I just. . . can I just remind people that the reason we care so much about this stuff and make such a fuss is because Anet’s made a game that, fundamentally, we love and want to keep playing? Can we take a moment to focus on the positive? Please?

I know this has been done before, but there’s nothing of the sort at the moment, so. . . I’d just like to make a space where we can talk about the things we like about GW2.

Personally, I’ve met someone really special here, and I wouldn’t have found him without the megaserver update, faulty and buggy and inconvenient as it is. I’m excited about our friendship and our continued adventures in Tyria!

What about you guys? What are some things you’ve enjoyed about GW2?

When will we see dueling?

I would adore open world dueling! So long as I can toggle of duel availability like some people have mentioned, I feel like it would help a ton with the feeling of a dynamic, living world. Wandering around the map and encountering duels, cheering people on, etc. . . . this sounds like exactly the world I would love to inhabit. PvE lovers can keep focusing on PvE, but with the added bonus of spectating random events that are truly random, because they are initiated by other players, not some algorithm in the system. Oh my lord, this entire idea is wonderful! I might even eventually work up the courage to toggle “available for duels” at some point!

If it’s true that NCsoft is kitten about having their culture misrepresented a little, then once again, I am ashamed to be Korean. I think any culture that feels it has a monopoly on its aesthetics in this day and age is backwards and selfish and downright elitist.

I’ve refused to make a human character to this day because when I play human, I want to play something closer to me, and it’s downright impossible to make a character who looks more than 25% Asian. It’s kind of sad that a Korean-owned company is preventing Koreans and other Asians from feeling like a part of the world they desperately want to inhabit.

Kurrilino, please stop claiming that everyone who disagrees with you is a teenager with no interest in the lore. Those who are arguing against you are very much concerned about the lore, which is why they are trying to correct your faulty understanding of it.

On an unrelated note, if you are going to insult peoples’ intelligence, kindly work on your grammar, spelling, punctuation, and language usage first. Thanks.

What if there’s an option to block their duel requests?

Every single time this comes up in an MMO, those who don’t duel are automagically labeled a carebear. There are plenty of fights in WvW and sPvP is over there —-—->

Labeled by who? The majority of the GW2 community is pretty decent. Yeah, a few kittens are going to namecall, but they can be blocked and reported. A good MMO community kind of just runs toxic players out of town. That’s what I’ve seen in GW2 so far. I’ve seen a handful of toxic players, but every time, the rest of the map tells them to take a chill pill, leave people alone, stop harassing. People stand up for each other. I don’t see why this would change just because of dueling.

I’m just glad there is finally a fix for exploiting dungeons

Fair enough! Dungeon cheats would be kind of a pain.

So I just bought another character slot and I’m having issues with the character creator. All races/genders except for norn male and both male charr are having this issue where, when I go to edit the face/head region and it zooms in, the head moves to the bottom of the screen. (see attached images) It’s the worst with asura male and female, and norn female.

I’d really like this fixed so I can throw more money at this game make more characters!! Thanks!

The very fact that an issue has been made of Jory and Kas’s relationship is a pretty clear indication that their relationship needs to be there. It’s only an issue if you make it one, and people seem pretty determined to do so. They’re another two characters who love each other. There doesn’t have to be a motive. No one questions whether the heterosexual relationships in GW2 are for brownie points or money or fanservice. Just the gay ones.

Jory is a person. Kas is a person. Jory and Kas love one another, gender be kitten ed. End of story.

Zelanard, the thing is that the megaserver system puts you on maps with people it considers relevant to you. Most RPers are from the Tarnished Coast server, so they get put on shards with other TC players. If you are friends with a lot of TCers, you are more likely to get put on the same maps with them.

If you’re interested in getting involved with RP, or even with just seeing it around the game, I’d advise you to check out guildwars2roleplayers.com and touch base with people there. You can find people to friend, guilds to join, and generally get some contacts within the RP community. If you party/guild/friend up with several of them, you’re more likely to run into our sort throughout the game.

Just a couple of tips! Have a nice day!

GW2 in China; any hope of Cantha?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Raeysa Penrose.8450

And to be fair, GW2 is set in a fantasy world, so I really don’t see the need to represent all real-life people in it.

Agreed, but some added diversity to the human population would be a welcomed addition for most players.

If Caucasian people can be so richly and widely represented, why not Asians, Africans, Arabics (wow never realized we all start with A’s O.O), Native Americans (both north and south America), etc.? The world is diverse in species of people, so why not diverse in races?

