lots of community working together there.
2/ mini games pretty much good fun, clock tower would have been great as a single player or if we all got turned into skeletons or even better jumping spiders.
3/ mad king did loads of runs , only downside was when the waypoint stopped working only happened to me in the group so no idea why, fixed by doing a restart, but everyone else thought that was highly amusing as I would get all the way to the bottom and the mad king would teleport up a level leaving me stuck and having to kill myself to get back up.
4/ labyrinth area was great farming and good fun rampaging around with a huge group of people. Tons of loot
Never got any of the mad king gear, I did get avian shoulders or something and also got the scythe skin from mad king chest which I sold for 24 gold so that was a great bonus.

They put a lot of work into this and there should have been at least something for everyone, what would you rather have the tired old formula of 4 quests and some new pets or hats. For the first holiday style event it was good, a few bugs certainly but most were fixed quickly enough. hope the Xmas one will be on the same scale.

I wouldnt change a thing!

Seriously the Jumping Puzzle Tower was difficult but thats what is so great about it. Its not one of those things that you do a couple of times (for most) and then it becomes a farm mode item. I loved it and want more of these types of things in game now!

As for people complaining about the Norns/Charr blocking their views and it being impossible on smaller characters, not so.

I completed the Tower on 2 Norns and 1 Sylvari. Sylvari was by far the easiest as my large Norn characters ou hit angles or areas where the camera would pop in and out on them. Sylvari just ran right through.

Yes its harder to do jumps on charr/norn but the issue was you simply could not see anything 2 norn and you might as well quit, you either need to get in front or lag behind which gets you caught by the goo. I simply could not see my guy at all, so had no idea where he was or where and when to jump alot of the time.

I gave up in the end, when i tried to do it at a quiet time the events were either bugged or there was not enough people to get the doors open.
At more normal times the runs were so full that I could not see my toon meaning it was almost impossible to judge where you were or where to jump.
Most of the charr/norn guys did go naked and so did a lot of other people however multiple times and groups there were very large norns and humans who even when asked in a nice way refused to remove even their shoulder gear and they pretty much blocked the entire screen, also came across quite a few who were doing things like jumping on the spot at the first stop to block people even further.
The first day it came out I too almost threw up and had a major dizzy spell, I am pretty sure that was because I was watching the tower , I was fine later attempts when i just focused on where to jump and never really looked at the tower. First time I have had that in a game.
As for it being fun, well it was a great jumping puzzle and a good event but the fun was removed by having so many people on the screen at once and certainly large Norns ect. They should have maybe changed everyone into skeletons or other creatures on entering to stop the issues of people not seeing anything.

I have been rather vocal over the topic of bots in the past, but although there are still bots running around I am not seeing anywhere the numbers that there was, in the last 2 weeks the numbers on my world have dropped sharply. So if that was down to Anet well done.
I am seeing a lot more of the real names, mixed group types these days or ones with guild tags so they are clearly changing tactics.

Bluestone- I am not exactly sure what you are talking about, I have multiple toons and with the exception of Orr i can honestly say I am coming across more bots than humans in alot of areas. Your idea that you can avoid them, well not if you want to complete hearts or take part in events. My last session i was in queens land, every single quest area had atleast a minimum of 2-3 bots in it some had upto 20, not to mention those in between those areas where you have concentrations of mobs.
Even your idea of report them but do not let them effect your game-play makes no sense, stopping to report a train of 15 bots or even a group of 7 is certainly effecting game-play when you do it in every quest area you go to, trying to complete a quest where every mob in the area is being killed on re spawn by multiple groups timed to run a route clearly does effect game-play. where is the challenge in oneshotting everything because of bot trains or collecting things off the ground in a spawn area because all mobs are being instantly killed.

