The case for a Revenant story

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

So as I was researching and trying to discover what to name my revenant when HoT gets released, I came across some things and sites that likely heavily influenced the world of Tyria. One site in particular Nook of Names, has a plethora of name origin, meanings, and associations. I explored the name Arboreus from that site which led me to Norse mythology.

I followed Arboreus (tree) through wiki Celtic links and some words, phrases, names, and such were within those texts. I found Bifrost, which is a bridge; the Norns; Wild Hunt (lol…. no kidding!); a guardian tree or warden. That brought me to a wiki page and where I found (v?rðr). “warden,” “watcher” or “caretaker”): a warden spirit, believed to follow from birth to death the soul (hugr) of every person. The warden of a dead person could also become a revenant, haunting particular spots or individuals. In this case, the revenant warden was always distinct from more conscious undeads, such as the draugar. WOW!!! The first zombies! But now I was getting somewhere.

With the opportunity for Anet to introduce a new story, a revenant class by definition, will have to die. And whoever is the one to kill them, “… folklore depicts revenants as returning for a specific purpose (e.g., revenge against the deceased’s killer), in most Medieval accounts they return to harass their surviving families and neighbors.” And if you follow the “draugar” line “The Old Norse meaning of the word is a revenant.”

Here’s something else I found that’s interesting. "A draugr’s presence may be shown by a great light that glowed from the mound like foxfire. So, more uses for foxfire maybe? And the revealed mechanic by Anet on April 2nd found here says that, “The Brink’s meta-feature is the increased importance of the day/night cycle; things are tough enough while the sun’s up, but once it sets, the Mordrem redouble their efforts and the landscape becomes even more dangerous.” Also according Norse mythology, “While the draugr certainly preferred to be active during the night, it did not appear to be vulnerable to sunlight like some other revenants.” Hmmm…. interesting!!!!

So with the disclosed attribute of the ranger specialization as a druid, it seems plausible that the revenant’s specialization could be something like the draugr. The draugr are much more powerful according to mythology, with the ability to vanish into smoke, pass through rock, superhuman strength, enter dreams, cause disease, etc.

So there it is! My anticipation rises.

Are you rolling Sylvari for HoT?

I have decided that my new toon will be a male Sylvari because of the association with the Modrem (I find irony amusing) that has been disclosed but also because of an often forgotten part of the Sylvari story where a character by the name Malyck is sought out by the Nightmare Court as some kind of harbinger. He was not born of The Pale Tree nor did he have a “dream” or “nightmare”. As a Sylvari he would have to be born of a tree, however it’s inconclusive who or where that tree is. My gut feeling tells me that The Pale Tree knows more but hasn’t disclosed it for reasons unkown. The last thing we know of Malyck is this:

… Malyck determines to head west, into Magus Falls, to find his people and tell them of the Grove, and to return with an army with which to fight the Elder Dragons.

What have you found to be the most convenient push to talk button while in battle? Especially for those of you who use this mouse.

Is there a button or key that you have found you can keep pressed while doing the rest?

I don’t know if you know this, as I didn’t discover it until months after getting the mouse, but there’s actually another click button to the right of the right-click button, which your ring finger should be resting on. I’ve been using that for PTT on all my games.

Yeah, it was that button that drew me to the G600 in the first place and specifically for that function. Since you mentioned it, I just went back to the settings and remembered why I went away from it. If I assign that button (G-Shift) to a keyboard key or function it interferes with chat (repeated characterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) or some other in game function. The best thing I’ve found so far is assigning it to middle-click (or wheel click) but if I’m out of game the auto scrolling kicks in………. I just went back, again, to search on disabling the auto scroll. Finally, found it was a check box in Firefox advanced options to disable it. I had been searching all this time as though it was a Win7 setting. So my push to talk button is now that 3rd button (G-Shift) with nothing else associated with the G-Shift button. I’ll try that out.

