Crafting =/= Profit

Very good point Dualnay, forgot to mention the part about checking for components. That is an absolute part of the process because of the dump so many people do just to get rid of stuff. I also like to find the fine/raw materials I need and watch the market continuously for those parts and snatch anything that goes in for a low price. It happens all day everyday and you just need to be speedy and know where your break point is at for what you’re willing to pay for the base materials. Research, research research….

Crafting =/= Profit

An example and some pointers from a crafter who makes money…

First and foremost and by far the most important thing for making money in crafting:
The Masterwork/Fine market is worthless.
Stick to crafting rare items of your chosen professions to find a decent profit.

To make a significant amount of money the next thing to do is find items that are increasing in, not already high in, demand. This doesn’t mean you can’t craft items that are already in high demand, it just means if you do, your profit margin will be considerably lower. For instance, I noticed the demand for honed weapons increasing a few weeks ago but the underlying materials to make them were not spiking yet. Hence, I sunk a significant amount of money into the fine crafting materials for all levels of honed rares (35, 50, 65, 80). Then I spent 1 1/2 days actively farming the wood/ore I needed to make the items and bought all the karma recipes up to L80 to begin crafting said rares. So as to maximize my profit I listed my items a few at a time for the prices they were moving at or slightly below. Over the course of a couple weeks I watched my profits skyrocket as the rare prices increased without having to buy the underlying fine materials which also started jumping in price. If you use this method, don’t just craft a bunch of items and then list them all immediately. Hold on to them and spread it out over time to maximize your profit. Worst case scenario is you guess wrong and probably still end up breaking even.

What also helps is watching the profession forums to see what builds people are currently talking about. If you have a character you can try out the builds yourself and get direct experience to know if it’s viable. If it is, look at the items that would make the build work even better or items that are required to make the build work in the first place.

One last thing I’d like to mention. Keep track of your expenses. The biggest mistake I see a lot of crafters make is not keeping track of these details and all of a sudden they find themselves selling items for lower than the cost spent in making them. This includes keeping track of the prices of items you farm to craft those items. The idea being, why use an item to craft something when you can sell it on the market and make more? Personally I actually use a spreadsheet to keep track of my expenditures and the prices of the materials at the time I craft the item to know exactly what my profit margin is going to be. Don’t forget to include your 15% taxes when selling either.

Making money in crafting is work. It is not something as easy as “Choose X item and craft that to make money”. It takes effort, research and attention to details to find the markets. They are always shifting and never stable so you too can find markets over and over again in which to make money.

And no Kaderin – from what I’ve seen the skins are not unique in anyway. For instance, the heavy exotic set is the Draconic skin.

People crashing the game to avoid dying

Agreed. There are quite a few programs that block Alt+F4 so there’s no issue doing so. Especially when you can use Ctrl+Alt+Del and use Task Manager to kill your crashed program which you frequently can’t get out of even with Alt+F4. The simple issue is what’s been mentioned, you logout but your character remains in world for a short time. It’s how EVE fixed the problem of instant warping to avoid destruction so there’s no reason A-Net can’t do the same thing. When it comes right down to it, this is exploiting the game mechanics to avoid penalties pure and simple. Really poor form.

Changes to the crafting window

Old way was absolutely better. I read through the other post linked in this thread and guess what? I still can’t type in numbers. No matter what I do, my UI always resets to 1 forcing me to use the very inaccurate slider and occasionally just giving up and crafting the max of an item because of frustration trying to get it set. Really don’t see why it was changed in the first place as there was nothing confusing nor aesthetically displeasing about the old UI.

Please A-Net, re-instate the old crafting mechanism.

Malfunctioning Attack Skill

I have been having a consistent problem with the #1 Attack skill not auto repeating on my Mesmer. At first I thought it was a combination of weapons but that does not appear to be the case. My bottom attack slot does not auto repeat the #1 attack skill anymore. It used too but stopped doing so about 2 days ago and has not worked since. There are quirks…

The top slot combo of weapons will always auto repeat the #1 skill properly. It never fails no matter what. If I begin combat with this combo active it will auto attack and I can swap to the second combo of weapons and it will auto attack properly as well. However, if I begin combat with the bottom slot active, it will not auto repeat. Even if I switch to the top combo and back, it will still not auto repeat that #1 attack skill.

Needless to say, this is annoying as I cannot necessarily always be on the top slot every time I engage. This is especially true when handling more than 1 mob at a time. The only other option I have is to simply never use the bottom combination of weapons which is even more annoying than constantly having to hit 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 over and over again to make sure my attack continues.

Update: More testing – this is not happening on any other character I have…tested on Ranger, Guardian, Warrior, Thief. However, on the Mesmer it continues to happen as describe with a new caveat. The Auto Attack feature is causing the issue. Only on the bottom combo of weapons, the auto attack feature is occasionally randomly turning off. I swapped weapons back and forth inside and outside of combat an without warning on occasion the auto attack on the #1 attack skill randomly turned off in between swaps. No, I am not accidentally hitting Ctrl+Mouse 2 as it happened just hitting ~ to swap weapons. without any other keys being pressed. If I get more info I will update again.

Economy? What Economy?

So let’s look at a snapshot of some low end crafting items in the AH and see if we can spot the bots and how they affect the economy. These were the top 5 sellers in each category I sampled:

Units Available

Copper Ore
137,182
305,016
101,764
127,708
153,953

Bone Chip
4422
3469
1292
2501
5373

Vial of Weak Blood
3758
18915
18863
2670
2304

Now – who here has farmed even half this amount? As mentioned before I have nearly 600 hours played so far and my seven characters are being leveled together one at a time. I think on Copper Ore I may have sold 2000 units, maybe even 3000 but 100,000??!! Same goes with Bone Chips and Vials of Weak Blood. Since these are used to make Vital and Strong items respectively they are some of the most demanded.

Raise your hand if you’ve farmed 1000 bone chips or Vials of Weak Blood…

Edit: I would just like to note that as more people level up this same thing is happening to higher end crafting items. Bots are moving from zone to zone increasing in level as demand increases. The numbers on the high end crafting items are beginning to reflect that as well. By way of example…

Ancient Bone
6213
1283
5046
271
1559

Economy? What Economy?

Everyone should keep in mind that the value of gold is mostly defined by its scarcity.

Beg to differ John but the value of gold with the current state of the game is being mostly defined by botters. I have nearly 600 hours played so far and yet I don’t even come close to affording any of the “elite” items being sold by botters at the moment. With their ability to farm unlimited amounts with nearly no penalty for doing so, botters are determining the value of gold. Since they control the economy via the TP they can raise or lower prices at will.

Consider this – with the last patch and “sweep” of bots most items in the TP increased in value…but only for 2-3 days and have now begun to drop again. This is happening as the botter population increases. Without more control over them A-Net can explain all they want about the economy but the reality is bots control it – not the players and certainly not A-Net.

Sorry.

Guild: Yak Smackers
Tag: YAKS
World: Yak’s Bend
Guild Leader: Rasta

Following the latest patch on 9/25 we have lost every non-permanent upgrade that was built.
Upgrades that disappeared:

5% Influence for 24 hrs
10% Influence from events
10% PvP Influence for 24 hours
WvW Fort +5 Supply

Additionally, the upgrade that was queued to build yesterday – 10% Magic Find for 3 days – has now disappeared. No influence was refunded for the incomplete upgrade nor was any given for the upgrades that were already completed. This is a total of 1100 influence now lost. This is an extremely expensive issue for a guild of only 20 people and we would like some sort of resolution.