I am really not sure what you are trying to say the op says in one zone there are tons of bots and they are not being dealt with, well if the area is infested with bots they clearly are not being dealt with.

more bots= more adverse effect on gameplay, eventually getting round to banning them does not stop their current effect on players, to say that people are letting bots effect their gameplay is rather sad, players have no choice if they are everywhere. Unless of course you think spending all day doing jumping puzzles, standing in cities or PVP is the goal of the game, because that is the only areas I have never had bots interfere with game-play.

The jumping puzzle in the asura lands with wind frost ect. took me hours on my charr most of it jumping blind, got to the end got the chest killed the boss then saw it was almost server reset time. Went back to the final platform logged onto an alt for a while and returned. Totally excited that the boss had reset and thinking the chest had I jumped for joy, at which point the dog jumped up on me causing me to fall off the platform and sending me back to the first zone with no waypoints saved.

Gold seller are so much worst than you think

I kinda don’t like the way how they titled that article “China used prisoners in lucrative internet gaming work”. Just because a few corrupted prison wardens forced the prisoners into gold farming doesn’t mean it is an official policy in China to use prisoners to score a few extra points in their GDP. The news certainly won’t label “UK used prisoners in lucrative internet gaming work” if that happened in UK. Sorry I just have to call it out :P

Gold farming / selling is extremely destructive to any mmo. I’ve seen it first hand in FFXI. I joined that game when it was 3 years old. By that time a lot of people already hit level cap. That game does not have DR or any anti-bots measure in place. Hyperinflation kicked in, prices on trading post is so ridiculous that new players cannot afford anything, not even food item that gives boost to stats. Whenever you ask for help such as a resurrection or a quest, people are expecting you to pay them, because they thought everyone is loaded anyway. It became extremely difficult to make progress at one point because I’m not rich enough to “hire” a party to help me get past a level cap quest I just quit the game all together.

I definitely don’t want to quit GW2 due to hyperinflation. That’s why I’m reporting every bots / gold seller that I see in the game now.

Rofl , china is in the headline because it happened in china and the newspaper is based in the UK, the headline in the UK would be Prisoners used in lucrative gaming network, or if they were talking about other countries the china would be replaced with that country. It would take a little more than a few corrupt guards to install or smuggle in a heap of computers and connect them up to the internet. It is not like they fit in the usual places people smuggle things into jail.

I do actually agree with alot this guy said, but I think it may also depend on what world your on.
PVP- I have tried PVP a few times, it would actually be a fun system if it was balanced but right now all our maps are dominated by 1 world and have been since the start, there is never enough players around to do anything on my side. meaning youa re trapped in those areas.
Bots- the last week I can say I have seen more bots/multiboxers whatever you call them than people, a big event might bring in maybe 20 players in a lrea, but more frequently I am coming across groups of 15 bots running minor events. I have a mixed range of levels on my chars and this is the same thing in all the areas. It makes questing and events no challenge or fun when there is a massive line of bots constantly looping through the area killing everything. It certainly was not like this in the first few weeks of the game, bots were rare in my world, seeing maybe 1 or 2 not lines of 10-20 was the norm.
Number of players, I am certainly not seeing the same amount of talk in areas(covering my 1-80 chars), and certainly not the same number of Pugs for dungeons, even at peak times. Possibly everyone is doing guild runs. But the amount of general chat has dropped.
Bugged quests, skill points ect have been fixed pretty quickly, certainly quicker than quest problems in WOWs release.
Forums , very heavy handed control, rather annoying that they respond to posts around game issues quicker than they actually respond to the issue itself, maybe they should retask some of their Mods to ingame GMs that would certainly help resolve the bot infestation, as they can jump on posts within a few minutes, yet the bots and sites of issues people are talking about are there for weeks after. This type of handling has been done in the past by other companies, all it led too was reviewers, other forums and magazines and blogs picking up on the issues leading too ill will and a sense of nothing being done from the community.
Things to do- My level 80 still has got loads left to do, although I have multiple toons, I have been playing every day sometimes all day. I also picked cooking which although the other trade skills are not that great, it has an amazing huge system. Although i would like to see an ability to create your own recipes , where you mix components to give certain buffs. Example take a pizza base and add toppings or loaf of bread and add fillings, with each one adding a certain type and amount of buff.

