The Biggest Concern about HoT

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Ravious.4269

Ravious.4269

WoW has added that with every single expansion. 8-10 dungeons, with an equal number of hard modes, the hard modes having significantly different mechanics. They also usually add more than 3 raids. See:

http://www.wowwiki.com/World_of_Warcraft:_Cataclysm
http://www.wowwiki.com/World_of_Warcraft:_The_Burning_Crusade
http://www.wowwiki.com/World_of_Warcraft:_Wrath_of_the_Lich_King

Yes, but not in one go they spread it out over several releases within an expansion, spanning two or so years. If people are expecting to find that much the second the expansion comes out then they are probably going to be disappointed. Maybe in time they’ll add that much but we’ll see. I just made a point of that in case some people actually expected that much content on release.

I think this is very important. If ArenaNet doesn’t have some sort of Living World post-xpac launch updates, I would be surprised. My feeling is that the xpac is going to be part content drop, part “season pass”.

Still comparing an entire WoW xpac season to the HoT content drop isn’t an accurate comparison.

We Don't Need No Stinking Doors

in Living World

Posted by: Ravious.4269

Ravious.4269

Is this a bug or just… something. I don’t understand why the broken doors don’t refresh either after a mordrem attack or when we rebuild the walls. It seems silly to rebuild the walls and not the doors, especially since the doors are protected by firey oil buckets of death, and the walls are not.

I think on one hand it’s cool that you get a “cracked egg” effect where if the mordrem break the doors then you have a weaker objective to defend. However, I’d rather repair the doors than the walls if we’re repairing anything. Then at least the burning oil keeps some mechanical benefit throughout the event.

2g for bandit protection in silver wastes?

in Living World

Posted by: Ravious.4269

Ravious.4269

It’s pretty easy to get to the trap switch. I went counterclockwise. Roll in, hit a trap, stand there and wait to heal. Then roll again towards the trap switch. Kill a bandit if necessary, but DON’T MOVE or DODGE. As a necro this was pretty easy because every time I rolled in to a trap I just transferred the condis to the nearest red bandit.

Three of us killed the champ. She wasn’t that hard between blinds and blocks. We got a tarnished key, which had a decent amount of loot. Nothing mindblowing, but it was fun.

Also, something weird happened as we were making our way to the trap switch. A player, believably a player, became red, and we killed the player… even with a finisher. I am not sure how the player became red? Perhaps they paid the 2g…. man that would suck to pay 2g and then get murdered by the “good” players not paying the bandits.

Proposal Overview
Have a means to supply towers/keeps with supply beyond dolyaks such as having a supply depot give supply directly to a tower/keep ala EOTM.

Goal of Proposal
The goal is to give defenders more options to build a fresh defense, allow for towers/keeps to become better supply points, and reduce the amount of “paper” objectives.

Proposal Functionality
It would work nearly identicaly to EOTM. Dolyaks should still be balanced to be useful.

Associated Risks
The main risk is reducing the meta built around dolyaks. There is also the risk of “winning more” but hopefully this will be balanced since a havoc group could conceivably take a tower and turn it into a real pain to retake if they have supply flow.

The main problem is they are not friends with the current PvE meta. They are supposed to be balanced in PvE groupings by seriously crippling the opposition, but compared to might stacking, cleave, and the guardian/warrior/mesmer combo the tradeoff is just silly.

That and in PvE one of their dominant slices of pie (conditions) is technically flawed.

Mordremoth, the 5th wheel?

in Living World

Posted by: Ravious.4269

Ravious.4269

Sure, I think ED’s are a driving force of nature. Certain Lt.‘s seem to keep some of their intelligence, but they deeply feel the need to do things in service of that will of the ED. I don’t disagree that through the combination, as evidenced by some of the Personal Story speech, the Lt’s can’t be quite ingenius.

But Scarlet says, “Ever since I came out of Omadd’s machine, you’ve been taking credit for my ideas. They are mine! Not yours.”

I don’t think an ED would “claim” credit for an idea. I don’t think ED’s have ego. They just are.