Thanks Andred for causing me to try again. +1

So, I’ve been using the G600 for a couple years now and haven’t really been utilizing the thumb buttons much (G10-G20). G9 I have been using for my push-to-talk. However, recently I’ve been working on my engineer skills (kit build) and because of all the change-outs of your skills and the speed at which they need to occur, it seems to me I really need to start utilizing the other thumb buttons. These are the keybindings I have found that has worked well for me until now. Also, I am using the G510 keyboard.

Q & E – strafe

WASD – the ~ swap key has kept me from moving over to the ESDF positioning (that and years with DOOM (number attack) and Unreal Tournament)

RFC – 789 respectively

B – interact (thumb)

6(heal) – my left thumb comes up since jumping has no real bearing on dodging, blocking, or misses

F keys – no change
0 elite – usually my left hand again and I do need to look down to hit that

now for my work-arounds:

I’ve gotten pretty good at moving my hands all around the keyboard as in:
If I need to move my left hand up to the numbers I can move my right hand over to the arrow keys for movement. When I leave the mouse I leave the cursor right in front of my toon for targeting purposes. Then switch back. It’s not optimal I know. This has been sufficient for pve and 65% of all wvw situations for the other professions.

I’ve started utilizing the G buttons with the engi so as to kite better. That leads me to some questions for you guys.

What have you found to be the most convenient push to talk button while in battle? Especially for those of you who use this mouse.

Is there a button or key that you have found you can keep pressed while doing the rest?

Any other thoughts/suggestions?

I seem to be in the minority here but I actually enjoyed the fight. The first phase with the tentacles was easy enough to figure out; however, I quickly died in the second phase because I was running all over the place. That was the only time I died though. After respawning, I played much more carefully and was able to figure out the mechanics of the fight on the go. As a zerker greatsword warrior, Whirlwind Attack helped me tremendously in avoiding damage. I killed the dragon within two burn phases.

I also managed to get through the entirety of the fight without stability, so I wouldn’t say it’s a must-have. You definitely need a stun break though.

Some tips:
- When the explosive plant bulb things appear, you’ll notice that they’re always in pairs and are attached to each other by a vine. If you run between the bulbs, straight through the middle of this vine, you will trigger both bulbs to explode without being knocked back/damaged. This is an easy way to clear the bulbs so you can navigate the room more safely.

- It’s possible to light the fires without relying on Braham’s stability bubble. Since the dragon’s paw attack (the big AOE circle that can interrupt your cast) has a cooldown, you just have to “bait” the dragon into using it, and then quickly run and light the nearest fire. You can still be interrupted by the dragon’s other attacks, though I’m not sure if the crumbling ground attack specifically targets the player though.

I was fairly fired up about the difficulty of getting the ring of fire lit when I finished it. I was using a zerk warrior with greatsword, solo. I didn’t use utility stability or figure out how to kill the shadows. What was difficult about it was the period of time I was waiting for the fire to be launched over the wall. I counted about 7 seconds of standing and avoiding waiting for the fire. If it were even 2 seconds sooner on the timer I probably would have completed it about an hour sooner. So, it is doable. But, since I now know that the shadows have a vulnerability, that changes everything. What I did with 5 of the 7 seconds was went around and just charged the bulbs so to explode them so that when the fire was finally available, I had a straight run.

So in short, stay in the fire and use a projectile to kill the shadow then go light the ring and when your waiting on your fire reinforcements discharge the bulbs.

The quest stands upon the edge of a knife, stray but a little and it will fail. But Hope Remains, if friends stay true. — J.R.R. Tolkien

This quote from Tolkien is the inspiration for the name of this guild, because we want to create an environment that is filled with friends that are true to each other and the enjoyment of the game we play.

We are an 18+, social, and casual guild who love the game and ALL of its content.

If you are a person who does not want the game to feel like a job or your enjoyment of it to burn out due to the drama and rigors of hardcore raiding then you may want to consider this as a place to call home.

If you are a person who is looking for hardcore raiding or the next ultimate “leet” piece of gear this is NOT the home for you.

We want to enjoy killing the big baddies with a group of friends in a relaxed environment where we can share successes and failures together.

Let us know if this sounds like a great place for you and yours!