As for the way class system works, i still need to maybe look at certain builds for group play which really defeats the making everyone a jack of all trades in the first place as I really did not enjoy the dungeon runs as it really was a case of facerolling, death runs even with a mixed group. that could easily be a lack of understanding of tactics and possibly bad gearing and chosen skills(wrong type of stats) on the groups part.

In the end the game itself is rather good, loads to do, plenty that could be added, gameplay is fun. It simply needs tweaked in a few places and more management of ingame issues. But then I have not charged through the game trying to hit 80, nor am I a PVP/PVE only person. Still enjoying it, but the lack of people I am meeting in world is worrying.

Some of this has got a bit silly,

Chinese prisoners working- came from an interview by the guardian newspaper with a 53 year old Chinese prisoner and ex prisoner guard held at at Jixi re-education-through-labour camp in Heilongjiang province, believe what you want. The selling of virtual items is allowed in china, prisoners even in the EU make products for sale, no big deal, but not exactly what you want in terms of security for a prison.

Chinese farmers ect, even the Chinese government admits they are the world leaders in selling virtual goods from as far back as 2009.

EULA, game rules ect, they get you banned not in court, they have to be allowed under local laws as well but that will not get your account back without a heap of hassle.

Sweatshops, a sweatshop is not a sweatshop to someone who only has that option, or is lucky enough to have that option in some cases ,they do exist the companies reselling gold admit that, they also exist in many forms, from running games with bots, farming by human or even being paid on a 1to 1 contract with gamers in internet cafes. They are not just in Asia either. Some companies even consider it an outreach type of thing as they are allowing kids access to tech that they would otherwise never get to touch. Put it this way, would you rather work in some unregulated toxic factory, backbreaking agricultural work or any other horrible dangerous job, or sit in front of a PC for the same kitteny money.

Gold selling companies, many are straight up companies with the exception of breaking game regs. Some will not use bots or only act as resellers, so they do not farm them self. Others however range from game exploiters, botters to outright criminal organizations with regard to hacking accounts, phishing and selling of personal details ect. Again even those in the industry say that. there are multiple interviews going back to the launch of wow with these companies. Several of them even tried to work with the game companies to make things legit.

Monsoon, simply put yes they could ban someone for outside transactions, they do not need to know what those transactions are its the ingame transactions they could track.
If they are tracking transactions and see high level of gold transfers from one person or one group of people to multiple others then it is rather simply gold selling. Buying gold is enough to get banned, receiving gold from a gold seller is enough to get banned, they can withdraw your right to an account at any time. It is simply gathering intel and analyzing data.
Several games have not only banned players for buying gold, but also removed gold from players who had already received it from known sellers.
And yes WOW has banned people for gold buying. they have made announcements regarding how they track transactions, some gold selling companies a few years back had to change to face to face instead of mail transactions.

Other than actually catching them there is very little you can do to stop bots, even games with weekly subscriptions have been plagued. And not having a subscription system I do not see how they could fund the extra GMs.
The best thing they could do is get the community involved and create some part time GMs on each world, give them a direct line to an employee somewhere who takes the decisions as most of the bots are not exactly high tech and very easy to spot.
My world is low pop so its not a huge issue, but I am now seeing bot trains in level 40-60 areas where they use groups of 15+ bots running a path in a line between 2 event areas. I have also seen smaller groups of 3-4 farming as well. The idea of having people checking logs ect is far more labor intensive than having someone login, port to a spot, watch for a few minutes then ban.

Just to confirm 2 things
If you do not have a battlenet account they do sometimes tend to lock you after logging on after not using it in a while.
They will never ask you for details in emails like most companies and even if you think the email is a legit one never go through any links in the email.
Battlenet was hacked before and diablo was hacked a few weeks back.
For those saying they would see more hacking if arena was hacked there was no upsurge in diablo 3 after the breach, but it would be a very good place to get emails for other games coming out.