Mordremoth, the 5th wheel?

in Living World

Posted by: Ravious.4269

Ravious.4269

I don’t like this theory, which is admittedly gaining strength, because the ED’s have never been “one to talk”. In the novels they were forces of nature…. it’s hard to see how Scarlet would have an ED voice in her head. I can see Mordremoth corrupting her and Scarlet acting towards the ED’s end, but this always seemed more like what a god would do.

The other thing is that she opened this window by checking out the Eternal Alchemy. I just find it hard to believe that a “force of nature” was waiting for this window to be opened. Assuming in the first place that ED’s exist beyond the threshold of Tyria (i.e., in the Eternal Alchemy more like a god), I just find it weird that it would be able to pinpoint a person.

If it is Mordremoth it will be really interesting to see how ANet gets around that force of nature ideal.

Lore of EotM

in Lore

Posted by: Ravious.4269

Ravious.4269

I’ve been having a few thoughts in EotM that I wanted to put here first before putting elsewhere. Most of my perspective is from Overgrowth.

(1) The Mists are mostly unformed potential, as far as I understand. What is the EotM creation story? I think this is the biggest puzzle, and hopefully it has an answer other than “make a cool WvW map”.

(2) Overgrowth has lots of ruined human architecture. Reminds me of the Aquatic Ruins fractals more than any known human kingdom. But the grawl have it.

(3) The three race choices are also interesting: kodan, grawl, and ogre. None of these are of the five ancient races (mursaat, jotun, seer, forgotten, dwarves) or the five currently dominant races (PC choices).

(3 tangent) as an aside these three races herald from the northeastern and eastern portions of Tyria.

(4) What is up with the airships? Are they purely Aetherblade airships, or Mist-ized fragments of them.

My quack-job hypothesis: The Aetherblades fled and somehow stabilized or helped form the EotM. I’m not sure what relation ogres, grawl, and kodan have, but these races are not located near the only other Aetherblade place we know of: Twilight Arbor (which canonically may have been destroyed?).

Hopefully this starts a good discussion and other perspectives (Frostreach, Badlands) from possible lore tidbits from EotM.

A proper narrator would identify the subject (Scarlet) being the distant narrator, and a proper narrator wouldn’t identify you. That’s why I think this is an in-game narrator “talking” to “you”.

Living Story recap livestream

in Lore

Ravious.4269

I hear you, and I understand completely how much fun that little “conjecture game” is. It goes with the territory for imaginative people.

We attempt to get all the information you need out there in one format or another before the end of the arc. Sometimes, you just have to wait for the story to finish unfolding. But sometimes, we just won’t have time to detail it in-game as deeply as you wish we could. In those instances, we can maybe fill in the blanks with blog posts or interviews, etc.

I love the Conjecture Game. It is one of my favorite mental exercises for any medium, especially ttrpg.

However, there is a big problem with the Guild Wars 2 universe that makes the Conjecture Game sometimes unfun: The possible universe is too big.

I like the Palladium RIFTS feel of possibilities in Guild Wars 2, but once we get to a point of conjecture sometimes it just gets to the “too many possibilities”-phase [see Bahltek ]. We don’t even know all of Tyria (world)!

I do appreciate that you guys are pushing the boundaries, as seen especially with this “Season 1” of stories because it seems to be dealing with grander things… Fractals, “What did Scarlet see?” than the mere Elder Dragons problem. As that Season 1 is becoming clearer, I see more and more the care you put into crafting it, and the theme.

I really appreciate this dialogue, and I am not trying to blame anybody. I just feel Konig, and all the other lore delvers (including myself) because it always feels like we don’t know more than we know.

THAT BEING SAID, the Guild Wars 2 universe is way more interesting than a similar universe that has been mostly spoiled… such as World of Warcraft. Rift is a little better because there is some polarity of facts as to who was right between factions, but even there… most is known. I guess the worst part though is with Guild Wars is that directions never seemed to go to completion/satiation.

So it is a frustrating line on both sides, but at least we get to all let our imaginations fly!

[PvE] The Problem with Conditions - A "Fix"

The other problem, I feel, is condi-spec fights for DPS with non-condi. It’d be like if a dire thief stole DPS from a ‘zerk warrior. The enemy gets loaded with a lot of crappy bleeds and the people actually spec’d to give strong bleeds lose out while they wait for the crappy bleeds to go away.