Besides, it’s not like Tyria doesn’t have those races to start with. GW1 is where Cantha and Elona come from; they’re not just some made up idea of ethnic fans. They’ve been cut from GW2 and many of us feel slighted and unhappy about it. We’d like our cultures to be important too. That’s not a bad thing. We’re not going to be mean or rude about it. We just have our requests, like most players do.

I’m a huge fan of this update though.
Because of this anet made Finally a fix to the exploit sellers of P1
(the one who sell it for +- 1.50G and keep boss at 1%)
This brings good stuff for Legit Solors who will have now not that muhc competitions from exploiters who “solo” P1 in 5-10 mins

What if they just removed those sorts of exploits from dungeons, but left the open world content intact?

I know, but instead of fixing the map when it comes to getting into the aquarium and other places they imply that it’s a pathing error by “fixing” tele/shadowstep and the like. They did the same thing by “fixing” farmable events. Instead of putting a cast on a broken arm, they just amputate it.

Yeah, it’s really frustrating. :/

GW2 in China; any hope of Cantha?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Raeysa Penrose.8450

Raeysa Penrose.8450

Have you ever read up on why the Cantha District in DR was originally removed?

I tried to find some reasons. I believe what I heard was that it was to avoid offending the Asian demographic with their own representation of an Asian continent. Is this correct?

It was speculated that in order for GW2 to launch in China, they had to remove any references to Asian culture. So if we have any chance of getting Cantha, GW2 has to leave China completely. Which we know is impossible now.

Ugh, that’s what I thought. That’s just taking racial sensitivity too far, and I don’t know whether it’s China that’s demanded such removal or Arenanet that’s being paranoid about offending them. I don’t know, and I wish I did. Different cultures should be celebrated, not avoided.

Do You Enjoy Massive Zerg Content?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I absolutely adore zerging. I’m kind of a painfully shy person in game, so it’s really hard for me to party up with people. Finding a zerg and running with them allows me to sort of ease into the social aspect of the game, so I have someone to play with until I work up the courage to speak up.

Also, the feeling of running with a pack is kind of glorious. Call me crazy, but I have howled like a wolf IRL while running with zergs from one point to another!

EDIT: I’m with Vol. MMOs are all about the massive numbers of people. “Massively Multiplayer.” 5-man instances work for Torchlight II, but I play MMOs for the people.

Raeysa Penrose.8450

Okay, so there have been some updates in the past that I have been less than thrilled about (cough cough leveling system cough), but up until now every change has been something I could respect in concept, just not necessarily in implementation. This, however, is just not okay.

Shadowstepping/teleporting to otherwise inaccessible locations. Why would you “fix” this? Of all the things you could have worked on, you picked this?

You’ve admitted that the trait system as it stands is less than perfect and needs some reworking, you’ve completely removed entire arcs from the personal story as if that were acceptable, you’ve changed the leveling system so that it is actually tedious where it wasn’t before. These areas could all use work. These areas have actually been harmful to the game in some small part. Accessing interesting and unique views on the world you’ve worked so hard to model and show off? Absolutely pointless, actively harmful to certain player communities, and altogether an unprofitable, unpopular, unwanted change.

Guilds have been formed around hide-and-seek and exploration activities that were inherently based on the shadowstep/blink exploits you have just removed. Roleplay communities have found beautiful spots to interact without disruption. People have made friends, created events, formed communities all based around friendly competition as to who could find the most interesting spots to play. There have been absolutely no gamebreaking or “cheating” aspects to this feature of the game, and removing it as an option actively moves against your philosophy of “play how you want to play.”

I know it doesn’t mean much as I’m just one kid out of thousands of players, but dear god, I have been the most active proponent of this game in my social circles. I have dragged nearly every friend I have into this game, become a foghorn every time the game went on sale, gone on endless rants about how amazingly the game continues to grow and develop. Every change I have seen has been actively furthering the beautiful aspects of GW2, even if sometimes they have taken some tweaking to pull off correctly. This, however, is a very negative step that I dearly hope you are not serious about.

Please, please, please reconsider. Thank you for your time.

I don’t know about you, but flashy, dynamic particle effects are something I consider very important when choosing a game, and I am quite sure there are many others who feel the same. Not everyone plays just for the technical side of the combat. Some of us love the aesthetic side too. We love the feeling of casting flames and lightning at people. The flashier the effect, the more powerful we feel, which is for a lot of the reason to play the game. Real life is a little sad and unrewarding. GW2 makes us feel strong, and particle effects are an integral part of this.