Another ban by mistake. This is the most ban happy MMO I have ever seen in my life. I wouldnt mind other than the fact that they are banning to many poeple myself incldued by mistake.

The majority of bans so far have either been:

1. Well deserved
2. A ban on a compromised account to prevent the hacker from further exploiting the account

I have seen very very few cases of accidental/unwarranted ban.

Then you should open your eyes mate.

and you need to stop believing every random person on the net. It’s been proven time and time again with this game and other games, that people can and will lie through their teeth to make themselves look more sympathetic when they don’t deserve it. I’m not saying nobody was unjustly banned, some people likely were, but the number is not huge by any means.

And in your specific case, I don’t know whether or not your ban was warranted. IF you’re telling the truth, then it wasn’t, but throwing insults around the forum will make whoever is assigned to your ticket less enthusiastic about helping you. I’ve worked support before, despite many companies’ code of conduct, people are people and we are always more willing to go out of our way to help nice/polite people than people we see as annoying. I’ve seen many people in support(myself included) work overtime for no pay to help a particularly nice person who was having a problem just as often as I’ve seen people leave a ticket until the next day, or leaving it until the SLA absolutely demands that they deal with it simply because the person who raised the ticket was being incredibly insulting with their comments.

How many games have we seen where bans were issued due to failed systems? How about every single one. Prime example the post you quoted was deleted . To talk about how customer support are more than willing to go out their way to deal with friendly complaints is a joke. Every game I have ever played since the first online games has had issues where more faith was put in faulty detection systems than common sense. 9/10 the first thing customer support does is spam some non related copy and paste reply. Your job as customer support is not to ban someone who is annoying it is to do your job no matter what. And to say that bans are not common through issues with their software has to be the biggest joke of the century every major company has had issue with false bans, people have every (removed kitten prefer gerbils) right to be angry if they have just been banned after a week when they get some BS explanation and no investigation.

Your 3 digit code was not saved, it would have verified the card on its first inputting of your cc details and all other requests to your card provider would not have used it. It is a very common ongoing billing process used for subscriptions and recurring charges. But you are not the only one to have had this happen and even though other games used this system it is not the most safe one to use when ingame items purchased have real life money value.

Why are Gaming Companies Exempt?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Pictish.3410

Pictish.3410

I also don’t believe ArenaNet has been hacked. Why? Three reasons:

1. They are honest enough about such critical issues, that they would have informed us/warned us if that were the case.

2. See the game updates: if ArenaNet’s database had been hacked, why would hackers still bother testing logins for thousands of email addresses that do not have a GW2 account? That’d make absolutely no sense at all.

3. Amongst all the thousands of users that have been hacked, I have not heard of a single case where someone had a unique email address that they only used for Guild Wars 2, and still got hacked. If ArenaNet’s database had been hacked, then many of those users would have gotten hacked as well.

1/ It is not the case of honesty it is the law, but that does not mean they could not sit on the info for a little while. But you are correct they have been 100% upfront with the number of hacked account requests they have had, even giving exact numbers to the gaming press.

2/ There is more than one group of people out there selling information, so one group of hackers doing something is not really indicate they all are. Remember this is not one group of kiddies doing it for fun hacking of game sites has been linked with organised crime when CC details and money is involved.

3/There are reports of that all over every gamesite read the comments, there is also reports on the forums of people doing that and still getting hacked, just because you password is unique or you only use your email for this game does not mean you are immune from other methods. A unique email and password is a good idea, it is not a cure all.

Why are Gaming Companies Exempt?

Posted by: Pictish.3410

Pictish.3410

There is no need for them to hack into GW2 databases because there are still plenty of existing email and password combinations floating around for them to try.