Ok, so 25 bleed cap is here to stay, but why can’t we push out weak bleeds. Possibly give them % of their remaining damage when they are pushed out. Call it Exit Wounds.

[PvE][Necromancer] General Viability

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Ravious.4269

Ravious.4269

I find we are very viable in everything except dungeons, and possibly solo roaming in WvW.

The reason we are not viable is because we are selfish in dungeons. Sure we can do amazing DPS, but we don’t synergize to do it. Other classes do amazing DPS and they make other classes better. This is supposed to be offset by the fact that we are weakening the enemy, but in dungeons all the eliteness of the enemies lowers our traits. I’m talking fear immunity, blind reduction, weakness reduction, etc.

Another thing is this whole “attrition” thing that completely falls apart in dungeons. We cannot out attrition anything because we don’t have all the tools other classes have to completely avoid damage.

It just seems like for dungeons necromancers are… okay. They don’t seem to bring much synergy to be desired. Perhaps it’s just the meta is so heavy-armor centric with mesmers that other classes are all accidentally undervalued.

CDI- Character Progression- Vertical

in CDI

Posted by: Ravious.4269

Ravious.4269

I feel like new stat combos, skins, skills, traits, crafting recipes, mini pets, achievements, ect… are all horizontal progression and we have spent a lot more time and resources on expanding those systems by far.

From my player perspective the ton of dev time taken to balance skills and traits does not equate to horizontal progression.

Also in my opinion
New stat combos – with the current lack of saving builds I feel this is a small amount of progression. It is more of a cost decision than a progression. Do I want to use the bank space to store yet another set of armor/trinkets/weapons? Is this new stat combo going to be generally better than what I normally use? I don’t feel with all the costs that I am necessarily progressing.

Skins – the cost is even higher. I know you are a business, but I have to decide the cost of replacing my current skin or weapon. With exotics at least the cost was not as bad. I buy a 50g skin on the TP, 10% more to buy a new exotic is not that bad. Then add sigil cost. Then add build efficiency cost because now I don’t get my exotic sigil. Again, I don’t feel like I am progressing. I feel like I am making a decision on which I want.

Collections – always good for horizontal progression. I think this area can be expanded upon a lot with say a mob drop collection, or a daily flavor collection (do a daily a certain way, advance a collection).

Achievements – I think you guys have this one pretty well under control. This, I feel, is a pretty darn good horizontal progression.

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: Ravious.4269

The Queen Jennah’s Jubilee meta-achievement requires 16 achievements. However, there are only 13 achievements in that category.

In order to complete the meta-achievement players have to complete at least 3 daily Living World achievements which are found in the Daily achievement category. This is pretty confusing… however easy it is for the confusion to be dispelled.

I would suggest: that in the future this mechanic is used (which I like a lot actually), please add a 0 AP repeatable achievement in the main Living World category that tasks players with completing Daily Living World achievements so at the very least someone using the main Living World category as a guide will be led to right spot.

Hate to break it to you, but your main concern is a fallacy. This is known as a “Slippery Slope” argument and it is illogical.
No it isn’t.

You are arguing that Kenya will invade Poland because they are having a recession.
Your entire argument is fixed on the justification that Germany invaded Poland because they had a recession and now everyone who has a recession will be invading Poland.

That is an example of your argument, with only the terms being changed.

You are arguing that ArenaNet will go P2W because they are adding a new gem store exclusive. Your entire argument is fixed on the justification that “insert other MMO company” went P2W after adding new “gem store” items and thus every MMO company will go P2W after adding new “gem store” items.

Your entire premise is a fallacy and is illogical.

er. slippery slopes are a fallacy at times, sure, but that doesnt mean all slippery slopes are a fallacy. Anyone who’s observed games like DDO or LoTRO can tell you their f2p model has gotten progressively more abusive and money grabbing as players have taken any slight overreach theyve tried and continued buying anyhow.

Sometimes they will miss whole bits of content! And content > achievements. That is part of the Living World experience. Experience it now because a lot of it will not last. That bit is not going to change because it is core to the live experience that ArenaNet wants to bring.

Honestly though this appears very sour grapes. If the achievement was so darn important, why didn’t you spend the 5 minutes to get it? What was more important to Chuo then? Are achievements more important to Chuo now, or just because you can’t get them?
