Most Germans also speak English.

yeah.. eem.. no!

you’re wrong, they do, over 50% of the german populace knows how to speak english just fine. they just don’t want to. they prefer it that you speak german. bow to your overlords and all that jazz..

I’ve been to Germany many times, the country has the higher % of non-English speaking people. (Probably of the whole Europe).

Everything is translated to German. Even the TV has every single show with German voice-over…

Your 50% is probably more of a 20-30%, and that only to the big cities because of work..

@Both of you
I honestly don’t see a difference between thoose germans you 2 talk about and your own mindset.
Germans not only have dubbed TV, they even have german Rap / HipHop / … funny, right?

Btw. It’s not so much a ‘not wanting to talk english’ but some kind of hesitation.

How is it xenophobia to expect English on an American made game playing on a server hosted in America?

Advertised as American only and only sold to american citizen. Runs only on american made hardware with american made energy …

Yeah man, how about all of us in the DESIGNATED ENGLISH SERVERS, speaking ENGLISH and then having them others coming into our servers speaking gibberish to us, gibberish we don’t understand. And omg YES you are totally right, it is extremely irritating, that’s why we’re posting about it here. Imagine us speaking perfectly fine english and having suddenly to content with all these people speaking garbage german and french and spanish. It is indeed extremely disrespectful of them to not learn english to talk to us, in our own servers. Extremely.

I think there is the main problem. Many people (including me) don’t think of those servers as strictly english, but more as International. Something like fee for all.

To see it from another point of view. According to your Wikipedia link there are 51% of the europeans, that speak english to some degree, a whole lot of them will be those ‘ignorant french, spanish and germans’ that have there own servers. What will you do with the rest? Or the non europeans? Force them to learn english or quit playing?

Btw. most people i met started writing english as soon as they entered a party for dungeons / pvp / any other kind of small scale content … but getting forced to use english in /m or /s is beyond silly. After all it’s a fantasy game, just role-play and pretend they’re foreigners / tourists and can’t speak common (which would probably not be far from the truth).

You don’t see the irony of ‘splitting’ megaservers? It seems you don’t understand how they work or what the point of having them is.

Its more like i personally believe it was a mistake to sum up all servers into 1 instead of combining them by language. We still have more than enough player base to split into 3-4 megaservers(if u look at overcrowded world events where u just stand there pressing 1 until boss dies coz there are too many people). Not to mention we already have that in LFG… since u see a flag of what country people party is composed…

that would probably only be “a solution” for the spanish, french and german servers, but not the international servers.

btw. the servers already work that way. they normally pool the 4 supported client languages into there own maps … people who taxi to specific maps bypass that system on purpose.

To the guy screaming about mantle. Sorry to disappoint but as it is now it is a proprietary API locked to AMD. Their plans were to open it to other vendors but obviously nVidia weren’t interested in supporting it, HOWEVER, the next OpenGL standard, namely Vulkan, is basically Mantle.

Here’s the blogpost about it: http://community.amd.com/community/amd-blogs/amd-gaming/blog/2015/03/03/one-of-mantles-futures-vulkan

I like AMD too but they have never had a working Mantle demo on an nVidia or Intel GPU.

Good news is, Vulkan is meant to work on any major OS (including WXP) and most modern GPUs.

AMD advised to not focus on Mantle but on DirectX 12 and Vulkan. Mantle was a really good idea of AMD but became obsolete with DX12 and Vulkan.

Well, basically Mantle will become Vulkan … and nVidia and Intel are onboard aswell as Apple (hint at the Mac Beta, which would be obsolete with DX12)

Windows 7 and 8 will get free upgrades to windows 10. so at the release of windows 10 there is no actual reason NOT to upgrade. Other platforms will get this upgrade as well… Only they require a full reinstall.

Other OS’s apart from Win 7 / 8 won’t get any form of a free Win 10 Version. Most of those User don’t even want anything Windows on there machines, not even a second gaming partition …

P.S: @lordkrall, I don’t think WoW has ever been designed for Dx 11 when it was made 10 years ago. Yet, they already upped the render tech. And are upgrading character models now (or did already, i dont follow it so closely) because the new tech allows for more draw calls per frame without killing your FPS.