Feedback/Questions: MegaServer

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Raeysa Penrose.8450

Honestly, I play GW2 in a less efficient, level-everything-and-get-all-the-things way than your average player, so I haven’t experienced the kind of trouble people are talking about with the megaservers. I won’t pretend to know much about that.

I just wanted to drop by and say thanks. One of the biggest disappointments I’ve found in nearly every MMO I’ve ever played has been how strangely empty maps tend to be, despite the term “massively multiplayer.” It’s horrible to get stuck working through quests on an empty map, calling out to an empty map chat, and just trying to grind through until the next populated map.

It’s so, so nice to see people on the maps again. I finally feel like it’s worthwhile to run around Orr! There are people in the intermediate maps, not just starter zones and endzones. Every time I see a stranger on the map, whether or not I am inclined at the moment to say hello, I just feel a glow of happiness that I’m not alone. I know the megaserver has a lot of flaws, but I trust those will be worked out in time. It’s a new system, and even good changes have always been met with some opposition in the beginning. Keep it up, Anet!

The main issue is that Cantha is a combination of different asian cultures, and I don’t think China (or Japan for that matter) would like to be clumped together with each other, due to history and stuff like that.

:( I guess I could see that. My parents discouraged me from having Japanese friends, despite the fact that the Japanese occupation was a looong time ago. The way they acted, hostility was a matter of ethnicity and genetics. Why are people so quick to distrust and hate each other?

sigh So this whole issue is a result of human inability to get along. As usual. This is why we can’t have nice things, etc. etc.

When will we see dueling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Raeysa Penrose.8450

Raeysa Penrose.8450

Can we just all get this straight?

Open PvP is a server where anyone can kill anyone. This server sounds like hell to me.

Dueling allows two players to face off. It does not require anyone else to get involved. This is not open PvP.

Many of us want this to happen in the open world to make it more dynamic. Seeing two people dueling while you run around PvE would more or less be like running past some of the dynamic events; you don’t have to participate, but it looks cool and makes the world more randomized and alive. If you are okay with seeing centaurs attack cities, why are you opposed to seeing duels? None of these things affect you unless you choose to participate. In fact, the centaurs are more likely to attack you.

GW2 and Other MMOs - Differences in Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Raeysa Penrose.8450

Raeysa Penrose.8450

compared to other mmos I played:
…snip
social: having no need to form a group means that you don’t actually talk to anybody. People just move from point a to point b killing things. In those other mmos, you have to socialize, form groups, survive hard experiences with other people, it helps create in game friends, of which I had many in WoW. I have 0 in GW2.
…snip

I just wanted to chime in on this as I feel the opposite for reasons discussed before. I’ve played some other mmos where you have to group up. Often times, the biggest reason I’ve found to group wasn’t to take down tough baddies but to share a kill or objective. That forces socialization but it has, for me and some others, a strong drawback to it. Your success comes at the price of the failure of those around you. GW2 is not about that. You group because you want to, not because you have to. This was a key tenet that I feel they delivered on spectacularly. When I first started playing GW2 to today, I still get that feeling of comraderie from the entire group surrounding me when we take down an objective and not just from my 5-8 person party. We talk and socialize and sometimes strategize but if others are silent then that is their choice. I’m not saying every fight requires you to talk to each other and some open world objectives definitely could be made tougher in an enjoyable way. I’m just saying that my experience has been different, you know, for comparative analysis.

Thanks for voicing this. I don’t like being forced to socialized in real life, and I don’t like being forced to socialize here either. I’ve developed some very tight friendships in GW2, but they have been of my own volition, pursuing parts of the games that I enjoy. The problem with trying to make social interaction important in order to do well in the game is that not everyone would necessarily group with people they get along with, and they could come out of the experience burned, rather than encouraged. I think socialization is a very personal, individual experience and it’s important for it to be allowed to grow organically. On that point, at least, Anet’s got it right.

I would say that the pain of loss is a very good opportunity in the coming chapters, and that will be much stronger if there is an actual partnership between the two characters, and there are already hints that something will happen to Kasmeer.

It’s anet, when you start to like a character, they kill the character off.

It’s probably one of the oldest literary devices for getting the audience emotionally invested in the story.

Except other stories have other characters i’m interested in besides the one character they decide to kill off.

Obvious solution: Kill Trahearne.

Things that are not gamebreaking, things that are not dungeon cheats. Jumps that merely enrich the gaming experience and do not detract from it.