If you found a set of keys outside a row of houses, you’d go through those keys first before you tried picking any of the locks. It’s easier and faster to get into someone’s account (or house) if you already have a list of emails and passwords (keys).

I am not surprised Blizzard eventually was hacked. But I don’t for a second believe ArenaNet has been compromised at this point in time. If they had been, there would be a lot more reports of compromised accounts considering they sold over a million copies already.

But I do find it amusing to read the conspiracy posts and threads. lol

A million copies and over 20k hacked accounts so around 2% at monday last week. That is pretty much the norm for any launch lets see what wave 2 of the hacking brings.

Frostpyro, you must not be aware that there are many many many lists of emails and passwords floating around the web and shared between people who try to maliciously access those accounts. If your GW2 account was compromised, your credentials are on at least one of those lists. This is not an issue of ArenaNet being compromised. This is an issue of people not being secure enough with their own credentials.

Last night, just for kicks, I did some searches online and found around a dozen long email and password lists for various sites. I don’t mean a few logins, but a lot in each list. This was just after a few minutes of searching.

There is no need for anyone to bother trying to get into ArenaNet’s databases when login credentials for various insecure sites are freely available for anyone to use. And with people using the same login credentials from site to site, it’s quite easy to find many valid logins for GW2.

If you don’t want to be compromised, do what ArenaNet and others have been saying repeatedly. Use an email and long password you don’t use anywhere else, and don’t use that info anywhere else, ever again. And check your pc for malware.

My account data has not been compromised ever, as far as I know, and my GW2 data isn’t going to be compromised. Why? Because I use a unique email and password, and I don’t respond to fake emails, and I regularly scan my pc. I am proactive about my account security, but many players don’t do the same thing, and they are stuck paying the consequences of their own actions.

Simple solution lock accounts after 3 tries and send an email to account holder, and yes there clearly is reason for people to get into arenas accounts just like there was with battle.nets, That is where lists like these come from as well as other sites. Just remember blizzard never ever said when they got hacked just that they found out they had been hacked meanwhile everyone was shouting about how it was the players faults because no on would ever bother to try to hack blizzard. People hack governments for fun, when there is money involved to say there is “no need” for them to hack the company itself is not exactly true.

But to answer the question in the title, gaming companies are not exempt, they are under the same rules and laws that any company that holds data on you is under.

Hi Cheiron,

As read from an earlier topic, I believe a gentlemen lost $250 because ArenaNet saved his CVC credit card number (Without permission) when purchasing gems from the gemstore. His account was then hacked and $250 worth of gems were purchased.

Now off topic a little, this game has had one of the smoothest launches of any MMO… but people are being hacked left right and center and they are indeed getting a blank account back! Its a little silly you must admit simply because some of those people have been playing since pre-purchased launch and if I had a level 80 that was deleted because someone in china hacked my account… well… it wouldn’t be very nice xD And I’d want some form of compensation but thats my personal opinion.

they are not saving CCV information, what they have done is set up a subscription style system where any further transactions do not need the CCV. Same result though.

I tried both ways from inside account and through forgotten password.

Hi there ,
I posted yesterday on a topic and while writing the post I was afk for a few mins, I finished the post, posted it then realized the person i was replying too had already said pretty much the same thing while I had been typing the post.
So not to be rude and look like I was ignoring him I posted , “you bet me too it”, that post was infracted by the mod for not being relevant, which then led to the guy I was speaking to saying I was not reading his posts which was the whole purpose of posting it in the first place.
How do I appeal and do infractions have a penalty?
The email provided in the PM forums@arena.net. does not work.

@Arghore that makes no sense as in cooking you need alot of lower level stuff to make other stuff later on, so if you skipped them until later you would not be able to make other higher recipies if you did not discover earlier.

I am pretty sure the cooking thing is not a bug as I have items that are within my level going red and several items refusing to show at all and some of these items I have never cooked with at all, I am also getting other items which people say are showing not showing and vice versa it only started since last night. Also has cinnamon sugar pile been removed from the game.