WoW was build with DX9 and oGL2.x (i think) in mind and released on Win and OS X simultaneously. There was no need to rewrite the whole engine to support different rendering apis.

My card is direct X 12 ready.

You guys are aware that most of the games that have DirectX 10-11 support also support DirextX 9, right? And that people on Windows 7 and 8 will be able to upgrade towWindows 10 (which have DirectX 12) for free during the first year after Win 10 release?

Not everyone will be able or even want to update to Windows 10 though. Also keep in mind that Windows XP is still listed as minimum requirement for Guild Wars 2. And Windows XP can’t get the free update, nor can Windows Vista.

cmon
windows xp got abandoned even by m$ a YEAR ago
its old, outdated, not supported anymore system. move on. win7/8 can run on quite any machine.

says the Windows guy to the Mac crowd …

and could you please stop demanding a render engine, that would kill the Mac-port?

…Day to day use is pretty straightforward, yes. Installation can also be pretty easy. Finding, downloading, and installing this party drivers for hardware components is what would, in my opinion, throw novice to average users off. With windows and mac, in the majority of cases, this is handled automatically. That is what most users want…

What drivers are problematic? I mean even AMD and Nvidia have useable drivers nowadays. The only problem i can see are mouse and keyboard drivers … which shouldn’t be that hard at all.

The learning curve for Linux operating systems is more than most people want to deal with. I hate to use a cliche, but most people want a system that “just works”

I’ve got nothing against Linux, I simply disagreed with the statement that most people are desperate to switch to Linux.

I agree that most people are *’%&$%&( idiots when it comes to computers and just a minority is desperate to change to UNIX. But after all, people are lazy … they stick to the system that’s preinstalled.
Guess what? Most people give a kitten, if the system they use is UNIX, Windows or whatnot if it ‘just works’ and that is every System in the market right now, if it’s preinstalled …

Windows isn’t the most used desktop OS just because of video games but also because of how it works.

It’s not because of how it works, it’s because it’s pre-installed on new computers. If tomorrow every vendor would start selling PCs with Linux, do you think everyone would grab a Windows box from a store shelf and install it? Most would just stay with Linux.
Look at the smartphone market. 90% of smartphones in the world run on Android (Linux), because it’s pre-installed.

Many people would pic up a copy of Windows. Most users want easy to use, intuitive operating systems. Android is popular not just because it’s preinstalled, but because it’s easy to use even for somebody without much knowledge or experience. Windows and Mac OS are, similarly, geared towards novice users who want to plug in, turn on, and do what they want to do. Most people don’t want to mess around with terminal, or memorize a system of commands. They want point-and-click, plug-and-play systems that do what they want, when they want, with minimal input or effort.

Many people have literally zero experience with any UNIX system, but like to talk kitten about it …
The installation and day to day use of say Ubuntu is as complicated as with Windows or Mac OS X.

why? they could give people the option to run the game in 64 bit and dx 12.
and people who cant use 64 bit and dx12 would still be able to run the game like right now.

Than they would have to maintain at least 2 different clients, which will cost more money …

Don’t get me wrong, i still hope for a 64 bit Client, but oGL and not dX12 which would also eliminate most of the problems.

and i really wish anet thinks about dx 12 and 64 bit. it would be a major increase in performance even for people with older hardware.
nvidia for example will update drivers for gpus back to gtx 500 or something. ofc the old cards wont support dx 12 on hardware level, but via software emulation. and thats still an improvement.

If they’ll do that, the’ll lose the Mac Player Base …

im not sure if wow was built with dx11 in mind
and they did it
whats stopping anet? not enough money, so they put skins that were ingame skins in the orignal, now for 300 gems?

WoW was released in 2003 with support for dX9 and OpenGL.
There was no need to rewrite the code to support different engines cause it already did.
Please stop complaining about the lack of dX10+ when there is no alternative to an emulation of dX9 for the Mac / Unix crowd.

Protip: Complain about an openGL Port for the engine. After that the code is rewritten enough to support a port to dX12

while having multiple renderers for the same game is possible (see WoW, Civ 5) it requires the game be built with that in mind from the get go.

if you haven’t built your game from the ground up with this in mind (usually to have a DX and OGL renderer) then it is ALOT of work convert it.

I still wish for an openGL Version for us Mac / Unix users.
