WoodenPotatoes said that he asked a dev about the sign and the dev said that it doesn’t apply to players because they are heroes or something.
Lol, that’s awesome! I bet it is completely by coincidence though, you know Anet is like, “Wut?….Yeah….YEAH, we had that easter egg in there from the beginning!”
I find this mount aversion perplexing. A mount, at least in this case, is like a tool. If I didn’t like keys, I wouldn’t avoid locked doors. I’d pick up the key, open the lock put the key away and not think about it.
This just feels like taking a stand to just to take a stand to me.
I don’t like mounts because immersion. How is a mount less immersive than walking everywhere? There are animals in the game. Races domesticate animals (including devourers used by charr in the game), seems to me that nothing could be more natural than riding a mount…for immersion.
In truth walking everywhere doesn’t make as much sense as riding a mount.
I think a lot of it has to do with mount trolling in other games. Standing on top of NPCs, blocking views, clutter everywhere, etc.
I myself, was rather anti-mountish, but that’s because I was a a Guild Wars 1 traditionalist.
Now, after seeing them in the announcement video, I’m reservedly excited. I’m just hoping they’re disabled in cities.
I think this is something everyone in the thread can agree with. We should have “no mounts zone” areas mainly around heavily populated zones (like entering the trading post or crafting area) or stopping NPC interaction while mounted. I doubt many people would be oppose to that.
I can definitely get behind no mounts zones, especially as they aren’t really needed in cities anyway.
I work in marketing, not in the video game industry, but I keep tabs on all sorts of ships in the marketplace. Digital distribution has been, and will continue to be, the primary distribution method for PC games going forward. Heck, even pen and paper RPGs are being affected by this, with more and more sales occurring online for PDFs than in-store for paper copies. I have even been caught up in this trend as well, divesting myself of a lot of the, being honest, junk that I have laying around the house. This makes my wife happy and creates less dust collectors.
I completely understand where you are coming from, abronan.7184, your experience was one of the main reasons I stopped playing WoW, and I hope this toxicity doesn’t leak over into Tyria. I’ll echo what others have said and try and find a great guild community to play with.
Yeah, wouldn’t want those mounts to break your immersion /s
Ugh, I know right? Let’s talk about THIS first.
However tyria and ESPECIALLY TOWNS, Mounts are (for some ppl) massively immersion breaking.
How is it breaking your immersion?
I don’t get how it is either. To me it is far more immersion breaking to imagine that Tyrian civilisation has existed for thousands of years and nobody thought of using animals for transport. Nah, the Charr have made tanks and there are airships and helecopters, the Asura came up with a frikken teleportation system but other than that, let’s just walk everywhere.
My immersion is also broken by how the second-most simplest weapon mankind has to offer, after the wooden club, the spear somehow doesn’t exist, but we made the mental leap to harpoons somehow…
Snip
Thanks for explaining your point of view! I have no real opinion either way, but then I’m curious how you feel about cows, chickens, and the tons of other fantastic, but otherwise beastly beasts? I just don’t get the beef (hehe) at the mounts thing, but I would agree that I would rather they not be allowed in towns. In regards to your stance on people AFKing on mounts, you must have not ridden a horse much have you? People will sit around on their horses all the time. That would totally hurt my behind, but people do it.
Because they’re myopic. I’d be willing to bet quite a lot of money that lack of mounts was a huge driver behind why this game hasn’t performed better. People in general find mounts to add immersion as well as being a very desirable collectible. So, anyone with a brain pretty much knew they’d be coming at some point.
There are loads of reasons that GW2 has not performed better than it has:
1. Level/Zone Scaling: I had a large guild in WoW that was chomping at the bit to dive head first into Tyria and never leave, but the level scaling, they felt, robbed them of a greater sense of gaining more power and progressing in combat ability.
2. Background: There are tons of lore geeks that I remember complaining about how nonsensical and just “off” much of the game’s background feels. Certainly a personal preference, but there it is.
3. No Subscription: For as many people that were attracted by the “Buy and Play” aspect of GW2, there were/are just as many who would never touch it because players don’t have consistent skin in the game beyond their time.
4. Cash Shop: Yes, other games, even WoW has this feature, but WoW is purely cosmetic, with no real in-game advantages to be gained unless you want to boost a character.
5. Flavorful, Yet Boring Combat: Don’t get me wrong, GW2 combat LOOKS awesome, but even I really get tired by how monotonous is begins to feel. Yes, I know it’s an MMORPG what do you expect, but I have never felt this combat fatigue in any other game.
6. No Triad Group System: The whole, no tanks, healers, or dps roles isn’t everyone’s cup of tea either.
So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that there are a LOT better reasons that we can turn to when we ask, “Why isn’t GW2 more successful?” than “Because people don’t want to play an MMORPG without mounts!”
I’m actually really excited about the Firebrand. A more active group support role sounds right up my alley!
However tyria and ESPECIALLY TOWNS, Mounts are (for some ppl) massively immersion breaking.
How is it breaking your immersion?
Gw2 never had mounts and it just ruins the immersion.
What immersion exactly? The world has always had beasts of burden in it, so why does going to an area where the preferred mode of travelling is by these new mounts break your immersion? I’m not being a jerk, I’m genuinely curious.
The other thing I hate, which again is personal preference, is how cluttered & horrid my screen will look in cities (if they are useable there), and at groups waiting for an event/wb. With all the stupid tonics that turn people into giant flying elementals, animals etc, and the insane amount of glowing wings & particles everywhere the place already looks like a circus crashed into a nightclub.
Kind of off-topic, but THIS is really the only thing that bothers me about GW@ (either I’m easy to please or easily annoyed!) I’ll order the expansion if Arena adds an option for me to disable stupid backpack junk. Geeze! /rant
The above does annoy me, but I think I am liking what I am hearing from this expansion.

I was hoping for some WvW news. . .oh well.
I don’t think we’ll see a new profession, but we might get a new race, but I’m fine with the race choices as they stand.
I would like to see them take a page from the GW1 game version and allow duel classes. Mesmer/Ranger, Guardian/Necro etc….
Ugh, I hope not. I never liked the idea of dual classes as I, personally, prefer to have a clear understanding of my character’s identity and role along with everyone elses’. Just my two coppers.
If you want a game that is pretty darn good, and that you can step away from at any time if you need to, then GW2 is the game for you!
One of the selling points for me for this series, has always been the lack of a subscription fee. Even one as innocent as each month you get free Waypoint costs and a small amount of gems would not go over well with me as it would create the psychological need to play the game. One of the great things about this game is how easy it is to breaks. The playerbase even encourages it for when players become burned out or bored but to come back when the next Patch, LS, etc. etc. comes out. A subscription fee would be counter to that healthy culture.
All my +1’s. I love the lack of a subscription fee for GW2, and it is what has made me come back and, soon enough, buy HoT.
If ArenaNet wanted to make some more cash generating channels then I would have them consider high quality video content via YouTube and a housing system with place-able items. EQ2 makes quite a chunk of change selling exclusive house items in their cash shop.
I’ll add my voice to those wanting to see mugs, glassware, coasters, and a GW2 map.
I’d also like to see more novels.
Custom statues of your character would be pretty cool as well.
Bump from the ninja Norn.
This guild is great! If you want a guild that truly acts like a community then this is the place to be!
